  • Gadd is the man. Simply and Truly.

  • When I watch this man, he makes me want to just throw away my drumsticks...throw them right in the garbage.

  • @Skyjuice70 I lol'd

  • @Skyjuice70 you know...i hear this a lot, from anyone who watches any good musician play. people just claim they want to give up. i hope you or anyone else isn't serious. that seems ridiculous, it just makes me want to play more, honestly...when i see shit like this.

  • Where's the Latina doin' her groove thing?

  • If you look up the word, "GROOVE" in the dictionary you'll see a picture of Steve Gadd.

  • i already had the opportunity to see this great man doing a workshop , he is amazing :D

  • he sorta looks like Michael Jackson

  • 4 Sticks

    check it

    watch?v=UIxWyIWMCcQ

  • Simply awesome!

  • basically the four sticks add extra 'accudental' rebound to the beat just by hitting a drum or cymbal as you would with two sticks. it's actually been done before by mallet players in drum corps, though. the only difference is that mallet players can control each individual stroke with some practice.

  • in ht e real song, John Bohnam actually used four sticks (hences the name of the song '' Four Sticks). i think thee extra two sticks add a little extra to the beat, but im not sure what......

  • ... This makes me feel like I'm walking through the amazon O_O

  • Ok, what the hell is he doing with 4 sticks? All of this could have been done with 2. I dont understand exactly what he is doing that makes 4 sticks....special in his case.

  • @IrelevantLives4U what makes hitting a piece of wood or stretched cowskin or plastic or a piece of metal interesting? its percussion. every time he hits 2 sticks against a drum, you hear the sticks hit each other. thats percussion. the whole point is to get the sound of the sticks hitting each other and also make every hit sound like a flam.

  • you know what's sad? it's almost like some people sit on their computer and look for videos that they don't like so they can click the dislike button. a video like this shouldn't have any dislikes. nobody's being insulted, no one's getting their feelings hurt. the only reason you would dislike this is cuz you're jealous or don't like steve gadd and is drumming. in either case, instead of taking the time to dislike, DON'T WATCH IT.

  • this is in theory the late in the evening groove but on lite he keeps quarter notes on the soc cymbal

  • that beat in 1:35 is amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kalodiomenos13 Its called a mozambique. :) pae04b is a guys channel who teaches this exact sticking

  • @PurpleSn00zer thank you very much my friend !

  • RLRLRRLRLRRLRRLL

  • AH MA ZING ! ! !

  • It's not often that I dance, and even less often to a drum solo. This is funky!

  • thanks for that...bonham is also a genius. too good!

  • the four sticks is meant to have the effect of more than one drummer playing. he mentions it on a vid like this one. I think he's a genius. he has such awesome timing. too good!

  • @jorbv8 not to burst your bubble but bonham i think did this first, you can see footage of him in mody dick on "the song remains the same".

  • the four sticks is meant to have the effect of more than one drummer playing. he mentions it on a vid like this one. I think he's a genius. he has such awesome timing. too good

  • So what's the point of the four sticks?

  • Really let's grow up and learn together! Step outside and smoke yourself a jay.

  • this is the Groove from "late in the evening" by Paul Simon ....or at least this is his technique

  • @83DrumProdigy That's what I was just thinking--love that song! :)

  • Oh damn. This whole time I've not been using enough sticks. That was the problem along.

  • I've watched this video over and over and over again. It never fails to inspire me!

  • SHITHOLES DON'T STINK IF YOU KNOW

HOW TO WASH THEM RIGHT!! I'M THE

    KING OF CLEAN SHITHOLE!!!

  • THHHHEEEEEEE GREATEST!!!!!!!! WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!!!

There were GREATS but he has mastered the style of ALL OF THE GREATS

    which makes him THE GREATEST

  • Opinions are like arseholes in that everyones got one and they stink.

  • I'm sorry guys but some of the comments on here are deeply saddening. Why can people not draw the line between friendly debate and simply asserting you're theory knowledge for no other reason than to stroke you're own ego? and as for the metal vs jazz debate? rediculous! extreme metal playing is based on power, speed and endurance whereas we all know jazz/fusion comes down to technuiqe and theory. BOTH require feel and to knock either is an admission of non understanding.ps Gadd is the man!

