Real Music Peeps !!! Real Music .... When i hear this Song it takes me back to when i was hangn out in the streets, seening alot of things going on, till today i thank my highest power for my life to experience the music back in those days...thank u for posting this...
When you've lived what you sing, there is always an authenticity in your rendition of a song- you have to have been there in order to convey that special feeling. It is the difference between the Randy Crawford and the Patti Austin versions.
@CAGED1702 you betta say that! It's so sad how far the industry has allowed "performers" to produce music. It's not bad enough that originality is passe (everyone's sampling, integrating & often butchering REAL music from the classics), but computers have taken the place of true vocal talent and instrumentation! Oh well, Thank God we can still enjoy the REAL thing... and those of us who know the difference really appreciate it.
@dmnds979 Thanks, mate, I couldn't have formulated it better - but I think there are good young musicians out there who try to continue to preserve this legacy...bit it's a hard struggle..!
As teenagers we all dabble in what's in the streets. There's a fine line between having fun and getting caught up in the street life. Those who get caught up are a sad sight to see. I thank God, Randy and the Crusaders for creating this project. They influenced my life at a very crucial time. All of my role models were caught up in the streets. This song taught me not to get caught up and essentially saved my life. Today I am and have always been drug free and never sold my body for money.
@yellopinki Thanks for sharing!Giving credit where it's due allows the "magic" of music to flow freely.I felt very similar to you as a teen, a few years ago..dabbling in street life as an adult and believe you me, it's a very tempting lifestyle..party scenes, girls, guys, whatever one could ask can be found on the streets. There's a lot to possibly get caught in,and it sneaks up on you. This song gave me my up-bringing and teachings to think about.Rock on Randy!Awesome woman, great song
Every time I hear this tune, I think of New York City in autumn or winter. I love NY and this song. It's interesting to think these chaps are from Texas and not NYC because this song is essential NYC when you listen to it - that's why I love it.
I seem to remember this song being played as part of a sound track from a movie with Bert Reynolds as the lead character. Am I correct about this? Anyone else remember this? It was a very long time ago.
@sputnik9453 ...this was used as the opening music in 'Sharky's Machine' from 1981, which not only starred Reynolds, but was also directed by him. I believe the soundtrack also included Sarah Vaughn's 'Funny Valentine'. Critics consider it Reynold's best work....hard to fail with a soundtrack as good as this.
Words with such truth are rarely ever spoken such as the lyrics from this song. Only those who have lived days and nights as those depicted within this masterpiece can understand the magic, the turmoil, and the glory of the decay lived one hustle at a time. I was there... once... many years ago, but no longer, and missing every day when I was.
iTunes(UK) are charging £7.99 just to get this One track on the album. You cannot purchase this song on it's own. Greedy bastards! The industry is worried about illegal downloads. Well, make them available at reasonable cost and we'll buy. Thank goodness we have youTube and the good people who upload these great tunes for us to listen to and enjoy again. Thanks.
How the hell does this song not make all time greatest song lists, it doesn't crack Rolling Stones top 500. This is better than most of the songs on that list. Jazzy and funky, great lyric and melody, virtuoso musicians, fantastic lead vocalist. Timeless.
From one of my dad's favorite movies: "Sharkey's Machine". Burt Reynolds, Bernie Casey, Henry Silva, Rachel Ward, Victorrio Gassman, Brian Keith, Charles Durning and Earl Holliman. The only stars missing were James Gardner, Angie Dickinson and Paul Winfield.
I saw The Crusaders with Randy Crawford at Stanford University back in '79 or '80, and they were amazing. "Street Life" brought the packed house to its feet. I believe they also had Airto Moreira with them that night. The true test of any group is how they sound in person versus what they do in a recording studio, but hey were even better in person than their recordings.
This always reminds me of a cold night wandering through New York City....funny since these fellas are from Houston. I always think of a cold December night chilling in Manhattan
Awesome! This, along with "So Far Away" are my favorite two from The Crusaders. This is such a wonderfully haunting song, epecially the last part. And I agree: Randy's voice is perfect for this song. I can't see anyone else, save, maybe Aretha (back in the day) doing this song.
And thanks for the entire, extended album version!!!
One of my favourite versions this. I remember listening to this when in college and loved it then and love it even more now. Many of the new artists can learn something from these artists.
I am 36 years young (aaaaarrgh!!!), and this song (esp this version) is my favourite song ever. Have grown up listening to it, and have loved it since I was about 12. x
This is music, "top de la crème". One of my favorites from 79, a year with so much good music. Part 08:52-11:14 is magic. Thanks to you Randy and The Crusaders.
THIS IS REAL MUSIC AND MUSICIANSHIP! RANDY CRAWFORD SINGS THE SHIT OUTTA THIS. DENIECE WILLIAMS IS ABOUT THE ONLY OTHER VOCALIST THAT COULD'VE DONE THIS. THE CRUSADERS IS MY ALL-TIME FAV JAZZ GROUP AND ALL I CAN SAY TO THEM IS THANK YOU!!
The Real version of "Street Life"-unedited... I hate when the other versions cut out the beginning.....leave it the way they wrote and recorded it!
To the kid who listens to this-you're alot smarter than your friends. You know good music when you hear it...It's probably much better than what your friends are listening to.
Still one of my all time favorite songs....30 years later.....where does the time go?
every so often, a song comes along that stays with you for years...this one is it for me...i am crazy about this ...it's not just a song...it's an experience that remains timely and probably always will...classic to life in every sense of the word....this generation doesn't have a clue
@kiddo097 Sweetie, if you’re listening to this type of music at 13 years of age I can guarantee that you are going to do great things in your life because you know what truly good music is!! Keep listening and growing and if you want to hear another great cut find the Jones Girls "Nights over Egypt" I think you will like that cut as well. Peace and blessings!!
@mrronman2015 couldn't of said it better.....I'm a young gyal, but when hearing this song, it takes me back to a different time...as if I'm living in it...walking down hollywood blvd--exactly!
And wouldn't you know it, Netshitz doesnt instantly stream Sharky's Machine. Douche bags.
