  • I too saw this during movie breaks on HBO. I had forgotten about it and now I get to share with my children:)

  • I loved this as a kid, watching it between movies on HBO. I'm so happy to have found it again here. Thank you for sharing it!!

  • I've been searching for this video forever. I thought I'd seen it on The International Film Festival, but I guess it *was* on HBO as other posters have noted. I googled all sorts of phrases but "Cockaboody" was the thing did it. Adorable and timeless. Thank you Mr and Mrs Hubley.

  • The older daughter here is, right now, the drummer for Yo La Tengo.

    Just sayin'.

  • I have loved this video since I was a little girl. My best friend and I still reference the name all the time. I think we saw it in 1980's on HBO shorts. Love it

  • <3 I remember watching this on "The Cosmic Eye". :3

  • i remember having this on VHS when i was a kid, and and loved this cartoon and there was another right after i think it was called dig or dug it was about a kid and a rock...i forget but this video brought back some old memories hahaha thank you for posting this

  • @Fr0st85 It was called Dig, and its IMDB entry can be found under "Dig (1972)". I remember seeing the VHS with the above video and Dig on it many years ago as a kid (it was borrowed from the library), but I can't for the life of me remember what the VHS was called.

  • I remember FINALLY finding this to buy on DVD when no one I knew had a DVD player. I bought the DVD to make sure it really was available and then went to buy one of those first expensive DVD players, so this is the reason I bought my first DVD player! I saw it first on PBS years ago and thought I'd never see it again! I LOVE it!

  • Saw this short on HBO's short and special intermission segments!

  • Wow. Can't believe this is here! I remember seeing this when I was probably nine or ten years old. Brilliant! Thank you for uploading!

  • I saw this beautiful film in 1973 (I think) just before Woody Allen's "Love and Death" at the Paris Theater in Manhattan. I am so grateful that it's been posted. The Hubleys were geniuses and I will never forget their work.

  • The Hubley creativity lives on in Emily's animation and Georgia's music.

  • @mcover1 I had heard about Emily's career but not Georgia's. Thanks very much for telling me. I'll look for them both online.

    You're an animator yourself?

  • why would anyone dislike this?

  • when georgie said "throw it in the garbage" at 4:58 she sounded like a gremlin

  • 4:58: THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE!!!!!

  • This wonderful piece had a sequel with the same girls in it, but I can't remember the name of it.

  • Maybe "Windy Day (1968)"?

  • I'm not sure when it came out, but the girls sounded a bit older, so I don't know if it was Windy Day or not. Emily, especially was more articulate when she spoke, but it was a bit too long ago for me to remember. I appreciate your reply, though.

  • omg im 33 yrs old and i remember this video when i was little i still say throw it in the garbage lol! and my kids have no idea i must show them this video classic what a classic!

  • its so funny, but an really old video! I like when the little girl said that "when you get very old, and your parents die, you get married!"

  • My little brother and I used to sit around and wait for it to come on HBO too. How about that!

  • Y0U G0T A C0CKAB0ODY 0N Y0UR N0SE!!!

  • I remember watching this on a 16 mm projecter eons ago. It was in the film library at the school where my dad taught. As others point point out here, it is remarkable how true to life it is. The speech patterns, the temperaments, the body language, the themes are exactly the same as those of my two nieces at that age. The animation is like a vivid dream, though not as psychedelic as Hubley's "Windy Day."

  • I love this short. I saw it years ago and I swear someone must've been watching my girls when this was conceived. It depicts them exactly. It brings such wonderful memories. Thanks for uploading.

  • I saw this years ago and loved it! Yep, me and my little sister. She was so cute! Thanks for putting it on YouTube! You did an excellent job! Renojet.

  • That was fantastic!! I am so glad for YouTube. My brother and I used to hope and pray for it to come on HBO when we were little, cuz there was not such thing as TIVO!

  • wow i used to watch this all the time as a child.. georgia & emily remind me so much of my sister & i, thanks for putting it on youtube!

  • OMG i remember this.. i was about 10 years old and it use to come on hbo. thnks for possting it

  • If you enjoyed this, you'll enjoy Nick Park's Oscar-winning "Creature Comforts" short and the "Crank Yankers" series, both of which employ candid/unrehearsed audio recordings.

