  • ever seen a grown man cry. ?.....sob,sob....sooooooo beautiful!!!

  • Jesus.... a great man to murder a great song!!!!

    Guy Dead... shocking!

    Luke Kelly - What a Legend :)

  • there really is no point in comparing them, fair play to damien for continuing the great tradition, having sen both of them perform live i can only say that damien is good, at times he's very good but luke was OUTSTANDING.

  • what a shower of narrow minded f**kers, the 24 sacks of shite that disliked this lovely song.............. WTF????

  • He did a good job !

Heaven forbid Bono would try and sing this.

  • Ok I wont listen to any more music on utube thank you for that ..just cos u dont agree with what I write ..But I still wouldnt go out of my way to listen to him..

  • @Thevoiceofreasonful DATS COZ UR TASTE IN MUSIC IS SHITE....OFF YE GO AN LISTEN 2 GAGA...WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • Kelly sang the song without effort..This guy sounds like he is fighting for the melody..

  • @shellyfatarse ....get 2 steppin ye slag...damo fuckin rocks, why d'ya think Lukes fellow band mates wanted 2 work wit him so badly??? Granted Luke an Damo r very different but der bought BRILLIANT IRISH SINGERS.....an here if ye dont like it y listen???

  • Luke and Damien are both excellent in their own right, why do they have to be compared with each other? They are both a credit and a great source of pride to all trad lovin Dubs!

  • Poor bitter twisted Sinead was merely looking for a reaction. She knows she was talking nonsense. She just needs our sympathy and understanding. Damien is good but enough with the pointless comparisons.

  • I think alot of people are missing the point here .

Who said what, Who said damo's better blah blah

What's important here is that Mr.Dempsey is bringing these songs to new audience of young people, I hav loaned 'the rocky road' to a few people who thought it sounded good, that's where there interest in Luke and the dubliners etc.. stems from !

    Good on ya Damo !

  • @Irishtrucker580 well said!!!!

  • @Irishtrucker580 well said!!!!

  • Well done Damo great job...

  • Doing his best, but not in the same league as Mr Luke Kelly, who was simply the greatest ever.

  • What Sinead actually said was "He takes the traditional singers 'LIKE Luke Kelly' & mops the floor with them." It wasn't a slur on Luke Kelly or Paul Brady, Ronnie Drew or Liam Clancy, It was high praise for Damo. She referred to his passionate Irish intensity & Shane feels the same way!! Damo stands with the greatest traditional singers & has a hard edge--like a big healthy Shane! I can't presume to judge Irishness but trust Shane & Sinead on it. Damo's Rocky Rd. to D. is the best!

  • @OutlawMinniePearl I really don't see how that's less insulting. You can praise someone without insulting everyone else. The fact is Damien is far from the best Irish singer as we all know. She was talking through her arse looking for a reaction, there's no way she actually thinks that

  • Being the milestone of greatness is an achievement in itself. Sinéad could have named many great Irish singers--there's no shortage & she chose Luke. 'Mops the floor with him' isn't nice, ok. Sinéad's colorful & direct words are often disparaged but usually true. DAMO IS A STEP BEYOND THE GREATEST SINGERS. Says who? The other great singers! Damo sees past the suffering & offers a positive path for the future. His energy & passion are boundless, the audience sings along 'cause it's THEIR story!!!

  • @OutlawMinniePearl I like Damo, he's a great songwriter and good honest musician unlike so many others who turn these songs into tourist shite. But anyone who says he's a great singer is deluded, or has their own reasons for saying it. To try and compare him with Luke, purely in terms of voice I mean, is ridiculous. As a rule it's unfair to compare anyone with Luke, no-one has sung like him before or since, but Sinead started it

  • @tony10396861 They are BOTH great, that is not disputed. That Damo is a whole new breed does not detract from Luke's greatness. People are so obsessed with Sinéad's imagery that they miss her point entirely. Sinéad, Shane, Christy & many others share my views on DAMO. I LOVE Damo's rich, resonant passionate nuanced voice. I love the message of his songs. He does the best Rocky Road EVER, he's got a pair of lungs! You are free to like Luke better but we're all entitled to seek our own bliss.

  • @OutlawMinniePearl To be honest a lot of people would dispute that Damo is great, a lot of people seem to have it in for him for whatever reason. Passionate certainly, but rich or resonant are not words I'd use to describe his voice. It's very high pitched, a bit weedy and weak. He does not do the best Rocky road. You're free to love him as much as you clearly do, but come on don't kid yourself he's just not the best singer!!

