  • That's amazin! Well done that Singer. I liked Private Eyes, Maneater and the Family Man one, too. The 80s was a great time for popular music!

  • Hold up is that David Ruffin n Eddie kendricks from the temptations on the mic???

  • Makes you wish it were still back in those days! Not many current groups that can belt 'em out like this!

  • Hall & Oates rule! Watch Live from Darryl's House. He's still doing great things, and still looks HOT!

  • wish I could find the cassette I used to play it to death in my car way back when

  • I get goosebumps every time I watch this. LOVE YOU, DARYL HALL!!!!

  • I love Hall's blue-eyed plastic, stilted version of soul music!!

  • 12 people are idiots, how can you not like this song? unless ur on crack

  • @418894 whether you're on a crack or not, you'll still love it. Haters just have no taste in good music.

  • I'll have what he's having

  • I SEEN THEM AT THE PNE IN VANCOUVER SEPT 2 ND 2011 AWESOME SHOW ! KEEP IT UP GUYS !

  • Daryl Hall is simply... beautiful and flawless!

  • My baby Daryl looks like he is a bit "on something" but my goodness, I want some of what he had if that is what it does to you!! WOW!! Flawless vocals..........my goodness!!!

  • This version is much better than Paul Young's. The voice of Daryl Hall is outstanding, and the plus of David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick wears the single incredibly.

  • @Dramadeus1967 it's Daryl's song, Paul Young covered it.

  • @TeamEvan00 I know that.

  • Well, i know somthing of rock and ever think that Paul Young wrote this song. This was a HIT in Perú in the 80 but this version have more soul is no like POP sound. I ever think that with some exceptions the british singers are better than the americans but in this case H&O are better.

  • LOVE it! I wish I had saved my money and saw H&O in their prime..what was I thinking.....Paul Young did a great job...but, that was one of the two songs that were any good! "Where I lay my hat..that's my home"....

  • I love these guys...this version is wonderful....breathtaking....stunning..

  • This is the shiznit!! Is that David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks? If so, cocaine is a helluva drug! They are bad as hell!

  • Cocaine's a helluva drug

  • hall and oates wrote this song but was a huge hit for paul young it was the only hit for paul young

  • One of the best live performances of the century awesome Daryl Hall!

  • That White boy can Sang right there... I don't care who you are... You have to admit that. That's some soul buried in there rather haters want to admit it or not...

  • @RiviDude Daryl Hall's race is irrelevant. HE CAN SING...PERIOD!!!

  • this version is more soulful than the original

  • love this song.

  • Farah's Faucet on acid, poor old Messrs Oats consigned to a backing role.

The English version was better and I like neither.

  • Hall and Oates in their glory... I got the VHS tape for Christmas many years ago, still have it. It's kind of like Kiss Alive, they bring so much more to the table playing live. The "Voices" version does it no justice, the energy they bring to this in this performance gives it so much more dimension. To use a football term, Hall and Oates truly "left it all on the field" on this. Fabulous performance.

  • been looking for this for years..

  • Does anyone know where can i download this original version by Daryl Hall? not the shitty Paul young one

  • @ZbotakZ

Itunes has I believe or you can buy the cd/dvd-- good shit

  • I wonder if his parents are proud of him....

  • Melhor interprete na minha opnião,parabéns...

  • Just this one, Paul could not eat so big. P&O owned this one

  • The original is 1 million times better than Paul Young's sissy version!

  • J'ai regardé cela une bonne centaine de fois et je continue de penser que ce concert était tout simplement extraordinaire !!!

  • nice camera work here.

  • dude looks coked off his rocker lol

  • @huskie32

the psychedelic feeling he talks about at the start of the clip is perhaps because of all the LSD or mescaline in his system - i don't like this version anyways - Paul Young's is much better - no offense to temptations or GE

  • this guy is badasss

  • The Rebound (2009)

  • O. I'm pretty sure I heard this live in 1982 in LA (universal studios), as it is unforgettably cool. Gorgeous!

  • I must shut my eyes to appreciate this tune but when I do I wonder, where is this cat today?

  • oh wait a minute, up top someone mentioned they did it in 82?! too bad there wasnt a version of that around. even so, they really didnt add it to their playlist until 88 and still perform it on occasion. also performed at Farm Aid later in 85 with all the band minus John and with the additon of Bonnie raitt and Billy joel!

