  • Oh Yeash. Love me some Dream Theater!

  • some of Petrucci on your fingers... ;-)

  • how much does that thing weight?

  • @babinm a ton. one of the reasons I sold it. a head + cab is much more easy to manage.

  • Amazing amp!

  • I always get sad when I see your strap. I had the same one on my bass, and the cheap plastic thing on the strap broke and send my bass to the concrete.

  • @okamasphere really? That sucks. I sold this strap when I sold the guitar. My tokai uses a couch strap and my JP6 has a Levis strap. Both of those are all metal/leather

  • The dirty soud is only from amp or you use overs or booster in this chanel???

    Great sound ;)

  • @cehdmoy I think I used a fulltone OCD for a boost at some point in the video. The amp really isn't built or voiced to do really heavy stuff.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Thanks

  • excellent demo. good job!

  • nice overdrive!

  • Very Very cool sound. When you started you had a very King's X sort of vibe. I have been looking at this amps as well as others and was wanting to know how hard the drive ould be pushed and you did a get demo of that. Thank you. By the way what kind of egnater do you have in the closet?

  • @bikerpastor71 that's the amp. it was the 2x12 combo amp.

  • What were your settings on the lead channel please?

  • you use nova system..?

  • @MrAmaj sometimes

  • what kind of pickups did you put in you carvin ?

  • @flmcon bareknuckle nailbomb bridge (alnico V version) and stock neck pickup from my tokai.

  • you have some sick tone there.. that clean sound is fantastic... and the drive in your face punch but very well defined... loved it, I'll be sure to get this amp as soon as I can... and the OCD is fantastic as well, I ordered it a couple of weeks ago and still hasn't got here, I live in Mexico so it will surely take a while before it gets here =S

  • great demo ...do u know if the efx loop is series or parallel ?

  • @mrkyt77 series.

  • Im 98% sure im gonna buy this amp.. Just tried it, for a second time, at Gc, this time through a mesa 2x12 instead of the egnater cab. Mesa made a big difference. Anyways, what are some good preamp tubes you would recommend switching to in this amp, seeing i hear the stock ones are junk, and switching them makes a huge difference. Im thinking about JJ's, but id like your opinion!! Power tubes im not concerned about right now, once i purchase it i'll be able to tell more on what i want. Thanks!

  • @jesusmyking1988 JJ's = Junk Junk! You'd have to buy a dozen JJ's to find one or two good ones. Try the ruby HG preamp tubes first. I like them A LOT more. laura has them. google her website called valvequeen. service is top notch and shipping is fast and she tests all the preamp tubes and will burn in and then match up sets of power tubes when you get to upgrading those (which I'd suggest at minimum adding a 2nd set of EL34's in leu of the 6L6's)

  • @FastRedPonyCar Junk junk, haha... Ive always just heard people rav about them.. this will be my first tube amp.. When I was playing it I found myself leaning towards the el34's alot more, so if i find i just go full on el'34s, i'll yank the 6l6's out and replace them. So i can run a quad of el34's then??

  • @jesusmyking1988 people who don't know much about tubes rave about them. Those who are serious usually go after the NOS tubes like the RCA's, Mullards and Bugle boy preamp tubes off ebay but those START at 50 bucks each and only go up...

the Ruby HG's are the best (in my opinion) current production tubes that when using high gain, the differences from them and my NOS tubes is very hard to distinguish

you also have to mod the JCA to use EL34's. I've put the 6L6's back in mine as 34's r unsafe

  • That combination of PUs. is just great!!

I have a ZW Custom LP with 2 Nailbombs, but you just gave me a great Idea.

Clean tones with NB are bad.

    Thanks.

The video sound is superb also.

  • Hi there dude. Great sound!

Did your amp came with the Svetlana's 6550?

    New ones come with 2 6L6 + 2 EL34.

Did you perform any mod ?

Are you using other effects? I see your pedalboard around.

