Keith was blind drunk when they got inside the car. He didn't know Neil was in front of the car trying to keep people away. Keith, in a drunken spur of the moment, climbed over the back seat into the driver seat and he put that Bentley's pedal to the metal.

There is also the official police investigation into the thing, and they came out with the same conclusion as to what happened. The cops determined not to charge Keith and instead prosecuted the thugs involved with the attacking of the Bentley. I imagine the cops knew just who the punks were because they were probably the "town troublemakers" to begin with.
