Much of the battle was hand to hand because naval warfare at the time still consisted largely of ramming ships and boarding them. The battle turned against the Ottomans when the Spanish managed to board and capture the Ottoman command ship Sultana beheading the commander Ali Pasha which destroyed Turkish moral. Also the Turks fought several 1 on 1 wars with Russia that they lost.

@199219931994S You do know the Battle of Lepanto was a naval battle and the Ottomans did use guns and cannons. Much of the battle was hand to hand because naval warfare at the time still consisted largely of ramming ships and boarding them. The battle turned against the Ottomans when the Spanish managed to board and capture the Ottoman command ship Sultana beheading the commander Ali Pasha which destroyed Turkish moral. Also the Turks fought several 1 on 1 wars with Russia that they lost.

@kahraman Europeans had 208 ships (and about 20,000 soldiers). Ottomans had 251 ships (and about 30,000 soldiers). It is nonetheless true that Europeans had better and more guns, since science in general was more advanced in Europe at time.
The only Europeans powers to take part in Lepanto was Italy, Spain (who contributed only few of their ships), and the tiny island of Malta. The Ottoman Empire was several times larger than all of them combined.

As I said this is was a naval war and you can see that number of guns the Holy League were around twice as many as of the Ottoman fleet's. I believe the number of men you are given are soldiers where as the number of sailors were about the same. Ship number alone does not say much, as the Holy League's ships were larger than the Ottoman Fleet's ships.

somehow the ottoman empire was alot like the us, in regards to being a melting pot of different cultures, and in regards to being multiple states joined under one banner... so if history repeats itself, it wont be long until the usa separates into multiple autonomous states. as far as i remember the founding fathers of the usa never meant for it to become a country, perhaps the were right all along

Ottoman empire was strong as long as their war machine was victorious. As they started to lose battles, as at Wiena of Hochim, whole empire was getting less and less strong. Poland and Austria, suported by rebels on the Balkans, at the end of 17th century manage to make the Ottomans too weak for going into new wars. It was the begining of Ottoman Empire end.
