  • what does "A gift of a Thistle" mean?

  • @alceveloce in the movie Braveheart the young Murron gives young William Wallace a flower (Thistle) before he leaves with his Uncle Argyle for over 20 years. William kept the flower with him always until his death. The thistle is a symbol of nobility of character.

  • Edward Longshanks disliked this

  • There will always be a need for heroes. long live the spirit of brave men and strong women. todays world needs heroes, be one!

  • Imma play the pipes and get girls...

  • Man, I bawl my eyes out every single time I watch this movie.

This music is simply heavenly. I'm already tearing up.

  • The most beautiful piece of music ever. Really makes the film brilliant.

  • That melody just cuts through my little heart! I'm almost crying!

    Well done James Horner!

Braveheart is such a great movie

  • what kind of flute is that?!

  • @serensnipe nevermind, :P its a Irish/Scottish tin whistle lol.

  • nevermind, :P its a Irish/Scottish tin whistle lol.

  • nevermind, :P its a Irish/Scottish tin whistle lol.

  • nevermind, :P its a Irish/Scottish tin whistle lol.

  • nevermind, :P its a Irish/Scottish tin whistle lol.

  • @serensnipe it's the famous celtic bagpipes..

  • @BestBuddy16 The second instrument was, yes. =]

  • @BestBuddy16 It's actually an Irish tin whistle.

  • @BestBuddy16 At the start it's actually an Irish tin whistle. Then bagpipes.

  • @winterstormofficial thx a lot winter for the useful info :D

  • @BestBuddy16 It isn't a tin whistle. Actually, it is an irish flute.

    Then, an irish uilleann pipe.

  • @winterstormofficial the start of the braveheart song is an irish trad flute and then uillean pipes

  • @winterstormofficial bagpipes lol u gotta be english lol

  • @winterstormofficial

To be more specific, those are Uileann pipes. :D

  • @serensnipe

The flute is actually a "low whistle" (that's really all it's called). Thought to be created by a piper, it's a variation on the famous "tin" or "Irish" whistle; it's longer than a tin whistle with further spaced holes and is played with something called the "piper's grip" meaning with the knuckles of the fingers and not the pads. The second instrument is actual called a Ulian pipe. It's a bag pipe, but different than the Scottish pipes because it is played without a chanter.

  • @fenriskyoru And a chanter is the part that in Scottish pipes the player blows in to a reed and fingers the notes. The Ulian is powered with a bellows (the player doesn't blow at all).

  • @serensnipe It's a low D penny whistle or tin whistle, and the pipes after are the Irish Uilleann pipes

  • @serensnipe

    Tin whistle i believe.

  • amazing =)

  • the instrument at 0.41 is a bulgarian tradition intrument called "gayda".it it similar to tha bag pipes, but it is only one pipe,it is made from the stomak of a sheep, and it is several times more melodical than tha bag pipe,i hope it was usefull to you all :)

  • @daredevilnV its actualy uilleane bagpipes at 0.41 not the practice chanter

  • william walace is the greatest warrior ever

  • This song is amazing, especially to that scene wwhere Murron gives him the thistle. Never fails to make me blub!!

  • James Horner is a musical genius, what instrument is it that starts at .41? I dont think its the bagpipes although it is similar.

  • Hi, its called a Chanter. (not sure if thats spelt correctly!) Its similar to a recorder and is generally used as a training tool before moving on to the Bag Pipes.

  • @bigmac826 -yeh that is spelt correctly but its not a chanter thats being used in this piece. At the start and end is a Celtic low whistle and in the middle are bellow pipes (which do sound quite like the chanter).

  • This music takes me out of this universe for a few while. Magical, really magical.

  • Soo beautiful, reminds me of the god Days wich i was sharing with my Ex. Love you Melanie trough the Oceans of Time

  • GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!

  • MON THE SCOTLAND!!!!

    SCOTLAND AND PROUD!! SCOTTISH FOREVER!!

I don't insult other countries and I would never dream of it!!

But scotland is and shall remain the most beutiful country in the world!

  • I think so. Its up their with America before the land was invaded by war pigs.

  • That's what I like to hear :D

  • It's been a few years now since I first heard this song and my God I still hold firmly on the position that this is the best piece of music I have ever heard. I've heard many beautiful soundtracks but nothing like this. I used to listen to it for hours at a time.

  • This makes me proud tae be scottish!!!

  • Speechless.

  • This makes me wanna kill the engish!

  • Same here, man, same here. Dam I love the scots, the irish, and the celts. They have such beauty in everything, in all aspect of there being, their country and people.

  • sometimes! we fight amongst our selves a lot! in saying that though, i don't know a more patriotic country and we owe a lot of that to our past!

  • the celts are us scots and the irish

  • Yep.

  • Don't forget the Welsh!

    They're Celts, too....

My boyfriend recorded him playing this on his guitar and the keys in the background and then sent it to me.

It was the most beautiful gift I'd ever recieved.

  • You do know that this is a very biased film which isnt historically accurate?. i love this film but please many of the events in this film did not happen, for example the king allowing lords to rape scotish women when they are married didnt happen.

And during this time peroid scottish people didnt wear kilts.

  • true, true...the irish were the first to wear kilts.

  • Most people are aware of this, you don't have to tell the Scots its not 100% accurate. We know our history though, and the film isn't right in parts but it highlights our patriotism and how much we lost.

  • im sorry to say say ur well wrong... it was called pre-minocta (or there abouts) lol..

it's genuinly true... Gretna green was a place for couples to wed in secrecy... to prevent this from happening... the english couldnt defeat us... so they wanted to breed us out.. its in the history books.. its a trait of mankind all over the world... breeding culture out!!!

  • Hahaha!

  • I just lost my girlfriend.

This song is just as sad...

    A thistle in my heart...

  • genial!
