  • ahah this is a French canadian song written 30 years ago that they change the lyrics.

see for yourself search for "Richard Cocciante", the name song is "Le coup de soleil"

  • This song is damn beautiful.

  • I love you <3 you r my best friend !

  • Mr E is such an inspiration

  • There is a girl i love who has a boyfriend. He's lovely btw, im happy for both of them. Next year my uni course is gonna end, then im gonna move to america for a year, she'll do her third year then she is going to travel the world then move to canada with her bf. Before she goes im going to give her this album and ask her to remember me...

  • @Takablike its alright dude, im in the same situation

  • Im just 13 and I think this song is better than the "music" of my generation. Sincerely.

  • @Kokiriful This the music of your generation... This song is from 2009...

  • @Kokiriful Keep being awesome.

  • Awesome...

  • This is great

  • I've always loved the Eels but I never knew they looked like THE MUPPETS!!! Yayyyy, now I love them even more x

  • What's the difference between this and the second version of VEVO? Is it just the music video?

  • I couldn't dream a better song, especially now...

  • dont whine for a chick, pussy. get over it

  • @Johntpartee douche

  • @Johntpartee douche

  • Thumbs up if cherryblossomgirl brought you here! ;)

  • this song is perfect

  • Genius!!!! The man should be knighted!!! Lovely song

  • No one could explain that feeling better that E.

  • Richard Cocciante !

  • I wonder why people still think underrated is the same as less famous/known... For as far as I know their albums got (very) positive reviews?

  • a broken Greek was here..

  • Any chance of a tour in the UK in 2012 Mr E? PLEASE Mr E. Pretty PLEASE

  • Beautiful One

  • Dude this guy is like 50 years old and he still makes great music.

  • @Kill3RxSmiL3y what did you thought? that live ends at the age of 49?!? once a musician, always a musician... :-P

  • i cant say how mutch i love this song,THX

  • effin love this song

  • Супер!!!!

  • this song makes me feel like a piece of shit...

  • i go to sleep and i dream all night of you knocking at my door...

  • it gives me the same smooth feeling as "hallalujah" of beff buckley, very nice

  • Thumbs up for one of he most underated songwriters of a generation and one of the most underated bands of a generation.

  • @cshartley101 Completely agree. It was the same with his Father. His genius went unrecognised for most of his life, even by E himself.

  • @cshartley101 Blah blah blah. Fucking awesome band. BUT if they were to become popular, you'd be saying "He was so much better before he became mainstream!"

  • @10sup10 You can't just assume that.

  • @cshartley101 yeah they are underated, like Mark's father (Hugh Everett), who was one of the biggest physicist. (The idea of Parallel Universes)

  • he's a bearded rivers cuomo

  • This song sums up my exact feelings for a girl i love to pieces but can never be with, call me "gay" or whatever u want but id give anything to be "that guy" he speaks of,breaks me in two that i cant be :'(. Thank you E and Eels for such heartfelt songs and words,ur great guys :)

  • i can't believe this doesn't have more than a million views, this songwriting is positively Lennon/McCartney-esque

  • This song reminds me about my Erasmus in Leuven (Belgium)

  • One sensational song!

  • He is a genius, especially to have lived through what he has. I love the subtlety of each part in the song. I couldn't help but notice the name Hugh Everett written across a kb or something (a reference to his father). Either for dramatic effect or proving he is still haunted by the memory of him and the rest of the family. Either way, he's a true artist.

  • THIS IS WHAT i CALL PLAGIARISM. Check the song "Le Coup de Soleil" from the italian singer Richard Cocciante. A song from 1980!

  • @prugnosibillino nice song, however just because the chords are the same its not plagiarism, theres only so many chords you can use when writing a song so its inevitable that some songs will have the same chords. The vocal melody line is very different. Look up Axis of Awesome - 4 chords song and you'll see my point.

  • @JulianHertz yeah id say if anything its just lack of talent/skill in the song. like the axis of awesome say, anyone can write a pop hit

  • @kanumbra Well haven't you thought of the lyrics and feeling? Mark Oliver Everett never said he wanted a skilled metal band with fifteen solos (love metal though) in each song!

