It was pure genius on senator Quayle's part to set the old geezer up like that; proving beyond all doubt just what a classless man bentsen really was.
@W2n1dowsx ... not sure what that means. Obviously, Kennedy wasn't perfect and he was learning on the job, but he stood against the generals and acted with coolness and poise during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he fully embraced civil rights by 1963, and he was turning a critical eye to the American commitment in Vietnam. Yes, he had increased it, but he was also more likely to deescalate it than his less secure successor, Lyndon Johnson. We'll never know, but ...
What's great is that Bentsen wasn't just able to make such a hilarious line against Quayle, he was able to maturely justify it in the face of Quayle's snivelling "don't be mean!!" reply.
Two things. First, that was kind of the point: Reagan said it about a Democrat (and it was a joke at that) and Bentsen turned it around against a Republican, and it wasn't a joke (unless you really think Reagan knew Jefferson.) Second, I don't think someone who can't spell "Bentsen" even though it's correct in most of the responses, and also don't know when to use "your" versus "you're," has the right to call anyone else an idiot.
@padguy1 You guys are both idiots. Reagan knowingly took his line from Bentsen. Reagan made his remark in 1992 about Clinton. This debate was in 1988.
Bentsen is typical of the left: arrogant, no good ideas, narcissistic, and a desire to spend, spend, spend the money you worked all year to earn. Fuck Bentsen. He's no Jack Kennedy!
@cincyblows You are a typical Republican. Constantly hammering at the "big spending" government, but lacking specifics about where to cut. Please state, in DETAIL, exactly WHAT you would cut to balance the federal budget. How about ag subsidies? They are one of the biggest wastes of money around, but Republicans refuse to consider touching them.
I am a Democrat, but I just cannot watch this anymore. I mean, I HURT for the guy, really do hurt for him. lt was like putting Barney Fife up against Robocop; Quayle had no chance at all and was TOTALLY over his head in this arena. It really says a lot more about GH Bush than about Quayle. Quayle was a total nincompoop, everyone knows that, and it's not his fault. But Bush was really a smart man, and he should not have been so insecure that he could not have chosen a competent running mate.
Qualye should have replied; Yes you are right Sen Benson, unlike the esteemed JFK I did not have numerous affairs as Prez cheating on my wife, I did not turn the White House into a Whore House (for Clinton insert Oval Office into Oral Office) and I did not escalate the war in Viet Nam or invade numerous Latin American countries or try to overthrow their regimes with help from the CIA.Yes Sen Benson you are right I am not JFK, thank God, and if I were you I would chose my friends more carefully.

Did Dan Quayle fund a botched invasion of Cuba, pushing them to communist dictatorship? Nope! Did Dan Quayle bring the world to the brink of nuclear war? Nope! Did Dan Quayle get himself shot? Nope! Correct you are Lloyd, Dan Quayle is not Jack Kennedy.
Seriously though, Quayle didn't judge himself a better politician than JFK, merely a more experienced one.

