  • Silent Running came out in 1972 and Star Wars came out in 1977, so it came out five years before star Wars.

  • Bruce Dern being interviewed in his dystopian steampunk palace apparently. Also how the fuck does he look about 50 while Jack Nicolson looks like a monkey's paw found at the bottom of a swimming pool?

  • SHUT UP AND PAINT YOUR GODDAMN HOUSE!

  • This movie got pretty much standard promotion in Ohio USA when it came out and I went to see it. I am sorry it did not make them the money they craved at the beginning but everyone my age listened to me about it. We all of us went into studying environmental sciences and such. Quite a few very good movies were kind of blipped over, but hey. That was Ohio. They were not exactly playing to a bunch of very aware people!

  • When I saw this I was 10. I wanted to be Bruce Dern. Great actor.

  • Respond to this video... How many humans where there during the last climate change ?!How many now ?THIS last year has the most radical weather I have ever seen in my 62 yrs !This time around millions of people will die Look the drougths and servere storms we are having! All you nyesayers with children should think about them!

  • Wall-E can't hold a candle to Silent Running. The script is clumsy, rushes to cover too much thematic space, mixes genres and dillutes its own message with the wrong kind of humor at the wrong time (probably thanks to Disney) and is embarrassingly OTN, especially at the end.

It COULD have been - SHOULD have been - a part of the Silent Running legacy. In the end, it just didn't take the topic seriously enough.

  • @mjl1966y

Hold on there buddy. Both Running & Wall-E are great films with great soundtracks..You are kind of comparing apples & oranges there though . I mean Wall-E is essentially a kids film. So it can't afford to be to preachy. Since that would Alienate or even intimated the kids. Even John Ratzenberger said that. "We really should'nt bombard kids with messages"

  • The film changed something in SI-FI as a film genre. I LOVE it it as sole and love.

I would now compare it to - MOON, film released in 2010.

Both great in their own right. You don't need a massive enfaces on special effects to tell a great story, these films advance not only SI-FI, but also film making in general.

Bruce Dern - FANTASTIC ACTOR!!! in all his films, I salute you Sir!

  • Did Mr. Dern take a break from welding to do this interview ?

Plus where in the hell did they interview this gentleman, an broken

    ice cooler ?

  • Besides the fact that 2001 was 4 years before Silent Running, not 2, Bruce Dern is one of the finest actors in the world and Silent Running is one of the most touching and heartwarming stories in cinema. Bless you sir and Douglas Trumbull for your work.

  • Over 40 years later and apart from his white hair Derns looks like he has barely aged at all.

  • I love that guy, very endearing actor even after he played some real arseholes. Still can't beat his character in The Burbs lol

  • Very fine actor commenting about a terrific movie that's certainly ahead of its time. Silent Running is more of an ecology tale than a science fiction story. With the way the rain forests are being decimated today, it's warning is more relevant than ever.

  • My Favorite Sci-Fi Movie ..period.. Great human drama that runs deep and is thought provoking . I really don't watch many movies but I have watched this one a few times. My son loves it as well. I will guess that Silent Running will -or may already be- a sci-fi classic..

  • The line I remember in the movie: "everywhere you go on Earth it's 75 degs". I don't know if he means the whole earth is 75 degs or that Earth has become a Corcusant type city planet where you never need to go outside. Don't think it's possible for the earth to be a uniform 75degs.

  • Its all evolution but it doesn't mean we should not try to save as much as we can, for as long as we can, but sadly those in power can make money from taxes and so called green ideas.

  • One thing that everyone who knows ecology... if gobal warming happens...it will NOT kill the planet... Is the ice cap melting...yes... is see levels rising...yes...is it having an effect on the gulf stream and its ability to keep stability... yes....

The panet is like a living organism! It adapts to the changes around it. The seas might swallow up coastal cities...the planet may get hotter! BUT!!!! The planet will equalize itself out eventually!

  • @Sparrowhawk1161 True, but we will lose an unbelievable number of species in the process because they can't adapt to such rapid warming and human destruction of the environment blocks any chance they might have at adapting. The biodiversity of Earth is what makes it beautiful. We should not be so casual about losing that beauty. We do not have to exacerbate the effects of climate change and we are embarking on a dangerous experiment.

