To all you idiots that are like "stop calling this bellydancing cause it's an insult to it" or whatever the fuck your opinions are. Always remember that you're ashamed of your own sexuality. Nuff said.
I agree - to label this belly dance disturbs me. As my fellow belly dancers and instructors has said - we spend so much time and energy to promote our dance as an art form and not a striptease or selling SEX.
Loved the music and the fusion was interesting! I just hated the videography! Too much chopping up and moving in and out. Would have been nice to have been able to see the dancers' entire bodies and see their movements in their entirety.
@TheDogcity what the...how?!? they don't even show anything. all they even take off is their gloves!!! u'd see sluttier stuff watching mtv or going to the beach. if u think this is pornographic u must have an extremely dirty mind. comparatively to most of what u see in western society, this is mild.
It´s entertaining and very well done, but I can´t really find significant belly dance moves on it... I think this performance can´t be named a "mix", it is burlesque at least in a 90%, don´t you think??
Well....this is great burlesque dancing. Very cute and sexy!...but honestly, there was very little bellydance. I personally think it should be called burlesque dancing...leave out the bellydance, cuz a few moves here and there don't make it bellydance or bellydance fusion........BUT it was GREAT BURLESQUE!
those who question the clothing or expect this to be straight-up stripping clearly don't know much about classical burlesque. burlesque very rarely constitutes straight striptease. in it's most classical form, it's a lot more about the "tease" than the "strip." as for the clothes, burlesue generally wears clothing that is risque, but still covers the dancer. it's bellydance burlesque because it blends it with burlesque. i liked it. favorited.
I find it insulting that the title is belly dance burlesque. It's not belly dance at all. I think its neat that they incorporated belly dance movements within the piece though. Overall I thought it was pretty tacky. But I guess burlesque isn't my cup of tea
I think this dance is very artistic... and I really enjoyed it. Obviously, its not supposed to be a "traditional bellydance" piece, but coming from someone who is a bellydance performer and I have dabbled in burlesque as well... this dance combines the two of them beautifully. kudos to the dancers.
Time for my 2 cents on this. From reading the title and description (some people on here should try that sometime), this dance is using elements of bellydance, ballet, and burlesque. To me, that says that they are not claiming this to be a bellydance piece. This is a dance piece combining different art forms. I say good job.
I have to agree...I see nothing wrong with this. Freedom of expression people!! Key word there: FREEDOM!!!!! I hope they post another soon, even MORE risque!!!
I think its reallly hot. What would you expect? Something sleazy I bet. Something degenerate, well there is sexy entertainment out there with artistic value that is very hot.
dont be jealous. always a female. do thet make you feel inscure with youre own body or something? it is first a beautiful dance. and, not supposed to be, but IS...hot. =)
do you know how to read moron? I said it was a waste of time!It was boring I was waiting to see something and nothing ever happened, if this is your form of entertainment then so be it, I stated my opinion if it's hot to you then that's your opinion. Did I ever say I was jealous or insecure? NO I didnt NOT !don't read into something you can't understand.
I believe this sort of thing is what many belly dancers spend their lives trying to combat; an over sexualized image of the art form. But I don't know, it looks like a cheap knock of version, an attempt to grab some cash...not artistic at all. Stick to go-go dancing girls.
I actually liked the dance, nice fusion, lovely costumes, but the music was too unspectacular for me.. it's a bit like elevator music really, and that's a shame, because I think it slowed down the whole performance very much and there was not much room for interesting changes and accents during the dance.
I am a belly dancer, and I am not in the least offended by what these dancers are doing. Granted it is not pure "belly dance", but they don't claim that - READ the title!! They claim to be burlesque. They are well trained dancers doing a wonderful job. The Graham contraction at the beginning was one of my favorite moves. Loved it.
@reannan1462 So why does the title include "belly dance"??!! That's what offends me as a professional belly dancer! You, of all people, should KNOW it's not even "pure" belly dance, it's NOT belly dance at all. I spend much time educating students that what we do does not involve striptease, then something like this comes along and they think they can throw belly dance into the mix! It's burlesque, NOTHING belly dance about it!!! PERIOD! Samia Gamal is rolling over in her grave!!
@Rena66 very well put! anyone who calls burlesque 'just another form of dance' is kidding themselves. Burlesque is striptease (ok so they only undress down to their thongs and do it in a cute dancy way) but it's based around seduction. If you take out the seduction there's nothing left
