this IS my fav steely dan, some of the best guitar work they've ever done its just a great song and hasnt been played to death !!! but thats just my opinion !!!!
I had begun to think that I'm the only Dan fan around... I knew that there had to be more than just myself. I mean the material speaks for it's self... great to see that there are those who recognize! I thought that I'd never get to see Steely Dan play live but I've actually had the privelege of seeing them live 3 times now. Nothing less than perfection each time!
@badman10ful When I saw the Dan live in KC, I was very impressed with the guitarist but wondered if the bland pianist was chosen so that he didn't show Fagen up on stage. This is the coolest song about the apocalypse ever written. It's inspiring me to make a video with Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas as footage... hmmm...

From Ruthie givin u silver key(needle) to unlock red door(vein,) to chasing the dragon:heroin songs to a little ditty about molesting young girls while they are all at the movies, to hiding out in a shack with a case of dynamite to this beautiful dark cynical song of nuclear apocolypse we will never have another Don and Walt. The Best
Seems like Fagan is describing the chilling events leading up to the inevitable self-delusion and eventual demise of Chris McCandless. The kid who, living by his wits alone, ended up dieing of starvation and plant toxicity in an abandon bus in the Alaskan outback. Many direct allusions to Chris are apparent in: "poison wine, reading last yrs. papers, don't need no helping hand" and many others. If I stay inside, I might live til Saturday" U be the judge, jus sayin'
Started listening to them in the 1980's and honestly it took me a little while to get into them... but I am hooked for life... this is my favorite song of theirs... their sound is so unique... so sublime... such a wonderful blend of musical styles... Fagen, the reluctant front man, has no equal either as a keyboard player or vocalist...
I'm pleased with myself I worked out the best part of the keyboards in this song..I wanted to play it for over 15 years and I finally worked it out..On a Roland GAIA synth..really nice construction..the synth part is amazing...I loved Steely Dan for as long as I can remember..truely remarkable musiciainship..!!
@casestudyification I suppose, in line with the title of the album, "Countdown to Ecstasy," it is some of the words Command Central says before a countdown takes place. I agree the words are largely unintelligible, but I'm pretty sure the voice is saying at one point, "All systems are..."

@tobygrey22 Ah that is so cool. I am from SF so I have been there many times along with Squaw and Heavenly to name a few. I always loved the road trip up there listening to the radio that always seems to play Steely Dan and Hall and Oates a lot whenever you go to Tahoe
Ah...yes. I used to ski Emigrant and KT-22 to this tune on my headphones (mind you. K2-Extremes @ 220cm). One time my earbud popped out, and I heard someone say "Damn...look at that n*gga ski." Point being, I've met Donald (through Roger Nichols), and let me tell you, that's a n*gga. He's blacker that I will ever be...but then again, my Mom's white. Just venting...no actually point. @absolutelyfree1963 How right you are about the bass line. I also love the love 1974 recording of this on YT.
Also check the live Record Plant recording of Linda Rondstadt "You're no good" with Jeff Baxter and Jim Hodder also on YT. The level of musicianship is unreal. Not one flub or slight mistake of any kind and as always super tasty playing .

After listening to The Dan for 30 years, nothing else I have ever heard has ever reached this level of snide, sneering intelligence in talking about the minutiae of existence, while at the same time being so transcendent, and sparkling.
lets face it . I'm WHO daft. Don't like jazz or blues. But in steely dan we have an act that to me are on clash levels.I don't like reggae either but the clash and the dan are so so brilliant at their craft they could turn anyone.
Hey! up yi ya clown!Just had another wee feckin smooch o'er what I felt like writing at the time. I repeat, up yi clownboz...whit the feck YOU gawn on aboot?

GENIUS...what a badass baseline and Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) is sweet...that synth solo at the end sounds like a guitar then a synth again...badass bassline
@skeechful I am almost positive that what you are hearing at the end is a guitar solo (Denny Dias?) playing in counterpoint to the synth line that is a motif throughout much of the song. I'm not positive, but almost positive.
@skeechful yeah. just made sure. It is Denny Dias's solo on the outro. Maybe that's why you like it as a synth solo...cause it's actually a guitar solo
GENIUS....what a badass bassline, Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) had a such a sweet ghost note action. He was never got his credit due.... but what a Badass bassline. That synth solo at the end sounds like a fricken guitar...bitchen
GENIUS....what a badass bassline, Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) had a such a sweet ghost note action. He was never got his credit due.... but what a Badass bassline
Steely Dan are SO brilliant, and it's songs like these that really make my case. Most of their songs that were released as singles (except for maybe "Time Out of Mind" and "Don't Take Me Alive" leave me seriously underwhelmed, compared to tracks like this.
My mom/dad played this when i was 5 at every little party they had.. coming back to it now(I'm 16) I'm so glad they had god taste. The Synthesizer mad me extremely nostalgic too : )
The instrumental at 3:49 is as tight as anything you will ever hear. Try playing air drum with Hodder on a desk or table while Diaz merges. Bet you can't.
the seething cynicism that oozes out of Fagans mouth is so fucking refreshing!

lets face it . I'm WHO daft. Don't like jazz or blues. But in steely dan we have an act that to me are on clash levels.I don't like reggae either but the clash and the dan are so so brilliant at their craft they could turn anyone.
Bad sneakers.
Jeebus. What a feckin song.

"I'm reading last years papers

this is just brilliant stuff, so inspired and yet so smooth, flowing, effortless... mesmerising. One of their best songs ever.

GENIUS...what a badass baseline and Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) is sweet...that synth solo at the end sounds like a guitar then a synth again...badass bassline
skeechful 1 year ago 2
@skeechful I am almost positive that what you are hearing at the end is a guitar solo (Denny Dias?) playing in counterpoint to the synth line that is a motif throughout much of the song. I'm not positive, but almost positive.
jpwjr1199 1 year ago
@skeechful yeah. just made sure. It is Denny Dias's solo on the outro. Maybe that's why you like it as a synth solo...cause it's actually a guitar solo

GENIUS....what a badass bassline, Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) had a such a sweet ghost note action. He was never got his credit due.... but what a Badass bassline. That synth solo at the end sounds like a fricken guitar...bitchen

Steely Dan are SO brilliant, and it's songs like these that really make my case. Most of their songs that were released as singles (except for maybe "Time Out of Mind" and "Don't Take Me Alive" leave me seriously underwhelmed, compared to tracks like this.

@Liamsmom617 this song is way underrated; it is more complex and more beautiful than some of their well known songs

The instrumental at 3:49 is as tight as anything you will ever hear. Try playing air drum with Hodder on a desk or table while Diaz merges. Bet you can't.
