You have already given up everything once you are connected to the "cloud" can you say no to government when they want your info, you can't, they have "the rights" to just come into your computer and storage with or without you knowing it or consent.
I bet the are doing it depends on if you are important enough for them to spend resources on.
"The Cloud" isn't a bad idea, but cloud computers are just so stupid. Where I live there is NO public WIFI, zilch. I'll stick with my Acer TimelineX with a HARD drive, not some CLOUD drive off who-knows where.
Who says you have to give up your PC? Google advertises this for people that spend most of their computer usage online. Im sure there are thousands who use software for specific applications, but think of thousands of non geek people that don't want to mess with geek stuff, think of parents, grandparents or people that just want email, web, docs and web games, sounds like my wife to the T. She bought a $1K Sony laptop and all she does is play facebook games and manage her music via itunes.
@espaghetti99 You know, there's no iTunes on a chromebook. Or anything to manage any mobile device you might have. And in 9/10 cases, that means you even won't be able to print a document.
I'm not gonna say that I agree with everything because I havent made my mind yet on 'the cloud' or whatever, but you do have very valid points and I can agree to most of it.
javascript can run offline and it's extremely lite + it's extremely easy to develop with.
Give me a break, if you put something online it's not private. So if you use the internet, don't bitch about them having your information.
I think the future will consist of only cloud computing. Basically all laptops will not hold heavy cpus, but the computer's power outsourced to powerful servers. (just like onlive) As I see it the chromebook is the next step to the future.
if they make a chromebook for around 100-150 bucks (no more then a low range smartphone) I might consider buying it, and using it for simple browsing and working when in traffic (public transport, not behind the wheel, I'm not an idiot), but as a main, I'll keep my core-i7 asus
you are a hater google os is the future no matter what ,they still get you information when you make a gmail account so unless you want to save something with you life then it is stupid what your saying.
The web, to me, is obviously the desktop platform of the future. But could something like chrome OS work for smartphones?... That is, a smartphone that depends solely on web apps and hardware acceleration.. I'm not as convinced on that front..
@TheMrDisser You are seriously getting some sort of enjoyment out of this arguing aren't you? Come on man can we just drop it, we have our own opinions and thats fine, you dont like Apple thats your opinion and I respect it, but I do like Apple along with Microsoft, I have no favorite, can we just go along with our opinions and be done with it? :)
Screw these chrome books they are dumb i would only buy one if they were like 100 dollars and I still probably wouldn't use it, damnit google android is great, now wtf is this shit!
ill tell you what, you would have made a video how good the cloud services offered if it was apple who came up with it, you apple fan boys are just so pathetic.
@shehanster He isn't a apple fanboy dumbass, yes he has a mac, but he also has like 3 pc's, I,m not an apple fanboy either, yea my username is mywonderapple and i have a mac but i also have a windows xp computer and a ubuntu 10.10 computer, i am also running windows 7 on my mac with parallels, stop calling people apple fanboys when you have no idea what your talking about.
Chromebooks are for idiots who can't even turn on a light switch by themselves...which is sadly 95 percent of the human population. This is just another way that Google can sell your personal info to marketers and make you think it's all in the name of "Consumer Convenience". My advice...Buy a dual core netbook, get antivirus software and stop watching porn...You'll be fine.
@matheusmtBR I don't know, with as many ill-informed consumers out there, it may be sooner. I mean, think how fast the iPad sold in the past year. Granted, tablets in general haven't, but give it another year or so they'll be as commonplace as smartphones. At the moment, Google doing it will be seen as nothing more than a footnote, but if Microsoft or (god forbid) Apple were to go to cloud based OS's in their next version, and no one did anything to stop them, that would be all she wrote.
Another bill to fill? We have Bill Gates, we do not need more bills. Cloud computing? Quit cloud walking and return to earth please...... Uber FAIL.......
very good points Dave, unfortunately chrome will be adopted by a lot of government officials and not only because it's very "cheap" to rent one of this(~$20/mo. + that they will replace it if it stops working).
Imagine a "camera lens in the middle of the Chrome icon" -- can you do that?! now imagine a "web full of Chrome icons with camera lens" <-- YEP, that's where we're going...
Dude, nice that you are bringing that up. We are coming to that future from the sci-fi movies with all-knowing and controlling gov-t and corprations that you can't stand up to.
my biggest complaint about the cloud is data caps. they're becoming much more common. so what happens when you want to access something on the cloud but you're over your data usage? nothing.
the only advantage to me is the fact that you free up space on your hard drive. but hard drives have become pretty cheap. you can get a 1TB for around $60. how many people can actually use that much?
niche market. hard-core techies are the only ones I can see buying these.
Not interested, for privacy issues, this is a bad idea. And not to mention, just today the oh so monopolized Google/Youtube/Blogger/Gmail were down due to having some "issues". So would have been my operating system. No thanks.
Chromebooks are not the future. Some people will embrace them, but with smartphones and tablets already wildly popular they're late to the game. Since these NetBooks are basically less functional tablets with physical keyboards.
I wouldn't want a Chromebook or other Cloud OS. If I was going to buy something like this I would by a tablet.
Google is always happy to give up your personal information to the government without ever telling you.
that is awfully expensive for a chrome browser laptop. I can but up my laptop, install Chrome, put it in full screen and call it a chromebook. except I have all my data and applications at my fingertips as well.
T O N T O. asi eres.
@c3806md You know, I really think cloud computing is a good thing, I upload a document on SkyDrive and I can edit at the computers in my school, for example. But the problem here is: Google, Apple, Microsoft, any company can see my files, that's a fact. So, cloud computing is good, but how do I know that I still have my privacy?
you're never ever gonna run out of wifi and 3g at the same time, well except if u leave in a really remote and under developed area which in that case u shouldn't be buying a chrome book in the first place. It'll just like dropbox
chrome book will fall. the idea is absurd. once people know the details in chrome book, nobody will buy it and it will be microsoft and apple's laughing topic.
If they were cheaper than ordenary netbooks i could see why some people would prefer them, but since they're not, there's absolutely no advantage whatsoever to them.
Chromebooks could be the future but more than likely tablets are the future. This cloud based operating system seems too unreliable, and you mentioned students with assignements in this video but a majority of students including myself don't have the luxury of wi-fi or even a dougal Internet so this would be another problem. But another great video dave And just seen the tags lol sandwich, ice cream ? I like it :P
Its a good thing Dave, software is always better then hardware, yes you need hardware to run the software, but you can get software that supports its self, and can make virtual hardware, like ram from the hard drive, its nice to see this type of thing, its not going to replace anything, did the tablets replace computers, no, Chrome is a tablet in my eyes, its one that made apple speed up, Right!
Awesome video Dave. As usual :) Your opinion about Chromebooks is exactly like mine and exactly right. Cloud computing is the future but cloud should be integrated in the OS rather than the whole OS to be based on the cloud. Apparently, Windows 8 is gonna have a LOT of cloud integration. Let's see :)
I think a "cloudCube" product that will have all your files and games stored on it will be the future. But it would have to be a personal product that you set up in your home and can access from any other device whether it be your desktop for doing heavy duty work or your iOS device for watching movies listening to music etc. So instead of constantly transferring files all over the place you could access them from anywhere on your "cloudCube" with the piece of mind that you still own your files.
Facebook is bed with the NSA only pretentious idiots use it. I read morons are posting on Facebook when they go on vacation and getting their houses robbed. What the YT video 'The truth about facebook'.
I am currently a university student, i am much looking forward to seeing the potential in these products. Everywhere on campus has a wifi connection including my home this chrome OS will work fine for me.
I had decided that I would be purchasing a Chromebook for college as soon as it was released but you provided some very potent arguments against them. It's making me reconsider if getting one is really worth the price. Excellent video and thank you for opening my eyes and mind on the subject. Much appreciated!
@jetfly15 a SSD is a solid state drive, with almost no moving parts while a HDD or hard disk drive has spinning disks in it that had to get up to a certain RPM for the computer to boot correctly, so yes, HDD and SSD have a considerable bootup time difference
Very informative Dave and cool beginning. I really liked how you brought up the privacy issues. I agree with you about everything you said in the vid. I would rather have a computer that can store my stuff, so I can use it when I have no net connection. Thanks for another awesome vid, Dave.
@skrbicdu I can and will hate OSX, considering they stole their kernel from openBSD, which is a UNIX-based kernel similar to linux. That being, open sourced. I'm not the fanboy here. I have my facts.
I think Internet syncing services married with local apps and a local operating systems is the best idea, though for developers it would be easier to just develop for the web and that's it..
Ubuntu boots in 20 seconds from a hard drive on a 6 year old shit-top. I think we can all see that Linux is the future, no doubt. Enough of this OSX shit.
I will still give it a shot. Are you really talking these chrome books should be cheaper @LACK78? Anything apple makes is grossly more expensive than what it costs by a lot. You can't have it both ways Dave.
Just get a MacBook Air is slim small and sleek are so important people. If the MBA had a little more flash storage space and 8GB RAM and a Sandybridge that would be soooo amazing!!!
my MacBook Pro boots from 'sleep' in about 8 seconds. From 'cold' in about 45 seconds. I think I can live with that. And it works offline and can follow me where I go.... in my bag.
@mtbuk1982 With an SSD its 5 seconds from sleep and 13 seconds from cold. Benefits of 'the cloud' are kind of mute, especially with the current generation of SSDs hitting 500MBps reead and write speeds.
Dropbox kind of makes the 'but with cloud computing you never loose data' statement redundant as well.
I understand the idea of the cloud computing, but the only reason to make a cloud OS is to make smaller, lighter pc but these ones google released are just the same size, weight and form factor as any other netbook out there, so why not give them great specs??
I hate this idea. We have come so far in technology over the last few years and now we are going back to ancient specs again. I hope this doesn't catch on...
Um...i totally don't have 200GB of torrented movies...
Yeah these chromebooks are for kids. like 10 year olds who don't need privacy anyways. this would be useless for me. it would mean paying a 3g bill every month to what? turn on your computer on the bus? these are for kids, netbooks are fore kids, tablets are for the technologically impaired, and notebooks are for me and you Dave. I like what i have and only use Dropbox as a convenient USB stick replacement. Time Capsule works for the rest.
It's a great idea in theory. The problem of " Cloud" computing lies in the the infrastructure. The US having started the Internet thing (thank you Al Gore- haha) has trouble catching up to the rest of the world in the speed race because of our older infrastructure. So many promises from companies, so little actual results ie most of 4G networks are actually only 3G, Fios isn't available everywhere, ETC ...etc.. What am I trying to say? I'm saying that with all these new eye catching toys..
Google says that this more for businesses and schools, where computer updates are really expensive. Google's cloud computing, although not perfect, solves that problem. On the privacy issues, I hope Google finds a solution that works for everyone. Even you Dave
No I just don't like the idea. Obviously most things are going that way and there are things I want stored in the cloud but my os isn't one of them. Part of the reason why is I don't really feel the need to pay another wireless company monthly just to use my damn computer lol. I know you can use wifi but only if you're in a wifi area. Just sounds ridiculous
Thanks Dave for the video. I really don't like cloud computing or these Chromebooks.
To your question: The future is cloud-based services but not operating systems. Just like Google's meager sales of Nexus phone devices, these chromebooks will get a lot of coverage, but not a lot of sales. Why pay for a netbook experience? The public has already spoken. Tablets with the cloud will win at that price point. If I want a laptop-style machine, I want it to be a workhorse. Web apps suck btw.
Thank you for your insights Dave. There is quite a lot to discuss regarding Cloudbased os. I know for a fact that in the final of this month, RUSI will be giving a seminar on Social Networks Intelligence research techniques, if that catches your eye, PM me. Regards.
I'm vehemently opposed to cloud computing. I don't even have a portable pc (my netbook broke anyway). I have a power guzzling, heat belching, large, noisy (and oh so powerful) gaming rig, proudly running vista ultimate x64 because it can. I think of it from the perspective of: "My pc runs vista ultimate better than your pc runs 7 home premium" I play online games, but also have games that are useful without internet like minecraft, and my media library as well. No cloud for me...
Well, cloud computing can be good...in some ways but I prefer to use something like Joli OS instead of Chrome OS and yes those netbooks are really overpriced and not really great in design I think (the Cr-48 was better).
But, truly, I prefer to have an operating system as it is now, it is at least complete and I think more secure than on the cloud.
it would make sence for google to put honeycomb on its laptop with the chrome browser engine with hardware acceleration den they would have something good.... THAT'S JUST MY OPINION
I'm gunna stick to mah good old acer netbook thanks. Chrome OS is a good idea, but they need to make it so all my files are on the device and protected from them peeking into them
I doubt they're the future, and you're completely right, if they lack internal storage and an actual paid os, why're they the same price?
And I really don't like the idea of handing my personal documents over to a large webserver, if people wanted to do that they'd just write their thesis on an email page.
It doesn't work like that, I like hard copies and I'm staying that way indefinitely.
You have already given up everything once you are connected to the "cloud" can you say no to government when they want your info, you can't, they have "the rights" to just come into your computer and storage with or without you knowing it or consent.
I bet the are doing it depends on if you are important enough for them to spend resources on.

