One of my favourite Police songs, and I can't for the life of me tell you why. It brings to mind images of a clan of pirates and the guy is sacrificing himself for a women, either being burnt at the stake or walking the plank... I love it.
There is something about this song that is just hypnotising.. I don't know what it is but I when it comes on I have to stop everything just to listen and be in that moment. I just love it.

This song was going to be released on "zenyatta mondatta", but the didn´t, I think if that would be released then it would be a Police song and not sting (you know what i mean). I really love The police and all rheir members, but i think the better composer is Sting, and there was a lot of fights about who put more songs on the album, I know thats the most important reason why Sting start to feel bored in that band. Composers fight for your talent agains the weak minds
@tadeo1976 without the members of the police, sting would be known only as gordon sumner, the english teacher... they cajoled him into joining the band. please dont forget that. andy summer and stewart copeland are just as important to the police as sting. sting is the creative force, but without those guys, we wouldnt know who the fuck 'sting' was. get my drift?
@OralAgreement69 I know, Was Stewart idea of trio band, also the kind of music to do, the energy.. was all contribution of Stewart.. but Sting never reconize at that time, He felt superior as God
@tadeo1976 Some sources state that the song existed around time of Reggatta, but that they decided together that it wasn't suitable for the band at the time. Zenyatta then brought in the fights Sting coming up with idea of using his demos added up only with Copeland's drum parts. Producer Nigel Gray balked the idea requesting a decent band album thus driving Sting back against the wall.
I'm glad this version was posted. Although I love Omar Hakim, I'm not a big fan of ANY drum solos and didn't really like his drum part on the remake of this song. I'm just a weird drummer who doesn't like solos! ;-P
As carliboy908 said, this song does "ooze sex and desire"... I just wish that the instrumental "coda" at the end wasn't so repetetive and long, or that there would have been at least one more stanza of lyrics to break it up...
Thank you for the excellent quality of this song-----I was an 80's kid who really liked The Police, I really liked this song. I think it was from the "Brimstome and Treacle" soundtrack that Sting acted in-----an odd, very British, sort of entertaining film. This is a great song regardless of the circumstances.
Fucking stunning! Dark and sexy... no, sensual, menacing, pending ecstasy in the middle of the song then you get down to the business of getting to it. LOVE this song.
"...in the shade of your parasol..." Who bothers to write lyrics like this anymore? And then come the drums...great...One of my Police faves, and this version is so hard to find...thanks...
"...in the shade of your parasol..." Who bothers to write lyrics like this anymore? Probably one of my Police faves, and this version is so hard to find...thanks...
@ melonnell... i want to see it so bad.. i understand that sting is not such a desirable guy in it... i have been waiting to see it for about 12-13 years... had actually heard a song or two off of it but didnt know it was a movie... when i found the record... been looking ever since
@melonnell123 i have tried to find this movie.. with no luck... i bought the record at a used record shop in louisvlle about 10... 12.years ago.. would love to see the music with the movie...
@jenirocksotb - I happened to tape the film on VHS years ago but I bought it from Amazon.co.uk. recently. It's one of those 'cult' movies so be careful when/if you purchase it - cos of DVD codes. Well worth buying. 1st class cast of actors too!
i fell in love with this song when it came out... i went out and bought Brimstone & Treacle, even though i had no idea what the movie was and haven't seen it even to this day....i don't like any other version of it as much as i do this, the original.... thank you so much for posting it on here....
che dire del video... un po' "statico". La canzone invece credevo che fosse del periodo solista di Sting. il sapere che l'ha fatta coi Police è stata una bella scoperta.
The second half of the song, I've tried cutting the song in half and only using the 2nd half, its great for a surf movie, I haven't uploaded the video with this song yet, but it goes great with pretty much any surf video :)
I heard a great version of this song on the " Bring on the Night " soundtrack. It has an insane drum solo in the middle from Omar Hakim. This is one of my favorite songs ever!