These are NOT belly dancers. These are burlesque dancers doing some belly dance moves. In belly dance there are rules of decorum. These women are breaking many of them. Belly dancers do not dance in garter belts and fishnets, they don't writhe around on the floor, or do shimmys, mias, undulations, or any other move with their feet spread apart, & they never strip anything off, even gloves. 99% of the belly dancers out there would be offended to be put in the same catagory as these dancers.
I agree. This is just... I don't know what this is, other than burlesque. I think the only thing bellydance about this is their bras, simply because they have some coins on them. bleh
@Junietwerps Because adding your own twist, your own style, or something new to a traditional form of dance would be a terrible tragedy. And this would be why the term burlesque was added to the end of this. Its a mixture of two styles, borrowing more heavily from burlesque than belly dance, and I think they pulled it off beautifully. Try looking up Tribal Fusion, where fishnets, shimmys, undulations (with the feet spread apart) and the like are very much the norm.
@WolfInWomansSkin - Tribal Fusion is NOT belly dance, it's a form of it, that's why it's called "fusion". Additionally, I have many friends who are tribal dancers and would NEVER perform like this. You obviously have only "looked up" tribal fusion, you don't actually know what it is because ANY belly dance style does NOT spread their legs at all when they perform. FACT. I've been performing professionally as a belly dancer and teaching for years, so I know of what I speak. You're misinformed.
@WolfInWomansSkin And another note: Adding a dance that celebrates sexually writhing on the floor or the removal of clothing, even if it's partial (as is traditional with burlesque) to belly dance, is wrong. Fusion is great when it's done with a dance that is not a form of striptease, but to add belly dance to this mix is offensive to most of us who go out of our way to educate people on this. Defend it as you will, burlesque is NOT belly dance and it's in poor taste to associate the two.
@Rena66 Ok, fine, so tribal is a branch of belly dance. An offshoot. The point I was trying to make is that many tribal dancers utilize a darker image, with fishnets and untraditional movements. (Yes, I will also agree that the tribal movements are not as obviously sexual.) And make no assumption that I’ve merely “looked up” tribal fusion. I’ve taken several classes, and have taken traditional belly dance classes for years.
But here, I suppose it comes down to a matter of preference. I can see why some belly dancers might be offended, if they are the ones trying to separate their forms of dance from more sexual forms of dance. But as someone who loves burlesque, regular strip tease and other overtly sexual forms of dance, I find no problem with it. Main point being, that maybe combining two things that previously did not go together might not be such a bad thing. Make room for new interpretations.
@Junietwerps THANK YOU!! And very well said! I'm a pro belly dancer. There is no way in hell I would ever support this or call this belly dance. I fight very hard to educate people every day as to what we actually do. 500% agree with you on ALL points. I only wish more people would realize that there is a HUGE difference between being sexy and being erotic. We are suitable for ALL audiences, children included. This is only satisfies the adult crowd.
yes, being a bellydancer I agree and don't see much bellydance in this. However, it was a fusion after all.
To critisize others for this is hypocritical when alot of our own kind are out there damaging it themeselves. I honestly think that those who appreciate BD as an art, know what is and ISN'T bellydance. They didn't claim to bellydancers. So be gentle guys and enjoy the dancing.
Contextual religious perspective: Prostitution is not a sin if the woman has no man, e.g., husband, father, uncle, brother, son, etc, in her life to support her. If she does have a man and the man does not support her, then the sin is borne by the man and NOT the woman prostituting.
Mary religious crime was of working on the Sabbath and not for prostitution.
What do you think women do in brothels? What is the purpose of their dancing in brothels?
The Nekyia Dance Group has validated American Burlesque as a dance form in its own right by overcoming its original 19th century self-deprecating dance of raw sexual objectification without sensuality as a means to expose the hypocrisy of the Victorian Epoch.
Pole Dancing is on a parallel course of validating that dance as a dance form.
Ladies of the Nekyia are pioneers in the art form of Danza!
One again ladies, only one word can describe this dance: Beautiful!!!
Amazing - absolutely amazing. As a burlesque performer, I'm doubly impressed by the precision and artistry, as well as the marvellous seductiveness of the dance. Well done!
... im not happy about this being called bellydance but i do see belly so i guess it qualify-s it? i dunno bellydancers have a hard enough time trying to make this art form legit without people going and pulling the sexy from it and thinking that is what makes the dance...women by nature are sexy...just be careful what you do with our dance...take it somewhere that women can still be respected with..
My girlfriend is a bellydancer, so I do understand the concerns some are voicing here. But I don't think these ladies are trying to pass this off as belly dancing. It is a very sensous, bellydance themed burlesque dance, and I enjoyed it for what it was. The people who think bellydance and stripping are the same thing, I don't think you are ever going to convince otherwise. The rest of us, we already know.
