  • FUCK U!, BITCH!

  • 15/24 ouch! Who knew the hurt locker would do so well

  • boring asshell

  • If you hate awkward car rides then you'll love my new video! =D

  • not bad guesses, close.

  • foreign film and screenplays fail!

  • I like that he got all three short categories wrong.

  • I think it's pitiable that this guy (or any person) critiques movies for a living. How sad is that? Does it help anyone? Is society benefitted? Is there a contribution made to the world? No. It's just people giving their opinion of a movie and claiming to be experts. There's no such thing because everyone's tastes are different. Sorry, but Roeper's one of the worst. His ego and attitude are laughable because of his self-importance. Sad, sorry little man.

  • Comment removed

  • oh yeah? and what do you do for a living? do you go around rescuing damsels in distress and saving the world?

  • And you call meat dumb? You're standing up for a guy who's so bad at his meaningless job that he got the majority of his predictions WRONG! He's obviously not very good at it. He just thinks he is. Anyone who's heard him off camera (and on) knows his ego.

Any job has more meaning, merit and makes more of a contribution to the world than so-called "movie critics." Even YOUR'S and you think meat is dumb. What's dumb is the people who pay him to know what HE thinks. Who cares?

  • any job has more meaning, merit and makes more of a contribution to the world? what about porn stars?

btw, who the fuck hacked my account..

i never left comments saying 'just called and got off.. thanks!' and 'think.' someone must have fucking hacked me.

btw, meat is dumb, meat is very dumb.

  • @meatissodumb

    Huh? Meat is DELICIOUS.

  • @ClumsyRoot

i never said it wasn't very delicious..

    just dumb.. think cows

    .. and you

  • @meatissodumb

    I'm still not following...

Are you saying that it's dumb to eat meat?

  • nice job roeper. 9 wrong. That's 62.5%

Haha. "Trust me on this, the white ribbon's gonna win..."

  • FUCK FIOS

  • i wonder if roeper has asked ebert to inherit the thumbs up/dwn trademark. I would there is money to be made.

  • just called and got off.. thanks!

  • think

  • Outstanding video, Richard! - though, a bit condescending at the end. Still, I would give it two thumbs up. lol

  • @corpen11 I partially agree with you about avatar should not be nomitated to best movie. But the technology behind avatar included the digitalization of the facial expressions of the animation voice artists... In other words it is a new technology which should be appreciated by the academy because its foundation values innovation. I rather find ridiculous not having won best sound editing when they've invented a language or original screenplay when they've invented a whole world. But it's biz

  • Thanks for nothing! 15 for 24 on predictions, man you suck!

  • an awful nightmare? the movies that people actually go out and wait in line for and see over and over again are the ones that get beat out by movies that nobody goes to see. at this point, if i was a film maker, i could care less about winning an oscar. i'd rather have all of america loving my movie than a select few stuck up overly critical jerks.

  • So Porkys, The Blair Witch Project, Signs, Meet the Fockers, Scooby Doo 2, Phantom Menace should all have been nominated for best picture based on that criteria. Just because something is popular doesn't make it good . Btw, just because a movie uses CGI doesn't mean its not a good movie - its how that CGI is used that matters - does it help with effectively telling the story.

  • no i don't nessicarlirly mean that movies like that should be nominated, although i would have voted for porkys lol. i mean that out of the ones chosen by the academy from there it should be based upon public opinion. that way they weed out movies such as white chicks and what not but give the most loved movie out of the best of the year the oscar. thats just my opinion. i'm not trying to start any youtube war in here.

  • sometimes i hate the oscars. if you look up the way THE COMMON PEOPLE voted, almost every actual winner was barely voted for. the hurt locker had 12 percent of the votes and bigelow only had 22 percent of the votes. i think it should be based more on what the people like as opposed to a bunch of stuck up snobs

  • Well Senor Roeper,

your precog skills were flat this year. you got 15/24 right...mostly on the big categories---which were a bit lopsided anyway.

those categories like "sound editing" and "short animated film" were a little out of your grasp....despite your opening diatribe on this about those two in particular.

63% this year. better luck next time!

  • Lots of overrated films this year! But even though Avatar was overrated too, it was still the best film, and should have won

  • Roeper missed both screenplay predictions.

