  • beautiful sound. beautifuly played.~

  • @veronicanthniaa -- glad you liked it :)

  • That is an amazing violin and great song. I wish I had that violin.

  • @YodaThaSoldja -- thanks so much!!!

  • MY FAVORITE SONG! <3 ASHOKAN FARWELL!!

  • Where do you get all these different violins to try?

  • People say it has a great sound and it sure does but the real work is done by the amazing player, you are very talented ! Music i would definitely wake up to . By the way quick question, on advice i have a violin and i really want to change its color to a more older ,fancier look and make it seem gorgeous ! Any advice on doing it without damaging the sound of the violin or anything else?

  • may be a stupid question... but what song is that? thanks

  • @kethompson98 --

its the 'ashokan farewell' written by Jay Ungar in 1982. Ungar is a fiddler and composer; the piece became well-known after documentary producer ken burns used it in his pbs miniseries 'the civil war' (i think it was used over 20 times over the course of the series).

  • @eboyinc Thanks! I wondered why thought of the civil war when i heard this!

  • I love this song so much.. I play it on my violin all the time

  • @ThatOneKid641 -- there are some really amazing american violinmakers today...many of them from california. try your local shop and ask them to show you some violins that are handmade.

  • i have built about 4 violins in the past year, whenever i first play them, it has a tin rattle and hollow noise...do you know what i mean? if so do you have any tips so i can make it sound nicer.

  • @tommyv166123 -- we're just violin students, not violin makers. we know from experience in adjusting our own instruments that there are many, many variables involved in just setting up a violin. there are quite a few makers on youtube. maybe they would have a suggestion.

  • @eboyinc thanks!

  • interestingly carved top.

  • Oh lord, I think I'm in love. :o

  • That's a very interesting sounding violin. It does sound different to me, a little dark and mellow, but overall that looks and sounds like a wonderful violin.

  • ..that violin must have been heavy...

  • @619LLa -- oh no, its a handmade violin, light as a feather :)

  • OH mY GoodNess!!!!!!!! love it to pieces!! Stunning Sound. Nice playing...

  • @Sueski2 -- thanks...glad you liked it :)

  • That is a beeeutifull violin.. i want it!!!!!

  • @anakinskypi -- its a work of art...prettier in person.

  • I'm thinking about starting to build violins now. I'd love to make one like this. I just can't get over its beauty!!

  • @anakinskypi -- its an amazing violin...the wood was like a work of art!

  • It creates a beautiful sound considering the fact that its made from chestnut wood

  • @higurashilover1 -- agreed. nice violin for sure!

  • CHESTNUT ARE FOR TABLES, IVE NEVER SEEN SOMETHING SO NICE!

  • @masicklazik -- its a work of art...the vid doesn't do it justice :)

  • I don't know how it sounds so good--I mean, CHESTNUT??? Cool. Who made it??

  • @ukepenviolin -- its by an american maker...i can't remember his name...

  • id buy it in a heartbeat.if you ever need to sell please contact me

  • One of the most beautiful violins I've ever seen. :)

  • @aurora9702 -- i have to agree...it is a work of art :)

  • I was wondering how hardwood used for top would affect the sound. Generally softwoods are... soft and wouldn't fit well to thrown-around fiddles which could be taken for long outdoor trips.

But I hear the sound is quite satisfying. Even better than usual, I'd say.

  • @Max0Inq -- i think your right about that...the maker definately wanted to experiement with this beautiful wood which we were told is american chestnut which is a rare wood due to the fact that american chestnut trees were almost totally eliminated from blight. the sound is different, but very beautiful...and the violin is soooo beautiful.

  • The sound is great, but the violin... Is just beautifull!

  • beautiful violin sounds great, is an Italian violin?

  • @opinionista101 -- thanks for your comment...its a fantastic instrument. it was made by a talented american violinmaker.

  • I love this violin! Its not too far fetched yet it still grabs your attention. And it sounds great. Ughh I wanna hold it lol =) Any idea who made this instrument?

  • @pmbazman15 -- it was one of my favorites...a work of art. it was an american maker...i can't recall the name.

  • Wonderful. I love the sharp yet mellow sound of the violin. A grand piece of art. By the way where do you get all these violins?

  • @RobertHuck64 -- its a fantastic violin. the violins are part of a collection that was amassed over the lifetime of a professional violinist who passed away a few years ago. their family asked my brother and i to help catalog the colleciton by doing a short sound sample on each instrument :)

  • @eboyinc lucky

  • That has to be the most beautiful piece of wood ever applied to a violin!

I like the tone, too. A bit sharp, with nice overtones. This sounds like it would cut through the background noise in a music hall.