  • This version was amazing! Im pretty sure it was the first time they ever played it live. It was around the time Paul young had a hit with it so they figured why not? Also the voices, pun intended, the classic Temptations there too, forget it! The axemanship of GE Smith on here was the icing on the cake! and the cherry on top? well somewhere toward the end of the song where theyre just groovin on it, David Ruffin gets so inspired he starts singing the lead!

  • god I wish I could sing like him

  • I concur walstib, well said!!!

  • Yea but does anyone remember Paul Young?

  • G.E. Smith is the man

  • Daryl looks so sexy! I have a major crush on early to mid 1980s Hall.

  • could watch it over & over Love Hall & Oates with the temptations!

  • Daryl is the writer of the song, so who eva made a hit on it...he gets the royalties!! not to mention Daryl is a great soulful singer in his own right!!!

  • I do; if you look, I was responding to someone else's quote.

  • Daryl Hall is so soulful, and only he could look good in that lion mane.

  • Interesting that you suggest Hall & Oates "started" doing a song they recorded BEFORE Paul Young released it. Sure Young wrote which does in fact reflect HIS idea of how the tune should be performed. Truthfully I think MY version is just as good as this one. Different in that I am a singer/guitarist that includes a guitar solo in most of the tunes I do but I haven't had the good fortune to get to work with multiple vocalists very often. This is very good performance.

  • Good, but does not quite top the Paul A. Young version to be honest.

  • Maybe people prefer the Paul Young version because Daryll Hall was such an up-his-own-ass wanker. Probably still is.

  • i love it

  • cudne ....

  • Is he totally high?

  • This is simple to understand why some people prefer Paul Youngversion and others Hall & Oates. Paul Young's version was in pop genre and Hall & Oates rock style. Some do pop others do rock.

  • I've always liked this song and I'm a big fan of Hall & Oates, but until today I NEVER knew that they did the the original. Now that I think about it though it does sound like their flavor. Paul Young did a beautiful job with it, however Daryl's vocals are freakin' amazing!!! I'm just sayin'...

  • Fuck you people who dislike this....Thanx

  • Obviously high at the beginning.

  • @punkmusicmetal im guessin pretty loaded through the middle and at the end too lol

  • 10 PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT EVERYTIME SOMEONE GOES AWAY

  • I LOVE YOU BGIRL.......................

  • juste original and so powerfull song..i prefer it to paul young version..

  • AWESOME!! This is the reason I'm hooked to YouTube!

  • Mickey Curry on Drums!

    Mr. Groooove!

  • My angel baby Mac,sorry for being a bit clumsy recently, its only cos I love you,the words in this song are so true, wished you didn't have to go away, but it matters not,I whole heartedly understand .XXXXXX D.W.J.

  • I've seen H&O in concert three times within the last five years. It's great that they are still performing, but nothing compares to this performance. I was too young during this era to attend concerts, and wish I could have appreciated them live in their hayday. Daryl Hall was amazing!

  • And to think Fellow Philadelphia Native Todd Rundgren who also did his own Blue Eyed Soul earlier Produced and Directed their albums as his voice also sounded a lot like Daryl Hall's Voice when he was younger

  • the cocaine was flowing freely apparently

  • Whoa, that was good.

  • I was 7 or 8 when this project was out. I really didn't know Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin, I was use to the Temptation line-up from the mid-80s. It wasn't until I became older and realized who they were that I saw how awesome this was for Daryl & John. Kendricks & Ruffin are Legends; The Temptations influenced EVERYONE! For John & Daryl to work w/ their idols in that way must have been an absolute blessing. They love soul and R&B so much and you can't get any better than that!

  • They will always be badass. Billy Joel and Hall and Oats, instant reminder of my youth. Plus Cindy Lauper. Thank you!!

  • ssssssuper

  • good better hall & aotes best

  • Still the best male vocalist in the music biz, imho.

  • COCAINE IS A HELL OF A DRUG!! is he wired here?