  • @nailedurmum01 There is truly now two types of drummer's, One consists of a certain Ego and Arrogance, and the other is considered the "Nerd" the one who truly recognizes the intricacies of each and every diddle and note a drummer can play, I am not making an example of myself but a vague description is I am a very humbled teenage drummer and hope others can go off my example.

  • @rocknrollman123 Well said mate

  • @nailedurmum01 i agree with everything except for the technique part. metal drumming is just as much about technique as jazz drumming is. any real, good, metal drummer will know his rudiments just as well as a jazzer.

  • @nailedurmum01 At last a very good comment, thank you!

  • fuck he's nutty. This groove is wicked.

  • Clinics are for sick people. Great musicians don't do clinics, no need to when everyone comes to to the concerts and the albums and bootlegs cna't meet supply and demand. I'm really opinionated and I think Gadd over rated, but hey an opinion's like an asshole . . . everyone's got one! It was late in the evening, I can hear owls crying in the night . . .

  • @Earthdogbonzo3 i think that is completely wrong to say that great musicians don't do clinics because a lot of them do. Its good to give back knowledge.Going to concerts is for entertainment not education. Plus you can buy books and videos but there is nothing like being there with a master. Also tell any top musician that gadd is overrated and you'll get laughed at, but hey like you said everyone is entitled to there opinions.

  • @julianisdope In the realms of art and music, I would be circumspect in attaching the label "wrong". What gives back results to one, fails for another. While Mr. Gadd is without question a technical master, I find his emotion flat and his grooves clinical. What we need are venues all across the country and every town that allow all local musicians to jam and interact freely so that there can be a rensaissance in music. Teaching, studying-yes. To learn the magic in the spells requires more.

  • @Earthdogbonzo3 good point man, i completely agree with you about the renaissance thing because music is so fucking garbage nowadays. But c'mon gadd is all about the groove dude! Its the complete opposite, he isn't the most technical drummer but man he has so much feel its rather scary.

  • @julianisdope All that i'm say'in bout gadd is that he's not my particular cup of tea cause i find im kinda flat emotion/wise and his playing "clinical". that's my take on it. whatever it is that steve does, it has never grabbed my imagination or set me on musical fire. maybe it's the aries thing he's got going on-i dunno, maybe in utah there's an answer. RLRRLLRLRRLRLLRRLRLL! 1e an 2an duh 3an.

  • I wonder why he doesn't do any lateral or independent strokes.

  • I wonder why he doesn't do any lateral or independent strokes with the sticks.

  • Like being at the Rio Carnival all over again.

  • Now that is a solid groove by a phenomenal player.

  • what's wrong with my legs? they won't stop moving..... argh! the beat's got me!

  • why does he need four? what musical benefit does that have on this groove? lol, i don't see it xD

    very lovely groove though

  • @Dreva I'm not sure how you don't hear it, but it creates the illusion that there are multiple drummers, at least from where I'm sitting. I suspect that's the point.

  • @Dreva It makes each stroke sound a little like a flam, and thickens everything up. It gives a fuller, smoother sound. Its a little hard to tell because there's so much room noise in this video.

  • Sounds like Through A Moment In Mind AKA The Tale Of The Divine Oblivion.

  • 5+5+3+3 = 16

  • @dickydom9 what not boring then? slipknot?

  • @Quaby2 bert jansch, cunt

  • @dickydom9 bert jansch is amazing

  • BORING

  • @dickydom9 UR STILL A DICK....

  • Geez. He sounds like a whole fucking marching band playing. Unbelievable.

  • boring

  • @dickydom9 I SEE WHY UR NAME IS DICK COZ UR A DICK TO SAY SUCH A THING...WHAT DO U DO FOR A LVING DO U PLAY ONLY DRUMS & FEED UR FAMILY FROM JUST THAT....I BET U DONT....DICKHEAD...

  • @PRAISEDRUM check my new comment, then learn some grammar ! CUNT .

  • No matter how hard you practice, you can never get his feel. I try hard people... FML

  • **SPOILER**

this video will automatically control your brain

and makes your head bob for less than three minutes

groovebeatgasmic monkey might wake inside -avoid dancing

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay People like you probably make John Henry Bonham roll around in his grave.

  • youwishyoucouldplay=spam

  • @kranen1 You expect anyone to take the word of you? An eighteen year old non playing twerp. What have you done kid? We all know you can't play squat. Keep at it . Get back to someone when you are etertaining. Ok sport?

