Just wanted to let you know that I picked up a lightspeed Zulu headset after seeing your review. It is working nicely. The noise reduction is a great step up from the old ( as in original 1999
) Dave Clarks that have served me so well over the last decade. I find the weight difference from my old set to be amazing! As a flight instructor I do a lot of flying so the investment in my hearing health will be worth it.
HONY FUCKING SHIT!! $850 for a freaking headset!!! I don't care if its "bla bla bla high qulaity bla bla bla" that is way to over priced for a heatset, im using $10 headseat and the sound qulaity is prefect. For the price of that head set I could buy 2 PS3s or 4 XBOX360s or a computer or 17 $50 headsets (and $50 for a headset is allready overpriced)
Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. That $10 headset you use for XBOX or PS3 will be useless in an aircraft. Re: This headset is NOT designed for gaming/casual use. It's for aviation, where these things make an incredible difference.
Apparently you dont fly much. I fly an average of 33 hrs a week flying pipeline patrol. All of that flying is in a 182, so it's noisy all the time. That "overpriced" ANR headset is worth it's weight in gold to someone who actually flies more than an hour or two a month. Overpriced to you, maybe, but to those of us who fly for a living, and want to be able to still hear 20 years from now WITHOUT hearing aids, it's a different story.
I was disappointed that you didn't compare the overall noise reduction to other headsets. Who cares how much reduction comes from the ANR, what really matters is how much noise makes it to your ear. How much noise makes it to your ear compared to the Bose?
Just to clarify, when I talk about the ANR of a headset I am really refering to the total passive and active reduction of the headset. I spend very little time examining a headset with the ANR turned off. What is important is the total reduction. Both the Zulu and the Bose are the quietest headsets available on the market. That includes comparisons with all passive and active headsets.
In addition to being in a flight club and access to more traditional aircraft, I fly a very LOUD LSA with a Rotax 503. I tried just about everything to get a good noise canceling mic. (it's easy to get comfort on the earphones) This headset by far beats the DC and Bose X headsets I tried. In fact I can make bluetooth cellphone calls from my noisy cockpit and people can barely tell I'm in an airplane.
Just got my headset in today! It is great, and I'll tell that in my oppinion it is much more comfortable than the Bose. The ANR is great, probably just as good as the bose if not better. The audio quality is top notch due to the FRC and bass/trebel boost features. I would have to say it is the best high end headset you can get!
Compared to the bose
Price: Cheaper
Features: More than the bose: (bluetooth, front row center, cell phone/mp3 player input)
I found the Lightspeed comparable to Bose on ANR. The weight of the Zulu is about 1.5 ounces heavier than Bose. Even with the extra weight the Zulu was still very comfortable. I put a lot of emphasis on comfort though. I would rather have a Louder, comfortable headset than a Quieter, UNcomfortable headset.
I have the Zulu in stock for the moment (limited supply), use the promotional code ZULU when checking out to get free shipping on the Zulu headset.
Thanks Dave for the review, I am very interested in the Zulu. What do you mean by "I put a lot of emphasis on comfort though. I would rather have a Louder, comfortable headset than a Quieter, UNcomfortable headset"? Are you saying that the Bose is more or less comfortable than the Zulu?
The comfort of the headset depends on the individual. Trying on headsets is like trying on shoes. One that is comfortable for me may not be comfortable for you. Nobody can give a review and tell you that you will find the headset comfortable, it is too subjective. I find both the Bose and the Zulu very comfortable. Which one is more comfortable for you? Well, I can't answer that. Only you can.
Order the headset. If you are not happy with it, I have a 30 day return policy.
"that is way to over priced for a heatset"
TOO. T-O-O. If you can't spell "too", log off and get some remedial literacy classes. Pathetic.
And while we're at it:
overpriced

Are there any regulations with reguards to using anr while in training?
popl222 1 year ago
@popl222 You can use the Lightspeed Zulu in flight training. The FAA does not have any regulations limiting the use of ANR.

Why is this headset NOT TSO'd yet, I really want to have one!
cironar 1 year ago
@cironar My understanding is that the bluetooth feature prevents the headset from complying with the TSO.

Only headset I have tried that completely blocks out the noisy Beaver on take-off... Worth more than its weight in gold!!!

I tried on both the Bose and the Zulu and I think the Zulu is the right decision for me. I will definitely be purchasing within a month.

What type of aircraft do you use that headset in?

His B777 on Flight simulator!

Clearly you've never been in a light aircraft if you're talking in terms of playstations and XBOXes. Stick with microsoft flight sim mate.
