can someone explain to me the stripes on these belts? I know this master is higher than 3rd dan.

It stands for title. Renshi, Kyoshi, Shihan... etc.

@KARATEbyJesse Actually, Renshi is one stripe, 2 is Kiyoshi and 3 is Hanshi (different than shihan)

@brothanews dear friend, in some ranking stripe sistems (which i think this represents) one stripe is aded until the 6 dan graduation. wich makes 6 stripes total in one side of the belt.
but 7 dan is repesented not by 7 stripes but one stripe in each side of the belt, 8 dan by 2 stripes on each side and 9 dan by 3 stripes on each side just like the sensei here represented. 10 dan uses red or red and white belts. most are not vain, so they use just a simple black belt.:)
