  • the seething cynicism that oozes out of Fagans mouth is so fucking refreshing!

  • F it, I'm going there: this is the Dan's best track.

  • Anybody got a cobalt cigarette I can bum?

  • this IS my fav steely dan, some of the best guitar work they've ever done its just a great song and hasnt been played to death !!! but thats just my opinion !!!!

  • Price is Right @ the solo...

  • The best apocalyptic song you'll ever hear - one of my fav Dan tracks.

  • interesting fact of the day: steely dan is named after a giant steampunk dildo

  • ...is The King of The World as far as I know...read his SUN Digest Papers?

  • That synth solo literally resonates in my brain for hours every time I listen to this song.

  • Countdown to Ecstasy is amazing.

  • I had begun to think that I'm the only Dan fan around... I knew that there had to be more than just myself. I mean the material speaks for it's self... great to see that there are those who recognize! I thought that I'd never get to see Steely Dan play live but I've actually had the privelege of seeing them live 3 times now. Nothing less than perfection each time!

  • @badman10ful When I saw the Dan live in KC, I was very impressed with the guitarist but wondered if the bland pianist was chosen so that he didn't show Fagen up on stage. This is the coolest song about the apocalypse ever written. It's inspiring me to make a video with Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas as footage... hmmm...

  • @badman10ful ur not alone, were just not front page news!

  • i had this on three diffrent cassettes back in the day now im downloaded 20x this is a wonderful feelin song when traveling any where in the world!i luv this song

  • bad azzzzzzzzzz The Dan schooled many fools..

  • Sorry...I've just cum

  • yeah, cassettes are garbage... i should have called you before spending $450 on the nakamichi digital tape cassette player i just installed in my datsun. if you want; i can send you the specs and you can see just how trashy it really is...

  • Anyone know setting at 4:00?? D:

  • ˙·٠•●♥ღ.*♫•* ♫♪

  • Is this the greatest progressive rock song of all time?

  • @WestofHollywood1 you mean the way that 'Peg' is the best pop song of all time?

  • @iThinkThereforeiCan

yes and 'Don't Take Me Alive" is arguably the best rock track ever.

  • If there is such a thing as a Rock God, these guy's were it!!!!

  • No marigolds in the promised land. But there are oleanders, growing outside my door. Did any other pop songwriters of the 1970s refer to any botannic referecnes...besides dope?

  • From Ruthie givin u silver key(needle) to unlock red door(vein,) to chasing the dragon:heroin songs to a little ditty about molesting young girls while they are all at the movies, to hiding out in a shack with a case of dynamite to this beautiful dark cynical song of nuclear apocolypse we will never have another Don and Walt. The Best

  • @ModifiedEvelyn you mean "Count Down to Ecstasy"?

  • Comment removed

  • What album was this from?

  • Assassins cons and rapers might as well die

  • Seems like Fagan is describing the chilling events leading up to the inevitable self-delusion and eventual demise of Chris McCandless. The kid who, living by his wits alone, ended up dieing of starvation and plant toxicity in an abandon bus in the Alaskan outback. Many direct allusions to Chris are apparent in: "poison wine, reading last yrs. papers, don't need no helping hand" and many others. If I stay inside, I might live til Saturday" U be the judge, jus sayin'

  • @hambone9444 This is a post apocalyptic scenario written when this Chris McCandless idiot was about 5 or 6

  • @hambone9444

Um, you do realize this was written when McCandless was about 4 years old, right?

  • Started listening to them in the 1980's and honestly it took me a little while to get into them... but I am hooked for life... this is my favorite song of theirs... their sound is so unique... so sublime... such a wonderful blend of musical styles... Fagen, the reluctant front man, has no equal either as a keyboard player or vocalist...

  • 2 people died from radiation poisoning.

  • Listen to the guitar....it's mimics the radio-frequencies of the 'old ham radio'.

  • About a man surviving a nuclear war..."Watch the sun turn brown" "King of the world as far as i know..."

  • The guitar work at the end always makes me smile.

The drum track is just wonderful!

  • always loved the seque of the line "might as well die......" fade into white noise. Check it out at about 2:53

  • My face is on fire.

