@pbobcat to lazy to look for the post you're responding to, but "you should take a irony deficiency test" is hilarious so I'm pretty sure you won in whatever you were talking about. Probably something to do with "hate is all you need"
Great band , great song , its about the failed relationship , and about the countriesnwho fake love with charity , and is a ironic tribute to the Beatles. very smart , draws attention, I found them thru Gunslinger Girl , went to Chemikal Underground on youtube , and discovered The Phantom Band , Mogwai , Areogramme(sorry bad spelling ) , Arab Strap, some really good music from a band that would have sold out sports arenas in the late 70s. the price of indi production is mass distribution.
Its a look at what America and most other countries, and people do, run in and pretend to love, but instead, go in with hate, ruin everything and get what they want, "This is how i won the west". By pretending to do things in the name of charity, you can do whatever you want. It has a whole lotta other meanings and i think "hate is all you need is" is definitely sarcasm/ironic.
The idea is: love doesn't exist where there is no hate. The idea of eradicating hate from yourself and of yourself and the world is therefore absurd and can only be a cause of extreme anxiety. This song is enlightened.
IMO This song is talking about a failed relationship. And he feeling contempt toward his ex. He is coping with hate, and justifying it is all around him. It is easier to forget about someone this way "hate will help you what you are looking for"
An ironic and brutal song. This whole album is a whole level of dark I have not experienced before, because it can be light-hearted about the despair. Both beautiful and really screwed up at the same time.
What's ironic about them splitting is their type of sound is really becoming popular. I wonder if they were ahead of their time? The retro sound they have in "Hate" seems to be all the rage now. It baffles me that they didn't take off, they were soooo good.
The Delgados sound sometimes kind of remind me of Ben Fold's Five, but I like The Delgados much better. I wish they would have gotten their due respect so the the group could still be around.
Probably could have been hailed & recognized by all as one of the greatest bands if they were around the right time (era) & got the right endorsements, but instead they will probably go down as one of the most under-appreciated bands in comparison to their talent & the quality output of songs.
haha i'm watching the series right now. i was distracted by the song and i HAD to look them up. good to know that i'm not the only geeky one here. (i don't mean that in an offensive way. geeks secretly run the planet.)
@jcskater89 Aye, but it is a very dark parody of the kind of attitude yer get from the less inteligent population of Glasgow....also, it a wordplay on "All you need is love" by some group called the beatles? dont know if you heard o them? Used to be popular some time ago. Cool tune though.
I was going to say to someone who asked were they being sarcastic, 'Yes, they are,' but it's so much more than sarcasm, it's like a religion, a theory, a theorem, a revelation, a pointing of fingers at the darkness in everyone's inner selves that we needed to survive in a hostile world and now need to control because we are more hostile than the world.
Did you like that?
I didn't know how to explain it but I think I did.
I haven't heard them til I caught their performance on Jools Holland. With Warren Zevon, Tracy Chapman, Angie Stone, Nick Mason, and Joe Strummer, they seemed a bit out of place even on such an ecclectic show, but on their own I enjoyed their set.
ive watched gunslinger it's very good but the band i thought the light before we land was their only good song until i heard this song and now i love all their songs
the delgados have quite a variety in their albums, which should be checked out before making sweeping statements, although 'hate' is easily my favourite. but for music like this, whether you like it or not, you can't deny they do it better than everyone else. melodies, lyrics, arrangements, even production. the delgados really never got the recognition they deserved which, ironically, will make their following (like me) ever more fervent. pro delgado! huzzah.
It's true most indie groups sound the same, they do and I personally only liked the song Light Before We Land, it's beautiful and I noticed this band because of Gunslinger, but I haven't heard anything from them that tops that song... yet
Suffice to say, they got more exposure from the anime rather than because they're really good
I wonder how bands like these become popular. Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but I personally can't see very many redeeming qualities in this band. I think it's the same problem I hav with most Indie bands these days, they all sound the same.
I dunno, I'm not trying to say you guys shouldn't like them, you can if you want to, but I think it's kinda tragic when musicians, who should have something to make them unique, sound like they're all emulating the same album.
Yea didnt know about such a great english band even though I live in england. It took a great japanese animation to know about them. One of my fav bands ever great tunes great band. And great anime too of course.
Their best song is "pull the wires from the wall" From the Great Eastern album IMO. but Hate is one of Alun Woodward best song along with "Girls of Valor" and "The Drowning Years"
yeah.. i found out about this band through GunSlinger Girl...so don't be embarassed when i heard that song...the light before we land... i said to myself.. i gotta find out who sings that song.. it's friggin awesome... and ever since... i'm totally in love with The Delgados....they're fantastic..more people should know about them cuz they r so talented..
You know, it's a little embarrassing to admit but I didn't know about these guys until they used "Light Before We Land" in the anime Gunslinger Girl. I'm so glad they used it :)
