What is the point in comparing Damo and Luke? They're both ours and both brilliant. To those who say Luke was a better singer, the counter argument is that Damo writes his own stuff and it's out on it's own in terms of content, but yes Luke's voice will never be equalled. The key thing is that someone carry's irish music through the generations and Damo is doing that while remaining authentic. Both legends, both dubs, both irish. THAT A BOY DAMO!
You can't compare Damo with Luke. Luke was a powerhouse tenor who could sing anything, ballads, sea shanties, drinking songs. Damo is a unique singer whose style is closer to the Irish tradition. This is an English ballad, perhaps not best suited to his voice. Great effort though.
Damien Dempsey is doing a great job at keeping Irish music stronger than ever. Luke Kelly would be massively proud of him. He is a great great poet, musician, artist, entertainer and a genuine guy with no airs or graces or shite. The sooner we all, as a nation, get behind this man, the quicker hes gona get the global recognition he deserves, coz hes gona be huge eventually anyway. I heard Sinead o'Connor say recently that as a singer, Damien Dempsey "wipes the floor" with Luke Kelly. I always suspected she wasn't quite right in the head, and that comment finally proved it. I have nothing against Damien, but Luke Kelly was in an absolute league of his own.
I can't believe Sinead can really have said that? She must have had a moment of madness. Dempsey is ok as a singer, maybe almost as good as he thinks he is. But Luke was incomparable; he touched and moved people from all over the world.

What is the point in comparing Damo and Luke? They're both ours and both brilliant. To those who say Luke was a better singer, the counter argument is that Damo writes his own stuff and it's out on it's own in terms of content, but yes Luke's voice will never be equalled. The key thing is that someone carry's irish music through the generations and Damo is doing that while remaining authentic. Both legends, both dubs, both irish. THAT A BOY DAMO!

You can't compare Damo with Luke. Luke was a powerhouse tenor who could sing anything, ballads, sea shanties, drinking songs. Damo is a unique singer whose style is closer to the Irish tradition. This is an English ballad, perhaps not best suited to his voice. Great effort though.

Damien Dempsey is doing a great job at keeping Irish music stronger than ever. Luke Kelly would be massively proud of him. He is a great great poet, musician, artist, entertainer and a genuine guy with no airs or graces or shite. The sooner we all, as a nation, get behind this man, the quicker hes gona get the global recognition he deserves, coz hes gona be huge eventually anyway. Its true, Damos no luke, but I tell ye, no matter how great luke was, hes no damo either. And so were spoiled!

Agree 100%, In the 80s/early 90s songs like this and others from the dublin city ramblers/dubliners etc used to make the charts.. but when do you ever hear proper music like this on the radio these days? Never.

To try this Luke Kelly classic is to flirt with danger. However, this is a very respectable version and I think the guy is ballsie to try - and accomplishe the task. A solid job, and the song should not die just because Luke has.

I heard Sinead o'Connor say recently that as a singer, Damien Dempsey "wipes the floor" with Luke Kelly. I always suspected she wasn't quite right in the head, and that comment finally proved it. I have nothing against Damien, but Luke Kelly was in an absolute league of his own.

I can't believe Sinead can really have said that? She must have had a moment of madness. Dempsey is ok as a singer, maybe almost as good as he thinks he is. But Luke was incomparable; he touched and moved people from all over the world.

I think this is a very good version, Damien sounds alot better than when he tries 2 have the Deep Dublin Accent when he sings his own songs, very well sang here. Great stuff

Looks like Coulter (the snake) has set Dempsey up here. The keys too high, and the arrangement is over-done!! If Damien has any vocal ability (and lots of people think he has)....... it certainly does not show here. The other track, "Schooldays Over", is too high aswell. Has Coulter lost the plot? Maybe its his conscience : )

A very good rendition of a beautiful folk song. It's unfair to compare it with Luke Kelly's version, although that's only natural for people to think in that way. Any singer suffers in comparison to Luke Kelly, since you're comparing them with the voice of God. RIP Luke.

What the hell is folks problem comparing Damien to Luke. They are two totally different artists. If ye knew anything of Damiens music you would know that. He is by the far the best thing musically to break out of Ireland in recent years. Cant ye wish him luck ffs. Go see him live.....his performances are built on honesty, emotion and talent most artists could only dream about. Luke Kelly was an incredible artist too Lord rest him.

This song is very emotional for many of Luke's fans as it was his final performance. You can see this in the responses. Yet the arrangement is well put together.
Phil, Barney and John were among Luke's closest friends and looking at their faces you can tell that we should weep for the loss of Luke and then shout for joy at his memory.

This is a brillant version of this song.. However nobody can match the voice of the late Luke Kelly who is sadly missed... I admire Damien Dempsey in this respect for keeping the songs of Luke Kelly alive.

i have been looking for this song for a long time, this is the first song i ever heard damien sing and it blew me away, he sings with such passion and soul with his own style not trying to sing like the great luke kelly but just the great damo dempsey, he is one of the most original irish artists around.

Damo in his own right is a brilliant unique singer and musician. The man is forever being hailed by other Irish Musicians, who've been around years and would know more about Irish music than any one of us. He definetly would not be up there singing with the Dubliners, with Christy Moore and with Sharon Shannon if he was 'Bloody awful!!!'.
