Awesome! Just purchased my first set of chalky pastels and I watched this and want the pencils now as well. Truly amazing artwork. Can you use other papers to achieve good results?
@LeopardsChangeSpots yes, its a good idea to try a few different ones if you can. I've been using Clairefontaine Pastelmat lately and I love it. Also, try mount card
You're an amazing artist! I've only been drawing with charcoal, but I think this may be interesting to try. How long have you been drawing with pastels??
@tippydog10 thanks! Charcoal is a good way to start, then start using chalk too and soon you'll want to add colour. That's how I got started, must be 25 years ago
Just lovely, for me that I love hens and roosters,,,but love horses as well,,,animal lover!...I like oils, but because of you I'm starting to have feelings for pastels!..I think I'm going to try it, so I´ll keep on looking at your inspiring talent!! Any suggestion for starters,,,brands about paper and pencils??? You´re great congrats!
@jackittafemme thanks! For starting out, try to get hold of some sanded paper (I use Fisher 400) and a few Faber Castell Polychromos hard pastel sticks - get the same colours you normally have on your oil palette to begin with. They are very versatile hard pastels and are good for broad strokes and detail, so will definitely give you a good start that you can expand on later, without breaking the bank.
Mary, this is great! Love your work, and watching you "speed paint"
Your horses are especially well done, such a difficult animal to paint right.
I notice you use alot of black, esp. in the earliest stages. I have always been discouraged from using black, to this day have a phobia of it. You make it work well!
Thank you :) I always start with black and you mustn't be afraid to use it with pastels as it's very easy to lighten darks - but difficult to darken lights! I think black mixed into wet paint such as oils can destroy colours but you can get away with an awful lot with pastels!
Are you using sanded paper? I suppose with the deeper tooth on sanded paper, it is alot easier to go over the black.
And I have to ask this, as I ask most artists that work with pastel pencils - what do you sharpen with? I have gone thru 3 electric sharpeners, and now just use the handhelds.
Yes, its sanded paper. I use a knife to take off the wood as the pencil wears down but I don't remove any actual pastel. There's always a corner on it for making fine lines. For the occasional times I need a really precise edge, I rub the pastel on fine sandpaper to make a chisel shape.
That is a brilliant pastel drawing... You sure know how to achieve realism with them... and we know how difficult that can be with pastels...
BRAVO!!!! You are so awesome!
Will go check out your website now...
Take Care
Nicole
P.S. What do you use, if anything, to protect your final pastel drawings? I had tried different fixative especially for pastels,,,and it ruined them and sort of ate up the paintings... so was curious which type you use...thanks!
Hi sorry for the slow reply to your Q, I use a little fixative on the finished work (just a light spray is sufficient for sanded paper) and then it goes under glass. Sounds like you might be spraying too heavily if its washing the pastel off.
i want to do something like this.....BUT I NEVER HAVE THE TIME!!!!! D:
