Ray Mears is coming to Ontario Canada in June 2012 to teach a Bushcraft course. As far as we are aware, this is his first time teaching in North America. There are only 25 spots available. If you are interested contact us for details!
@lordsummerisle87 hmm very true. Im just saying that hacking through up to 1 metre (or more!) of ice might be slightly impractical in a survival situation....
@00Avenger17 I take your point -- in a 'survival' situation (by which I mean an unexpected event occurs whereby your survival hangs in the balance) hacking through 1m of ice with an axe would expend a lot of calories, likely more than you would catch with improvised tackle. However in a long-term situation this may pay off -- this is a 'bushcraft' program, not a 'survival' program.
In any case, take along suitable kit and rations -- they'll buy you time to either get home, get rescued or fish.
@lordsummerisle87 Oky I say we keep it at a truce =P I just find it slightly confusing when he uses the term "survival" so many times - however if he uses tools its not really survival is it - maybe slightly tougher camping xD ? Despite this I have immense respect for Ray!
@00Avenger17 Completely agree. What Mears needs to realize is that he does Extreme Camping and NOT survival. The funniest of his videos was when he shows us how to make an axe handle with, you guessed it, an axe. Next thing you know, he'll teach us how to filter water by first pulling out a Brita filter.
@mistasho17 Yes! =P I completely agree with you :P So true! I find that Ray Mears is really great when it comes to his knowledge about survival (which I greatly admire) however I find myself sitting there a bit confused sometimes when he starts using tools which you would NEVER have in a true "survival" situation.
@00Avenger17 Well the only chance of getting Fish for food in this situation would be if you were staying or lucky enough to stumble across a cabin where more likely than not there would be a orga, Many many cabins world wide have Orgas.
@Schutzstaffel23 Dude, are you seriuos? Don't tell me he doesn't look mongoloid, its obvious that those evil shades makes you at least 2/4 of a mongoloid.
@Schutzstaffel23 It's dangerous to wear those in the artic, wild animals becomes even wilder when mongoloids are around. Plus, there are several well ducumented cases when artic squirrels have raped mongoloids in that specific area they are filming in, its like dressing like an elk durring the annual elk-hunt, except for the over hanging risk of squirrel rape. So is it really worth it? is it?

how to break through ice WITHOUT the tool? (if you were in a survival situation....)
00Avenger17 1 year ago 11
@00Avenger17
Ice chisel or axe, and a lot more effort.
If you're in that situation without an axe, you're as good as dead anyway.