  • Climate change or not, many species disappear every day because of the carelessness of human.

  • When I first watched it 37 years ago, I liked "Silent Running". Since then I grew up and realized what propagandist garbage it was.

He gave a good performance, but it was just anti-human junk with lousy science.

  • @Hiraghm So you grew up and became a climate change denier? Bravo for you? lol :(

  • @MisterChimpy

Yup, don't believe in the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy anymore either.

  • @Hiraghm I guess science isn't your strong suit then.

  • @MisterChimpy

It's not surprising that you're lousy at guessing, since you obviously worship at the altar of global warming and won't let the facts discourage your faith.

  • @Hiraghm Facts? lol, sorry but you're clearly drinking the koolaid that Faux News and Limbaugh have been serving up. Facts, lol.

  • @MisterChimpy

Actually, using reason, and 30 years of experiencing panic-mongering on the environmental left led me to my conclusions. The actual nail in the coffin for me was a youtube video by Bob Carter, a geologist whose findings more accurately reflect my knowledge of the Earth's climatic history.

  • @Hiraghm Bob Carter is a paid shill for petroleum companies. Look it up yourself. Funny that your 'reason' leads you to believe this moron over the vast consensus of science. Climate change isn't settled, but I wonder why? Google DSCOVR sometime and see how Conservatives whine about not enough data, while blocking any attempt to get said data. Pathetic and dangerous.

  • @MisterChimpy

I don't care who pays him. AlGore and his cronies stand to make a fortune out of the global warming hoax.

The *facts* he cites, such as the ice core data, are consistent with the *facts* I learned in the various science classes I took from gradeschool to college, as well as my own research on the subject.

For example, croplands combat "global warming" better than do "rainforests". And, carbon dioxide levels were far, far higher in the carboniferous era, when plants ruled.

  • @Hiraghm

I never thought the movie was single-minded eco-loony propaganda. The character murders his crewmates, but he can't live with what he's done so he loses his marbles and kills himself rather than faces the consequences.

  • Oh my gosh! Long-hair developed a geezer voice. That ending song makes the movie.

  • Dern is one of my favorites. You hear me boy?

  • Bruce Dern is an over acting helmet.

  • How come nobody ever made a sequel to this brilliant film? Should have been a 3 movie deal.

  • @Duffytoler ALIEN was a sequal to SILENT RUNNING. And WALL-E was a sequal to SILENT RUNNING.

They still haven't made a movie explaining what happened to the dome.

  • @BUDDY6414724297 ... And they never will/

  • Bruce Dern is so right

  • "Go ahead make my day!"

    Tyler Smith

  • GOD BLESS YOU for posting this. I have always wanted to know what Bruce Dern would say about this movie these days, so many years later (and also this movie in relation to the movies that came after it). This is a most precious treat and valuable piece of video. Who took this video and asked Dern these questions by the way? Thank you SO MUCH.

  • So tell me Mr Dern, what's your take on the film, and the fact your character murdered three men to save "nature"?

  • @Sonnabend00 great ,well said Mr dern, and i would'nt have felt bad about killing them guys.because i would of had my robots...

  • @mantooth3245 ah I see...a gaia worshipper....

  • @Sonnabend00 "Yeah" i reckon to follow the side of the human race and all it destroys is an easy choice to choose a robot as a friend to have on a lonely Space ship.. Gaia is the more rewarding choice..

  • @mantooth3245 Go hug a tree, nutter.

  • @Sonnabend00 go cut down a forest ,harpoon a whale and club a baby seal you nutter... peace out..

  • @mantooth3245 I dont intend to do any of those things nor would I ever...then again I am not some environazi who would prefer to see us all in caves freezing and starving to death, all in the name of "nature" One million whales do not measure up to ONE human life

    .

  • @Sonnabend00

One million whales do not measure up to ONE human life.

People like you are the reason why the world is failing....

Go and waste some water or something....