  • Comment removed

  • @kranen1 Wow. You are going downhill w/each passing post/ Portnoy? Sucks camel flea infested ballsack after it dripped loads into his mouth.

  • Comment removed

  • @kranen1 Metal is shit as far as music goes. The bottom of the barrel and easiest shit to play.

  • Comment removed

  • @kranen1 Who cares if Rob Halford sounds like a choked duck? Metal is dead twerp. It's only for teeny boppers and non players. jazz fusion is the shit. You can't even begin to understand it.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @kranen1 Sure it does twerp. And Halford? He just doesn't sound good. Fuck what pavarotti says anyway. Hahahahahaha. Nobody on the street knows fucking halford?

Are you kidding me. \A metal never was an now a has been for sure. Good luck w/that And you are the bluesless souless non player twerpy...hahahaha

  • @realdrummer110 Doesn't sound good? Hahaha. Sure I play, I don't think you do though. You're probably just some "Know it all" that actually doesn't know shit about music. You are pathetic and worthless. Your at the at the autumn of your meaningless life. I know you still live in the late 60's woodstock, but hey, that time is over. You're here now. An old man with almost nothing to live for anymore. The retirement home and adult diapers is what you have too look forward to =)

  • @kranen1 Alright, man. Do you get music? I stand in judgement of no one's musical taste, but to demean a different style of music is stupid. If you want to talk about jazz sucking, let me tell you this: you wouldn't have METAL without JAZZ. I remember when I thought metal was everything, but then I grew up, and I realized that there is other stuff out there. Don't hate dude, music is subjective, but it is factual that without jazz there wouldn't be metal. Sorry man, that's just a factual lesson

  • @Vegito515 I just kinda fell to that guys level you know, wasn't to serious actually xD I know of what you speak of.

  • Some people tend to think they can compensate their lack of feeling, and some times tone deafness with studying alot of theory. It wont do any good. To play great guitar for example is all about feeling. Ofc you need to know some theory, but the great feeling and phrasing is much more important. You must also be creative.

  • @kranen1 Okay, so you addressed one of the points I made. Now how about addressing the other?

  • @Vegito515 I know what it is, but I don't like chromatic stuff, I like things in melody you know. Why jumping keys like that? Sounds weird xD When you change to another key, make sure it's a close related key instead, like common tone modulation :)

  • @kranen1 in history. Oh, and you want to talk about "knowing nothing about music"? Okay, how much do you know? Can you explain what a chromatic common tone modulation is without using Google to help you? Do you know what a lydian dominant is?

  • @Vegito515 Yeah, I do, but I'm no theory freak. I do know what's necessary though. I don't like Lydian scales. I guess I'm a pentatonic spammer sometimes, hehe. But I do play alot of different scales. Mostly minor scales, nothing like a good old sad solo =D I don't study much theory, I don't want to. I can hear which key I'm playing in and I key when I have to. Theory can make you a better player, everybody can learn theory, but not feeling.

  • @kranen1 tell Gadd to go play metall asswipe.

  • @kranen1

Yeah? Well, that mentality is WHY you play metal and jazzers play jazz!! Think about it.

  • Steve Godd

  • So good.......

  • omg great thanks for the upload

  • the full podcast is available at vic firth's website.

  • i´ve been watching drum videos for about 2 hours now, including amazing drummers I love listening to such as colaiuta, dennis chambers and many other "hall of fame" guys. But this is probably the first video (afte two hours!) that made me wanna dance. To me that´s where Gadd makes the difference.

  • This stuffs really basic. Nothing prophetic or out of the ordinary here, but he doesn't always have to rip to prove his talent.

  • watch the full vic firth podcast of this. he explains this and puts it to more stuff.

  • where can we see the full vic firth podcast of this?

  • how someone can get as good as steve gadd in one life time, is beyond me..

  • @elrojomuerto6x Dude, check out Mike Portnoy :P OR Aquiles Priester.

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice groove. You can really feel it, 5 stars

  • you clearly have a very narrow understanding of music

  • watch other steve gadd videos (this probably the worst) and watch nich barker videos and than say me who is better

  • I love Steve Gadd, but this is boring and repetitive. What a wast of 3 minutes of my life. Sorry, just stating my opinion.

  • I am sure you have wasted more time on things that are worse. If you like to call this a waste.

  • You are absolutely right and I bow my head to Steve Gadd as a legend, but this is just shit!

