Lot's of excellent playing by some of the best players we have. Why do people keep comparing band to another, especially with Jazz & Fusion. We have a whole lot of Genres flowing together here, no one should categorize or chastise this because is not like "Something Else" , Everyone has favorites and prefers some things more than others. Bashing this makes no sense, if you do like this - Move on to what you enjoy.
I know this is the main project of Tetsuo, I mean, Dennis & Greg both are great but definitely Tetsuo is the star here, he rocks totally!!!. Doubtless, he's one of my favourite on bass in the world by far!.
you mean slipknot has more in common with these guys. lol... dream theatre? srry. they are great musicians. but they arent quite on the same level as greg howe and the bunch. musicians like these are in and exclusive class of thier own. slipknot and dream theatre just cant hang with them... they are a heck of alot better skill wise than many other mainstream groups. ill give them that.
I agree. Although Slipknot still doesn't come close. As for Dream Theater, well, I used to totally love them until I realized just how utterly pretentious they've become.
Mike Portnoy, for example, is an excellent drummer, but the guy just can't play anything unless he's got a fucking 18-bar drum fill for every four measures of solid beat. It's annoying.
@issofunky Your rambling makes me annoyed, compare this to any 70's fusion (Mahavishnu, Stanley Clarke, Cobham) and it's almost identical. Go back to school fool!
Congratulations you have proven with your comment that you know nothing about music
The musicians here are at least on the same Level as Dream Theater, The Bass Player and the drummer are even better musicians then John Myung and Mike Portnoy
I bet you only listened to the first Minute and you decided Oh its a relentless note flood
Thats like saying Liquid Tension Experiment are just notes
They're all magnificient musicians...but this piece just sounds like a charade. Turn your head away from the screen, just listen to the music...and let's see how long it takes until you push the stop-button
@Joncalarvo I'm not sure what a "charade" sounds like. But I think you're in the minority on this one. This "piece" is also on 2 fantastic albums (1 studio, 1 live) that sold really well in the jazz fusion community. Nothing to look at there. No stop button necessary.
@Joncalarvo one reason for that is that the sound quality in this video is bad and the instruments overlie each other. i have heared a better version before with good quality. sound like another universe.
@Joncalarvo Personally I actually ripped my copy of the DVD onto my PC and converted the album as I couldn't get hold of the CD, just so I could listen to tunes like this on my mp3 player.
@Joncalarvo well since the song title is "Brain Storm" it makes sense that there is a lot going on! it is a storm in my brain caused by these magnificent musicians that are creating a hurricane in my brain and I'm as happy as can be.
@misterguti14 Finally, intelligent life on Earth! I saw some negative comments about the bass line, but the fact here is that it doesn't matter if you liked how it sounds or not, because it's FREAKING AWESOME either way. Even with the bad recording quality, I heard it quite well. This is another level of music and it doesn't need to be "easy-listening" all the time, 'cause sometimes it's just about exploring different skills from the instrument and the musician. Congrats for recognizing that ;]
@branden623 i was thinking marcus.as much as i love both marcus and victor,i don't think neither wants a piece of tetsuo lol!!!!!! this guy is absolutely incredible
@branden623 Tetsuo, easily. Much more creative, in my opinion. Plus Tetsuo has played with Howe before where Howe plays songs that he recorded with Wooten... And Sakurai plays them effortlessly. But really, it's just personal taste as they are both top of the class when it comes to bass. It's cool to finally see Sakurai getting popular though. Years ago you would only hear his name on select few bass forums and such. From like 2000ish hes been getting a lot popular.
@PaulHanafinMusic Hi Paul! Judging by your channel you're the Paul Hanafin based in Darlo? This is Dave from the BMus!!! Hope you're well. I agree with your point like, but musicians like this don't just play this self-indulgent stuff. Dennis Chambers (as im sure you know) has the deepest pocket of any drummer i've ever heard, and Greg Howe can play melodies (every now and again!). This song is no doubt just a technical exercise, but you have to applaud the effort and work that's gone in to it.
@dave90mckeague No song is just a "technical exercise", I'm sure you would insult these great men just by suggesting such a thing. They've stretched their physical limitations only to make the MUSIC that they hear and feel deep down in their soul.
@hojima STFU and stop posting on my video, you retard. You're obviously trying to pick a fight with me so you're the immature one. Either enjoy the music or go fuck yourself.
