Love to watch your project, that is the great wind turbine. Do you still hand out copies of the project, here in British Columbia wind might substitute my high electricity cost. I have a 1.5kW inverter that I used in my van with 225A alternator and was running 2 deep freezers size 22qfeet. Was able to run one for good 6 hours just off the 850 crank Amps car battery.

It looks like your rotor has 16 magnets on one side and 8 magnets on the other. Why? Also, they appear to be different shapes on either side?

each set of 2 coils are connected in series to make 3 phases. On this generator I have connected the generator in star which gives more voltage and less current. I could have connected it a number of ways. There are 8 magnets which create 4 pairs of poles. This makes a 4 pole feild. I used a plan found on the internet and therefore never bothered figuring out the timing of the magnets related to the coils. (Actually there are 16 magnets total because there is na identical rotor feild either side

No, I never recieved any money and I wasn't expecting any. What kind of stuff are you doing? Ive got a vertical shaft unit half built. I'll probably finish it this winter.

that's fantastic !! I'm thinking of taking a bit of a shortcut and using an alternator. any disadvantages to that ?

The disadvantage to an alternator is the efficiency. You must provide power to the field to create an electromagnet as oposed to the PMG which uses permanent magnets. I don't know what minimum speed an alternator needs to run at, but if you have to gear up you will also loose some efficiency. Other people have done it so I'm sure it will work

Can't remember. They are ferrite instead of rare earth. I think they cost about $25 for the whole set. I just purchased some good rare earth ones for about $70.

This one is 16 gauge. Works ok for my application, if you were after more than 300 watts or so I'd go up a size. Not due to over heating but do to the amount of power consumed. There are good sites with plans free on the internet.

If your thinking of making one, the generator should be sized to the turbine. I didn't understand this at first but lucked out and got a good match.

That's funny (about the arm). Do you have a good vertical design I could try? Vertical would simplify things alot.

There are lift types using aerofoils or drag types often using plain old PVC pipe, just search for "VAWT"

Look under "vawt-new vertical axis wind turbine" and check out that design. I wonder if one could run a cable-drive (like they use in weedeaters) to connect the vawt to the horizontal blade to boost it at low speeds?
