  • @paranoid788 If you can do these without weight, or with just a little weight, your calves shouldn't get too big for your liking. However, if you add dumbells, the heavier the weight you lift = bigger muscle mass.

  • @Lucifit See i'm trying to get my calves smaller, i definitely don't want them to get any bigger! lol so as long as i don't do the exercise with weights, my calves will get smaller? :)

  • @paranoid788 Well, essentially, nothing is guaranteed to make you smaller. Remember the saying: "There's no such thing as spot reduction?" Well, it's true!  So, in order to get smaller calves, you'll probably need to get smaller all over. We do this successfully with diet and a complete exercise program (cardio, strength, stretching).

  • @danicalyra don't focus on only one part of your body hon. Look at the total picture!

  • Calves, shoulders (deltoids) and abs are, in my opinion, the three hardest muscles to train for both men and women.

    One-legged calf raises while holding on to a dumbbell or kettlebell weight will set your calves on fire.

    Also, try plyometrics (explosive movement exercises), tip toe jumping etc. Playing basketball helps.

    Sprinting up a hill or up flights of steps to the top of a building also will give your calves a killer workout.

  • @flor92695 We can't just slim one part of the body it needs to be the whole thing. So, focus on walking 3-5 days per week (or swimming, or biking, or something like that) which gets your heart rate up and feels a bit challenging. That will burn off any extra fat weight. Then, do a TOTAL BODY workout with weights, to keep your metabolism going and to tone up. If you do all of the exercises on my page you'll get the total body workout I'm speaking of. I hope that helps....

  • @flor92695 calves are on of the things that are largely defined by your genetics. Some people are just born with large calves, while other are born with the inability to make them grow much. Your best bet is to tone the rest of your body to make your large calves less apparent. Unless you have high body fat, use skin calipers to measure your body fat, find your level and aim for a goal to gradually reduce your body fat.

  • @flor92695 Keep in mind that fat loss and muscle gain is a slow process that can take up to 6 months to do and still stay health.

  • even though both my parents have nice calves, I don't. I've been trying to work them and there is some muscle but I also have big knees, so my calves need to almost double in size for me to have nice calves. I'm a slim, tall girl...any ideas of how to sort the problem out ?

  • @stupidintellect90 I would say, you probably have better legs than you think. If you're slim and tall, you can only make your calves as big as your genetics allow them to get. Do these heel raises though, and use some weight in your hands to increase your muscle mass. Then stretch your calves so you aren't too sore afterwards. Let me know how it goes.

  • @Lucifit Thank you and I shall let you know how it goes...is it true that if a person has long calf muscles its harder for them to get them bigger than say a shorter person...I mean I've also noticed it,shorter people are most likely to have huge bulging calves. thanks for uploading :)

  • @stupidintellect90 It's true that your muscle size will largely depend on the length of your muscle and the muscle tendon, too! We can boil it down to... genetics. But, you can do the best with what you have and still come out really well!

  • i wish there were videos to help skinny girls who cant gain weight and there only option is to build muscle without looking like a man........ there are skinny people out there too that hate beinge skinny lol well if anyone knows how to gain muscle without looking like a body builder can you let me know.   • How do I loosen my calf muscles ? Genetically, I have fairly sizeable calves, I don't want to enlargen them, just loosen them. I do alot of walking and my feet get tight too-I'm diagnosing my feet are tight because my calves are tight...and so on and so on....really tight everything really...glutes,hamstrings,add­uctors etc etc...

  • @nobbilc You need a good total body stretching routine! To stretch the calves though, put your feet on a stair just like I am doing and instead of lifting and lowering your heels, just hang them down. That should be a good stretch for you!

    My thighs & calves now are big . I am 70 kg now, played basketball before and stopped for years. Since I stopped my bball, the leg got bigger, end up like now .

    I want to slim my leg down, for both the thighs and calves , But I don't want end up the calves showing muscles round round and big big like my mommy. It looks manly somehow . . . Cuz I still want to wear skirt, u see...

    Let me know if this can help me ? and any extra exercise for this leg-slimming ?

  • @ricwhk It depends on where they are. I wouldn't do anything that aggravates them. And definitely see a doc regarding what types of movement you can do and whether or not you need them removed.

  • I have tree trunk calves lol... there is muscle there, but I wish it was more toned and leaner... will these exercises make them worse (bigger) or tone them? I don't want to increase their size. If you have any suggestions for something that would be appropriate for that, I would appreciate it :-) thanks - Kris

  • @adm4peace Yes. If you do these exercises holding onto weights... use something to balance yourself like a railing or a wall. Weights will help to increase your calf size. The bigger the weight, the bigger your muscle will be. But, remember to start light and work up to heavier.

  • @Duddehur Hi there! Sorry if it's hard to find! Just go to my youtube channel (Lucifit), and you'll see all of the vids I have so far. Calf slimming... actually comes with overall body slimming. Excess weight comes off our body like an onion, one layer at a time. If you want to take it off your calves, you need to take it off everywhere.

  • @janetmorales221986 Yes. Running, walking, jogging. All of these will help your calves to get more in shape! Also, sketchers and MBT's have shoes that work your lower leg much more when you're standing or walking. Check them out on their site, or on my site at SHOP.