  • just love this man

  • "Notice how they start doing this song live after Paul Young made it huge. I bet they wouldve completely bailed on it otherwise, since the original version was no where as good." Are you kidding? The original came out in '80, and they were playing it when I saw them in '82. The original version has so much soul--the organ/drums/bass at the start, building with a "Wall of Sound" approach. Paul Young's version was more commercially accessible, sure. The original though--a monument of pop/soul.

  • @walstib77

not sure about that...in the end--it is their song Paul just recorded.. Darryl created

it and frankly, Hall and Oates and Paul Young do not belong in the same category..Paul's version is good, but the song is pure Philly sound..

  • @walstib77 Absolutely. They never stopped playing this song, it's the original one. I think we have to thank Paul Young for bringing the song for bigger audience, in Europe. Even Hall & Oates had/have fans in Europe, anything wasn't as big until Paul Young broke through. Imo, from European point of view, people then realized that this is a hell of a good song and its original was even better. Sometimes covering songs make people see things as they are. Hall & Oates got more fans. Good for them!

  • @walstib77

Daryl wrote this song if you didn't know....

  • @walstib77 thanks for clearing that up

  • @walstib77 WTF, Daryl Hall WROTE the song asswipe! Paul Young recorded it and it went to the top of the charts but Daryl is the author.

  • @bobbarita I think you completely missed my post--it was a reply to someone who was saying the Paul Young version is better. Wipe yer OWN ass, I was givin Hall and Oates props. I been a fan since Sara Smile same out in 76.

  • Notice how they start doing this song live after Paul Young made it huge. I bet they wouldve completely bailed on it otherwise, since the original version was no where as good

  • @Cr1mSiR That's not true. You are twisting the truth here.

  • OMG! I get chills at this blue eyed soul!!!

  • Hall and Oates live and at their very best at the Apollo with the Temptations. World class performance.

  • @sarasmilepiano Imagine, not many white people couldn't play at Apollo. It has interesting history. What comes to The Temptations, damn they were good! Papa was a rolling stone is pure deep soul, especially long version. It makes me very humble. I love these men. So underrated.

  • I very much agree what you said. Daryl hall is a one of best singers with his wonderful voice.

  • I wont go away daryl ;)

  • OMG, I recorded this onto video tape back in the 80's and never thought I'd see it again!!! I watched it so many times back then I know all the ad libs... thanks so much for the teenage flashback : )

  • This even excedes the studio version. amazing.

  • @RadiationCinema not saying much

  • i still have my Abandoned lunchenette album from 73 these 2 are a magical pair and their music will last thru generations thanks for uploading this

  • Pure Class, Just get"s Better with age,..

  • Just get"s Better with the Year"s,....

  • Hall & Oates <3

  • Hall & Oates <3

  • they are simply amazing!

  • i love him!!!

  • do you have the rest of this video? coz i know they also sing "my girl"

    by the Temptation

  • Why cant the music Industry WAKE UP and put artist like this back in the spotlight!!!!

  • Mickey Curry on drums! The Pocket King!

  • Soul beats Pop

  • amazing voice and amazing song... but just on a side note... were they drugged or on medication? coz looking at their eyes i can kinda tell they were on something...

  • Hall & oates have some of my favorite songs...Yeah he's high as a kite here..And its sad to see Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin of the temptations used here as backup singers...It was near the end of their lives...I'm not sure of the date of this concert.but I know it was near the end for them.

  • Wow! I didn't know Kevin Bacon could sing too!

  • Wow...that's a really awesome lineup on stage! It doesn't get any better than this.

As I'm typing this the sun has suddenly appeared from behind the clouds! The magic of Hall and Oates.

And please, God......can I be reincarnated as Daryl's hair stylist?

  • Probably the best live Hall and Oates performance ever.

  • For the morons who don't google before they comment, let me school you. The song is originally written and performed by Hall & Oates. The reason they are with two of the Temptations at this performance is cuz it was a special at the Apollo Theater. They also performed Temptations hits together. The whole concert was amazing.

  • Paul what ?

  • Man this is very cool - Mr. Hall has some smooth pipes.

  • This video shows Charlie DeChant in the background (playing the organ) without wearing sunshades.

  • ....7 canciones tranquilas para 7 días tranquilos....Hoy toca HALL & OATES...