Is that Tokai PU a Gotoh PAF? Tokai LS150 is the guitar, thoug.

    Thanks.

  • @mdparra no the amp came with EL34's and 6L6's. I swapped all 4 of those for a quartet of the ruby KT88's and simply biased each pair to the voltage specified for 6550's in the amp's owners manual.

I used a fulltone OCD at some point in the video and yeah the neck pickup of the blue carvin is the gotoh paf that came with my tokai.

  • @Tobibomber had an OCD in the video but at 5 minute mark I don't think it was on.

  • nice clean sound !B

  • superbe ampli, quel beau son, je crois je vais l'acheter, merçi pour votre

    demo

  • is renegade 212 better than tourmaster 4212? i cant decide between this two amps :(((

  • @LittleSecret933 most everyone online that has played both (including myself) believe that the renegade has a lot more "mojo" if you will, than the tourmaster.

  • @FastRedPonyCar i have 2 agreee as well! i own the renegade now for a few a months, and the tourmaster just didnt compare but i gotta say that sometimes maybe its just my old ass ears, but the disttortion sometimes all gained up i dont like. i am thinking of eeping the gain in the drive channel at around 3 o clock and adding a okko diablo distortion boost or something similiar lie the ocd.

  • Very nice sound and good playing. Could you share please - is the Carvin DC135 alder or mahogany?

  • @jjensson maple neck and alder wings

  • @FastRedPonyCar

Thanks! Didn't realize it's neck through.

  • @jjensson yeah if I had it to do all over again, I'd have gotten a mahogany neck. the maple neck doesn't give quite enough girth to the sound. The nailbomb has a lot of lower midrange grunt to it and helped balance out the sound but there's still a lack of sparkle to the sound that the tokai just lavishes onto it's sound. I doubt I'll ever be 100% happy with the sound of this guitar. The playability though is easily on par with jackson USA so no complaints there.

  • @FastRedPonyCar

Yeah, Carvin are known to produce good stuff.

I'm thinking about the Nailbomb (your video is one of the best sounding samples out there), but i'm not quite shure yet. Must admit that i didn't like the clean sound of the NB. Do you play 009 or 010 strings? How good you think is the NB for slightly dirty stuff for fusion leads?

  • @jjensson NB would be good for fusion. Their fatter lower mids really help the instrument sing.

I use 11's on my guitars.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Man I feel exactly the same way about my maple neck carvin. I hope a pickup change would solve the problem...

  • hey... Where did you get that guitar? It's perfect for all my standards...

  • @TheDataMage carvin.com

  • How does this amp handle cleans compared to the Rebel 30?

  • You....know.....how....to.....record.......a ....video!! This sounds damn good to my ears!! But, are you concerned about the reliability of the little plastic fan in the Egnater?

  • @JSustain haha thanks man. no the fan reliability is not a concern. They usually have thousands upon thousands of hours of use before they start to burn out bearings. At that point, they'll be whining and is a tell tale sign. The biggest issue as far as that fan goes is it's noise. It's noticable so if you're recording something quiet, it may be heard. Luckly higher quality fans with silent technology are only about 12 bucks from newegg and it's easy to replace.

  • I'm planning on upgrading the power tubes in my Renegade very soon. I'm going with Winged C 6550s and Ruby 6L6s. As far as I know the Renegade can't run KT88's. However, if it can, I will totally put in KT88s. Any idea if it can?

  • @Unskathed123 I ran a full quartet of 88's in mine for months. no issues.

  • @FastRedPonyCar

Did it sound good with KT88's? They're more expensive than 6550s, so are they totally worth it?

  • @Unskathed123 i think it sounds good but it's a different sound from the 6L6's or 34's. some may or may not like the 88's. they're tighter and have a more percussive attack on the notes and are just bigger and cleaner overall sounding.

  • @Unskathed123 The only REAL issue is that larger strings can bind and pinch in the nut and using the tremolo will take it way out of tune.

