So badass. What a brilliant song. Maybe my favorite song ever. And this is the best performance I've ever heard of it. Even better than the great king's singers.
My choir is doing this, and being from Indiana we took about 30 minutes to get the vowels correctly, and then once we got them it sounds even better! :D
The author seems to feel that the lady referred to in the song was Queen Elizabeth I. I rather doubt it, but there is no question that Dowland would have liked a job at the English court. The problem was that the Queen couldn't stand John Dowland because he was a wet blanket, and she liked to see smiling faces. In fact, Dowland didn't get a job at the English court until he became James I sixth lutenist! Anyway, nice video.
GORGEOUS idea for a video! I love Elizabeth I. Who is singing? This is the version we have on our rehearsal CD but I don't know who it is? And the song was written for QEI right?
I think you must be psychic to download this song from the Elizabethan period, considering I have just watched an excellent reconstruction of the "gunpowder plot" starring Robbie Coltrane, which I would highly recommend :-)

The words are not literally about any queen.

This is the best I've heard in a long time! I love how this music demonstrates the soft beauty of the English language.