Sting is a bass god. Channelfunk and I must be on the same vibe. I just used the word 'haunting' in posting a comment to another version of this song and also enjoy losing myself in How Stupid Mr Bates. Great stuff to be sure.
I love this song so much for its haunting and beautiful melody and words. It's the sort of song that haunts for you for a long time. I remember this in Brimstone and Treacle which I actually quite liked as a film. And I loved How Stupid Mister Bates! Now that's a song that stays with you!
Interestingly, I once found the actual play in the library. When describing Sting's character Martin Potter says "He is the devil, or at least he thinks he is."
I am not ashamed to say that I still own the Brimstone and Treacle soundtrack on cassette!...This song is sexy, dark and haunting...even tantric...like an obsessive eternal love poem, the film stays with you for a long time too. =)
The song called "i burn for you" was still a track of Last Exit. Is this the same? Actually ive listened a few songs from Last Exit and I love it.. for me Sting has proved most of his talent and energy in those early 70`s and jazzy-dissonant sound.
I agree. One of the better Police songs, and most ignored. Sting's voice seductive. The bass and guitar like the tolling of a bell. Hypnotic. When I was a teen, I used to lie in front of my parents old record player and play and replay this track.
I have this album and love it! This is the best version of this song! Thanks for posting. Sting plays a creepy, disturbed, and dark character in this movie, Brimstone and Treacle. He's very convincing. The movie is strange but is very good. If you love Sting, you'll probably like the movie. FYI, I later found out that treacle is a dark syrup that Brits put on toast or crackers...not being British, I didn't know what that was for the longest time.
I disagree-I much prefer this version. It is darker and sexier...sounds like a man driven by an obsessional passion. Very very sexy. The BOTN version is watered down, in my opinion.
I have to go with this version by The Police. This song has always given me chills and is extremely haunting. I love the dark side of The Police. And yes, Stewart's drumming on the second half sounds incredible. Plus I dig the little yells and things the guys are doing at the end. Sound like pirates or something. Very cool stuff.
I have a feeling xensboy you will find that, btw I saw Sting live in a stadium concert in 90ies, he was awesome and there wasnt even one additional show during to support his performance, he is amazing....
Police expert Phil Sutcliffe tells that he once saw Sting mesmerizing the audience in a Newcastle pub before he was in The Police, putting evryone's hairs on end.
I have the feeling that this recording, wonderful as it is, doesn't quite capture the full power of the song. It's great that we have this and the live solo versions, but oh for a video of the performance at that pub.
man, there is a fantastic live performance of this song right here on youtube. Omar Hakim is literally burning towards the end of the song...fantastic group with the late Kenny Kirland, Brandford Marsalis, Omar Hakim...It's a great song and the original version with The Police is awesome.
Holy cow, I remember the chorus or whatever in 3:39 and b4 and after!! That part of this song was from "Everyone Stares- The Police inside out. I saw it the other day!!
This is good but not the best police song I've heard...I can kinda c y it was just 4 a soundtrack and not on "Ghost in the Machine" or "Synchronicity" but right in between.
I have the VHS of Brimstone and Treacle. The box indicates that songs were contributed by Sting, the Police, Squeeze and the Go-Go's. The credits document only so much.
You can buy this movie on DVD through Amazon. I bought it recently. Sting is great in this movie. I don't think of these as Police songs. Sting wrote I Burn for You prior to Police.
This is my all time favorite Police song. However, you are wrong. This song was not nor has it ever been on the Synchronicity album. It is from the soundtrack of a 1982 film called Brimstone and Treacle, in which Sting co-starred. The film is out of print, but you can rent it on Netflix.
Thank you, thank you!! The only other "I Burn For You" video that I favorited has since disappeared...and was one featuring stills of a girl wearing almost nothing, LOL Not was I was looking for. I do think I like the version on Sting's Victoria's Secret CD a little better but was happy to find this.
I like both versions but this one is so haunting... very intense.

The Police do play this song. It is shown in the everyone stare's film. Just listen to the drums, that's Stewart for sure.

That sure sounds like Andy on guitar, too.