  • @Hikikomori013 --- i wish you could see it in person...this violin is a work of art :)

  • I have never seen a violin like that. It's very pretty! :o) And to hear that sound sample was very helpful to me because I heard it for the first time last year on a video and liked it a lot. Thanks. ;-)

  • @Spangley03 -- it's even more beautiful in person...glad you enjoyed the video :)

  • @eboyinc Do you still have the violin? Is there a label at all inside the instrument? It's very unique. ;P

  • @Spangley03 -- the violins that we use to make the videos here on eboyinc are part of a large violin colleciton that belonged to a professional violinist who passed away a few years ago. their family asked me and my brother to help them catalog the collection by doing a 1 minute sound sample on each violin. that's how this channel got started. each video is on a different violin. there was a label, but i don't recall the maker. it was a while ago...

  • sounds like a good Violin to play when playing Nearer my god to thee.

    in low notes ;)

  • We are playing this song at school... :) Pretty violin!

  • @L8tergator17 -- hey that's great...its a terrific piece. my brother and i did this and apalachian waltz in our quartet. your audiance will love it c:

  • @eboyinc - Cool! Thanks :)

  • Such a beautiful violin. I have never seen another to compare with it. Sounds great too. Is there any instance where this instrument has been played in concert, perhaps a concerto of some sort? I would love to see/hear it.

  • @241hnd -- we don't know for sure, but suspected it was played in a concert setting by a professional violinist who specialized in country music. the original owner passed away and there isn't much information to go on.

  • Genuin mountain music, on a mountain violin!

  • @Bertziethegreat -- this is one beautiful instrument...thanks for your comment!

  • A very characteristic sound, which works really well with Jay Ungar's piece. Beautiful sound, lovely appearance. We get really caught up using the traditional woods, though people think nothing of experimenting with strings.

  • @ericnotthefish -- thanks so much...you're right about the woods. we've played on a few violins made out of different wood and each has a special character. i heard about a violin made out of balsa that was supposed to be awsome c:

  • Interesting experiment. Shows a personal style.

  • @viol999 -- definately a very beautiful violin...thanks.

  • wow, Now that's one unique looking violin.

  • do you know if a certain company made the violin or if it was independantly made

  • @TheNatureNinja -- hi, i recorded this about a year and a half ago and don't remember the name of the maker, but it was an individual, handsigned label. the violin was much more beautiful in person than it appears in this video. it really was a special instrument.

  • yeah its awesome i want one now :)

  • It has a very bright sound compared with the 150 year old fiddle or the Italian fiddle. I can't listen to them all, wish I had the time though. They all sound so unique and beautiful. This one sounds like it would be perfect for county music or some of the very fast paced classical dance pieces

  • @yigenuren -- thanks for watching the video. this is a special violin and i think you're right about its sound. my brother posted two sound samples on June 17th... an 1936 american violin...Wieniawski Kujawiak, 2nd Mazurka...it has an amazing sound... and a sample of an italian violin circa 1920... also with a beautiful sound...LIEBESLEID, Love's Sorrow, KREISLER...both are worth a listen.

  • @kelphyr -- its an awsome instrument...beautiful to look at and equally nice to play!

  • Hmm.. Which is better though- chestnut or maple? ive heard that maple wood is harder and better for violins. Plus in years after playing it the sound quality improves. But this chestnut wood makes beautiful sounds really. reminds me of the Sradavarius.

  • @musicindisguise -- makers have been experimenting with woods since day one and there must be clear advantages to maple since its the standard, but i've played on cedar violins, plastic and metal violins, and i've heard of walnut, wormy chestnut, balsa, glass and other materials being used (and I'm sure there's tons of other varieties out there)...this I was told was american chestnut and had interesting sound qualities.

  • @eboyinc

Hmm.. must be quite expensive. It looks the best for me though :P

    I want it. 0_o

  • @musicindisguise -- its a beautiful violin--terrific to play on c:

  • LOl , the only cool violin a have is a sparkly hot pink :)

  • whoa, it really is resonant and it gives off a soft sound, maybe its because of ur shiftings, hehe, from ur violin collections, this violin is my one of my fave, can u try chopin noc.27 no. 2 on this instrument?

  • it's moments like this that make me wish I played violin haha

  • @RCardone13 hey thanks...its never too late to learn...

  • this has convinced me to build a guitar in chestnut.. beautiful!!

  • @crimsonguitars -- its very beautiful wood and the sound is very deep and resonant....i was told that this is american dhestnut which is rare due to a blight that decimated American chestnut trees. i'd love to see the finished guitar :D

  • aSHOKAN fAREWELL!LOVE THAT SONG!!!

  • @lorina1939 -- me too. when i heard it on the ken burns 'civil war' series, i just had to play it.