He wanted to write lyrics that others can see in themselves and in my opinion, he's a genious. Pure Genious cause he has lived through the things that alot of heartbroken people has lived through. And his music has done nothing but change my opinion of life since each time i listen to it, i just think, I'm cool.

  • @ShadeBandet ahaha ok that was just my opinion. but if 'he has lived through the things that a lot of heart broken people have live through' i dont see how that makes him stand out as a genius at all. but look if it makes you feel good then dont give a damn what i think :)

  • @kanumbra Hah, my bad. I meant He's been through all of the bad things a heartbroken person has to go through sooner or later. And provides us with the music so we can see ourselves in it, and therefore helping us. Alot.

  • @prugnosibillino But this song is so much better!

  • @adwolfe12 don't be ridicolous.

  • @prugnosibillino Thanks for pointing this out. But this is a well known chord progression found in many other songs. The begging of "My Way" sung by Frank Sinatra also has a very similar chord progression. I have to agree with others on this one, in popular music there is a limited number of ways that a song could be written in. But I don't think that E stole from anyone, the song is similar in style to his many other songs.

  • one of the stand out tracks from leeds gig

  • I saw them perform this at Brixton Academy last September and I was totally mesmerized. The emotion and deepness of this song just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Genuinely brought a tear to my eye. How E keeps doing it is truly remarkable.

  • i have a beard!

  • Btw, this guitar guy reminds me of the 'Medal Of Honor guy'.

  • Infinite cewlness, does someone know a song even as cewl as this one? Please answer me!

  • @TheFatRaccoon some cool "cewl" songs of EELS': Efils god, fresh blood, packing blankets, fresh feeling, grace kelly blues, Mr. E's beautiful blues, susan's house, lucky day in hell, to lick my boots, I like birds, flyswatter, dirty girl, my beloved monster, bus stop boxer, 3 speed, losing streak, the good old days, novicane for the soul, old shit/new shit, I'm going to stop pretending that I didn't break your heart, I need some sleep....YouTube would crash if I wrote down all their cool songs.

  • this song was really amazing yesterday at rock werchter!

  • @wouterinus yep, they where awesome!!! =)

  • Groovy song and video! Greetings from hippie-land...

  • @x0xRuthx0x i feel exactly the same, adore this song but leaves a very sad feeling inside every time i hear it :(

  • cont...to gain the love, acceptance and companionship of his father. E feels he has big shoes to fill to gain this bond, yet somehow blames himself for the dysfuntional family structure. I realized what this song was truly about (although E is very autobiographical about growing up) in this #1 vid, by the obvious display of Hugh's old desk nameplate.

    Hugh Everett: genius

Mark Oliver Everett: genius having the ability to inspire the intellect of music fans. His father couldn't dream of that.

  • @rutgers1961 *slow clap* Nicely done, I hadn't really thought about it that way before. And to be perfectly honest, I think I like this interpretation more.

  • @DiabolicalGenius39

Nah,it's just a song about unrequited love, lol.

Hey thanks for noticing my post, was wondering if anyone thought I was batshit crazy or onto something deeper than what it appears.

  • @rutgers1961

That's a really interesting interpretation, really adds a much deeper meaning to the song for me

  • cont...In the photo is Niels Bohr, the most renowned scientist in the field. Hugh is smiling (something the dour Hugh didn't do at home) and obviously admiring/enjoying the company of Bohr. Hugh and Bohr eventually shared a long time professional and personal friendship that E wasn't aware of. I feel this song is not about trying to impress the girl as shown in the version # 2 vid (although, certainly E has left the song up to interpretation), but rather the longing E felt in trying....cont.

  • Looking at both 1 & 2 , I've come across with a different interpretation of this song. As any true eels fan knows, E's relationship wasn't close with his father. Hugh Everett was cold and distant with his family. Many years after his death Mark found his father was funloving and close to his colleagues, traits that were not shared in the home. There is an iconic photo (in physics circles) taken at Princeton U in 1955, long before E was born, of Hugh with other brilliant physicists.....cont.

  • Thank youuuuuuu iTunes recommendations!

  • thumbs up if you like Eels - That Look You Give That Guy 1

  • Why would he want to be anyone but him?

  • Great song but i'm sorry to tell you that she's already exist since thirty years...

It's called "le coup de soleil" by richard cocciante. Check yourself...

