@Skyjuice70 you know...i hear this a lot, from anyone who watches any good musician play. people just claim they want to give up. i hope you or anyone else isn't serious. that seems ridiculous, it just makes me want to play more, honestly...when i see shit like this.
basically the four sticks add extra 'accudental' rebound to the beat just by hitting a drum or cymbal as you would with two sticks. it's actually been done before by mallet players in drum corps, though. the only difference is that mallet players can control each individual stroke with some practice.
in ht e real song, John Bohnam actually used four sticks (hences the name of the song '' Four Sticks). i think thee extra two sticks add a little extra to the beat, but im not sure what......
Ok, what the hell is he doing with 4 sticks? All of this could have been done with 2. I dont understand exactly what he is doing that makes 4 sticks....special in his case.
@IrelevantLives4U what makes hitting a piece of wood or stretched cowskin or plastic or a piece of metal interesting? its percussion. every time he hits 2 sticks against a drum, you hear the sticks hit each other. thats percussion. the whole point is to get the sound of the sticks hitting each other and also make every hit sound like a flam.
you know what's sad? it's almost like some people sit on their computer and look for videos that they don't like so they can click the dislike button. a video like this shouldn't have any dislikes. nobody's being insulted, no one's getting their feelings hurt. the only reason you would dislike this is cuz you're jealous or don't like steve gadd and is drumming. in either case, instead of taking the time to dislike, DON'T WATCH IT.
the four sticks is meant to have the effect of more than one drummer playing. he mentions it on a vid like this one. I think he's a genius. he has such awesome timing. too good!

I'm sorry guys but some of the comments on here are deeply saddening. Why can people not draw the line between friendly debate and simply asserting you're theory knowledge for no other reason than to stroke you're own ego? and as for the metal vs jazz debate? rediculous! extreme metal playing is based on power, speed and endurance whereas we all know jazz/fusion comes down to technuiqe and theory. BOTH require feel and to knock either is an admission of non understanding.ps Gadd is the man!
@nailedurmum01 There is truly now two types of drummer's, One consists of a certain Ego and Arrogance, and the other is considered the "Nerd" the one who truly recognizes the intricacies of each and every diddle and note a drummer can play, I am not making an example of myself but a vague description is I am a very humbled teenage drummer and hope others can go off my example.
@nailedurmum01 i agree with everything except for the technique part. metal drumming is just as much about technique as jazz drumming is. any real, good, metal drummer will know his rudiments just as well as a jazzer.
Clinics are for sick people. Great musicians don't do clinics, no need to when everyone comes to to the concerts and the albums and bootlegs cna't meet supply and demand. I'm really opinionated and I think Gadd over rated, but hey an opinion's like an asshole . . . everyone's got one! It was late in the evening, I can hear owls crying in the night . . .
@Earthdogbonzo3 i think that is completely wrong to say that great musicians don't do clinics because a lot of them do. Its good to give back knowledge.Going to concerts is for entertainment not education. Plus you can buy books and videos but there is nothing like being there with a master. Also tell any top musician that gadd is overrated and you'll get laughed at, but hey like you said everyone is entitled to there opinions.
@julianisdope In the realms of art and music, I would be circumspect in attaching the label "wrong". What gives back results to one, fails for another. While Mr. Gadd is without question a technical master, I find his emotion flat and his grooves clinical. What we need are venues all across the country and every town that allow all local musicians to jam and interact freely so that there can be a rensaissance in music. Teaching, studying-yes. To learn the magic in the spells requires more.
@Earthdogbonzo3 good point man, i completely agree with you about the renaissance thing because music is so fucking garbage nowadays. But c'mon gadd is all about the groove dude! Its the complete opposite, he isn't the most technical drummer but man he has so much feel its rather scary.
@julianisdope All that i'm say'in bout gadd is that he's not my particular cup of tea cause i find im kinda flat emotion/wise and his playing "clinical". that's my take on it. whatever it is that steve does, it has never grabbed my imagination or set me on musical fire. maybe it's the aries thing he's got going on-i dunno, maybe in utah there's an answer. @realdrummer110 Doesn't sound good? Hahaha. Sure I play, I don't think you do though. You're probably just some "Know it all" that actually doesn't know shit about music. You are pathetic and worthless. Your at the at the autumn of your meaningless life. I know you still live in the late 60's woodstock, but hey, that time is over. You're here now. An old man with almost nothing to live for anymore. The retirement home and adult diapers is what you have too look forward to =)
@kranen1 Alright, man. Do you get music? I stand in judgement of no one's musical taste, but to demean a different style of music is stupid. If you want to talk about jazz sucking, let me tell you this: you wouldn't have METAL without JAZZ. I remember when I thought metal was everything, but then I grew up, and I realized that there is other stuff out there. Don't hate dude, music is subjective, but it is factual that without jazz there wouldn't be metal. Sorry man, that's just a factual lesson
Some people tend to think they can compensate their lack of feeling, and some times tone deafness with studying alot of theory. It wont do any good. To play great guitar for example is all about feeling. Ofc you need to know some theory, but the great feeling and phrasing is much more important. You must also be creative.
@Vegito515 I know what it is, but I don't like chromatic stuff, I like things in melody you know. Why jumping keys like that? Sounds weird xD When you change to another key, make sure it's a close related key instead, like common tone modulation :)
@kranen1 in history. Oh, and you want to talk about "knowing nothing about music"? Okay, how much do you know? Can you explain what a chromatic common tone modulation is without using Google to help you? Do you know what a lydian dominant is?
@Vegito515 Yeah, I do, but I'm no theory freak. I do know what's necessary though. I don't like Lydian scales. I guess I'm a pentatonic spammer sometimes, hehe. But I do play alot of different scales. Mostly minor scales, nothing like a good old sad solo =D I don't study much theory, I don't want to. I can hear which key I'm playing in and I key when I have to. Theory can make you a better player, everybody can learn theory, but not feeling.
i´ve been watching drum videos for about 2 hours now, including amazing drummers I love listening to such as colaiuta, dennis chambers and many other "hall of fame" guys. But this is probably the first video (afte two hours!) that made me wanna dance. To me that´s where Gadd makes the difference.

