@GriefTourist Why do you think they would have won it when in 74 when Cruyff was in his prime they did not win it. Of course they almost won it when Resenbrink's late shot hit the post any way.
@Mrbrycewill Zoff had the sun right in his face and couldn't see the kick of Brandts, but surely Holland played well that match, I just say that Italy deserved the WC because until there they gave many good performances, also beating the ones that would have been champions (Argentina).
Ernie Brandts execution is extraordinary out of a precision and power point of view, anyhow match would have been different if foul on Claudio Gentile by Johnny Rep at 1:58 would have been detected
@MrParadroid if Gentile could have stayed in his position he would have got the ball (as well as in the trajectory of Brandt's shot, in which case such shot would have most probably not reached the goal).
He was moved away from his position and it does not matter to what the other player was looking at, it's a foul.
@MrParadroid Gentile is still, waiting to get the ball, while Rep hits him and moves him away. A good referee would have seen that and blown Rep's foul

They're totally different players. Not only that but Robben isn't renowned for his long distance shots. It's funny how this game was played at 1.30pm just like Holland vs Denmark in the 2010 WC. As I was watching that game the other day this game crossed my mind for some reason.
@expedition16 No, you're right... (but maybe his long-distance VOLLEYS lol!) In fact, every day as I leave my dorm room I place my left hand on a poster of Robben to wish him good luck, and I bought the new Adidas F30's in a red colour like he has, and I'm a big Bayern supporter... so yeah! I *SO* hope the Netherlands can beat Brazil and go on to win their first world cup!
Italy in 1978-1982 years was a very beautiful and intelligent team.
Netherlands..... it is impossible to find words to describe that genius team, between 1974-1978, with two finals unjust lost.
And, to be on topic, that game was superb, and even all people remember Arrie Haan`s goal (magnificent, of course) I would like that everybody to see again the goal of Brandts!
The shame about Italy is that they have the abilty to play attacking football like Holland and Brazil but choose to play negative, defensive football which makes them unpopular..But they have a good record doing it, which tells you something.Remember four years ago when they beat Germany..A boring world cup but for a few minutes Italy gave the world a glimpse of what they can do...they just don't take risks.
Your comments about Japan/Duran are about right,Italy have never had a flair team...ever,functional,calculating,-it has brought them results...certainly-I remember watchin the 74/78 WC as a kid,the Dutch were easily the best team in both, arrogance cost them in 74,bad luck in 78(Van hanagem hit the post in the last minute, they should of won it in 90mins)What a team, along with the Hungarians in 54,the best teams never to have won the WC-to beat Zoff from 40yrds..Haan had dynamite in his boots
va bene il primo gol, poco fuori dall'area, ma haan ha tirato da 50 metri.....zoff stava dormendo! forse è stato distratto dall'ombra dei riflettori....
@GordonMorrice zoff had a poor game. apparently the sun was in his eyes.
another thing was that italy weren't used to playing attacking football at that time so the team was eventually burned out once this match came about. as most people know italian soccer was too defensive and static.
most 70s teams did much more running, especially with the emergence of total football and bearzot was doing what he could with the azzurri. fortunately he got his reward in 1982
Its a pity that Holland didnt play against Brasil. We would have a great final.Argentina winning 6-0 against Peru. They knew they should win 4-0.A shame that Cuyff was in the same studio as Brian Clough.
And everybody laughs at Holland because theyve never won the World Cup.. Holland attended 2 World Cup finals in the 70's and bottled it both times because they've never had what it takes to win the World Cup.
Italy - 4 World Cups
Holland - 0 World Cups
Holland are shit just like Spain. Neither will EVER win the World Cup. Italy however will win it again and again and again because they are a REAL footballing nation!!!! Holland and Spain will always be jealous of the Italians in football!!l!!
So I'm wrong am I? How the hell am I spouting such idiotic bile?? Since when have Holland or Spain ever won a World Cup? Go through the books of footballing history and try to prove me wrong. I guarantee you won't prove me wrong because I am right. 100%. Neither Spain or Holland will ever win the World Cup because they've always lacked and always will lack the great qualities which the Italians posess in gigantic amounts. That is organisation, determination, discipline and mental strength!!!!!!
Hmmm, just like in Euro 2000, when they had the priviledge of losing in front of their royalty at home...favour returned and done with even 10 men for over 90 minutes...I've only seen 2 nations win big games in international tournaments with 10 men, Italy and Brazil...I think that speaks volumes about them as footballing nations. Based on team tactics and overall parity within the continent, European football is better than South American football, therefore Italy is the best footballing nation.
Well, just to recall that Resenbrink hit Fuijol post in the final game against Argentina at the very end of regulation..Lucky Argentina,! oops, there was also that game against Peru...
Remember watching this on TV in 78, Haan's goal was awesome, so was the other one he scored (Vs Germany was it ?) - probably the only thing i rememver from that World Cup, apart from the final, Scotland's defeat against Peru and Gemmill's goal aganst Holland. Really wanted them to beat Argentina in the final but it wasnt to be.
Altough I'm from Holland I think we came away pretty good with these long distance shots. As I recall we didn't have many chances as opposed to Italy.
Incredible during the Tournament Dutch was capable hit long distance shots. Although less spectactular than 1974, the Orange was consistent, effectve and proved to be prepared for raise the cup but unfortunately was not lucky enough during 1978 World Cup to did it . What a pity, one of the most unfair ends of all time ...