  • I'm pleased with myself I worked out the best part of the keyboards in this song..I wanted to play it for over 15 years and I finally worked it out..On a Roland GAIA synth..really nice construction..the synth part is amazing...I loved Steely Dan for as long as I can remember..truely remarkable musiciainship..!!

  • Perfect song for driving to the desert at night. Gives me chills....so good!

  • What is the subliminal voice saying from 2:29 to 2:43?? Anybody know? I'll go to my grave wondering about that.

  • @casestudyification I have no clue, but i have an idea of it being a faded broadcast of some sort.

  • @casestudyification They're saying "Fear the Beast 666!!!"' LOL, just kiddin' dude. :-)

  • Why in the world are we even TALKING about Justin Beiber? This is Steely Dan for pete's sake.

  • countdown ecstasy is a great album

  • With Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Lennon and McCartney, should be Fagen and Becker.

  • KIll justin bieber please

  • Are you two extremely crude blacks or crude, idiotic white guys trying to be black?

  • one of my favorite steely dan's album

  • Ohmigawd and there's a Demi Lovato song advertisement on the video right now. *facepalm*

  • I do like this song better when it isn't in concert. In concert they have a little too much going on for me.

  • It's the "last stand on fiji" for those of us with an unquenchable yearning for artistic depth.........We're holding the beach, surrounded by dumb asses...

  • put me on a desert island with their complete body of work. i'll be alright.

  • @lindadee1000 - Well said.

  • @lindadee1000 What;ll do when the mp3 runs outta batteries?

  • @lindadee1000 Ok how will power that cassette player?

  • @DimensionsofChange now that's more my speed...

  • @lindadee1000 Yeah I collect cassettes to. I like to think I've out hipstered the vinyl crowd with my cassette collection which contains their greatest hits cassette that I got from my dad.

  • @DimensionsofChange i have so many cassettes i've forgotten what's on them! i must say, anyone who uses the term "hipster" is okay in my book! long live steely dan!!!

  • @lindadee1000 cassettes are not cool. They are garbage. "hipster" is also a retarded label.

  • @lindadee1000 And Wagner's RING . So will I - SEE YOU THERE

  • a post-apocalyptic vision of some northern new mexico artsy types?

  • NooGods: The difference is that Justin "Beaver" and his songs will be forgotten 10 years from now. "King of the World" and the rest of the Steely Dan collection (a span of more than 30 years today) will continue to be sung and appreciated for decades to come.

  • The Dan is killer, a thinking mans lyrics and genius craftsmanship. It is still to this day in my opinion cutting edge. I love their unique musical vision. Decades later I still can't think of another band who have done what we have here. I add that this includes bands like "the beta band" and other contemporary bands of the 21st century that I love, but none can do it like this, not like the Dan. Its so very pleasing. I'm 29 and fell in love with them in my early 20's to add perspective

  • @bloodcoffin AJA nailed it for me when it came out in my teens. Cool but aloof and arrogant dudes (I know a few guys who met them). If I was able to compose like that and I was only into music I might be arrogant too...

One of my fave tracks. Tight playing... minimalist as well. Great album.

  • this reminds me of Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, skiing at elevation during the day, and jack and soda and cards at night!

  • @tobygrey22 Ah that is so cool. I am from SF so I have been there many times along with Squaw and Heavenly to name a few. I always loved the road trip up there listening to the radio that always seems to play Steely Dan and Hall and Oates a lot whenever you go to Tahoe

  • @MrVeesworld

Ah...yes. I used to ski Emigrant and KT-22 to this tune on my headphones (mind you. K2-Extremes @ 220cm). One time my earbud popped out, and I heard someone say "Damn...look at that n*gga ski." Point being, I've met Donald (through Roger Nichols), and let me tell you, that's a n*gga. He's blacker that I will ever be...but then again, my Mom's white. Just venting...no actually point. My neighbor just gave me something called Green Earring Kush.

  • @dvdmoe That shite was funny cousin! Ha ha. The first time I was ever on ski's I accidently took the lift to KT-22. Holy crap that's was trail by fire to the tenth degree. Luckily I was 14 years old and still had balls of steal.

  • awesome song...lyrics are amazing...:)

  • I would like to dedicate this song to Harold Camping.....

  • @JWReichert LOL, thats good!