My mom told me not to steal, it's bad!!!!!

  • @thearcadiansFR Dang thx for that!... although you know with both being based around simple hammering of specific chord progressions, I still give him the benifit of the doubt that this was accidental.

Maybe it's because I also prefer the arangements on the Eels song.

  • @thearcadiansFR well its ok cause that song sucks in comparison to E

  • @thearcadiansFR Thanks for letting us know the origins. I like both versions

  • Beautifully Tortured...

  • Merci, vous êtes mes compagnons BLOCUS pour mes examens! :)

  • I get this song, I really do. I feel the pain :(

    These lyrics are brilliant...

  • Ahhh... "Beautiful Woman" by Toots & the Maytals is the song that goes through my head when I see her, but this song tells the actual story. Both of them are great songs to highlight an otherwise shitty place to be.

  • grace aux petits mouchoirs je connais cette chanson et maintenant je l'

    adore

  • @pokenulimon

Belle chanson mais il y a une très étrange resemblance avec la chanson de Ricardo Cocciante- Coup de soleil ??!!

  • I Actually Think That I Am THAT GUY.... I Never Knew That Someone Had Wrote Such A Beautifully Naive Song About Me .......... Its a Monument Of Hope....

  • alguien tiene la traduccion de esta canción? un día la leí pero no recuerdo donde

  • I hope I can be so bold to say those words out loud.

  • I fell in love with this song since the first time I heard it. That voice!! is so peaceful and wonderful.

I'm workin on mine hahahahahhahah =p

  • i love eels!i love this song!i love this album!

  • I know of this hole in the ground. Its where they will put me. Nice and quite with no sounds. Just me and the dirt around. The epataph, the man who tripped and fell and broke his crown. The man who lived hard and tried but he was never to succeed. He used to drink the wine, he used to smoke the weed. Something changed, and all he did was sit and think, read and write. He would write songs for us to see. But all we did was try to make him unhappy. Lucky where we to be aloud to see happy

  • "I'm nothing like what i'd like to be, I'm nothing much I know it's true"

Such deep lyrics because everyone, may or may not realise it, can relate to those words. Deep down everyone wants to be a little better.

  • I love this song. Its real.

  • I like how the drummer sits towards the others :)

  • i miss my boyfriend.. :(

  • id have to let my girl go, if i saw a look in her eyes when she was looking at another guy, that i had never seen her give me..... it would be hard but it would be for the best.

  • @beccullity no, you couldn't. or I couldn't anyway, guess you're a better person than me.

  • dudes just playing ....wowza

  • Tune!

  • LOL with Alfa here. Music progressions! Sure there are a few more tunes that have pretty much the same one too. But I don't think E ever heard Riccardo. But then Maybe E is a parallel Riccardo?!

  • Please go and listen Riccardo Cocciante "le coup de soleil", it's the same song except that the other if from.... 1975!!!

  • the number showing on my ipod for "times played" for this song = 257 ,and i still cant get enough.

  • @0Mastro0 lol, theyre gonna be playing near my town soon. i gotta buy tickets!

I don't see how you could get any closer to perfection

  • Without a doubt the best song on the album. Really beautiful.

  • Perfect song.

  • I've this song on repeat all night and it only gets the better the more I listen to it

  • I'm going to see this wonderful band and hear that awesome voice on the 13th yay ...love your honesty E

  • This sounds a lot like a remake of an old bad french song called "Coup de soleil" by RIchard Cocciante...

  • This song is so beautiful. I wish there was a guy out there that felt this way about me.

  • this morning i listened to this song, then bought the album. i freakin love this song! and band!

  • @snurkify

Im not talking about historical processes, or influences because you're right its not relevant. Just saying that Beatles are appreciated with good reason and they certainly do not lack "that emotional touch".

  • You've got it all mixed up man! Beatles are appreciated because before they came along no mainstream music had an emotional touch. Im not talking about the early "hold my hand", "love me, love me" stuff obviously. This track is pretty Beatlesque, alot more straight up than the Beatles though!

  • @snurkify Lol these guys sound ALOT like the beatles actually. It almost sounds like they're covering the beatles

  • Got my ticket for these guys! gonna be awesome

  • eels that look you give that guy
