Well, anything that doesn't change, cant be the self - cos the self is something which constantly changes So, self and soul are incompatible It's worth thinking about what we really mean by 'my self' It's an inherently transient phenomenon So, any idea of a 'permanent self' is a misconception All that supernatural stuff was added later, by religious-types As was the idea of getting a better reincarnation - as a reward to inspire the villages, so they'd continue providing food for the monks :-)
When I try to keep it real, I find we're just our brains in our body. Keep that brain and body functioning and we'll be fine (in a sense, life can be miserable too).