  • In the mid to late 1970s Santa Ana College (Santa Ana CA) had showing of SILENT RUNNING. The person who played DRONE 1 was also there. The film was shown upstairs of the bookstore at the time.

  • Later met a husband and wife who sold American folkart and they told me they knew Mr Dern. I had the album of Silent Running and asked them if it was possible to get his autograph on it. They told me he would and came back a week later and they gave me the album with Mr Dean autograph!

  • Love the film Silent Running and later worked at developing and presenting planetarium shows at Tessmann Planetarium located on the campus of Santa Ana College, in Santa Ana CA and used the music from Silent Running in my star shows!

    L

  • Dern you are a great actor, but at the time you had second thoughts about doing it.

  • It does me, I think it's the song.

  • i saw this movie when i was a teen. the ending made me cry. loved hewey, louie and dewie

  • Bruce Dern hates Sci-fi and he almost passed on the part. But now it is his favorite film.

    And he still HATES Sci-fi!

  • please can you describe, what he is saying in 0:8? I understand "it was a heart of its time". Is it correct? And what does it mean? Does it mean, it was "foreward" for its time or something? SOrry, iam german and i want to understand it correctly. Thanks a lot

  • Ahead of it's time.

  • Pygar2: Many thanks!!

  • @Feijnhorn I guess he said "it was ahead of its time" and it means something like new or innovative. I think you got the idea.

I also checked some german dictionary translations and it seems to me it means quite literally the same as 'seiner Zeit voraus'. (Not too sure though.)

  • @VanRootstuck jeah you are right. It is the correct meaning (german/english). I had a presentation about this movie and I got 1,0 :-). It was great. Best wishes

  • @Feijnhorn Should have been "ahead of its time."

  • Great movie! I love "Silent Running"!

  • ...and "KEv" would be more appropriate. i adopted the dual majuscules when i was pulling some FReeper's chain a few years ago.

    KEvron

  • i know the film. superbowl and blimps. been decades since i've seen it.

    KEvron

  • At the time, only Bruce Dern and the writer thought he could play the hero.

But now it hard to think on anyone else in the lead.

  • How about a 70 MM remake of SILENT RUNNING?

  • Bruce Dern is still one of the most underrated actors out there.

    I love watching you act.

  • I love you Bruce!

  • interesting sunglasses...has he been welding something?

  • @82648947 The description says that he's on set of another movie, which explains his wardrobe and goggles: "Bruce Dern on the set of THE HOLE 3-D about his time making SILENT RUNNING"

  • I can see that about War of the Worlds gets a free pass on that one, but Gilligan's Island had laugh tracks, background music and credits..people are something else..

  • Bruce Dern has hitherto always looked older than his years, but in this clip he certainly looks younger than his current age of almost 73. Let's hope we have him around and active for a good while yet. Despite sometimes playing despicable villains as in "Cowboys" with John Wayne, one thinks of him as one of the nice guys of the screen.

  • the despicable villain was just a character in a movie. I think it proves how stupid people are when you consider he received death threats for 'killing' John Wayne's character in a movie of all things. Andrew Robinson received death threats after playing the Scorpio killer in Dirty Harry, no difference, people are idiotic.

  • "sometimes playing despicable villains"

dern have a gift for playing complex characters.

    KEvron

  • @Hendrikdevuile

I have to agree. He always looked awful rough for his age back in the day but he looks pretty good now. I wouldn't mind seeing him back in action. As for what Laura would say, well....

  • No Silent Running-No Bruce Dern career.

  • Bruce you almost walked off the film SILENT RUNNING. At first you didn't even want to make the film. You did it because you were broke. It wasn't until later that it become one of you favorite film. But when you started the film you thought it was going to be terrible.

  • Perspectives about one's life can change over time. I am glad he has such a fond reverence for it now. I always have. Huey, Dewey and Louis were the pioneers. R2D2 and Wall-e are just imitatiors. Thank you Douglas Trumbull and Bruce Dern for Silent Running.

  • So much art is not appreciated at the time it's created. I'm glad Mr. Dern is around for some of the accolades.