Also, you may have to increase neck resistance via a truss rod adjustment as heavier strings will want to pull the neck harder resulting in a hair more concave bow.

KT88's are fine in the amp as long as the bias is set to where bruce specifies it should be set in the owners manual.

  • HOOOLY DIIIIVER

  • I swear to god, you are my gear twin! I am looking at this amp, and I have the exact same guitar with the same bridge pickup. What are the body woods are on that guitar, and what is the string gauge?

  • @DarkJinx257 hah! Well... good taste in tone! Right now, the JP has a motor city afwayu bridge pickup and air norton neck pickup. Basswood body I believe and I decided to stick with the stock EB slinky 10 gauge strings that come with the guitar so I wouldn't have to fool with re-slotting the nut. The rest of my guitars use DR brand 11 gauge strings and my blue carvin sometimes will have D'Addario EXL148's for heavy drop tuning.

  • @FastRedPonyCar What sort of problems will you hear if you use a too large a string gauge? W/O re-slotting the nut that is. I had put some GHS 11's on my USA Fender Strat. It doesn't seem like any problems? What should I look for?

I put GHS David Gilmour Signature set 10.5 just to see what they sound like on my Gibson LP.

  • @DarkJinx257 i forgot I was using the carvin in this vid. It's all maple with a bareknuckle nailbomb bridge and tokai neck pickup.

  • question: Svetlana 6550 or kt 88?

  • @friedman85 the SED KT88's are the best in my opinion. Laura at valvequeen dot coom sells them. They're expensive but they're very very good. I think the ruby's are a good compromise of price and sound. She's tried all of them in high gain amps and can give you a much better comparsion of all the various 88's and 6550s.

  • Comment removed

  • at 4:25 was that all amp or any pedals??? i want this amp but i want the head version

  • @thor111988 "OCD off." No boost

  • hello why did you change the tubes?

  • @friedman85 cheap tubes = cheap tone.

  • I had never considered tuning as low as B until I saw this video.

nice tone on both channels man.

  • What does this head sound like through a Marshall 412 1960a slant cab? Better or worst?

  • hey man i seen that you have a ocd overdrive pedal. i just bought the head version of this amp and was wandering how that od pedal does with the amp for dream theatre like leads. there are so many od pedals out and i heard the ocd is one of the best. just kinda want your oppinion bro and great playing btw!

  • @capable1230 OCD is a good pedal. very clean and transparent but I sold mine after playing a friend's JHS Klon Klone. Mine is being built now. I'm using a hardwire CM2 overdrive as a boost at the moment and I like it just as much as the OCD and it was half the cost. The JHS is twice the price of the OCD though. I think the OCD functions best as a stand alone overdrive rather than a boost. It works as a boost just fine but i think other pedals boost better.

  • It's got a bit of a Rockerverb flavour to it :)

  • Great egnater videos! You should playlist all your vids by subject to make them easier to browse. Because of your videos I went to GC, played through one, and bought it. I love it. It does not sound bad with stock tubes, but when I get the money I will definitely be trying some of your suggestions.

  • Hey, very informative video, and awesome playing. The only thing I think could be improved is your voice's volume... I had to keep tweaking the volume to hear you.

  • @rcteigao yeah I have a new camera now that does a much better job with my commentary

  • what kind of pots are you using in that beast!? 500k?

  • @GuitarRocks23455 yep. 500k is the only way for hot humbuckers. Audio taper too. I think this one has a CTS branded one.

  • from what i've demo'd the renegade is their best sounding amp..i have the separate head and a 4x12 cab and also a 1x12 cab for smaller live rooms/limited space situations......kind of digging the 6550's in there.....fat

  • Hey dude, great playing!

It seems like you're getting a good amount of gain out of that amp. Do you think that the Renegade has enough gain on tap to get a Dream Theater-ish tone?

