  • Today, the engine uses a better whistle than the old one. The old one got sent back it its original owner who's selling it. It's probably sold already.

  • I go to this bridge all the time crazy to think that 3 steamers have crossed it

  • @HaloCE14 Ya, like it's that easy. You've still got that loose grip on reality, Halo.,

  • I Expect It Will Be You! Replied The 4-8-4 Milwaukee Road Northern #261! The AT&SF #3751 Got Stuck up In The Shed For Being Silly!

  • Never!

  • Ha. COCKROACH2008 can join him!! Right???

  • Good show! I'd personally love to see the Southern Railway Ps4 #1401 running again, but we all know that won't happen. The 4012, even though she has been in the open, could run if they restored her. It would just take alot of work. At least she is in better condition that the CP Jubilee 4-4-4 or the CN 4-6-4T Baltic Tank engine.

  • How Bad is CP 2929 (Jubilee) anyways? I saw a picture of her taken in 2006 and she has definitely seen better days. But I do not think that she is in all that bad a shape, since she was running back in the 1980's before steamtown moved. Steamtown should really look after her a little better since there are only two of them left.

  • Haven't seen her personally, but she seems to be one of the worst in the Steamtown collection. I believe there is another CN 2-8-2, with a missing pilot truck. Probably used for parts for the other Steamtown CN mikado.

  • but that's the thing steam can get their full power with frieght. the railroad companies just don't know that. this engine gives

    64,800 lbf (288,000 N), 78,000 lbf (350,000 N) with booster. one GE Dash 9-40CW has 4,000HP

  • I'm sure they know that, but Diesels are more cost effective to run, well, soon they might not be what with the rising prices of oil.

  • Thank you! Someone needs to bring one of the 'Big Boys' out of retirement. Those beasts are just begging to be used again, and I am all for putting at least one of them back into service again.

  • This engineer is a "class act". It's not to often you hear someone work the whistle this well anymore. "Fantastic".

  • That's Doyle McCormack at the whistle. He's the president of the ORHF, and he's dedicated his life to saving this relic for future generations. Old fart's got a lot of heart.

  • In service the GS class used their airhorn. The whistle was only used for calling in/out the flagman. But Doyle's not a fan of the airhorn, authentic though it may be. Can't blame him.

  • Thought you'd be interested to know... my cousing was a hoghead on the SP for 45 years. He drove the 4449 and he HATED the airhorn. Told me several times he never used it.

  • What is your cousin's name??

  • Send me your email. He passed away 20 years ago in his 90s...

  • Did he ever say what whistle the 4449 had on the SP?

  • Daniel, Mike never told me the make or design of the whistle. He did tell me several times quite strongly that he did not like the airhorn and refused to use it. He loved the whistle. At the first Sacramento Railfair in 1981, he was in his late 80s or early 90s and could identify the 4449s whistle from a mile away and, could distinguish it from UP8444's and 3985's whistles. I read somewhere the 4449 had its whistle replaced in the last 20 years, but it still sounds more robust than any other.

  • Gorgeous!!! Ya gotta come to Stettler Alberta and take a ride on CN 6060

  • Woow, what a howl... Was the track inclining, or did the driver just give an overheavy steamflow for the sound effect?

  • I don't get why anyone would wanna burn down a trestle. I had to go somewhere different because of that trestle fire.

  • I hope that that arsonist has learned his lesson! By the way, that is a great video.

  • Heck with shakey, that's just plain cool.

  • Nothing to me will ever match the steam locomotive for pure excitement. When I was little, the sheer power of these machines terrified me. But I always wanted to see one anyway. It gave me goosebumps. I just tingled all over. This loco, SP4449, was the first vehicle to bring me from Oregon to California in 1945. I was just a wee sprout of three at the time.

  • Eye*Candy!

    cant wait for 4449 & 844 everett 2 seattle

    in summer '07

  • I don't know if that's been confirmed yet. I saw 4449 and her stablemate 700 at the 2005 NRHS Convention. It was a dream come true for me when I saw the engine in action.

  • where are you getting the info for the 4449 & 844 to Seattle on 07?