  • He did pretty good, he got all of the ones that most people care about.

  • @stargirlme65, yeah except for AVATAR winning every other category.

Either way, it was a fair prediction

  • For the record, Richard got 16 right, 8 wrong. However, he did name Hurt Locker as Best Picture winner, which was correct.

  • Inglorious Bastards was robbed of Best Original Screenplay..

  • @CosmoHunter24 I know, that was the only real disappointment for me.

  • @WatchMyGayVideos

Sorry bro, but you're gonna need to give me some examples of all the movies he "stole" from to re-write WWII. Oh wait... there are none. There is a fine line between inspiration and "stealing". Ingourious Basterds was one of, if not the most original screenplay of the year.

And did you really think District 9 would win ANYTHING? Like Roeper said, you have no idea what you're doing.

  • @clutchcockrockets

Way to be mature, misspell my name intentionally when I didn't do anything wrong.

District 9 had the potential of winning the screenplay category but unfortunately that Hurt Locker producer who did alot of spamming voter's emails before he was uninvited to the ceremony obviously played a huge part in how the votes went down. This was rigged just like the 2000 Presidential Elections.

It's a well-known fact that Tarantino tends to steal or pay homage to every movie he's seen

  • District 9 shouldn't have won best screenplay because it didn't play devil's advocate and explain why mistreating the aliens was justified.

  • So AVATAR's liberal mistreatment of the environment was new compared to the apartheid in Africa?

    WTF?

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos Avatar wasn't about the environment.

  • it so fucking was!

it was about how everyone should be nice to forests, not destroy trees or take land from the Native American Aliens for their own selfish cause.

If you didn't get that message from that film, you were either asleep or don't pay attention anymore

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos You're the one who didn't pay attention. The movie is called Avatar. Please look up the term.

  • I know what it means. It's meaning has nothing to do with what I was talking about?

BTW, why the hell are we still talking about the Oscars when they're done & over with?

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos "It is meaning has nothing to do with what I was talking about?"

I laughed. The meaning of the word has everything to do with what you were talking about.

  • @CosmoHunter24 Fuck Inglorious Bastards!

  • @Theakker3 Fuck YOU!

Inglourious Basterds was great, what are you talking about?

  • @AandR1408 FUCK YOU!!! That film is an insult to the millions who died during that horrific war!!!

  • @Theakker3 Well, in all due respect, it wasn't supposed to be accurate. It's Quentin Tarantino's war fantasy about the jews getting back at the nazis.

  • @AandR1408 Which is just stupid because the whole thing makes absolutely no sense.

  • @Theakker3 I say watch it again. I didn't enjoy myself when I first watched it, but then I gave it another chance. Well worth it.

I don't exactly see how it "makes no sense", it's pretty plain as to what the plot was.

  • @CosmoHunter24 jep,totally robbed

  • There were a couple you told us to trust you on, yet you were DEAD WRONG. Why were you so cocky and certain?

15/24. But I do appreciate the video, it was very nice of you to make some predictions just for youtube.

  • ehhhh 15/24

  • 9 wrong, way to get cocky Richard. Cya next year when maybe you can get double digits wrong.

  • YEA!!! So glad Avatar didn't win. I'm sorry, but you people who are madly in love with it are blind. See that movie without the effects and it's bad.

Besides it's not good when no actors or actresses are nominated for an award from the same movie....

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA..... Miracle Fish!

  • .................... Avatar should've one....

  • Wow last year you missed 2/24 and this year you got 2/24.

  • 15/24 but nice try

  • Apparently someone's never heard of sarcasm.

  • I'll give ya a hint. My last post was also sarcastic.

  • dumbass roeper.

  • The underlying tragedy in why I trusted Rich so much with my office pool, is that he sounded SO SURE...like I was speaking to the future through a medium

  • The Hurt Locker raped Richard's picks this year like the Academy raped this year's dead people montage

  • Wow Richard Roeper you completely failed. Epic FAil.

  • trust me on this one : Yeah, right..

  • he got original song right he got original screen play wrong he got animated short wrong he got documentary short wrong he got best live action short wrong he got best makeup right he got best adapted screenplay wrong he got best supporting actress right he got best art direction right he got best costume design right he got best sound editing wrong he got best sound mixing wrong he got best cinematography right he got best original score right he got best visual effects right
  • Richard you cost me $200 you moron. Anyone can get best actor, supporting actor, and best supporting actress this year.