I don't think there is really any point about getting upset with labels. Dance is an evolving art form like any other. They are not claiming to be a pure middle eastern troupe, so whats the problem? If you're worried about how others will perceive bellydance education is a better way then squishing dance fusion (not that Im saying everyone is suggesting that!)
the only bellydance mid-east influence is the music. i dont see any chest isolations, taxeems, body waves or belly rolls. A shimmy on the hips doesnt make it a belly dance. this isnt burlesque either, its a seductive striptease dance end of story.
I wish people would stop calling striptease artists "burlesque performers",very misleading. Burlesque shows incorporated comedians AND strippers/dancers. Comedians are called what they are, Burlesque is a PC term for Stripper....But this is SEXY!
If you look at the end of my post I said it is very sexy. I agree it is done very well, in fact it is choregraphed very skillfully!
But the message they send is a "look at me im sexy" thats not what bellydance is about.
As someone trained in middle-eastern dance, this doesnt qualify as bellydance. As for burlesque there is a great misconception today that burlesque = dancers in sequins/feathers. Its not burlesque w/out comedy.
I really enjoyed this but couldn't see why you felt it necessary to say belly dance. Most of the moves used are in burlesque vocab already and those that weren't are totally transformed in this context. Burlesque with an oriental flavour or some such mmight have been better to avoid confusino with real BD.
this is a great combination of bordello burlesque and belly dancing, thouroughly enjoyable (regardless of your sex) as an piece of art, it is in no way related to "stripping" in the modern sense.
Really nice.. lovely just the right combination, belly dance is sensual just as burlesque is.. how can you use your belly and hips without being so. Some are very deceived..
Historically it was used for all kinds of sensual and sexual reason most now purely use it as a feminine sensual art form, but even today some are still topless in turkey out of preference.
Face the facts, if you can't accept the dances history (Prude!!), you shouldn't be doing it.
ditto Ntalii. Some people I guess want to reinvent past facts. You can't reinvent the past but we can reinvent the future! GO Belly dance Burlesque fusion(I like to call Belly-Q)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
FALSE ADVERTISING! This is not bellydance. This is bordello burly. Thanks so much for making it that much harder for me to convince people I am not a stripper.
I too am undecided about 'burlesque belly dance', especially when so many of us struggle to have belly dance seen without the 'male entertainment' connotations. LittleAmunet and Bugwitch make very good points, below. Still, I love this, it's beautifully choreographed and performed and I think the concession to the striptease element of burlesque dance, by removing the gloves, was subtle and classy. Encore!
I don't think "belly Dance" is being used as a noun but as an adjective. It's burlesque for sure, but it's burlesque with a bellydance theme or influence, not bellydance with a burlesque influence. If that was the case it should have been called burlesque bellydance. At least that's how I came to understand it.
I absolutely love this. The music was very original and well suited to the style of dance. The choreography too is a great interpretation of the music. Bravo!
The topic of burlesque is quite touchy, especially in the bdance community. Unfortunately, there's a lot of ignorance around belly dance, the history & its modern art form. Belly dance is sensual and a celebration. Burlesque is simply another way to do that.
I would love to have a copy of this song...where can I get one?
Well Ladies, it is very entertaining, and lots of fun to watch, the only thing I have on a critique is drop the "Belly Dance" in the title. This is a definately a very well done burlesque piece with an exotic oriental flavor to the music, NOT a belly dance/raks sharki/etc etc
Good work though, I am adding it to my favorites...
Hi, I'm in a burlesque troupe and I think this is a REALLY well-performed piece. Very together, modern interpretation--good luck to you and don't worry about folks who're mean. They can't dance OR look that good in fishnets.
it doesnt matter how i sound to you. i call it like i see it. you arent bellydancers and you need to change the name of this pseudo stripper garbage. dont try to associate pathetic selves with true bellydancers.
I only found video from them at Tribal fest. And when it was shown to me it was shown with a negative comment undermining how they choose to take bellydance and turn it burlesque. But i've loved them from the moment i saw it. They are so amazing and confident and polished!
Don't you ever listen to people who complain about a bellydancers image. You're defiantly not the cause of our image. Your costumes go very well with the kind of fusion you make. And WOW it's a kind of fusion I haven't really seen before. Keep up the good work!
To all you idiots that are like "stop calling this bellydancing cause it's an insult to it" or whatever the fuck your opinions are. Always remember that you're ashamed of your own sexuality. Nuff said.