JayNicks10 and 3dartistguy are getting annoying. Bush wasn't as bad as people say he was but Clinton and Reagan were better. They both started out with low approvals but left with the 2nd(Bill) and 4th(Ron) highest approvals. Reagan created 21 million after 5 million were lost. plus that's still less than the 22.7 million that Clinton created. no jobs were lost under Clinton. Reagan was getting us out of a recession, but Clinton got us out of an even bigger one that had high unemployment.
@Rocketman19able hey man I kinda like what you wrote. I never said Bush was the worst ever, but I'm glad you like Clinton. and that you bring up that he created more jobs than reagan even did and that he got us out of an even bigger recession. what you need to understand is that the majority of jobs Ragan created were minimum wage jobs. One big difference between Reagan and Clinton, is Reagan RAISED the debt while Clinton LOWERED it.
@3dartistguy but before that, 5 million jobs were lost. (Hince the 10.8 % unemployment) so for a total, it's 16 million. And like Rocketman19able said, the "21 million" is still less than the 22.7 Million that Clinton created. Sure, you can blame the high unemployment on Carter all you want, but Clinton got us out of an even biger recession and ended up creating more jobs. these are facts.
Dude, he didn't cost anything. That was CARTER's Mess. Do you think policies change overnight? Reagan was strightening out Carter's mess and the resulting job growth created 21 million jobs. CLinton inherited Bush's mess for raising taxes...each president inherits the other's mess and soemtimes make a mess of their own, like Obama's spendthrift poilicies that haven't resulted in any job growth like the 787 trillion that we borrowed from the Chinese that we were promised would create jobs.
@3dartistguy Oh so it's Carter's fault that unemployment started going up a year and a half after he was out? Clinton was also cleaning up a big mess where unemployment was high after 12 years of trickled down economics. that's just one of the great things about Clinton's record. Unemployment NEVER went up and he ended up creating 22.7 million jobs.
3dartistguy needs to shut up and quit his bitching and arguing. he thinks that those false rumors about Dukakis were true, he thinks Bush Jr was a better President than Clinton, and he thinks 16 million is more than 22 million.
i wasnt around for the first bush administration but idk i could've stood quayle. it just seems to me that he walked around with a big ego and made little contribution to assist bush in any of his plans. all people have talked about since quayle left office was this debate, the "potatoe" incident, and his bashing of murphy brown (a ficitonal tv character) for having a child out of wedlock. meanwhile, bush was overlooking the persian gulf with not much help from his second in command.
@alexsuchapimp Actually Qualyle did win. This was the 1988 election between George H W Bush, Dan Quayle and Micheal Dukakis, Lloyd Bentsen. The republicans won this election.
@kraemer878 has much I do love the JFK, RFK and Teddy, Dan the man was right, he did have more experience then JFK in the senate and I bet a better member too
Quayle was an idiot and it didn't take a genius to realize that if Bush was killed or died in office, this country would have been fucked. Experience isn't the only thing necessary to running a fucking country. JFK was an enigmatic and all around strong personality. Quayle was a little bitch as shown by his response here. Bentsen 2012.
If Lloyd Bentsen had been the presidential candidate instead of Dukakis, would the Democrats have had a better chance? Like, if the roles had been reversed, being that Dukakis was up for vice president and Bentsen for president.
@Lamporre I'd think so. Bentsen certainly came off more seasoned and Presidential than did Dukakis, who didnt have much of a clue when it came to looking the part. Bentsen and Bush Sr had been political rivals in Texas so a debate between those two would have been very interesting to see. Incidentally, many have asked this same question and here's something to note--when the Electoral College met to formally submit their ballots, one elector actually DID flip the ticket. That says it all.
I agree that Dan Quayle was no Kennedy. He was many times better than any Kennedy! When Reagan got elected, the leftist media got caught off guard. Ever since, when a true conservative comes along, the media does everything they can to make them look as bad as possible. Quayle would have been a better conservative president than Reagan. Today, the only true conservative out there is Ron Paul and Sara Palin and once again the media does all they can to make them look bad.
True enough, when JFK was around it was an entirely different world in regard to the press, I mean only three pictures out of thousands picture FDR in a wheelchair, so if it wasnt something volunteered, it wasnt covered. At the very least Kennedy wouldnt have been nearly so blatant about it. Even if he had I still do not see how that bears on his ability to lead a nation. Many Presidents were adulterers, as Gary Hart so accurately pointed out when he reentered the 88 race.
Lloyd Bentsen was a pompous, rich texas asshole who pretended to be a liberal. Gimmie a break. Thank God he and Dukakis didn't get elected. Vice Pres Quayle was not smooth but despite these bullshit debate moments, he served well and was an honorable guy.
What was uncalled for, was Quayle's use of the familiar use of "Jack" - that is reserved for close friends and family and Bentsen was right to bitch slap him for attempting to pull it off.
This is a classic! I loved it when I saw it first in 1988 and I love it just as much today. Trying to compare himself to JFK,he deserved that putdown.
@aitraining Other than your assertion, where is your evidence that he was "fed" this line. All I can see from your post is you didn't like Bentsten, and that you probably don't like liberals.
Must suck to see a BLACK PRESIDENT and be powerless to do anything about it. Just picture all those people cashing their government checks LOL