For this to be how you make your living, you are pathetic.

  • big LOL at you for losing $200 because you followed just one critic's opinion.

  • He's an editor in the Chicago Suntimes actually, does this on the side.... And you cost yourself $200, live up to your own failure. You chose your own destiny, you didn't have to follow him.

  • So far he has 7 wrong.

  • I didn't watch, what was his score?

  • Get fucked up...

  • Three more losers right there. How Roeper has a job is beyond me...

  • Richard is fallible...

  • Wow Richard, your picks are the absolute worst. You nailed the obvious ones, but were just atrocious on everything else. Hope nobody went with this clown's picks...

  • Adapted Screenplay went to Precious....

  • Comment removed

  • Hurt Locker won for best original screenplay....

  • hahahaha, fail. man--I called more of them than you so far.

Go SUNY Oswego Cinema and Screen Studies Dempartment!

  • animated short wrong, documentary short wrong, original screenplay wrong...........

  • Well it won't be 22 of 24 this year..

  • Ugh, if Avatar wins I will lose all hope in the Oscars. I don't think special effects with a mediocre story is worth an Oscar. I'd rather have UP win.

  • he got best animated feature right

  • he got best supporting actor right

  • Roeper's right. The way to win the Oscar prediction pool is to pick who most likely *will* win, instead of who *ought to * win. Opinions don't count when money's on the line.

  • so far, 61/81 times at the oscars. the movie that won Best Director also won Best Picture. so which ever Director you chose, your best bet is to also choose the same movie for Best Picture. Just saying since some people think Best picture doesnt pair up with Best director

  • yeah but the academy doesn't believe in auteur theory. they're also very much in love with producers--maybe more in love with them. just something to consider.

  • yea that's a good point, but I wasn't trying to imply the influence of that theory

  • Nah, I dig it. You we're right anyway so point made, haha.

  • if it were up to people

    best picture would be avatar

but since its up to other actor, directors, and producers....its most likely going to be the hurt locker.

  • EVERYBODY!!!! CHECK ME OUT AT walkmanproductions1

  • Avatar was not a good movie. it had wonderful special effects but BUT THE STORY HAS BEEN DONE DOZENS OF TIMES. and its not a very good story either

  • avatar shouldn't win best picture. i'm just sayin

  • he's sitting near wheree the

"st. valentines day massacre" happened. I believe thats "holy name" cathedral in the background.

I also agree 'up in the air" should win instead of "hurt locker"

  • plm

  • Loved avatar but I gotta agree with Roeper, hurt lockers gonna win. I also loved The blind side, I think I'm one of the few that liked the movie, too bad it won't win anything.

  • Avatar

  • ... i didn't get a ballot lol.

  • Thanks Richard !! We miss you. =]

  • I know it will win but The Hurt Locker was no where near as good as Up in the Air

  • What about the new doc Automorphosis ?

  • HURT Locker or District 9!

  • cool story bro

  • hurt locker should not win sawit ok but there wer better

  • Agreed

  • For Best Picture - As long as Hurt Locker doesn't win, I'll be pleased...

And if Christoph Waltz doesn't get Best Supporting Actor, I'm never watching the oscars again...

  • @Matuxmatux Waltz has that on lock. It's almost a no-brainer like Javier Bardem was for No Country. Mo'Nique is probably a lock also, but you never know.

I really want Hurt Locker to get Best Picture. How many times do you get a deconstructionist, character-driven movie loaded with old school storytelling techniques these days?

  • Lots. Bourne Identity, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Frost/ Nixon & more.

District 9 should win. How often do you get a low-budget film, with an original idea that can actually be taken seriously, have zero star power, and not be boring at all?

  • @Matuxmatux I couldn't agree more, if Christoph doesn't win supporting actor, i'll never watch any of it again nor pay any attention to it at all (even though he should be winning best actor since he led the movie and could be argued to be the main character). And yes please anything but Hurt Locker. Nothing special.

  • avatar is superoverated

  • Avatar wil win. but it shouldn't.

  • You are correct, LOL.

