I'd say if you need applescript you're doing it wrong. This is a job for Bash or possibly Perl/Python. GUI automation is a last resort for when you have some (poorly designed) application which cannot be automated in any other way or has no easy to use built in API/ABI.
@Ormaaj I might have agreed with you a couple months ago, but now this just makes no sense. If applescript allows you to do something in less code than python, or if it takes less time to do, then why not do it in applescript? Is it because you like to waste time? I personally think automator should only be used for things that involve manipulating tons of files at once, or for doing cron-ish tasks, but applescript should be used for anything it can do better than anything else.
@macheads101 The point isn't that it's never easier in practice to indirectly automate a task by hooking into widgets or the display server - sometimes it's the only way - rather that such a thing should rarely be necessary. Applications which might need automating should include the necessary command-line switches, API, or language bindings to do it natively rather than through a comparatively ugly hack. Though I'm sure Applescript is better integrated than something like Autoit for Windows.
Anyway - Yeah