FAKE!!! Look at 1.27 and you can CLEARLY see this was butchered with Beat Detective, Photo Shop, Melodyne and Microsoft Word. Done pretty badly too, the frame rate is sketchy at the best of times. Sweet vid bro!!!! Thaks for posting!
I agree. More people should catch on to this bro! They did a pretty good job but its hard to fool people like us : ) Well spotted bro!!! Catch ya flip side!!!!
if you listen carefully, at some points the way he uses the sticks make it seem almost as if there are two drummers. You can really only hear it if you look away and listen only, dont watch.
The reason why it's called "Signature" sticks because it was designed to fit the "Artist"....Steve Gadd if you see some of his other videos, He mostly plays with the other end. It's just what style you play..I'm a 5A player but still searching for the perfect stick...
Gadd is the man. Simply and Truly.

Oh please. It was done in front of an audience. Or did he pull a photoshop on them too?

I've always liked this. Is he employing the exact same sticking that he demonstrates on the rims when he moves to the drum kit?
radiosant 2 years ago
No, its actually sweep picking. Basically, its a series of scales and modes played up and down the drum kit. Pretty awesome huh?!! Sweet bro!!

I must have watched this video about 50 times! I LOVE it! I adore the way he nods his head as he feels the groove ;)

nice, but why do the extra sticks help?!?!
olly543 2 years ago 3
if you listen carefully, at some points the way he uses the sticks make it seem almost as if there are two drummers. You can really only hear it if you look away and listen only, dont watch.

listen to the song "late in the evening" by paul simon and you'll see why

the four sticks add that clicking sound you hear softly during the whole thing and it also puts a little more punch when you hit the drums.
DrPepperJKM 2 years ago
the first 30 seconds is the mozambique sticking, is that right?
MasterDrumma 2 years ago
i think its only about the sound. like imitating four people at the same time
zerodensetzu 3 years ago
Did he explain why he's using four sticks? What's the advantage of that in this application.

he is fucking good, just buyed Steve Gadd Vic Firt sticks, the black sticks he's playing with
CrazyJ1357 3 years ago
thoose are the worst sticks i've ever played with. the balance is weird:S
nicklasnorling 3 years ago
lol all the vic firt artist signature drumsticks are really bad.
diexico 3 years ago
The reason why it's called "Signature" sticks because it was designed to fit the "Artist"....Steve Gadd if you see some of his other videos, He mostly plays with the other end. It's just what style you play..I'm a 5A player but still searching for the perfect stick...
hawaiianstylin 3 years ago
i love his sticks
brock786 3 years ago
I personally think those sticks are incredible.
Along with the Jack Dejohnette signature sticks. Those are my personal favorites.