  • Tony, Damo is a singer & SO MUCH MORE, he is a poet & a visionary & a LEADER. He is a one-man Mandela Truth Commission set to music. The anger is channeled, it's mostly acknowledgement & forgiveness & a fierce will to move on & above all a stubborn optimism that the future will be better. I applaud Luke's social justice work too. But Damo has taken it to a new level, he has become the people's heart. Shane & Sinéad see this. I LOVE his RR but we're talking about apples & oranges I think.

  • @OutlawMinniePearl Ah look I just don't see it, we're clearly not going to agree. I don't agree that he has taken anything to a new level. Luke moved people all over the world; How many foreigners have even heard of Damo? Irish people have an affinity and affection for Luke and the Dubliners that he can't hope to match in a million years. Apples and oranges, fair enough; that's why Sineads comment was so moronic

  • Damo's greatness doesn't diminish Luke's & I wish you could quit seeing them as competitors! Damo has not yet achieved Luke's level of fame around the world but he's still quite young. Damo is well known & well loved in the lands populated by the diaspora & I suspect the larger world will love him eventually. Being recognized by the world isn't what defines greatness anyway. I wish Sinéad had phrased it differently because the remark has caused so much unintended pain. I apologize for her!!!

  • @OutlawMinniePearl I don't see them as competitors

  • Tony, Inspired by your devotion--YOU LOVE LUKE THE WAY I LOVE BILLY JOE SHAVER & I respect that--I went Luke surfing & discovered his DEFINITIVE Foggy Dew. I stand corrected. I still love Damo madly of course but they're most surely apples & oranges or maybe apple & grapefruit since Damo's so husky. I understand you were responding to Sinéad's comment PERIOD & that not even Damo mops the floor with him! Did Luke ever do Spancil Hill or Eileen Aroon or the Parting Glass? I hope so. Thanks!

  • @tony10396861 man luke kelly was my idol, he most definately is the voice of ireland.. but be grateful that dempsey is keeping this great music alive.. No need to compare them ...luke done what he loved and moved the world, damien writes beautiful music and shares this beautiful music also he carries on this great tradition.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!! GMAN DAMIAN BOY KEEP IT UP!!!! FUKIN DONN RUA LIKE!!! LUKE PADRAIC AND EAMON LIIIIKE! PLAYIN AWAYINTO THE SUN !!!!! D BAYYYYYYZZZZZZ!! YUP!!! HUP !!!!

  • nobody wipes nobody music is taste ilove luke kelly this daimen brings his own touch i love his version what do u like strawberry or blueberry

  • My friend in Co Kerry does a much better rendition

  • not bad but not luke kelly

  • It seems to me that he's simply trying to copy Luke; to me it's very noticeable.

  • tupacs version is way a head of this 1 r.i.p luke smelly

  • This is a decent version, it gets better as it goes on ................ but no way better thna the original

  • This is a decent version, it gets better as it goes on ................ but no way better thna the original

  • lets be honest, damo is good in his own right but hes never goin t have a patch on luke, hes untouchable by any standards

  • its a matter of opinion folks, pure and simple. they are both equally legends in their own right, Damo and Luke.

  • He doesn't sing to try to better than Luke Kelly. It's for the love of the music.

  • Crap, Kelly would turn in his grave

  • @x246a you are right - dont understand why the Dubliners will play with him

  • terrible

  • He's quite a singer. Very pure voice.

  • I don't know what all this shite is about comparing damien to luke.

Such a comparison cannot be made, and im sure damien would tell you that himself.

What i believe is important here is that the songs are being kept alive, and shown to a new generation which is very important so as these song will be kept alive ,something that luke would commend damo for doing!

  • lahy16 is bang on. Why bother comparing them? We will never see the like of Luke again. We all know that. But let's just enjoy this for what it is. A beautiful piece of music sung by a great singer.

  • its not bad, but he isnt the same type of singer as luke kelly. that oconner slap head is an idiot and her version of scorn not his simplicity is plop. the same as her version of the only song she has been successful with, nothing compare to you. kojak did

  • I think he is a fantastic singer. Great song, thanks a lot.

  • god bless luke rest in peace we all miss u

  • i agree this man cant sing..luke kelly was the best ballad singer of our time...r.i.p luke...ps.ill bust damiens head if i come across him..that was a personal song 2 u luke......u cunt damien....

  • great job damo

  • Singing lessons would help.

  • Bullshit. Pity you can't recognize talent

  • Great version of a majestic song.

  • honest..im a balladeer all my life..luke kelly was one of the greatest singer ireland has ever seen..but i really think damien dempsey cant sing ballads..he is the kind of singer you hear in pubs at end of the night when there drunk and sound stupid...on a scale of 1 to 10 id rate him 2.he needs to do a lot of work to make it.

