when they were building the canal, they thought it was way to wide and large for the largest ship (at the time) to fit in. they never thought that panama would have to widen and deepen the canal in only 100 years or so. and i have been here. :)
well, for the time being, yes, they have to go all the way around the tip of south America. Or they only use Post panamax ships only in the atlantic, or Pacific. They are currently working on widening, and deepening the panama canal in order to fit post panamax ships though.

This a panamax. A postpanamax coul be about 1200 feet long or more and 150 feet wide. They can carry up to ten thousand 40 feet container.
