On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I visited the Bluthner piano shop on Hollywood blvd. During my visit there I was interested in a photo of the lady who runs the shop and a photo of DHP. Turns out he has many Bluthner pianos and is an acomplished pianist ! He probably isn't playing in this video, but by all accounts - he sure can !

David Hyde Pierce studied classical piano at Yale. He wanted to be a concert pianist at some point but decided he didn't have the commitment.

In general Niles' hands match the music better than Frasier's. Obviously that doesn't prove he is actually playing, but it is easier to mime convincingly when you can actually play the instrument.

This isn't David playing live. The piano in this scene doesn't actually have strings strungs on it.

In one of the Frasier bloopers you can actually see Kelsey pressing on the keys of this piano and it made no sound.

Are you sure he's not playing live? I could have sworn the director's commentary spoke of both actors' excellent piano talents, which made it a "pleasure to film this scene". Either way, it's definitely David playing - recorded or not! :)

Yes, on one of the bloopers the piano was prepared, but I'm quite sure it's David playing here, he nearly became a real pianist after all...