If should be either Up in the Air, Hurt Locker or District 9

  • WAIT!!!!! I do remember something...something about the host of the show being an uber jackass and not wanting him to advance or something like that...I didn't get that, thus me turning it off...I mean, I got it, but...no, booooooo....Regis would never have done that!...Even if he did THINK it would make a "good" "plot"...(emphasis on the separated quotations, each word deserves their own set, for various reasons)

  • Yep, Slumdog was a piece of shit and I have no idea why that movie won. 10 years from now, no one will even remember that shit.

  • Slumdog was overrated and I couldn't agree more.

    Frost/ Nixon should've won!

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos what? lol

no way, slumdog was awesome.... one more thing, avatar will win... take care haters

  • Another troll with nothing to say.

You have ADD & love crappy CGI & a cliche story over an actual movie

  • nothing to say ? verbal agression is the weapon of the weak... add? hahahaha

Actually avatar is a lot more than cgi, "cliche" you mean as in "drama".. well there is nothing "not" human in drama even in sci-fi movies... they are "our" perception of human sensivility... The academy awards films that contributes to the industry, and I think they know better than me and you... now tell me, whose pictures you'd like to win in 09 and in 10? slumdog was bad? lol

If you don't like movie go read a book

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos Sorry the the Best Picture that year was not even nominated, THE WRESTLER

  • NO FUCKING WAY!

I hate Mickey Rourke & anything else that director has done. The Fountain was a beautiful, boring mess; Requiem for a Dream was depressing exploitation; and Pi put me to sleep before I even started it so he fucking sucks.

The Wrestler was nothing new & the critics were cashing in on that film's popularity.

Frost/ Nixon didn't need any shocking death scenes, nudity or even an explosion to become a modern-day classic

  • Wow. I agree w/ you 100%. LOL!

  • Thanks, and dammit!

District 9 took home zero nominations.

    FUCK YOU OSCARS!

Somebody bribed the voters & bastards who have worked there too long.

Is anyone going to honestly watch a depressing war flick as often as either of these scifi epics??

    I don't think so!

  • just to be clear I was talking about how u claimed hurtlocker was overrated, but i didn't (unless u are saying u felt avatar was overrated, which would make all of these comments pointless! lol)...But I rented it, but could not get into it...to be fair, technically, I've never seen it, but at the same time, it did not hold my interest, so I guess that says a lot huh...i just turned it off...isn't it about the indian version of who wants to be a millionaire or something?

  • Best picture should go to Avatar. Failure to recognize the movie's many achievements - visually and box office to name a few - would be a mistake. It captivated the world and for that it deserves to be labeled the best picture of the year.

  • true, but if that is so....why didnt The Dark Knight win? it wasnt as stunning visually, but the direction, the acting, and the box office were all there.

  • I absolutely thought The Dark Knight should have at least been nominated Best Picture. Why that wasn't nominated is absurd. But Dark Knight isn't as huge as Avatar so i'm not going to accept that comparison. I'm not saying every visually stunning movie with a very good box office record should win best picture. As I mentioned previously, there are a number of things that qualify Avatar as the Best Picture.

  • yes thank you. yes i agree with you. However as great as avatar is, i am a bigger fan of Inglorious Basterds. I hope that wins best picture, it was so entertaining, as was avatar. Idk i just think what tarantino did with that movie was very different and original. With that said, im thinking avatar wins best picture. The hurt locker was good, but avatar was even better

  • If The Hurt Locker wins, it'll be the biggest disappointment since Crash won. The Hurt Locker was far from the revolutionary war picture it's said to be. Too often in that movie inexplicable things 'happen'. I put happen in quotations because, well, what actually happened in that movie? There was no story, little character development, and was predictable (SPOILER ALERT: Did anyone not think the Yale solider was going to go out with the crew and die?)

  • I would rather The Hurt Locker win than that piece of shit , Avatar. Avatar was too much CGI and a rehash of a tong of story-lines that have been told a thousand times. EFF THAT MOVIE

If it were up to me, any of the three Up in the Air. Hurt Locker, and Inglorious Basterds would be great picks.

  • Yes, either Hurt Locker or District 9 should fucking win!

Up in the Air is also worthy but that should just win every category in general, LOL!

  • @WatchMyAwesomeVideos You like District 9 but not Slumdog Millionaire? How...?