Holland were in a no-win situation in the 78 final, there was no way the Dutch were going to win that trophy...you could smell the stench before kick-off with all that funny business about the cast on Rene van der Kerkhof's injured arm.
Holland's goals were unsaveable..Zoff wasn't the only goalkeeper beaten by their long-range shooting...this game continues to scar Zoff's career but there was nothing he could do...Haan's shot actually bends away from him and goes in off the woodwork, an extraordinary strike
@stadioazteca I see your point but I agree with those who say he had a problem seeing the ball on long distance shots. I believe that if he had been able to see the shot better he would have reacted faster to it. The same thing happened with Brazil's goals against Italy in the match for third place.
True, Italy won in '82 despite Zoff, not because of him. They barely got out of the group stage because they were forced to play a defensive game, (two 0-0 ties) since they realized they had an old man as their goalkeeper, maybe that was Bearzot's tactic. Socrates goal on Zoff's short side was also dubious, but thank God for Rossi and for arrogant Brazilian defenders for not respecting Italy's midfielders and making lazy passes that kept getting intercepted, including one given right to Rossi.
Caro Totonno (Juliano?), giustissimo!
For the others, I'm italian. Holland 78-88-92-98 were very strong team, but not enough to compare to Holland 74, the best team I've ever seen. In my opinion, better than Brazil 70. The fault wasn't Jongbloed but the absence of a real goleador. Friendly.
Ricorda come fu aiutata l'Arg. in quel mondiale...
Dutch football is an entertaining style, especially when you consider that they play in Europe where defensive tactics are so important, and where World Cup and Euro qualifications are unforgiving. Lose 2 games out of 10 matches in qualification and you're watching the next tournament at home. Teams in South America can lose 6 out of 18 matches and still make the World Cup. The Dutch could have won in '98 as they outplayed Brazil in their semifinal loss on penalties and could have beaten France.
In 1978 Italy was the strongest and the most spectacular team but they arrived too tired at the match against Holland...in 1982, playing in a a more careful way and alternating many players, WE received the right PRIZE!!!
Had we beaten West Germany in the opening second round game it may have been different in 78....we battered them for 90mins but they held on for 0-0. When we faced Holland in the last group game we had to win because they had a better goal difference, as a result this young Italian team was nervous and didn't play its normal game
What you say is interesting. However see - in 1982 you were even in a worse situation in the second-phase group against Brazil: victory or death (here it is victory or game for the bronze) But in 1982instead of being nervous you made an epic game.
My conclusion from that is that the team in 1978 was not that experienced and psychically ready as in 1982.
Btw if even if you had reached the final in 1978 , do you think that Argentina would allow you (or anyone else) to take the cup?
You're right, the 78 team was inexperienced and I agree with you again, had Italy reached the final no way would they have won against Argentina...it was the same for Holland, they were never going to win the 78 final...what I meant was Italy's 0-0 draw with West Germany in the opening second round game affected their confidence and they didn't play as well in the games against Austria and Holland as they did in the first round
Two minutes before the end of the game West Ger - Austria in 1978 it was 2:2 and Italy was out. Then Krankl scored 3:2 and Italy surpassed W Ger to go to the bronze match.
Besides this, W Ger had the lead against Holl. until 6 minutes before end. Had they kept it, nobody knows what would happen in the last round of matches in this semifinal group.
That`s why such "group formulas" are bulshit. Direct elimination - that` s the way; in direct elimination there are no lousy schemes.
but group formulas also have an advantage: if one team is screwed by the referee in one game, it had still two other games to get the points. in a ko-round this is not possible: you don't get a second chance, injustice can't be compensated.
It seems so, but on the other hand I think that if there is a decision a team to be deliberately failed, it will be failed anyhow. If you pay attention to different cases in the football history , you`ll notice that whenever there`s a story of deliberate failing a team , it`s not because some referee has decided to do so, but because there was an order from "the high floors " and the referee is just the errand-boy.
stupid comment coming from someone who's country loved Mussolini and fascism more than Italy. Go read history you fool, Brits and Americans loved Il Duce. That's why they did not apprehend him and kill him, the way Italian partisans did. They would of probably exiled him and put him to use writing propaganda speeches for them.
Best footballers in the world.... bar none. ARIE HAAN did it twice, look it up....

Btw if even if you had reached the final in 1978 , do you think that Argentina would allow you (or anyone else) to take the cup?
tyzhen 2 years ago
You're right, the 78 team was inexperienced and I agree with you again, had Italy reached the final no way would they have won against Argentina...it was the same for Holland, they were never going to win the 78 final...what I meant was Italy's 0-0 draw with West Germany in the opening second round game affected their confidence and they didn't play as well in the games against Austria and Holland as they did in the first round
stadioazteca 2 years ago
Two minutes before the end of the game West Ger - Austria in 1978 it was 2:2 and Italy was out. Then Krankl scored 3:2 and Italy surpassed W Ger to go to the bronze match.
Besides this, W Ger had the lead against Holl. until 6 minutes before end. Had they kept it, nobody knows what would happen in the last round of matches in this semifinal group.
That`s why such "group formulas" are bulshit. Direct elimination - that` s the way; in direct elimination there are no lousy schemes.
tyzhen 2 years ago
but group formulas also have an advantage: if one team is screwed by the referee in one game, it had still two other games to get the points. in a ko-round this is not possible: you don't get a second chance, injustice can't be compensated.