  • The chord changes in this song are so damn incredible and tasty. Glad to have grown up with this type of music instead of the muzak songs about shaking your sweaty balls across my chin BS.

  • @MrVeesworld Yes and the bass line countering the melody and all the other shit... genius.

  • @absolutelyfree1963 How right you are about the bass line. I also love the love 1974 recording of this on YT.

Also check the live Record Plant recording of Linda Rondstadt "You're no good" with Jeff Baxter and Jim Hodder also on YT. The level of musicianship is unreal. Not one flub or slight mistake of any kind and as always super tasty playing .

  • @MrVeesworld Seriously dug You're No Good... didn't know the Skunk and Jim Hodder played on it. Figures though... {grin}.

  • @absolutelyfree1963

Just realized that MrVee was making all of these great comments...you're on top of your music game...huh?

  • @dvdmoe Yeah man!

  • @MrVeesworld You said it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Total dittos.

  • reading last year's papers, although I don't know why..

  • not sure why this track didn't get as famous as others like "Reelin' in the Years" or "Dirty Work"

  • @lishfish it requires too much thinkin for most

  • @lishfish i agree, some people just dont know good music

  • Let's see, the singer has found a companion to share the post-apocalyptic world with, the scum have all been vaporized, and he asks nothing else - typical dark lyrics, love 'em as always

  • to mention boobber in the same sentence as these great musicians is blasphemy but you are right

  • still sounds so fresh ````

  • Dan lyrics and music informed my youth and made me wise beyond my years..

  • i sing the song future apocolypse...in present tense

  • from santa fe to san jose ...

  • I miss mel's videos.

  • Bach of their era.... beautifull...

  • I love the picture and the song is ggreat, but the synth sound is dated.....gggreat geetar work

  • @PJNARS what is outdated now is inovation tomorrow!

  • No marigolds in the promised land,

  • @bradmonium1 let's hope not, lol

  • great tune,,, been missing it for quite a while...-

  • The guitar work on the outro is fantastic!

  • Comment removed

  • I only hope my iPod works after the apocalypse I would really need to hear this...

  • Great song - Audio seems off a tad.

  • when the world ends...I'll be listening to this as i drive through the ruins of santa fe

  • The Dan Jams.....and Why is this guy bashing Hendrix on a Steely Dan video....What an asshole.....

  • AS FAR AS I KNOW, there are few bands that can match the sheer talent and musicality of Steely Dan... not to mention the pentrating lyrics and Fagen's unique plaintive voice.

THAT there are only about 25k views of this super-groove and a dweeb like justin "beaver" has millions... speaks volumes, eh?

  • @NooGods People who dig Steely Dan have jobs and don't have time to "assassinate, con, and rape" the replay button like the JB fans do.

But on a related note, my 12-year-old son LOVES this song!

  • @NooGods

We will dine at Peter Luger's my friend while the dweeb loving masses unsatisfyingly cram McDonald's down their throats. If they only knew.

  • @jmgalbo Cool. Only because I was born in the Bronx... and have kept my East Coast ties intact, did I catch your Luger's tag. Yeah some prime (rib) and (fine) wine would be a suitable repast upon which to reflect our existential dream:)

  • @ 2:25-2:50 - for my tv show...when i get one...an intro in slow motion

  • @NooGods Ikr! None of the youth of today, the main users of this site (I believe), seem to care about these old bands who actually have a hell of a lot more talent than all this teen popstar crap and rappers. THEY don't even play their own instruments and sing at the same time! And they're engineered in the studio. Steely Dan is real. I'm one of the few thirteen-year-olds that realizes this. If I said this in school I would get shunned.

  • @MrMonsterstiffy It's in the dictionary, douchey. Wow, you're a cock!!!!!!!

  • @NooGods I was just bitching about the hits on DTMA vid. Disgusting. lol

  • @NooGods stop with the fucking stoopid comparisons to Bieber. Steely Dan cannot be compared to anyone but Steely Dan.

  • TY for posting this excellent track Vinvento

Dan: the masters of the minor augmented chord licks which they have turned into an art form.

    Ian North Wales

  • this is the best guitar s of any one--be Hendrix --or all below him--nigger--just a man that knows how to do it

  • That reverberating guitar fill is ear-sex.