  • facebook(.)com/TNobleProductions

    Become a fan

btw delete the () in the link

  • i thinks it's amazing that when people are disagreed with then the person disagreeing is considered a hater...I guess I am a hater because I liked hurtlocker and feel it is not overrated, yet u do, too? Wow, this is confusing:-/

  • sjajno

  • I miss Roeper...

  • Pretty good predictions Richard, my only disagreement is that I think Cameron will get the best director oscar, but hurt locker will, unfortuanately still win best picture. Hurt Locker is soarly overated. Good but not best picture worthy I think.

  • good

  • Sorry but Avatar was a piece of shit movie.

  • @Yerzriknot it wasnt a piece of shit movie just not oscar worthy

  • Avatar had ups and downs. Great movie, but not best picture material

  • I thought Zoe Saldana was absolutely breathtaking in Avatar.

  • "Cars" was nominated for Best Animated Feature. "Happy Feet" won.

  • @Jedisunscreen That's because Cars was Pixar's worst movie ever.

    Up was actually good.

  • Obviously, judging from these comments and everyone else who was asleep in the theater and all of the other blogspots I have read, I am not the only one...We may be in the minority, but, ummm, so? Ur point? Are u trying to say that just because more people liked it than disliked it, that I am cancelled out? I didn't like it...end of story...just like u liked it, end of story...who cares?

  • Avatar is overrated in my opinion, actor wise. But it defienlty deserves an award in visuals.

  • i wish just once they would have an oscars where half the awards were shockers..i mean, i agree with most of his pics..but still...bland

  • I saw THL, great movie. I was surprised it was even nominated for best picture, I did not expect that would be an academy choice for best picture, recall Ridley Scott was nominated for best directing for Black Hawk Down, that made sense to me. But since THL was nominated I can see it beating out Avatar for best picture. it is interesting that a film can get oscars for 6 categories but still not get best picture. I want to read some comments on why THL should get best picture over Avatar.

  • Thanks Richard. That's cool that you embraced youtube as a way to do this cus it really is an ingenious way to be able to make a video like this.

  • Comment removed

  • @mhussain1991 No way... it's not good enough to beat out the Hurt Locker.

  • @Amacalot I'm concerned about-- was it one of the producers? -- who was campaigning against Avatar. He's barred from the ceremonies, and I am afraid that this will influence the voting, causing THL to lose the award.

  • Hmm... that's too bad. I hate how political the voting is for the Oscars, it just means that the best movie doesn't always win.

  • Avatar was boring...Not to mention we got to hear the same dialog James Cameron has been using since freaking Terminator and Aliens...Zzzzz...I didn't like it personally, and just because I expressed why I felt the way I felt about it doesn't mean that I expect everyone else to feel the same...And "practically everyone" liking it is not going to make me reevaluate my review

  • Not that I really want to defend Avatar, but how exactly is the dialogue the same as in Terminator & Aliens?

And who watches these films for the dialogue anyways?

  • he used the same scientific terms, some of which are made up, that he used in both aliens and terminator...and lmao at ur attempted cynicism...The reason i know this is because i am an AVID james cameron fan, and can recite those movies beginning to end, (yeah, dork much! lol) which is why it stood out to me in avatar, which is why avatar did not impress me...it's like he meshed everything together and made it blue...it has nothing to do with watching for dialogue...nice try though

  • I wasn't really trying to be cynical. These ARE all primarily action films, and I think it's a fair statement that people watch them mainly for the action & special FX

Terminator and Aliens in particular has tons of great, memorable lines though. Avatar has hardly any. Which is why I was a bit confused by your statement I suppose

  • yes, they do...well, I was basically saying that I wasn't necessarily watching for dialog, but what was said did stand out because I recognized it...And thankyou for saying that actually, because that is my point...people watched for that reason specifically, most people, which, there's nothing wrong with actually...but it's annoying when people put it up above everything else based on that alone...maybe I am being too cynical myself lol but I get what u are saying, as well as aquaman

  • Saw both. Loved The Hurt Locker. Liked Avatar. Jeremy Renner's performance was amazing.

  • Richard is great. Funny and informative.

  • well i doubt that i know alot of people who see it the way i see it im probably part of some backlash because im easily offended and i like to have a good plot in a movie