  • thank you thank you! I don't remember what we had this taped with but I'm pretty sure it was a christmas cartoons tape cause this brings back happy memories of christmas time. This made my day!

  • thank you for putting this up! i love this short so much. i remember seeing it on hbo when i was a teenager and i vhs taped it but it is long gone now. thank you again. i love it!

  • I remember my parents taped this for me on hbo also I loved it and when I found it on here I was amazed to see when it was made I thought it was made in the 8o's it's a classic

  • lol, this is pretty much the cutest thing ever.

  • "Don' kiss me! Don' KISS meee!...."

This is a lovely film. I just can't figure out how the Hubleys would have gone through the process of choosing WHICH of their kid's conversations to use. They must hve recorded tons of this stuff.

  • this is my favorite! my mom is the voice of the older girl

  • Your mom is Emily Hubley? Wow! Your grandparents made such masterpiece animations. I love their videos as child. Now I have kids of my own and they love to quote from this animation short, Cockaboody.

  • Same here, my 4 year old keeps shouting " throw it in the garbage" just like Georgia. The most charming film ever.

    Yo la Tengo Rock also!

  • That's one of their favorite lines too...and "there's a cockaboody in your nose".

  • It's cool that your kid likes this. How often do 4-year-olds get to see and hear a film that's about them? I mean REALLY about them. As opposed to imitations of them.

    Not often.

  • will you ask her what other ones they did that were similar? my sister and i remember another one where the girls were playing and i can't find it. I know it's not Moonbird...any ideas?

  • You probably saw "Windy Day". It also features the voices of Emily & Georgia. I found a copy & have just uploaded it. Thanks for asking, I had not seen it before.

  • Thank you so much!! That brought tears to my eyes.

  • "The bear eats up it's mouth and then it's dead, but if it eats up it's eyes it gets alive..."

    "Is a Cockaboody!"

  • I have this on 16mm film. Now I don't have to get all that gear out just to watch it.

    Thanks!

  • etheric. gorgeous. art.

  • This brought back so many memories. My brother and I would watch this all the time on HBO. Thanks!

  • Oh THANK you. I've been looking for this little film for years. I have such fond memories of this from growing up. I love the Hubley films so much.

  • My father taped this once off tv in the 80s and I would watch it all the time. Great memories! Thanks for posting

  • This one is a classic!!

  • Her voice at 4:58 is HILARIOUS! hahaha

  • Holy crap this is wonderful. I particularly like the cat coming out of the youngest when she screams @ her sister (kind of reminds me of my son when he wants food >.< )

  • I watched this so many times as child. Thanks for the post. It really brings back memories.

  • I've been looking into getting the Best of Hubley animation DVD. Do you have "Of Men and Demons?" They really were very innovative in the way of animated filmmaking.

  • Isn't one of their early shorts called Little Boy Lost or something like that- about a little boy who runs away from home?

  • Nothing like that shows on their filmography. However, actress Season Hubley (no relation) stars in a 1985 "Twilight Zone" segment called "Little Boy Lost"

  • Hmm,no that wasn't it,thanks though! I read a book of the history of animation years ago, they were mentioned with some reverence and there was a cell pictured from one of their shorts which really intrigued me,I think they won an award for it,or it gained them some attention. Seems like it was about a boy who ran away from home. Ah well, thanks again.

  • "Moonbird" is already posted by Nora721. It should show up in the Related Videos next to this column.

Also notice the "Yo La Tengo" videos, Georgia Hubley is the Drummer/Vocalist.

  • Going out on a limb.... Do you have "Monkeys Fish the Moon"? It also aired on cable/HBO in the early 80s.

  • Unfortunately I don't. But now you've got me looking, I would like to see it. Apparently, some elementary schools have VHS copies. So maybe it will turn up.

  • Finally, 2 years after your request, I found "Monkeys Fish the Moon"!

  • I'm Kickbuck's brother and I echo his response and share in his enthusiasm! Thanks!

  • This was aired on HBO when I was a little kid and I loved it; was always looking forward to it coming on again. Thanks for posting this - now that I have kids of my own, this takes on a whole new significance.

  • Yes I do remember this on HBO Shorts. They were short cartoons right before the upcoming movie started. Sometimes they should music videos. Thanks for the one who posted this.
