I did the same thing. I still am not sure why, but there could be a number of reasons. Maybe it's because it's the ending of a great series? Maybe because as you see Light running along, he runs past his old self, and you see what potential he had, what he could have been. I'm sure he would have become a great cop if he never found that thing.

But he did. Like Near said, he gave into the shinigami and the power of the notebook, in a way he was beaten by it.

With the manga, I didn't feel any sadness when Light died - I felt that he was crazy and needed to finally die. The anime actually managed to make me teary-eyed over his death, and I didn't even like him. In both cases, I wish L hadn't died, Near wasn't nearly as good.
