I'm surprised I found this song on YouTube. I remember hearing it at a junior high school dance shortly after it came out. This is the first time I heard this song since 1959.
I remember the day they died. I was in grade 7, Ritchie Valens was my favourite performer at the time, and I just couldn't believe my cousin when he gave me the bad news. But, their music will always live on.
Tom Dee wrote the original which was good but i especially love this version because he knew the three legends personally and when he heard that his three very good friends were gone he was hit hard emotionally. You can hear the pain in his voice while singing and that gives you a peek into his heart....PASSION!!! 4 legends have the honor of playing for our Maker....and he also has the honor of hearing them...
You can hear Eddie's voice crackle from holding back tears...beautiful song and I am happy he was able to get this song out to the public before he passed away as well.
you made a comment on another clip of mine about no one caring about or remembering the "non-famous" people involved like Roger Peterson who was the pilot on that stormy night. in this case that is probably a good thing as its quite possible, even though it was not his fault, that he'd be remembered as the man responsible for the death of "Rock n Roll."
I rather not be remembered at all than have people say yeah he's the one that crashed their plane and killed them.
@hot318 As you said he had no fault , and as big stars as they were in the face of death all of them were equal , Roger was young as well why not remember him ? What if the pilot would have been your father , what then ? "i will never remember my father because he "killed" 3 rock n' roll stars ?" maybe you have 1 million dollars and i don't have anything , but in front of god all , and i really mean all of us are the same. So , Rest in Peace : Ritchie Valens , Buddy Holly , Big Boper and Roger.
Okay, so.........you guys are gonna hate me for this, but who is "Big Bopper?" I know who Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly are, but I've never heard of Big Bopper.

You just had to break my heart didn't you? I'm sorta glad you did. What a wonderful video to honor 3 of the best! I'm just sorry that the younger generations didn't know these men as we did. I've been to Clear Lake, Iowa. It's not a fun thing to do, but it helps with the healing process. Thanks again, and keep in touch!
It's great to see the young people digging and commenting on the musical greatness of the 3 Stars. However, please do not rely on the hollywood movie versions for real accuracy of what happened on the Winter Dance Party. The true story is more interesting! The 3 were true musical revolutionists and are responsible ( along with the Memphis Sun crew of sam phillips and a nod to Chess Records) for today's music. It can all be traced back to that epoch. Buddy was 1st to write/produce his own music.
Very true. I highly recommend the book "The Day the Music Died" by Larry Lehmer. He takes the reader through every stop on what became "the tour from hell". Despite the horrible traveling conditions, lack of sleep etc., those on the tour gave their all each and every time. They also mingled with the fans and showed their appreciation.
Sounds strange, but some were hoping this tragedy might put an end to rock n' roll. Were they ever wrong!
I don't cry easily, but the La Bamba film and the Arena documentary on Eddie Cochran both reduce me to tears. All 4 were killed due to other people's negligence. Maybe if they'd lived, we may not have had to endure so much rubbish in the music world since.

'SteelClaw' this song is called "3 stars", a great song by Eddie Cochran. Thanks for uploading, R.I.P Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper and Eddie Cochran - My all time 4 favourite singers along with all the other great 50's stars!
This is a powerful song. The bits with the good memories of these guys makes me smile, even though it's such a sad song. It's a good balance between the fact that this is such an awful thing to have happened, and that the best way to pay tribute is to remember. Very nice.
He was on that tour with them and did a coin toss for the plane they were on, losing to Ritchie. So sad. Also very sad that he died just a year later at 21.
Well Done! tahnks for that masterpeice! I am 34 but this will be the video I show to teach them of these early American Rock revolutionaries... Thanks
The singer is Eddie Cochran, another Rock 'n' Roll legend who left us too soon. Eddie died just one year after Buddy, Ritchie, and J.P. in a car crash in England. He was just 21.
Ironically, this song, which was a tribute to the three (Eddie was close friends with Buddy and Ritchie) was released posthumously.
You can hear Eddie's voice break during the parts about Ritchie and Buddy.
Richard Valenzuela, great mexican-american that always knew his origin and wanted to show it singing in spanish a traditional mexican song the huapango from veracruz "la bamba" he taught us to be proud about our roots and never forget it.
These days people might ask, where where you when 9-11 happened, or where were you when President Obama was sworn in. Back then it was more along the lines of where were you the day President Kennedy was killed and where were you the day the Music died.

now my mother is up there with Ritchie, Buddy and Big Bopper rockin and rollin 24hrs a day.
happy birthday mum, miss ya, say hello to Ritchie, Buddy and JP Richardson.
I, too, know of a female sung version but I can't remember who sang it. I was born not long after the tragedy so don't remember it but you are not alone in having heard a woman's version.
The far better version! Makes me cry every time I hear it. Eddie sings it with his heart, his deepest feelings...R.I.P. Buddy, Ritchie, JP...and Eddie!
Wow!!!What a beautiful song. It made me cry. What a genuine tribute and a great song and interpresentation. Thanks for posting it. Can you tell me who wrote this song and sings it?
Disk Jockey Tommy dee wrote this actually, not Eddie, he's got a video on herer of him singing as well, type in Tommy Dee Three Stars and it should come up.
eddies is better and the most commonly known, and upon further research looks like Tommy Dee liked Eddies version more than his own, kinda like the beatles congratulating Joe Cocker for doing "A Little Help from My Friends" in a way that they never could and thought would not work.
that is why i chose Eddie's "three stars" also in the credits you see i wrote "recorded by" not "written by" Eddie C
thats very nice. I am british but what a tragedy it was for all music when these men died. i didnt realise RV was only 17. One wonders what their mucic would have developed like if they had lived. Well done.
yeah its sad that they all died 49 years ago on sunday just gone (3rd feb 08), the thing is Eddie sings about being called a kid and Ricthie being only 17 when he died, but Eddie also died young in hospital after a car crash when he was only 21. Only the good die young.
absolutely. Eddie died in Chippenham in Wiltshire in England as you know. I live in Salisbury in the same county. Buddy Holly played in Salisbury in about 1957. Its amazing to think that such big stars as that played so far away from home in such little places like Salisbury.

its "three stars" by Eddie Cochrane 1959.
not sure if Eddie had a Co-writer or if he wrote it him self.
hot318 3 years ago
Disk Jockey Tommy dee wrote this actually, not Eddie, he's got a video on herer of him singing as well, type in Tommy Dee Three Stars and it should come up.
kylecrazyford 3 years ago
eddies is better and the most commonly known, and upon further research looks like Tommy Dee liked Eddies version more than his own, kinda like the beatles congratulating Joe Cocker for doing "A Little Help from My Friends" in a way that they never could and thought would not work.
that is why i chose Eddie's "three stars" also in the credits you see i wrote "recorded by" not "written by" Eddie C

thats very nice.

Only the good die young.
hot318 4 years ago
absolutely. Eddie died in Chippenham in Wiltshire in England as you know. I live in Salisbury in the same county. Buddy Holly played in Salisbury in about 1957. Its amazing to think that such big stars as that played so far away from home in such little places like Salisbury.

ya i wonder wat they would have did with music i no they would have done something good