@Rolfcopter4b When did it become wrong to ask for thumbs up? I'm meaning stating the truth. Sad. Cloud computing is the future.
ahbitheman1 9 months ago
@skrbicdu I can and will hate OSX, considering they stole their kernel from openBSD, which is a UNIX-based kernel similar to linux. That being, open sourced. I'm not the fanboy here. I have my facts.
Roflcopter4b 9 months ago
If it was apple that did this and not google you'd love it. Let's me honest. Thumbs up if u agree

I think Internet syncing services married with local apps and a local operating systems is the best idea, though for developers it would be easier to just develop for the web and that's it..

I will still give it a shot. Are you really talking these chrome books should be cheaper @LACK78? Anything apple makes is grossly more expensive than what it costs by a lot. You can't have it both ways Dave.

my MacBook Pro boots from 'sleep' in about 8 seconds. From 'cold' in about 45 seconds. I think I can live with that. And it works offline and can follow me where I go.... in my bag.
mtbuk1982 9 months ago 32
@mtbuk1982 they are updating chrome os to allow you to work offline with some apps, and all google office apps.
2vikings2 9 months ago
@mtbuk1982 yeah but what happens when your macbook is stolen
mountaianeerfly 9 months ago
@mtbuk1982 With an SSD its 5 seconds from sleep and 13 seconds from cold. Benefits of 'the cloud' are kind of mute, especially with the current generation of SSDs hitting 500MBps reead and write speeds.
Dropbox kind of makes the 'but with cloud computing you never loose data' statement redundant as well.
Polymerabbit 9 months ago
I understand the idea of the cloud computing, but the only reason to make a cloud OS is to make smaller, lighter pc but these ones google released are just the same size, weight and form factor as any other netbook out there, so why not give them great specs??
butsy95 9 months ago
I hope not!
Clarkeness 9 months ago

Artificialkel 9 months ago
It's a great idea in theory. The problem of " Cloud" computing lies in the the infrastructure. The US having started the Internet thing (thank you Al Gore- haha) has trouble catching up to the rest of the world in the speed race because of our older infrastructure. So many promises from companies, so little actual results ie most of 4G networks are actually only 3G, Fios isn't available everywhere, ETC ...etc.. What am I trying to say? I'm saying that with all these new eye catching toys..
RelicDavvi 9 months ago
..... there's not infrastructure to back them up and thus they fail or have a negative image because their support systems can't keep up.
And I agree with Dave's privacy concerns. Great idea, this cloud computer-ering, but too many back door into your personal life.
Lastly, Dave you have a great name, my baby is going to have your name! hahaha
RelicDavvi 9 months ago
(ran of room read "it's a great idea ...in theory..." first)
RelicDavvi 9 months ago
Google says that this more for businesses and schools, where computer updates are really expensive. Google's cloud computing, although not perfect, solves that problem. On the privacy issues, I hope Google finds a solution that works for everyone. Even you Dave
VideoJargon 9 months ago
No I just don't like the idea. Obviously most things are going that way and there are things I want stored in the cloud but my os isn't one of them. Part of the reason why is I don't really feel the need to pay another wireless company monthly just to use my damn computer lol. I know you can use wifi but only if you're in a wifi area. Just sounds ridiculous
Zombiebrainstew 9 months ago
Thanks Dave for the video. I really don't like cloud computing or these Chromebooks.
To your question: The future is cloud-based services but not operating systems. Just like Google's meager sales of Nexus phone devices, these chromebooks will get a lot of coverage, but not a lot of sales. Why pay for a netbook experience? The public has already spoken. Tablets with the cloud will win at that price point. If I want a laptop-style machine, I want it to be a workhorse. Web apps suck btw.

No cloud for me...
psychoclown420 9 months ago
I bet the next "big thing" would be a Chromeslate. Sigh.
kroen 9 months ago
Well, cloud computing can be good...in some ways but I prefer to use something like Joli OS instead of Chrome OS and yes those netbooks are really overpriced and not really great in design I think (the Cr-48 was better).
But, truly, I prefer to have an operating system as it is now, it is at least complete and I think more secure than on the cloud.
Niflheyn 9 months ago
the acer one too has dual core processor
kroen 9 months ago
The scenario you described shouldn't occur. As I understand it, as long as you have internet, it periodically saves. For every stroke and click.
The price makes no sense at all. I don't understand why they don't decrease the price.
BrokenBjartur 9 months ago
it would make sence for google to put honeycomb on its laptop with the chrome browser engine with hardware acceleration den they would have something good.... THAT'S JUST MY OPINION
maddwog17 9 months ago
I'm gunna stick to mah good old acer netbook thanks. Chrome OS is a good idea, but they need to make it so all my files are on the device and protected from them peeking into them

boodmaster 9 months ago
I doubt they're the future, and you're completely right, if they lack internal storage and an actual paid os, why're they the same price?
And I really don't like the idea of handing my personal documents over to a large webserver, if people wanted to do that they'd just write their thesis on an email page.
It doesn't work like that, I like hard copies and I'm staying that way indefinitely.

macypctutoriales 9 months ago
@macypctutoriales - That'd be worth it if they were cheaper than a laptop with Windows pre-installed...