  • In addition to being a fantastic drummer, Steve Gadd has always born a resemblance to Rowan Atkinson (to me, anway).

  • Man i love GADD! Everytime i watch him, am always amaze. By the way, you cant compare Gad on any Drummer. Every drummer have their own style. i like Steve Gadd groove. and i learn a lot from him. the licks, the groove and style, now am using gadd techniques on my band. Mabuhay Steve Gadd. From Philippines

  • Wow

  • Steve kills it every time .I love all genre of drumming but Gadd is in my top five.

  • yes mister Steve Gadd.

    Dave weckl , Vinnie colaiuta,

Peppe Merolla dennis chambers, Peter erskine, those guys are the real deal

  • this rrdrums110 dude just goes to every Gadd video and complains about him. thats pretty pathetic.

  • @philmcflurry he is just a stupid

! he was doing the same on mike portnoy videos what a shame that guy must be and unemployed janitor!

  • @philmcflurry Haha, he's banned, but he was trolling Meshuggah as well.

  • is this when he was at chaffey in ontario ca? it looks alot like it. i was there.

  • Man thats a pure gadd riff! just type in gadd mozambique

  • ha ha ha ha

  • Not you AGAIN.

  • muito bom, dá pra fazer umas variações da hora. kkkkkk

    abraço.

  • What a groove......Awesome video......

  • fake what .clearly youve never been to a steve gadd show ive seen it live

    theres nothing fake about it

  • I agree. More people should catch on to this bro! They did a pretty good job but its hard to fool people like us : ) Well spotted bro!!! Catch ya flip side!!!!

  • you are just jealous

  • Oh please. It was done in front of an audience. Or did he pull a photoshop on them too?

  • I've always liked this. Is he employing the exact same sticking that he demonstrates on the rims when he moves to the drum kit?

  • No, its actually sweep picking. Basically, its a series of scales and modes played up and down the drum kit. Pretty awesome huh?!! Sweet bro!!

  • bow down to the master.

  • @MISSEDHERSIR John Henry Bonham.

  • I must have watched this video about 50 times! I LOVE it! I adore the way he nods his head as he feels the groove ;)

  • Does he donate blood? I'd get a transfusion... but,,, I'd probably still have to practice...

  • If only it was that easy...

  • @jddrums

if he's an organ donor, i want his.

  • the master of the foot splash

  • Tha' Master!

  • Mozambique, yes!!

  • Sticking is RxRL RRLR LRRL RRLL ...

  • What a brilliant man!

  • No body can groove like he does!

  • TRUE!!!!!!!

  • @benji0001 Only Bernard Purdie can, of course they are both demi-gods..... So i dont care which you prefer, as long as its one of these two hehe

  • and k custom cymbals :)

    very expensive !

    but worthy !

  • yeah pretty expensive but they make it worthy

  • wow, this is great

  • nice, but why do the extra sticks help?!?!

  • if you listen carefully, at some points the way he uses the sticks make it seem almost as if there are two drummers. You can really only hear it if you look away and listen only, dont watch.

  • listen to the song "late in the evening" by paul simon and you'll see why

  • he brought a lot of new in the modern drumming culture

  • Can someone tell me what kind of kit Gadd uses?

  • Yamaha

  • impresionante

  • the four sticks add that clicking sound you hear softly during the whole thing and it also puts a little more punch when you hit the drums.

  • the first 30 seconds is the mozambique sticking, is that right?

  • i think its only about the sound. like imitating four people at the same time

  • Did he explain why he's using four sticks? What's the advantage of that in this application.

  • what a beast!

  • he is fucking good, just buyed Steve Gadd Vic Firt sticks, the black sticks he's playing with

  • thoose are the worst sticks i've ever played with. the balance is weird:S

  • lol all the vic firt artist signature drumsticks are really bad.

  • The reason why it's called "Signature" sticks because it was designed to fit the "Artist"....Steve Gadd if you see some of his other videos, He mostly plays with the other end. It's just what style you play..I'm a 5A player but still searching for the perfect stick...

  • i love his sticks

  • I personally think those sticks are incredible.

Along with the Jack Dejohnette signature sticks. Those are my personal favorites.

  • haha same awful sticks

  • What do you think? He is STEVE GADD!

  • One of the best drummers ever!

  • Steve GOD

  • Gadd is God

  • That reverb in that room is crazy.