  • After listening to The Dan for 30 years, nothing else I have ever heard has ever reached this level of snide, sneering intelligence in talking about the minutiae of existence, while at the same time being so transcendent, and sparkling.

  • @geronimo24100 elvis costello?

  • how does this excellence have 22,000 views and crap have millions?

  • @Dave78m We simply have superior taste in music

  • @evelynmh A Men to that!!

  • I can hear it without earphones so I don't know what else to tell you.

  • @thefoppa1000

Get your ears checked because he's saying it.

  • @thefoppa1000

    What are you talking about?

  • not too much longer... i feel like ive been smokin cobalt ciggerettes since the mid 90's

  • Jeff Skunk Baxter is God

  • lets face it . I'm WHO daft. Don't like jazz or blues. But in steely dan we have an act that to me are on clash levels.I don't like reggae either but the clash and the dan are so so brilliant at their craft they could turn anyone.

    Bad sneakers.

    Jeebus. What a feckin song.

  • @hampden12 What the hell are you babbling about? Best to keep these things to yourself.

  • @desolationrow

Hey! up yi ya clown!Just had another wee feckin smooch o'er what I felt like writing at the time. I repeat, up yi clownboz...whit the feck YOU gawn on aboot?

  • One of the most perfect instrumental backgrounds ever, not to mention the lyrics...

  • I love this song so much, I listen to it every time I go running.

    "I'm reading last years papers

    although I don't know why...

this is just brilliant stuff, so inspired, yet smooth, flowing, effortless...Amazing! One of their best ever songs

  • I love this song so much, I listen to it every day when I run.

    "I'm reading last years papers

    although I don't know why...

this is just brilliant stuff, so inspired, yet smooth, flowing, effortless...Amazing! One of their best ever songs

  • The Dan ..... always lush and majestic... jazz rock supreme.... crack musicians... they dont come any better

  • Nothing matters but The Music.... and if this isn't music, I don't want to know what is.

  • Is this great music or what?whatever happened to these gems,oh i know, they're being sampled into todays junk music.

  • I'm making a video for this tune right now.

A machinima video, using Garry's Mod.

    Love this song.

  • OMFG not a single dislike, thats epic

  • Great song! Steely Dan's music always sounds fresh to me!

  • Brilliant orchestration! Fucking fantastic!

I've loved these guys for for close to 40 years.

  • GENIUS...what a badass baseline and Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) is sweet...that synth solo at the end sounds like a guitar then a synth again...badass bassline

  • @skeechful I am almost positive that what you are hearing at the end is a guitar solo (Denny Dias?) playing in counterpoint to the synth line that is a motif throughout much of the song. I'm not positive, but almost positive.

  • @skeechful yeah. just made sure. It is Denny Dias's solo on the outro. Maybe that's why you like it as a synth solo...cause it's actually a guitar solo

  • GENIUS....what a badass bassline, Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) had a such a sweet ghost note action. He was never got his credit due.... but what a Badass bassline. That synth solo at the end sounds like a fricken guitar...bitchen

  • GENIUS....what a badass bassline, Jim Hodder on drums (R.I.P.) had a such a sweet ghost note action. He was never got his credit due.... but what a Badass bassline

  • What an excellent song!!!! Just gets the body movin....

  • that song just made my hair grow 12 inches! and somehow a smell of beer and patchouli is filling the air.

  • Steely Dan are SO brilliant, and it's songs like these that really make my case. Most of their songs that were released as singles (except for maybe "Time Out of Mind" and "Don't Take Me Alive" leave me seriously underwhelmed, compared to tracks like this.

  • @Liamsmom617 this song is way underrated; it is more complex and more beautiful than some of their well known songs

  • ABOSLUTELY LOVE this song... The Dan ROCKS... Guitar licks are SICK all the way through this song

  • Best steely dan song.

  • a underated steely dan song..thanks for posting this gem!

  • My mom/dad played this when i was 5 at every little party they had.. coming back to it now(I'm 16) I'm so glad they had god taste. The Synthesizer mad me extremely nostalgic too : )

  • @1Dblade333 There is nothing like the sound of an ARP 2600

  • One of my favorites from them! The guitar moves nicely throughout...