  • Top song saw them in London a few years ago, thats ticked off my bucket list

  • staggering talent

  • I played a show with Daryl Hall and instantly fell in love with Hall & Oates!!!! Would love to play with him again, I posted videos on my page go watch!

  • best version!!!

  • @bcfcyouknowsit actually... daryl hall wrote it.

  • @bcfcyouknowsit WRONG. He covered it.

  • @bcfcyouknowsit Daryl Hall wrote and recorded this song on the 1980 Voices album. Paul Young literally stole without permission in 1985.

  • @bcfcyouknowsit UHH... NO! It is the other way around! Go listen to some Justin Beiber or Bebeier or however the hell you spell that little fags name!

  • @sabomnim628 NO you go and listen to Tommy Cooper singing Dont Jump Of The Roof Dad

H and O didnt steel Tommys song because they dont have the vocal range needed.

  • @bcfcyouknowsit WOW! Are you serious?!?!!??!

  • Awesome video. rofll at 3:35 and how the background singers missed his cue!

  • I don't really know why and do still wonder why, but every single time I've ever heard this song it's brought tears to my eyes, right from the first time I heard them do it live in Poughkeepsie, NY.

  • One of the best songs of this group great!!

  • Man...that hair. He wasn't the same with the later short hair cut.

  • its shocking how high on coke daryl hall is here...

  • @Burnzy1976 Well he is with David Ruffin

  • @Inspector711 well he is not only with david ruffin, but also eddie kendricks, another temptation!

  • All those modern singers, this is hows it's done. No studio mixing here. Unreal

  • Excellent!

  • hair DON'T

  • david ruffin was a real junkie and he died from what I have read while the tour was on break when he was in the ghetto of new york trying to by dope and was robbed and killed they said he had over 5 grand in his fannie pack now why would you be in ghetto with that kind of money on you???????

  • @bigsexyblondiedreads The real question is why would you be in the ghetto with a fannie pack on?

  • Wow

  • What a great voice Darryl Hall has!

  • Blue eyed soul. These were some bad boys.

  • 4:41

  • RIP T-Bone ...you're a huge reason why I love Hall and Oates since my childhood....you were always just as important and I know Hall and Oates would agree

Thank You for sharing your gifts with the world

  • Agreed! Nice post!

  • By far the best version of this song ever!

  • Wikipedia says that Darryl quit working with Ruffin because of Ruffin's drug problem. Either way did anyone see G.E. Smith getting it at like 6:50? Talk about "Do it to death"!

  • was daryl ever on any drugd

  • A masterpiece, even if he's high as a kite.

  • lol riiiggghhhhttt

  • One of the best versions i've ever heard.Love them. As for Paul's version, it's only a different style of interpretation. You won't get tired listening to this version but you might with Paul Young's.

  • Hall's vocals at this time were probably at their best, and don't forget he was singing like this live without any studio prodution help. I think he lost a bit of his top end range with age but man, what a singer this guy is. Tracks like this when he is in full flow make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

  • Just off topic a bit. Daryl said that Ruffin had demanded cash for this concert and as soon as it was finished a limo whisked him away to a crack house, he died not long after this concert, such a tragic waste of talent, great song by the way.

  • david should've demanded cash he did some work this is in '85 at the apollo when daryl invited david on stage to do some temptation songs and david didnt die until six years after this concert and between the time david did many more concets so shutup

  • What the hell are talking about you idiot?, the show was orginised by Hall and Oates to showcase the former members of The Temptations and Ruffin And Kendricks were part of the show, the four had been friends since the 60s when Hall had his own group called The Temptones named after his favourite group, the concert was planned along with an album "Live At The Apollo", you don't know jack shit so go away and learn about Hall and Oates and then come back and tell me you were wrong

  • He was on drugs during this performance.

  • @acarlisl

    still a great performance though--

hall is a great singer- regardless

  • not better than david

  • shutup

  • haha they got the Temptations singing background...WOW!

  • What a prick - But what a brilliant song

  • Awesome hair!!

  • im sure it was a priv for hall and oates to perform with the late ex temps . be for real man

  • Daryl Hall looks a little like the late Patrick Swayze. LOL

But this dude can really sing!

  • u hear D and Ruffin starting at 5:33?!?!?

  • Love hall & oates forever. Indeed daryl one of the best singer..
