Thank you so much! You have the best tutorials I've been able to find online. I REALLY wish I could afford your online classes, but alas, I am stuck in free tutorial world. You've made my journey MUCH easier :)
Hey! I think your tutorials are so great, I just can't seem to keep my hoop from going to my knees, and it is getting painful! I have been trying for a few weeks and I am not sure how to keep it above my knee. I rotate my leg with the hoop but it doesn't seem to help. How can I keep this from happening? Thank you!!!
@Taalliesiin I have exactly the same problem and I cant manage to keep it up either. Ive been practising and practising and I havent gotten anywhere. Ive probably watched this video about 10 times now to try and fihgure out what Ive been doing wrong and Im still not sure....
I've been hooping for a year now and whenever i learn a new trick it looks choppy and does not look smooth at all. This trick is no exception. Learning to hoop at the knees and bring it back up as been difficult for me, i finally got it down a couple of months ago. All i can say is practice make perfect. Don't give up
Does anyone know how to make it move less... choppy? I don't know.. haha. When I do this, the hoop stays up but it bangs against my leg and does not look/feel fluid at all.
I need some help with this, I can keep the hoop consistently at my knees but Im doing the opposite of what you say in the video (hoop to the left, right leg pusher) and I run into problems when trying to raise it from knees to waist. When I try to do it the *right* way the hoop goes at a diagonal and falls after a few revolutions. Is this normal to have learned backwards?
@GCYMSgtMaj This is not a bad thing. Just practice the opposite side too and then when you start walking you'll already have the freedom to hoop with either leg. ; )
a really really easyway to dothis is to basicly nend both knees and sorta 'bounce' and once youve had enough practice at doing that, you can start practicing safires way .
p.s. i actually find it wayy easier to use my left leg to push whil hooping
Hey, I'm new to hooping and I'm having trouble with the knees. My hoop is dropping everytime I try to get it down to right above my knees.. And i can keep it just below my knees, but it's not very pretty.. What can I do to keep it above the knee?
You are a fantastic teacher. I'm going to check out your classes.
One question - I think I've been following your instruction pretty closely I can only keep the hoop in rotation for like 12 rounds before it slowly decends to my knee and when it gets there it just crashes to the ground. Is there a key or muscle movement to keeping it up?
I've been practicing this but it hurts a lot and i keep ending up with bruises on the sides of my knee, any tips how to help with that or am i doing it wrong and that's why?
I basically have a lot of trouble keeping the hoop at my knees (among other parts of my body) when I'm wearing more clothing (pants, long sleeves), obviously. But my question is, does hooping get easier while you're wearing more clothing when you've doing it for longer? or do you have special pointers for this?
I've been hooping for a few weeks. I have learnt so much already. Stepping though the hoop, spinning it around my body, torso, shoulders, hands but I cant do knees! Its driving me crazy! Any super helpful tips?! Its making me mad hahaha.
I've been hooping for a few weeks. I have learnt so much already. Stepping though the hoop, spinning it around my body, torso, shoulders, hands but I cant do knees! Its driving me crazy! Any super helpful tips?! Its making me mad hahaha.
what size is your hoop? I have a 42" and I am having a difficult time. I almost do it and then it drops. ow my knees and shins hurt. love the tutorials!
i think its because your hoop is too big.. although its said to start out big, i dont advise it. im also a professional hoop dancer, i use a 37 in. and learned on a 32 in
I've noticed with this move that speed also works in your favor. If I hoop a little faster on my knees than I would at my waist, it works. I'm assuming that the need for speed will decrease as your muscles get more familiar with the movement, but I don't know that for a fact. I only started learning this trick a few days ago.
My legs are black and blue..lol, I have been trying to do this for two years now and I cant seem to get the hoop to NOT fall to the ground. I just watched this video...should I try r to use a lighter hoop?? Your so rad!!
I can get the hoop to go around the top of my knee once but after that it just crashes to the floor. Any suggestions or ideas to help me keep it up above my knee, I am already bare legged and i'm pushing my knee forward I think? Cheers !
Thank you so much for these! I have a question for ya. It looks like your not actually hooping at the knees but lightly above them, is this critical, because I can't seem to keep it up! If I try to hoop a little lower actually on my knees, I can keep it up, but I have bruises so bad that I can't practice again for days, and can barely walk. Is there a way to learn this without killing myself?
Sandra~ Your hooping is beautiful and your instructions are incredible! I just started hooping last week and i feel really great with all your intermediate videos already.... except this one :-( When I try to hoop at my knees the hoop either goes back up to my butt or slides down to the floor. I can think of 3 possibilities: the hoop (or me) is too slippery, the hoop is too big for me, or i have the timing off. Any suggestions? why am I having such a learning curve with this move?
I've always been quite thin but I did notice about 5-10 pounds lost when I started hoop dancing on a regular basis. This says a lot since the last 10 is the hardest to lose.
I just started learning to hoop, this is a great tutorial. I can make it stay up by following how you do it, but it really hurts my knees and legs?! I have a 41in hoop (from Betty Hoops' hoop dance workout) that's padded, but it really canes going at higher speeds. do you get used to it, and not get so bruised, or...?
You will get used to it and bruise less as you improve. If you can get your hands on a softer hoop that might be nice for while you are learning. I like having a few different kinds and sizes of hoops as each one can cause you to move differently.
I can hoop at the knees and keep it up but CANNOT keep above my knees, only at my knees, and as a result its impossible to bring it back up. Any extra tips?
I've found this is more difficult to achieve when wearing sneakers rather than my ridiculous 5 1'2" platform boots that are raised at the heel). I think it's probably because when flat footed my knees are then closer to the ground and thus the hoop has less distance to fall...
Any way to combat this? Maybe if I stand on toe? I really want to be able to do this without having to depend on wearing tall shoes /all/ the time, lol.
Thanks! Yeah I realized after watching this tutorial over again your hoop tends to be hire up on your leg. I've had it going around my knees a little lower. So that may be why I've been having difficulties.
Yeah, the big ones can be a bit uncomfortable on the knees at first. You will toughen up over time; although you can always test out a smaller hoop as you improve.
Hi Sandra, nice tutorial, but I got stuck at the knee hooping. When I lift my knee to keep it up, the hoop gets up in front, but in the back it really goes downwards, the hoop almost makes contact with the floor! what am I doing wrong?
1. Make sure that you are not lifting your pusher leg too much when you shove. This will push the front of the hoop upwards. Try to send the force forward rather then up.
2. Move your pusher foot back a few inches so your support leg is slightly in front.
You really have a knack for teaching...verbal and demonstration have perfectly understandable simplicity. I'm a little rusty, but I have no doubt your tutorials are effective. Yay!!
this helped so much! thank you! :)

I've used all kinds of hoops, all sizes, thicknesses and weights. It all depends on my mood or favourite at the time. I usually make my own hoops.

It's easier to hoop right above your knees. Less painful and more control. Also after it drops below your knee cap it becomes much more difficult.

Hey Lia!
I would consider yourself lucky. Bringing the hoop up from the knees is supposed to be really hard for people and you've done it by mistake!
Yeah a grippy hoop and bare legs is a good way to practice this move in the beginning.

Be sure that you are bending you knee and pushing forward rather then up. If you push up it will tip the hoop and cause it to hit the floor.
Hope this helps.

Also, the hoop seems to stick to my skin as it comes around and pull on it. Am I doing it wrong?

Sticking to the skin can make it helpful so it doesn't slip off but if it's uncomfortable maybe re-tape the hoop with a different kind of tape.