@thecool9 Nevermind. The comment I responded to was 9 months old, but you still don't seem any less a hostile person, though I'm sure my declaration that something "crawled up your ass" wasn't the least inflammatory thing on my part.
@toppoxpocky for it to be "racism" it would have to imply some sort of discrimination... which it does not. you shouldn't just throw that term around wildly...
he's using the Thumb Technique of Victor Wooten, there's no groove in it, but it surely is vigorous and fast. what's to commend is that he's using a six stringed bass, which is, by experience, so hard to pop on, especially on the D and G string, and precise strength is required for the C string. the displacement of his downbeat is not in-sync with the drums, and to be honest, the lines are not Geddy Lee clear. but he surely is one of the best bassist out there. I salute you!
the is great pocket and soloing at it's best for a group of musicians. Everyone nails there part. They are together when they should be and when they go on there own....each musicians shuts it down. Great performance.
Tetsuo is a true master of bass, and this bass line is both killer and insane!!! I mean to be able to hold up that bass line for almost 9 minutes ......man, that's outstanding!!!
I have been there before, I have enough endurance, but I cut my index finger in 2 places after I was done. The scary part was I did not know it was bleeding until after I looked down and the string was slightly red, hahaha.
im pretty sure hes not too dissapointed...i mean...come on...not only is he gonna play in front of thousands of people...but hes probably gonna get a shit load of money....thats what session musicians do
Complexity is relative. If you have a simple mind that freaks out when you hear a typical noob playing church modes against simple 1 and 2 chord vamps, then you think the noob (aka Vai) is playing "complex music". I on the other hand, have evolved past this noodishness due to my chronology.
As I look at myself today, I cannot believe that I once though Santana (1974) was the shit! I get the feeling that you'll see what I'm saying once your whiskers turn a little grey. LOL!
osensei2987- Look, calling Vai a noob is just ridiculous. The Fire Garden Suite and the pieces he wrote for Metropole Orkest are deep pieces. No, he doesn't play through Coltrane changes on his tunes, but that isn't what he does. Howe's version of "Giant Steps" turns the solo into a one chord vamp; so does that mean he isn't saying anything on it? You are right, complexity is relative. Howe does some complex stuff. But Vai a noob? Sorry, dude. I read your posts. Your argument doesn't hold up.
the truth is that none of us is even half good as vai or howe that he can comment on wich one is better...they're both great, even if different...u cannot say vai is not good just because he plays different stuff...this is so immature...and not even dare to compare him to flea or justin timberlake!!
..can't we just all agree that these are great musicians making great music??..though i do wish howe would've done something more melodically interesting in 3:17-4:01..tetsuo definitely still has those funky solos since his casiopea days..
shredicon... i think u prefer vai because he has a more rock/metal type of vibe.. I like greg howe's playing better because he twists those time signatures so hard.. vai sounds great..but howe sounds more mature..my personal opinion only.I am dan. vocalist for SIMPLE EXPERIMENT.. 3rd place asian beat competition 2003
Greg Howe is from that class of shredders that came out in the late 90's -- came out along with Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie, Malmsteen, and those guys.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I, for one, vote that we STOP using the word "jazz" to describe this note-fodder onslaught.
THIS has FAR FAR FAR more in common with Slipknot
then it does with Coltrane or even Frank Gambale
.....the ONLY thing "jazz" in this group
relates back to a relentless rehash of
a Dream Theater & Steve Vai
AND BOTH those groups are still far better then ...this relentless note-flood.

..can't we just all agree that these are great musicians making great music??..though i do wish howe would've done something more melodically interesting in 3:17-4:01..tetsuo definitely still has those funky solos since his casiopea days..

shredicon... i think u prefer vai because he has a more rock/metal type of vibe.. I like greg howe's playing better because he twists those time signatures so hard.. vai sounds great..but howe sounds more mature..my personal opinion only.I am dan. vocalist for SIMPLE EXPERIMENT.. 3rd place asian beat competition 2003

I'm new to the jazz fusion (or whatever) genre. Where can you find stuff like this?
yamamato44 3 years ago
search up bands like casiopea, t-square, and level 42..you'll find a lot of excellent music...can't go wrong with casiopea...

Im sure Howe was a shredder once?
Just imagine if Vai had taken that solo break...
Sweet track though.

Greg Howe is from that class of shredders that came out in the late 90's -- came out along with Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie, Malmsteen, and those guys.