  • @GREGLILL I've seen your videos, you're no balladeer.

  • mcanner ur a retard. Luke RIP

  • mcanner are u still goin on about this its about a year since i watched this video an u were going on about the same shit get a life an fuck off

  • Iahy16 have to agree wit wat u say if its irish love it

dont be slaggin damo hes a ledgand and has real music talant along with alot of others luvin da fact dat he hasnt lost da dub accent in his singin

    wat a man

  • What is the point in comparing Damo and Luke? They're both ours and both brilliant. To those who say Luke was a better singer, the counter argument is that Damo writes his own stuff and it's out on it's own in terms of content, but yes Luke's voice will never be equalled. The key thing is that someone carry's irish music through the generations and Damo is doing that while remaining authentic. Both legends, both dubs, both irish. THAT A BOY DAMO!

  • @lahy16 bang on! well said. i only wish id seen luke sing live, so thank god for youtube!

  • and theres liam clancy and christy moore 2 so wev got it all

  • well Done Damien great job and justice to this beautiful song

  • fantastic job

  • brilliant version

  • You can't compare Damo with Luke. Luke was a powerhouse tenor who could sing anything, ballads, sea shanties, drinking songs. Damo is a unique singer whose style is closer to the Irish tradition. This is an English ballad, perhaps not best suited to his voice. Great effort though.

  • Damien Dempsey is doing a great job at keeping Irish music stronger than ever. Luke Kelly would be massively proud of him. He is a great great poet, musician, artist, entertainer and a genuine guy with no airs or graces or shite. The sooner we all, as a nation, get behind this man, the quicker hes gona get the global recognition he deserves, coz hes gona be huge eventually anyway. Its true, Damos no luke, but I tell ye, no matter how great luke was, hes no damo either. And so were spoiled!

  • Agree 100%, In the 80s/early 90s songs like this and others from the dublin city ramblers/dubliners etc used to make the charts.. but when do you ever hear proper music like this on the radio these days? Never.

  • I think this is a good live version, the studio version is better though. Big Damien fan here.

  • This man is just kind of shouting the lyrics.... Luke was singing them...... It's always a matter of taste off course, but he doesn't even come near to Luke Kelly and does not do much good to this beautiful song...

  • To try this Luke Kelly classic is to flirt with danger. However, this is a very respectable version and I think the guy is ballsie to try - and accomplishe the task. A solid job, and the song should not die just because Luke has.

  • a good version. fair play damo

  • I am a big Damien fan, this 1 not for him. defo.

  • Give the man a break, I'm as big a Luke Kelly fan as the next, but I think Damien does a solid job on this, obviously he's not gonna sound as great Luke but who ever has?

  • i'd sing it betr meself ....e's no luke

  • The other songs he sings with the dubliners are very good but his voice is not powerful enough for this.

  • You should hear his version of Kelly the boy from killane, awful stuff

  • No matter who sang it would be no comparrision to Luke but still is a great version and would download it if it was available

  • Great fan of Damiens this song not for him though.

  • i dont think damien was tryin to compete with luke in this video he's only singin the song.

  • i think its good...people keep saying its not a spec on luke but sure thats a given..luke was a legend who was unique and i doubt we will ever see the likes of him again.but still its not bad.i think luke would have appreciated this.

  • Agree with you 6shang. No point in trying to copy luke but this is a nice version. i like damo's voice. think luke wld have liked it.

  • not a spec on luke sounds awful

  • damo dempsey is an unbelievably talented musician one of my fav's and he does a really great job on this song, this was the first song i heard him song on coulter and company.its amazing

  • just remember that Luke never had half an orchestra behind him like Damien in this clip!!absolutely no contest.

  • who said i was comparing him to luke kelly, i just said he done a great job on the song, you people need to move on and stop livin in the past . luke kelly is gone.

  • Yes gone, but Luke will never be forgotten by (you people)us.

  • a nice tribute to Luke.

  • well done damo , love to see u mouth pieces even try sing like damo , tossers , god bless ya damo , keep up the gud work

  • You obvoiusly can't compare the man to Luke but it's not bad, and if the boys allow him to sing with them that says enough

  • obviously luke sings this much better, but i think damien does a good job.

  • proves a point, there is only one luke kelly this is painfull.

  • holy fuck am i the olny one thought he made a mess of this song

  • Nope, I do too.

  • to walk in your shoes for a day is my desire .. congrates damo..wot a great voice

  • Damien I will give you 5 stars

  • love the song, no one will ever beat luke. Damiens version on his rocky road album is much better than this

  • wow i didnt know people had such negative feelings about Phil Coulter... i suppose he's a bit of a sell out... how did he screw over Planxty?