Modern Belly dancing is the fusion of folk, brothel, and ballet dancing.
A woman's sensuality is a gift of God Almighty. Sexual communion is the reward for careing for family.
Tantric sex: is the modern expression of this concept.
In opposition is "Girls gone skank": not sensuality but self-denigration.
American Burlesque is a derivitive danze of Belly Dancing.
What is Belly Dancing if not the expression of a woman's sensuality in celebration of womanhood?

THATS NOT BELLYDANCE AT ALL! calling this bellydance is a hudge insult...
PirateKittie86 3 years ago
Belly dancing has it roots in what may be described as ancient caberet (strip clubs), folk dancing and Ballet: Russian Ballet Maestra Ivanova fusion.
American Burlesque is a descendent of Egyptian Cafe Belly Dancing.
Mary Magadelene was a Belly Dancer!

The rest of us, we already know.
hartness57 3 years ago
I don't think there is really any point about getting upset with labels. Dance is an evolving art form like any other. They are not claiming to be a pure middle eastern troupe, so whats the problem? If you're worried about how others will perceive bellydance education is a better way then squishing dance fusion (not that Im saying everyone is suggesting that!)

I love the music. Where can I get a CD of this kind of music?
CarouselPony 3 years ago
Drumspyder's "The Nekyia Vol. 1" available on itunes. Glad you like it!
thenekyia 3 years ago
the only bellydance mid-east influence is the music. i dont see any chest isolations, taxeems, body waves or belly rolls.

Dancers are Dancers, the joy of movement is the beauty they are expressing. I think its tastefully done!
NovakMary 3 years ago
If you look at the end of my post I said it is very sexy. I agree it is done very well, in fact it is choregraphed very skillfully!
But the message they send is a "look at me im sexy" thats not what bellydance is about.
As someone trained in middle-eastern dance, this doesnt qualify as bellydance. As for burlesque there is a great misconception today that burlesque = dancers in sequins/feathers. Its not burlesque w/out comedy.

There is nothing belly dance about this video. Thanks for helping to soil the already bad idea people have about belly dance even more. Great job!
anonochan 3 years ago
I really enjoyed this but couldn't see why you felt it necessary to say belly dance. Most of the moves used are in burlesque vocab already and those that weren't are totally transformed in this context. Burlesque with an oriental flavour or some such mmight have been better to avoid confusino with real BD.

this is a great combination of bordello burlesque and belly dancing, thouroughly enjoyable (regardless of your sex) as an piece of art, it is in no way related to "stripping" in the modern sense.
Ellenoire1 3 years ago 2

FALSE ADVERTISING! This is not bellydance. This is bordello burly. Thanks so much for making it that much harder for me to convince people I am not a stripper.

this is an amazing piece and I love it....but boy is it going to make things harder for belly dancers. But damn I love it so

Awesome.....love the staging of this piece.

I think belly dancing can be both. I mean, I admit I am a man who finds it very very sexy, but I DO know the origins of it.
RagabashMoon 4 years ago
I too am undecided about 'burlesque belly dance', especially when so many of us struggle to have belly dance seen without the 'male entertainment' connotations. LittleAmunet and Bugwitch make very good points, below. Still, I love this, it's beautifully choreographed and performed and I think the concession to the striptease element of burlesque dance, by removing the gloves, was subtle and classy. Encore!

Just as many women go to watch Burlesque shows now as men.
inglebritt 3 years ago 14
I don't think "belly Dance" is being used as a noun but as an adjective. It's burlesque for sure, but it's burlesque with a bellydance theme or influence, not bellydance with a burlesque influence. If that was the case it should have been called burlesque bellydance. At least that's how I came to understand it.
Either way you ladies rock!
LittleAmunet 4 years ago 11
very nice, i really enjoyed this one and i love the music, say can you let me know the artist .
comedymagicofray 4 years ago
while I'm all for good fusion and artistic expression - Oriental dance (bellydance) this is NOT
Azhaar 4 years ago 3
I absolutely love this. The music was very original and well suited to the style of dance. The choreography too is a great interpretation of the music. Bravo!
The topic of burlesque is quite touchy, especially in the bdance community. Unfortunately, there's a lot of ignorance around belly dance, the history & its modern art form. Belly dance is sensual and a celebration. Burlesque is simply another way to do that.
I would love to have a copy of this song...where can I get one?
bugwitch 4 years ago 3
Thanks! You can get a copy of this song from Drumspyder's album "The Nekyia Vol 1" on iTunes.

DelphiPianoGirl 4 years ago
oh and did you notice that about 99% of the comments are against your dance. maybe you should take a hint?
haterater22 4 years ago
A mathematician as well, I see!
I'm confused as to why you're saying "I" should take the hint when I'm not even in this video nor am I a part of the Nekyia.
trakgrl99 4 years ago
the only ppl defending this shitty video are the dancers and their friends. so my bad. you are a friend.
haterater22 4 years ago
this is not bellydance. get a clue, bitches. change the name of your dance.
haterater22 4 years ago
Wow, haterater22. Such an eloquent response! You sound so intelligent!
Let's avoid juvenile name-calling and adhere to a more constructive discussion (both positive and negative as you all see fit), shall we?
trakgrl99 4 years ago 2
it doesnt matter how i sound to you. i call it like i see it. you arent bellydancers and you need to change the name of this pseudo stripper garbage. dont try to associate pathetic selves with true bellydancers.
haterater22 4 years ago
Please don't call this belly dance.

Cute but why call it bellydance? Fosse-inspired jazz seems a more appropriate label.
