Dragon age 1 is more realistic than 2, and it also has slower paced (more d&d traditional styled) combat. This is practically the only reason people dislike dragon age two. Because it isn't so heavily focused on d&d, and is more action oriented. I think it was a wise move. Dragon age 2 is set in the same world as one so playing the first would help.