  • dubb1995 is defo rite nobody can "wipe the floor" with luke kelly hes de best ting to ever come out of ireland

  • I heard Sinead o'Connor say recently that as a singer, Damien Dempsey "wipes the floor" with Luke Kelly. I always suspected she wasn't quite right in the head, and that comment finally proved it. I have nothing against Damien, but Luke Kelly was in an absolute league of his own.

  • you rite man how can you compare anyone to luke

  • If she did in fact say that... she's silly.

  • she did say it, i seen the vid, used to be here on youtube.

  • Oh please, she's NUTS. This guy is *struggling* to get through this song.

Ole Luke would sing it 10 TIMES more powerful and as effortless as me typing these words. He can't hold a candle to Luke.

  • Ja you`re so right, i was thinking the same, this guy is sooo concentrated and Luke did it so naturally.

Besides, he doesn`t have THAT Irish accent that we foreign people love so much.

  • I seen that vid also.

lol wipe the floor with luke, like that would even be possible!

  • I can't believe Sinead can really have said that? She must have had a moment of madness. Dempsey is ok as a singer, maybe almost as good as he thinks he is. But Luke was incomparable; he touched and moved people from all over the world.

  • Does anyone have any idea when this show went on air?

  • jesus this is class!!!!!!!!

  • I think this is a very good version, Damien sounds alot better than when he tries 2 have the Deep Dublin Accent when he sings his own songs, very well sang here. Great stuff

  • Looks like Coulter (the snake) has set Dempsey up here. The keys too high, and the arrangement is over-done!! If Damien has any vocal ability (and lots of people think he has)....... it certainly does not show here. The other track, "Schooldays Over", is too high aswell. Has Coulter lost the plot? Maybe its his conscience : )

  • What are you alluding to here? just what are your musical qualifications? what does THE SNAKE mean ...or are you trying to politicise even this. Jesus I wish you assholes would get over yourselves and just enjoy the performance...wanker.

  • To bobwaits (the man with all the questions) ............ Ask your sister!!

  • Yawn...yawn. The old gags are the best ...eh Jim. What a class act you are.

  • Good to see you are capable of posting, at least one comment, without using foul and obscene language. Well done Bob!! Now feck off.

  • coulter is a snakey fuck indeed.

  • phil coulter, what a prick. for someone who wrote some great songs includin Town I Loved so Well he is such a pompous twat. i only heard recently how he fucked over Planxty with their records. dubliners and damo are ace though

  • too right coulter is a cunt. he is a complete sell-out. this is a great version of night visiting

  • What do you know about Phil Coulter....asshole

  • well I know that he is a prick...is that enough bob?

  • A very good rendition of a beautiful folk song. It's unfair to compare it with Luke Kelly's version, although that's only natural for people to think in that way. Any singer suffers in comparison to Luke Kelly, since you're comparing them with the voice of God. RIP Luke.

  • too true

  • bang on damo

    bang on

  • Yes Damien certainly does this song justice with his strong and passionate vocals.

I also do not see why people would want to compare Damien with Luke Kelly.

Luke was a great singer and a musical legend. Damien is a great singer also.

Damien is my 4th cousin by the way, though we have never met!

Great stuff Damien, I really like your work!

  • This is the first time I've heard of Damien Dempsey, and I know I will hear more of him.He can really belt out a tune.Great stuff!!

  • the accent, haha. Its pure dublin. he has a think dublin accent.

  • Is he Belgian or something? You'd think "Dempsey" is Irish. No offense, I just cant place that accent???

  • pure raw dublin. its what makes damo

  • dublin accent kid

  • Damien the world weeps when you sing, your pure class a natural tresure.

  • What the hell is folks problem comparing Damien to Luke. They are two totally different artists. If ye knew anything of Damiens music you would know that. He is by the far the best thing musically to break out of Ireland in recent years. Cant ye wish him luck ffs. Go see him live.....his performances are built on honesty, emotion and talent most artists could only dream about. Luke Kelly was an incredible artist too Lord rest him.

  • Here! here!..everyone should realise what he is and that is a damn good, raw, honest, powerful, passionate singer who sings for his cause and people..thats who Damien Dempsey is and if there is comparisons made between him and another great Irish singer Luke Kelly well then Damo would be certainly humbled and chuffed. Is mise John Paul

  • You said it in one. No one could have had put it better my man.

  • Comment removed

  • First time ive heard that bloke , damn good

  • The progession in this song is magic...just gets louder & louder as each instrument comes in. Great

  • i love that man! brilliant cover he has the voice for it, go on the damo!