  • @Duddehur Hi there. If you want to keep your calves small, you'll need to avoid hill running/walking, jumping rope, stairmasters, and exercises like this using weights! Your idea of making the thighs bigger will make your calves look smaller... check out my thigh videos for the way to get the most out of some at-home thigh exercises. Let me know if u have any more Q's!

  • Yes, you can make your calves bigger. I do my exercises to strategically make my body the way I want it. To make calves bigger, I would hold a weight while doing these. If you're on a stair, touch or hold the bannister (but don't use your hand to help your legs) with one hand and hold weight with the other. The higher weight you use, the more muscle you'll build. It's also a good core exercise to pull your abs in and hold your body upright while on one leg. Have fun!

  • yes! Skipping (rope) burns lots of calories. Go for it!

  • Burning fat is best done with aerobic exercise, something you can do for 20 minutes or more. Walking, biking, swimming, running, moving more will help to get fat off your body. These exercises will help your calves look better by building more muscle underneath the skin. So use them as part of your routine!

  • hmm. I'm not sure why they would say that. It's a good idea to go to your own personal full range of motion. If your heels don't lower, then you shouldn't lower them! Otherwise, to get the most out of the exercise, go as far up and as far down as your physiology allows.

  • This exercise is to strengthen, shape and build muscle. If you want to get thinner - anywhere - you need to do cardiovacular activity. Anything that you can do for 20 minutes or more. Walking, jogging, dancing, jumping on a trampoline.. you name it!

  • Ode is right. This is to build muscle. I purposefully keep mine small, but if you want more muscle you need to hold weight in your hand while doing it. In that case, you'll need to make sure you have something to hold on to with the other hand for balance.

  • Well, for more muscle, you'll need to take weight in one hand. Just remember, the larger the weight, the bigger the muscle.

  • Ok, I've got a question. I've been doing calf raises for several months, but I've can't feel it in the bulk of my calf. I only get soar on the very top part of my calf where the leg bends at the knee, that's also the only place where I'm building muscle. I didn't have this problem for the first few months of calf raises, but now I can't build any more muscle or feel anything in the main part of the calf. Am I doing anything wrong?

  • Hmm.. Are you keeping your knees straight when you do the exercise? Your knees shouldn't be locked, but they should be straight, no movement there. See if that helps.

  • Well, it's not going to work as well. If you work your muscle hard enough the first time, you need to give it time to rest and recover. That's when the muscle building takes place. One day is the average amount of time needed for recovery.

  • OK, here it goes- 1.) Do as many as you can. Do it all together. Do it until you can't do another. If it takes more than 20 repetitions to fatigue then you'll need to increase the intensity (like I talk about on the vid). Not sets in the am and pm. Just once. All out!! 2.) Do it every other day, not every day. And 3.) Everyone takes a different amount of time so I can't really tell you how long. But it will take some time so have patience and be consistent. Finally- Thank you!!!

  • Oh, sweetie. I'd say running, walking, or swimming. Avoid hills, because that will increase muscle on your calves. Ultimately, do what you can, and then love your body anyway I'm sure it's beautiful :)

  • Try holding a weight in one hand while you do the exercise. You might want to hold on to a banister, or a wall when doing it though.

  • About weights, I'm a teen male and I play tennis, which need strong calves for quick running reactions. Would holding a 5kg weight strengthen my calves or just make them larger?

  • Yes, hold some weight. It will make them stronger and more powerful so you can get to the ball faster. It'll also strengthen your ankles, which is great for athletes.

  • the ultamate way to get nice calfs is to invite a load of friends over darken the lights turn the music up get a load of rave sticks (whichcan be reused by sticking them in the freezer) and jumping and dancing until the music stops also get healthy snacks just in case and lots of diet coke and voila nice legs and loads of fun YAY

  • this is a great way to burn fat! after a night out clubbing i always find that my legs are more toned. the good thing is that you're not keeping track of time like you might at a gym, and you' probably work harder too :)

  • lol, they wont get smaller, if you want them to get bigger do them with weights, and or the way I do it with a backpack and stuff inside to weigh you down.

  • Yup. This is strength training so it'll build your muscle. How large they get depends on how much weight you use. Body weight, or extra weight like indusrtial says on the back or holding it in your hands will increase the propensity for them to get big. However, they will only get as big as your genetics allows... !

  • Also works for speed improvement. use the same motion to give you the extra little kick that could help football players. And yes it is a nice view.

  • Always, always, always, with any exercise, do as many as you can... until you can't do another! Then, you're done.

    Don't need to do every day - just 3x per week!

  • Wow, thanks! I learned from school, certifications, and continuing education.  Then from experience! Maybe I'll make an institute some day ;) As for working out, since I work like everyone else, I workout about 4 days per week, an hour to an hour and a half each time. I just know how to get the most out of every minute I'm in the gym -- and I hope to share it with you all.

  • How can I work my 'Man' muscles by holding weight and holding a banister for safety?

    Wear a rucksuck full of Dumbells on my back and walk up and down the stairs 20 times - 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri). It's the equivalent of doing your exercise 440 times on those days if done on a staircase with 22 steps. You must have Banisters both sides for safety. Your calves will be commented on EVERYWHERE and they'll be noticable under trousers ('Pants' in the USA).

  • Hi, No.. you will still have man legs! Men and women develop differently but they can do the same exercises.

    You will need to hold a weight if you really want to get the calves of steel!
