He was influenced by Kraut rock, Bowie's Station To Station and Low albums and then Ultravox. Kraftwerk's Man Machine had just been released in 1978 and with the demise of Ultravox in early 1979 it was natural for him to make the transition from punk to an all synth sound. It worked and his success spawned the return of Ultravox and a whole bunch of bands using synths as the main instrument. All Bowie gave us in the 80's was a bunch of boring albums and that bloody Blue Jean film!!
good vid but a bit of lying going on here ,he got his sound from watching ultravox and david bowie too. if you look at the whistle test clip at the begining he's even got billy currie from ultravox on keyboards who was having a break after john foxx left ultravox, john foxx who gary numan worshiped .
I actually love Rene Magritte and it wasnt until a few years back that i realised the album cover was based on his painting...brilliant!..gary has taste
I though he semed a bit down on this interview...his face after the Tubeway Army clip was quite scary....i still think he finds interviews difficult...but we love him!
A bit too short, but still good publicity for the up and coming tour. Shame that, when asked about whether there would be a polymoog on stage, he says "I hope not!". Pity, coming so soon after he played one with Nine Inch Nails too.

I think if I was constantly faced with images of myself when I was 21 I would feel scared and introspective ! Great quality clip
