@eatrocksah wow they kinda have there own sound! the only thing that sounds the same is the dudes voice, i hate when people call/compare them the pumpkins
I'm a huge SP fan and there are similarities, but yes, who gives a SHIT?? People are using influencing and copying and they both are extremes in opposite directions. People say they copied when they don't like the band and say influenced by when they do like the band. just shut up and enjoy the music or listen to music you do enjoy. =D
what the fuck are you people talking about. there more similar to My Bloody Valentine then the Smashing Pumpkins. Silversun Pickups are a neo sho-gaze band. there nothing like the Pumpkins. BUT the Smashing Pumpkins were influenced by MBV as well. Like how Siamese Dream was influenced by MBV and how Silversun Pickups were influenced by both bands. You people should be thankful, Silversun Pickups are the ONLY band today that has the shoe-gaze sound
as much as i can agree with some points of your argument, don't allow "genres" to categorize everything you listen to. listen to what you love to listen to. it all falls under that category of music and if you love it that's all that matters.
I wasn't trying to categorize, its the same old my band is better then your band garbage people always talk about and who ripped off who. I'm a fan of all of those 3 bands, I agree just listen to what you love
Really guys? Really? Yes, SSPU and the pumpkins have similarities, deal with it, its called an influence. I personally prefer the pickups over the pumpkins, dont start a nuclear war just cuz someone has an opinion contradictory to yours.
well fredsalles, that was probably the stupidest comment on this page. No doubt, Silversun Pickups are awesome, but they are not even on the same level when it comes to the Pumpkins. Maybe when Silversun release a double album and three platinum records , maybe they can be compared to the Smashing Pumpkins, but until then, these guys are nowhere close to what Billy, Darcy, Jimmy and James have accomplished over the past decade. Don't be so ignorant
The smashing pumpkins are not as great as you say. They are not original at all. You need to get a life and stop being such a pumkin freak like others are. Think for yourself. The Pickups are an up and coming band, give em a break. I think you may be biting your words when they get big. Bigger than your pumpkins...
i listen to hardcore, megadeth testament,ah mariylon manson,, and im not afraid to say i fuckin love this band, insane melodies. kudos silversun pickups
Brians voice is hot. but his voice doesn't match him, Why couldn't he be, like, a younger, gay (or bi), indie guy?? Like, maybe with shaggy brown hair and blue eyes???
you don't get it do you? Just let them be silversun pickups. They don't need to be compared to another band so people can realize how good they are. What does it prove?
you all have no idea what you are talking about do you??? what's next??? they're the tool of our era haha??? they sound like pumpkins but the music is completely different music talks... and pumpkins speaks in a completely different way then the pickups first... and second if you don't realize that and are going to argue about it no one wants to hear it... no two bands sound the same except those new wave emo fucks... if you can call what they put out music... everyone makes different music...
zwan was pretty awful, no offense to zwan...SSPU is influenced by pumpkins but they have a completely unique sound. i guess every grunge band is "the nirvana of the 21st century"?? no.
I still can't find an appreciable perspective on "Melatonin" though. Could change, who knows? I'm a bit "random" musically, so I'll likely be listening to prog, metal, industrial, or indie as it suits my mood.
As someone who recently found himself alternating through Perfect Circle, Dream Theater, Interpol, The Bravery, Alice in Chains, and Sufjan Stevens, I don't assume myself to be "right," just someone who loves music.
Yeah I know what you are saying. i def prefer the older sp sound they had siamese era. i saw them live recently and they seem to be moving more towards a psychadelic sound opposed to their old fuzzy guitar type sound. We actually seem to have pretty similar taste! love AIC and Tool. message me and we could discuss some good new bands!
These guys are brilliant. And although a few songs on Carnavas are downright terrible (trying too hard to force other instruments/vocals around other bandmates' efforts, maybe?). Most are great though. Hope to see atleast a few more records out of them cause they nailed something solid and memorable on their last effort.
have u even listened to zeitgeist? its a great frickin album. different than old sp stuff but different doesnt mean its bad. and as for sspu, what bad songs are u referring to? bc i have listened to the entire album about 10 times and i dont think there is a bad song on it. but to each his own.
Yeah, I own both of the two albums in question. Maybe it was just the part of the pumpkins sound that they altered/abandoned that attracted me to them in the first place (admittedly I can't find the words to explain what exactly).
As for Carnavas, you're probably right. Some songs have to grow on me first, and having listened to it a few more times since my last post, I've come to appreciate a few more tracks that I previously didn't care for (3 seed, for instance).
"A few songs on Carnavas are downright terrible..."? Are you serious??? Checkered floor and Wasted On prolly are the only two that weren't as great as the others, but they weren't terrible either. ;/
They use a lot of somewhat distorted guitars and open strings like Smashing Pumpkins. They aren't too similar, they just share a similar guitar sound.
i LOVE this band!! their music is fantastic!! they also seem really tight as a band and personally with one another....most importantly, they seem like cool people! that always causes a positive PR for a band and makes more fans out of it at times!!
bigmonkey, look at the red hot chili peppers as an example
they have been famous far longer than all those girls who were crazy for anthony have liked them (or maybe its because those crazy girls still buy the records)..but anyways...
for the simple fact that they make good music
sspu also makes amazing music and they will continue to be around for quite some time
Its not like they had some one hit wonder and popped up for a second, they are on an indie label and happened to get noticed with Carnavas. They are staying on their label and making another album right now, and staying on their label despite Capitol and whatever else big labels trying to sign them.
So with so signs of a sell out one hit wonder band, I would definately say they will stay great whether their new songs are played on the radio or not.
"ditto"...the major labels either have gone pretty much corrupt w/ greed or were clueless to the idea(s) of technology which is hurting them (mjr labels) even more... they got what they deserved... S.S.P's will be around a long, long time... cheers and peace.
Unfortunately, I think these guys (and girl) will be gone soon, as is typical with most buzz bands. "Lazy Eye" will be played to death on the radio, and then they will be gone.
This is too bad because I kinda like them.
But, a short scroll through the comments on this video will give good indication as to who their audience is, little girls who think "Brian is sexy". Unfortunately, little girls change their minds about who is "sexy" far too frequently.
i love popscene (where the interview is taking place). so tiny, but awesome!! and i have endless love for anyone who plays there. i wish i lived in CA....all the good music lives down there -_-

in response to matto902, the first couple times you hear Silversun, its always like...agghhhh... this is crap!!! but once you can fight through some of the technical mistakes, the songs are all really, REALLY well written, this isn't pop shit, and the band gives it their all when they play live, I mean they breath this music. IT's just rough, and for a rock band that's okay, just a little grating at first. give em some time.
