She is best in what she does.... i personally dont want to hear any other type of songs from her.....

If the scoring system was cumulative scoring system, it would make sense for her to try different genres. Even if you miss one or two songs, you could survive. But if is not, why would you take a chance? You should always play your strong hand to win. I find her to be very intelligent and focussed girl. If she is playing the system, I won't blame her.

Quite a thoughtful comment ! As much as it would be enjoyable to hear her sing different songs, I am quite thrilled with most (if not all) of her performances to date. Given that she has sound education in music, I think she is a good judge of her abilities, as is her mentor SK, and I might speculate she might be better than quite a lot other contestants in sur/taal/lay in most genres as well. I don't subscribe to favoritism arguments/conspiracy theories and am OK putting my faith in SK (contd.)

and other distinguished judges. Given their experience and time they spend with contestants, they certainly have a better eye/ear for vocal gifts and potential. I also like AbCh, SuDh who are both honest singers and consistent too, RaSx is gifted but somehow doesn't feel sincere to me. I like RuLad and SaJd also, but think are lil unfinished gems yet. Anyways full disclosure in place on my end :) . UD's impactive performances, maturity and humility made me launch into this diatribe :) haha

Personally, I like AbCh a lot as a singer. However, if SK or AG or Z has to engage someone for their next album who would it be? If I look at the market segment for LM/AM songs...when they are alive and still singing what are your chances? I don't see UD as a mainstream artist but rather a niche player. She knows it too.

After reading both Ravy and Parag, what I wish to say here that both UD and KG belong to same genre and represent rural segments and thus have proved that one should not think places of "Monopoly"as far as the question of achieving laurels is concerned. Forget about issue of caste or creed, and just concentrate on their virtues in singing. I think other considerations are immaterial. Urmila and couple of other Non-Marathi participants are really rocking in this season of SAREGAMAPA. Really !!

I am not sure why some people compare the singers with LC. There is a age difference to begin with and secondly singers like Urmila are highly learned and well trained. Let the LC grow up to their 20s and then we will see their performances.

Also no point in comparing with Kartiki, who was nothing "extra ordinaire" or out of this world. Urmila is leagues ahead of KG. Let KG grow up to urmila's age and then we will see where she stands. As of now Urmila seems to be the best of the lot.

it is too early to say anything. However this one is clearly an outstanding performance. Sometimes I don't understand the obsession with a particular genre. Why do we think a singer must sing songs from all genre?

Urmila may or may not turn out as oustanding as Kartiki, however she clearly is luckier in that it looks like she is saved from the moronic comments from the likes of ahonkan who made incredible & incessant casteist comments about Kartiki.

Again no point comparing LC to this season. However, Kartiki was not for sure the best of 5. Let us say hypothetically she was technically better than the other finalists according to the ZM and the honorable judges, what about the SMS? ZM never disclosed that number. Hence before commenting defining the class of morons, I guess you need to get the data.

As far as Urmila, she is technically better than Kartiki and has unique voice - according to one of the likes of ahonkan!

It's too early to compare the two. However I do think both're outstanding.

Kartiki was not just ahead of the rest of LCs (who all were great) but in a different league altogether. My conviction about KG was proved by the support from Khale, Date and Wadkar.

One can do better than associate himself to the likes of ahonkan. It's ok to make stupid comments (e.g. thinking that previously unsung songs can't be judged!! Huh!??) but outright casteist comments ... how can one get away with that?

I am waiting for the next song from UD and as I said I feel that not just because of different voice, but also by musical accuracy, UD is far better than KG - hence I would be happy if she proves me wrong. IMO, she might face some problem with higher notes (typical Lata songs with madhyam shadja). ...cntd

Voting is good to determine popular opinion when all voters have fair/equal access to voting mechanism. Was Kartiki most popular? We will never know since a) zee's lack of transparency b) not viewers could afford SMSs. But based on studio audience she received the most "ONCE MORE"s and clearly was most popular with them.

When it comes to musical excellence, all experts heaped praise on her like no other contestant. IMHO that was because her swar and bhaav were totally in a different league.

cntd..on ur comment on why one has to sing all kinds of songs. Didn't people expect Prathamesh to sing something else than Abhisheki, same w/ Pushkar Lele..others. Is because of the "least resistance" tendency that has percolated in the lives. I am wondering if we define "inability" as the "class" - again not specific to any class/person.

Also this is a competition and not the career show. Compare Ila Arun and Shubha Mudgal - similar voice (may not agree), but different class!!!

Agree @ ur "different class" comment. Beauty/excellence is very subjective & hard to define. But most of us recognize it when we see it.

I liked Pushkar/Prathamesh both because of their individuality and not inspite of it. Same goes w KG or UD. We shouldn't insist a singer must sing all bhaav/sugam/natya/lavni/folk sangeet in order to prove he/she is a good singer. Standard of excellence should not be restricted to a narrow genre nor be applied to all possible genrae.

Replying to both - True, one could be excellent in a genre. But in a competition like this, it has to span across at least across 3-4 genres. Otherwise ZM would have to arrange folk/lavani/natya/bhavgeet/roc­k samraat versions. If UD sings always ShobhaG and say Swarada sings always natya, both excellent, I know UD would be the winner because of popularity 'n not deservingly. Democracy in the judgement is not a very wise thing, though we have in India. One can sing item songs, and be a winner.

Sounds reasonable. One should prove excellence in multiple generae and not just a few.

The problem comes when a narrow group of people insist on a litmus test on genre.

I think if there is any listmus test ... it should be about swar and bhaav (and may be "lay"). Everything else is substitutable. A genre only allows you to understand the depth of those key elements. An ITEM song usually wouldn't be good for this purpose ... but if there is one I don't have a problem with it.

You are right. As long as the live audience, judges, ZM and viewers do not get distracted by the mood of the song (item, catchy, etc.) in their judgments on qualities you said, it is fine....and I doubt that happens honestly.

I don't mean to be patronizing, but I meant: ITEM songs don't lend themselve well to judging the basic elements (so judges would certainly not look at them favorably - although general audience might very well).

As far as getting distracted ...wooed ... fascinated... It is hard to tell where to draw the line. Whatever you call it, that's the whole point of singing a song for an audience. I wouldn't doubt somebody's taste.

Beauty is in the eyes of beholder. It's all subjective.

It's grossly unfair to say KG received once more's only on ITEMs. KG received once mores on bhaav/abhang/gazal/vasantrao/s­ugam in addition to "Kombadi PaLali". None of the other contestants EVER attempted to sing a completely unheard song let alone take a "once more" on that one. That in itself speaks volumes to what a rare talent she is.

I didnt mean to say "ONCE MORE" is a criterion. All I said is it indicated popularity of the contestant in absence of official vote count.

I never said that. I said it is easy to get once more for a catchy song (be item or classical, or any other mood) . Hence "once more" can not be a criterion. As far as popularity, I need not say anything. Everyone can interprete it according to their wish..On Internet forums, it was not for KG IMObservations. On unheard song, if you remember Vairatkar from LC, her parents had asked for permissions to let sing her grandparents composition, which ZM denied. Why rule change for KG?

Notwithstanding expert opinion, all the once mores, all the maginificent songs, the convincing performance in final ..Everything that KG wins hands down can't be a criterion it seems.

I think most of the viewers are still attached with Little Champs. No doubt it showcased what those little kids did at their tender age, but comparing every performance of this lot to LC is highly unfair & out of sorts. So just enjoy this season with fresh pair of ears :)

I would love to see how Urmila perform in other genres...