  • @SLonergan59 absolutely! I love DT and this handles it quite well.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Perfect! Looks like I'm sticking with Egnater after all! I have a Rebel 20 atm...I just need something with separate channels. Thank you for the quick response!

  • @SLonergan59 egnater ecstasis rules

  • To FastRedPonyCar,I really enjoyed your review/demo on the Egnater Renagade 212,it was very informative. i suggested the V3 because it has a lot of versatility. but,I too own a Renagade 212 and I'm quite satisfied with (although I really don't do a lot hard distortion,I more dof a Soul Man,really clean stuff). Again, thanks for the outstanding demo. I wish most people were as informed as you.

  • @sosmooth7 the clean channel on the amp with a quartet of KT88's is absolutely huge sounding! so big and clean.

  • Price wise this amp can"t be beat, unless you're going with a Carvin V3. Sound wise, this ampm is incredible.I can get any sound that I want from sparkling cleans to amazing crunch, the distortion is also very good. Take the time dout to demo this amp for yourself. I've A/B'd to other amps and its meets and surpasses them in sound quality. Make sure to use the foot switch,it'll open up ton of tonald characteristics. For the money you can't walk into a store and get a better amp.

  • @sosmooth7 I used to own a V3 and it has a lot of options but the renegade has a much better core tone.

  • Great demo. You've had this amp for a while now - how's it holding up? I had bad luck with the Rebel-30. Three different amps, with three different problems, so I swore off Egnater after I returned the third one. But this demo reminds me how much I liked its voice ... so I am reconsidering my self-imposed ban.

  • @doctornerve it's holding up well. It and my jet city amp are my 2 gigging amps. I think the nitro and titan are better amps overall but the JCA and renegade work better for me as stage amps as far as their voicing goes and the fact that they don't have to be ripping loud to sound their best.

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome review bro. I'm still deciding what my next combo amp will be. It's either a H&K switchblade, Bogner Alchemist(212) or this one!!! I haven't been able to try out that amp. But did the Svetlana (6550-tubes) make a HUGE difference on the lead channel? Thanks...

  • @edskate787 switchblade is ok but only if you buy used for around 700 bucks or so... otherwise I'd pass. The alchemist is sick but a very different voice than the renegade. our singer has one and it sounds great with the renegade together.

  • hey great review, this amp sounds phenomenal in my opinion. I was wondering (since your playing in drop tuning) if the amp still has a real heavy overall tone for standard E tuning as well. For like metallica and such. All thats stopping me from buying it is my concern for the distortion. if you could please respond bac that would be great. Thanks

  • @RyanzGuitarz it does have a surprising amount of gain to it and I think it does the hot rodded marshall thing well. A good overdrive pedal though really helps take it that one extra bit further as it will tighten everything up and add more saturation.

Also, upgrading to better preamp tubes in the amp really helps.

  • Hey I just picked up an egg, reneg. at it rocks . I have a L.P with 57 pickups in it.. Can you suggest some cool clean settings along with some great red channel settings. I have the 65 watt or the 18 watt settings on both channels as well as the tight , deep , bright and normal. I love the sound you get. I also have a ocd running in front of the amp along with a keely blues driver. any help full setting you would use would be GREATLY appriciated bro, thanks! Great style of playing as well !!

  • @surefire1333 check the settings on my recent video of the clean channel wet/dry setup

also change out the preamp tubes. the stock ones are terrible. I've got a few old RCA black plate 12AX7's in it but the Ruby AC7's would do really well. Anything but JJ's really.

  • Owesome !

i want you to try the Laney LC-30 i think you will like it ..

  • got to try this amp at guitar center and fell in love with it. It has a great high gain channel, strong powerful tone . great for Metal

  • Do you know how it would work with 2x12 celestion vintage 30?

  • @iggle84 it sounds good with everything I've plugged it into so far.