  • Ahhh chestnut always makes a statement! It's very underrated wood.

  • @TheBuilder65 -- understated and really beautiful to look at too.

  • My violin sounds like this one. Maybe that's why I love this one so much. X) and something I've noticed is that my partner's(or concertmaster...) violin sounds like the French one. It has a very nice sound and deep tone kinda like a viola. Just felt like sayin that. X)

  • hi, yeah, i love the sound of this one too. something about that old chestnut that the maker used, i think, gives it a very resonant, deep sound. you must have a nice instrument :D

  • To most. But these ppl can play on any instrument and they'll make it sound amazing. That's how pro they are. XD

  • hey thanks...but we're just high school violinists. you can see us playing some of our recitals, concerts, etc. at the youtube channel

    -- Musicasa2ndLanguage --

we're not professionals, just a couple of high school students (and violin students) a long way from being pros. many of these violins are excellent, really excellent instruments...we try to bring out their best sound so they can be compared evenly, but we can't make a poor violin sound as good as a fine violin.

  • violin does matter tho

  • i agree; i try to bring out the purest sound qualities of each violin, and you can hear the differences if you go through the two hundred sound samples. it really becomes clear that different makers from different times in history...in different countries...using different materials...made very different sounding instruments.

  • does it have fine tuners? BTW,cute violin ;)

  • Seems to have really nice projection, plus the satisfaction of playing an entirely domestic instrument made of local wood.

  • yea, totally...awsome violin c:

  • how does this compare to a violin with a spruce front?

  • well, its hard to make a comparison because this entire violin was made of old american chestnut. this one played really nice, with a terrific sound and while its hard to see the wood in the video, in person its extremely beautiful.

  • interesting choice of tone wood?

  • its got to be one of the most beautiful looking violins i've ever played...certainly a non-traditional choice of materials :D

  • yay so beautiful wood ^_^... is it yours?

I would love a video of the violin itself from different views.

  • Absolutely amazing and soooo beautiful.

  • thanks...glad you liked it :D

  • Is the evenness of tone mostly skill, strings, or bow?

  • well, in the case of this video, i'm not sure how much skill affected the sound. but in general, skill, strings, bow, and violin are surely the basics for tone. but there are many more subtle and not so subtle influences...not a simple answer for this :D

  • Do you think you could PM me a more complicated answer? I'm searching for a new instrument but I want to know if I should invest my money in better strings, a better instrument or a better bow or any combination thereof.

  • sure, but its complicated to make that kind of recommendation not knowing your level of play. for a beginner, i'd recommend a good instrument, but i wouldn't spend too much. good strings are important no matter what instrument you select. but again, depending on your level, i'd say dominants or their equivalent would be good enough to get started (more to come in next message)...

  • part II of Message -- string selection will take time and you'll need to really know your instrument well before making serious string decisions. there's a saying, "spend 1/4 of what your violin costs on your bow". so if you're buying a $200 violin, get a $50 bow. if you're buying a $2000 instrument, get a $400 or $500 bow (more to come in next message)...

  • part III of Message -- let me know what level you're at...what pieces are you working on; what etude books are you studying :D

  • I've mastered every song in Suzuki Book 3, haven't moved to book 4 because this just happened during this week; Volume II of the Doflein Method; Book 1 of Wolfahrt Foundation Studies.

I'm working on Paganini's10th, 17th (I think) and 24th caprices. Also played the finale of Mozart's 35th symphony in our last concert and things of the same skill level.

  • ok, well if you're moving in to book 4 then you're advanced enough to know if you need a new instrument and bow and you're advanced enough to be able to discern the differences between the violins and bows that you try. trust you're ear...a good violinist knows the sound that they want...the basics have to exist within the instrument. bows and strings (and set-up) can help improve a violin, but the basics have to exist to begin with. good luck and have fun in your search :D

  • gorgeous violin..

  • hi, thanks...it is really beautiful to see and beautiful to play on :D

  • What's the fingeboard made of?

  • i'm not sure, it was reddish brown...pretty wood of some kind, but not the usual ebony :D

  • what is it like to play this violin. do you like it or is it a bit of a novelty item? Amazing sound you get out of it but you do on all the violins

  • this was one of the most beautiful, well-made vioins i've ever played...its a serious instrument and played like a dream. i really loved it :D

  • Very nice tone, and a nicely played version of the tune too ! An interesting alternative material - I guess people use what they have available - makes sense. Do you know the name of the maker ? And .. could you record another tune ? Thanks !!

