You can just hit alt+x to go into xray mode and not have to deal with changing the opacity. I don't know if 2009 had this but I know 2010, 2011, and 2012 all do.

How do you change your viewpoint by only dragging your mouse? I've been using that box on the upper right hand corner (the one that says, left, right, front, etc...), and it's becoming very cumbersome

@FoieGras hotkeys f=front, l=left, t=top, b=back. i hold alt+middle mouse button and drag the mouse to rotate/orbit within the viewport