  • How do you like the quality of the Carvin guitars? I just saw your from Montgomery,Al. The Wife and I just moved here to Dothan,Al. from Marianna,Fl.

  • @hawg427 they're excellent guitars for the money. Especially if you buy them used. They all play really well and sound good also. If you ever feel like a road trip up to the gump, let me know and you can try them out.

  • Good Lord! I can't get Renegades in Guitar Center to sound anywhere NEAR this good! The clean channels sound good but I can't seem get get rid of this stuffy frequency in the mids - of which there is none in the vid. Its tight and clear but still very saturated. Any tone tips here?

  • @gtralien put better preamp tubes in the amp. That made a noticeable difference.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Good to know. I had a Carvin that had the same problem - didn't sound that great with the stock tubes, sounded amazing with JJ's in the preamp section.

What are you using for pre tubes here?

  • @gtralien JJ's are extremely hit or miss when it comes to sound quality (usually miss) I've got 2 RCA blackplate 12AX7's, 2 old Mullard 12AX7's and a couple of Ruby AC7 12AX7's in the amp. The RCA's are absolutely amazing but expensive. The AC7's are the best current production preamp tubes on the market in my opinion. I've tried a few of literally every type available and the AC7's produce the most consistent GOOD tone.

  • @FastRedPonyCar I've been looking over Google trying to find these Ruby AC7 12AX7's and I can't seem to locate them. Where can I buy/order them from?

  • @gtralien email a friend of mine. she sells them. Very trustworthy. miller411 [at] columbus [dot] rr [dot] com

  • Are you happy with the performance of the speakers in the cab for the heavey gain or would you consider a transplant?

  • the stock speakers sound great. I had them mic'd up for my brown sound demo of the amp. I'm just partial to the voice of the K100 and scumback so those are in the combo at the moment. I may do some more experimenting though but they all sound fantastic. I'd be happy with any of them.

  • I really like the Stream of Consciousness part, ofcourse Holy Diver was also awesome. :-)

  • Beautiful sound as always. Really makes me self counscious about bringing my Marshall stack to gigs, haha :P .

Can you tell me what you use to get your initial delay sound? It's killer. Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it.

  • digitech hardwire. fantastic line up of pedals!

my splawn half stack stays at home for now.

  • Thanks for replying. I've been looking at a few delay stompboxes recently. I'll have to check those out.

  • The specs show EL34/6L6. Is this one modded for 6550's?

  • I biased it for 6550's on the EL34 side. It doesn't require modding for this. the owner manual tells you what to set the bias at depending on what type tube you want to use.

  • why is your video so choppy? it looks like HD, but it's choppy as hell. why is that?

  • thank you this is the best demo ive seen of this amp so far. not even this but reviews in general, people crank the gain and play blues and it doesnt sound like theyve done anything. thank you for liking heavier music and using high gain like its supposed to be used haha. when you do a standard tuning demo, could you do some opeth-ish kind of stuff with this amp using no other methods of distortion but the amp itself? im seriously considering getting one of these and i dont like pedals lol

  • sorry for the second comment, but in addition to opethy stuff, could you do just some other metal type stuff? no chugga chuggas pls lol thanks

  • I love opeth but never learned any of their music. I think if you're just going to be using the amp at home for that type of music, the amp may not have QUITE the amount of saturation you're after. Now.. on stage, it would be better because you don't need a super saturated sound to pull off heavy music.

A good boost pedal though really pushes the amp into that realm of metal so if you dont like OD pedals, it may not be the amp you're after. I'll do more demos though.

  • The cleaner tones at the beginning reminded me of Joe Bonamassa. Very nice demo as usual.

  • Very "Sweet" tones!

  • can u do a demo with the amp, with the jp6 standard tunning please..! sounds great..

  • yeah I'm planning on doing some with it and the tokai as well.

  • Sweet sounds Drew!

  • thank you sir. I do believe this was way beyond what bruce intended for this amp to do!