  • this is a fantastic violin by a good maker, so i suspect that this was an experimental use of alternative materials. it was one of the most beautiful violins i've ever seen. i get about 5 minutes with each instrument...just enough time to open the case, tune it up and record a minute or two for the sound sample :D

  • Soooo beautiful!!!

  • A very untraditional instrument it appears.

Slab top, no purfling, just thinned/carved?

Americans even made violins out of cigar boxes and paint thinner cans. Some innovative work in musical instruments to be sure.

Thanks for posting (this and all your other stuff too)

  • hi...thanks so much....glad you like the videos. this violin was beautfiully carved. its a really special instrument :D

  • this violin is beautiful...

  • thanks...i wish everyone could see it in person....its one of the most beautiful violins i've ever seen :D

  • there is something about the violin that makes my soul soar. You definitely made it soar! By the way do you play the Mystery Sonatas of Ignaz Biber?

  • thanks so much! i've heard the biber sonatas, but i've never played them...

  • if you ever do them. Please post it on YT

  • its a deal :D

  • You may already know this, but Ashokan is not spelled with a c. It is a resevoir and nature preserve in the Catskills. Interesteing fiddle though. No info on how old it is or where its from?

  • hi. thanks...i corrected the title...had it right in the description. i didn't know about the catskills connection. cool. its a fantastic violin made by an american luthier early 20th century.

  • this almost sounds a bit like an asian song. like on erhu but diiffernt. Anyway, i like it ^^

  • hey thanks :D

  • i played this my senior year in hs

  • i've loved this piece since i first heard it on the ken burns civil war series. i wish i could play it better :D

  • u played it beautifully

  • dude. you have to play czardas

  • i sight read it for one of the sound samples...a friend plays it and i've always wanted to do it :D

  • Wow thats such a clear sounding violin!

  • this is an amazing instrument. i wondered whether the wood used gave it such a clear voice.

  • how much would this instrument cost?

  • Do you have anymore celtic music? I'm in love with this piece/song... I just play it over and over again. One i never really tire of. Like bach's partita no. 2, 1st mov. Allemanda... I just keep going back

  • I like the look of the violin...but it's tone...I just don't care for...You're an amazing violinist though!

  • this violin is so amazing, you're very lucky to be playing this one, i would kill to be able to play it. also i love the song that u played here its very soothing.

  • what beautiful playing and violin

  • You should play an excerpt from braveheart with this violin

  • This is the most amazing violin I've seen. Where did you get it? Sounds better than my $12,000 Vittorio Villa (which is still an amazing italian violin).

  • I am fascinated by this violin. It should be in the Smithsonian or some museum. Have you ever considered donating it?

  • thank you :-))

  • amzing

    i like it

    the sound and the look

    akram

  • hi, thanks for writing...it's a wonderful violin. by the way, i just viewed your videos...they're awsome :D

  • Very beautifull performed. The violin is gorgeous.

  • the violin is a work of art...really beautiful :D

  • Where can you get a violin like this. It's awsome!!!

  • it's part of a collection of amazing instruments...you're right about this one, it's awsome :D

  • What a nice instrument!

  • this one is very special :D

  • Wow!!!! I LOVE THIS VIOLIN!!!!

  • me too...its a beautiful instrument :D

  • Girl, you had us, the Bach Partita vid shows you at a very early stage, but really far back, what I hear now is atonishing, and breathtaking, congrats, truly, a standing ovation from this humble fan of yours.

  • whoa, thanks so much :D

  • You are welcome, cheers and the best of lucks

  • Special instrument. Thanks for sharing it.

  • glad you liked it...it's one of my favorites :D

  • What a cool violin!!!

  • this is one of the most unusual and beautiful instruments i've ever seen or played...totally cool :D

  • I want that violin! Who made it!?

  • hi...it was an american maker. one of the most beautiful violins i've seen...truly a work of art :D

  • sounds really good, just make your bow changes smoother

  • thanks. always tough picking up a violin for the first time...i take them out of the case and start the video...but i'll watch the bow changes. hey, i liked your japanese song video, is that you playing the violin?

  • I keep coming back to this remarkable video. I just love this violin!!!

  • hi, glad you're enjoying the video...the violin is amazing...a work of art :D

  • I Love this violin! when it gets into the lower notes, its rich. Where can you find such a violin???

    btw: you play beautifully! =]

  • hi, thanks for your comment. this violin and the others that we've played here on YT are part of a collection of violins...(not ours). there are many violins in the collection, some like this one are very rare and unusual. i'm guessing that this was made a long time ago for someone who wanted something very different. its really a work of art :D

  • This is an exceptional instrument. You're providing a rare and unusual service to those of us who love violins. It's extraordinary to be able to hear and compare so many different violins played so beautifully. We here on YouTube own you a debt of thanks. From me, thank you!