One big difference between Reagan and Clinton, is Reagan RAISED the debt while Clinton LOWERED it.
jayNicks10 6 months ago 2
When are you EVER going to admit that Reagan created 21 million jobs??? These are facts, LIVE WITH IT!
3dartistguy 6 months ago
@3dartistguy but before that, 5 million jobs were lost. (Hince the 10.8 % unemployment) so for a total, it's 16 million. And like Rocketman19able said, the "21 million" is still less than the 22.7 Million that Clinton created. Sure, you can blame the high unemployment on Carter all you want, but Clinton got us out of an even biger recession and ended up creating more jobs. these are facts.
jayNicks10 6 months ago 4
Dude, he didn't cost anything. That was CARTER's Mess. Do you think policies change overnight? Reagan was strightening out Carter's mess and the resulting job growth created 21 million jobs. CLinton inherited Bush's mess for raising taxes...each president inherits the other's mess and soemtimes make a mess of their own, like Obama's spendthrift poilicies that haven't resulted in any job growth like the 787 trillion that we borrowed from the Chinese that we were promised would create jobs.
3dartistguy 6 months ago

Oh, right, Quayle.

@jazzyhap He was running with HW Bush you dumbass. He didn't win anything
alexsuchapimp 7 months ago
@alexsuchapimp Actually Qualyle did win. This was the 1988 election between George H W Bush, Dan Quayle and Micheal Dukakis, Lloyd Bentsen. The republicans won this election.
Bcroft39 7 months ago
@Bcroft39 yes, I know. But Dan Quayle didn't win, Bush did. It's not like presidential ballot had a checkbox saying "Dan Quayle for Vice President"

Quayle was an idiot he should never had been vice president who the hell does he think he is! comparing himself to JFK
kraemer878 7 months ago 5
@kraemer878 has much I do love the JFK, RFK and Teddy, Dan the man was right, he did have more experience then JFK in the senate and I bet a better member too
yot5000 7 months ago
@yot5000 Dan were in the congress for a total of 12 years (4 in the house of representatives and 8 in the senate)
John F. Kennedy were in the congress for a total of 13 years (6 in the house of representatives and 7 in the senate)
So when Dan says he has more experience in congress than JFK it is a lie.

Isn't it sad that there were enough Republicans in the audience to make a bigger applause for Quayle's whining than Bentsen's telling it like it is?
Lamporre 7 months ago
Quayle was an idiot and it didn't take a genius to realize that if Bush was killed or died in office, this country would have been fucked. Experience isn't the only thing necessary to running a fucking country. JFK was an enigmatic and all around strong personality. Quayle was a little bitch as shown by his response here. Bentsen 2012.

@twelch621 Give us your assessment on the brilliant one Biden or is that bite me? Even the Generals realize that our current leaders are idiots.
dwschultzfla 7 months ago
@dwschultzfla No I agree with you, Biden scares me.
twelch621 4 months ago
If Lloyd Bentsen had been the presidential candidate instead of Dukakis, would the Democrats have had a better chance? Like, if the roles had been reversed, being that Dukakis was up for vice president and Bentsen for president.
Lamporre 8 months ago
@Lamporre I'd think so. Bentsen certainly came off more seasoned and Presidential than did Dukakis, who didnt have much of a clue when it came to looking the part. Bentsen and Bush Sr had been political rivals in Texas so a debate between those two would have been very interesting to see. Incidentally, many have asked this same question and here's something to note--when the Electoral College met to formally submit their ballots, one elector actually DID flip the ticket. That says it all.

maxpowers518 8 months ago
I agree that Dan Quayle was no Kennedy. He was many times better than any Kennedy! When Reagan got elected, the leftist media got caught off guard. Ever since, when a true conservative comes along, the media does everything they can to make them look as bad as possible. Quayle would have been a better conservative president than Reagan. Today, the only true conservative out there is Ron Paul and Sara Palin and once again the media does all they can to make them look bad.
adamandalyssa 8 months ago

Vice Pres Quayle was not smooth but despite these bullshit debate moments, he served well and was an honorable guy.

dan quayle got a lot of butt hurt

What was uncalled for, was Quayle's use of the familiar use of "Jack" - that is reserved for close friends and family and Bentsen was right to bitch slap him for attempting to pull it off.