  • I can't joke. That guy really makes my stomach churn now.

  • We all know that he is nowhere near luke kelly as a singer, but give him credit for keeping these brilliant songs going.

  • Its less appropriate than when 3 beautiful corrs where singing the lyric "this boy is cracking up"

i wish damien rice awayed himself without tarry then that song would be approriate

  • please dont get in2 a silly slaggin match of who was better, luke or damien!! dempsey obviously appreciates the magic of kelly as much as the rest of us,he was 1 of his main inspirations in life, look at dempseys face at very end of song, looks quite emotional2me,he knows very well the importance of this song, please b grateful 2the man 4tryin 2keep this music alive rather than the other rubbish always on the airwaves!!!!!!!!

  • This song is very emotional for many of Luke's fans as it was his final performance. You can see this in the responses. Yet the arrangement is well put together.

Phil, Barney and John were among Luke's closest friends and looking at their faces you can tell that we should weep for the loss of Luke and then shout for joy at his memory.

    Slan go foill!

  • class

  • i think he is so so class can't wait to go see him

  • He lacks the power that luke kelly had in his voice

  • This is a brillant version of this song.. However nobody can match the voice of the late Luke Kelly who is sadly missed... I admire Damien Dempsey in this respect for keeping the songs of Luke Kelly alive.

  • Shut up ye spa, Its ok. Not near Luke's version.

  • wow i wasn't expecting that. i had grown up listening to luke kelly's version, but i can faithfully say this is as good or better. his voice is perfectly suited for this poignant song.

  • that was a1 sharon. brilliant

  • i have been looking for this song for a long time, this is the first song i ever heard damien sing and it blew me away, he sings with such passion and soul with his own style not trying to sing like the great luke kelly but just the great damo dempsey, he is one of the most original irish artists around.

    great post thanks for it.

  • Another moron.

  • KingElvis

  • no1 can better luke kelly on this, but this is probably as close as you'll get. but two completely different styles

  • I prefer the version by Kelly, but that's not to say this guy is awful, nothing of the sort, he at least knows the proper tempo this song should be sang in

  • Damo in his own right is a brilliant unique singer and musician. The man is forever being hailed by other Irish Musicians, who've been around years and would know more about Irish music than any one of us. He definetly would not be up there singing with the Dubliners, with Christy Moore and with Sharon Shannon if he was 'Bloody awful!!!'.

  • well done damo, an absolutely beautiful version of this song!! luke would be proud

  • Beautiful rendition of this song. If you nay-saying, do-nothing wankers had a thimble full of the heart and talent this bloke has you wouldn't be spending your waking hours making negative comments on You Tube

Those who can - do. Those who can't - critique

  • well said "passionate and powerful", singing is not just havin a great voice, its also about Delivery, bob dylan would not be classed as a great singer..... nice version damo

  • Are you deaf? Iv goose pimples listenin to that!! Damo is a living legend, passionate and powerful

  • another fine VERSION of this song....Damien brings youthfulness and a certain gentleness to this beautiful ballad.....a timeless piece that transcends generations and singers....the song alone stand on its on merit....beautifully sung here by another fine singer....

  • do you lot think that barney and john etc would be there if they thought he was shite, he is no luke kelly but fuck sake wind your neck in you bunch of wankers

  • jesus, i know everyone with a euro and two cents has said it, but they're both great singers. it's not a fucking competition. and if you think it is, you just don't get it. if u don't like it, don't listen. listen to what floats your boat. no need to shit on it.

  • Why can't people leave certain songs alone ? I actually like Damien, but he's ruined that song. You'd think he'd have known better.

  • Well done Damo......for ruining the song!

  • im a damo fan and he wouldnt come close to luke.luke was an insperation to damo.damein dempsey is a great irish singer prob d best out there now but dont mention his name in d same sentence as lukes damo is great but luke is d best .

  • Don't be silly theboyme82, Damo is a great singer as was Luke. Why the need to attack Luke? Stick to the praise man.

  • your gettin urt self mixed up u gobshite

  • why would you go and say something like that about luke kelly and make a fool out of yourself, luke kelly was the best folk singer in the world ,EVER, and always will be, damien dempsey would tell you the same if you asked, now go fuck urslef somewhere ur not botherin people, cocksmoker

  • luke kelly a two bit pub singer?? you are a fucking dickhead of the highest order if you really think that, luke kelly was a genius god rest his soul, an irish hero!!!

  • Two bit pub singer???

There isnt a balladeer alive or dead that doesnt/didnt wish they were half the legend luke is!!!
