  • what kind do you have?

  • A little generic. Technique is impressive though.

  • is keytar difficult t learn when u know keyboard???

  • @ironmetal24 Depends how much you practice!

  • ok out of all keytarists ever.. i think you may be the one who helps me figure this out!!!!!! on a roland AX7 .. how do you get it to step through the patches on a sound module.. I have all of them lined up on my roland Gaia ... but i cant switch between them from my ax7.. can you help me?! thanks!

  • My best suggestion is to read the patch change info from the manual. For sure it can be done with very little problem. Good Luck,

    jeff

  • I like the graphics on that keytar, very cool. Not a fan of keytarists playing guitar sounds though.. it's like "look at me, I'm cheating, but I still want you to be impressed" It's kinda like playing a really high note on a keyboard with a trumpet patch.. it's just not the same.

  • Cheating? It's no different than playing flute, organ, clav etc from a "keyed" instrument. Doing to it correctly requires many years of practice.

    Thanks for your opinion.

  • Man, you ROCK!!!

  • @LiddeLidman

    Thanks Much!

    jeff

  • Man, you can shred like hell - and just one constructive critic/feedback - when playing real fast, the consecutive notes you play kind of melt one with another, which is not how it sounds on a real guitar - too much legato gives this "melting" sound... this is easily heard on 0.30 onward - it sounds a bit fake and not like how a real guitar would sound doing the same thing. However - you rule just for being so cool, and keep on doing your thing, I bet you can overcome even this slight critic!

  • Nothing too overcome, your comment was right on the money.

This was recorded using an old school sound module.

Now, when i shred you actually hear the string attacks which is what you were NOT hearing in the video. Thanks for taking the time to comment!!

  • jeff where do sell keytar?

  • I Don't. I do have someone who makes them for me.

  • awesome

  • Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome! I really want to learn how to play and am hoping to get one. Is it much like piano because I play piano and am good at that.

  • Piano is the foundation BUT it also requires studying the technique of guitarists. To get REALLY good at Keytaring, it requires mastering the bending of notes. Do watch my left hand in this video.

  • I do love the independence of recording a song and being able to play authentic guitar parts on my own and of course, kicking ass on stage with a blazing solo.

But i also love playing along side a guitarist and playing great rhythm chops to support his solo.

    Thanks Much for Your comments!

  • I think the objective for a band should always be the best they can as musicians, write&record great music, be unique& have fun.

Keytaring will never replace Guitaring. What it does, is give Keyboardist freedom to interact better with an audience and his/hers band members.

Sonically the potential to replicate a guitar has never been better.

  • Man, first I want to say I've never seen someone do a better guitar solo on the keyboard. I was wondering though what you have assigned to the ribbon. Obviously the pitch bend, but is there something else as well? I wasn't sure what you were doing with your left hand. Just curious.

  • Great Question and Thanks for the comment!

The left hand in the "Grey" is two octaves of "Pitch Bend"

The "Black Bar" is touch sensitive vibrato

  • Basically it almost like a wammy bar on a guitar. But on a keyboard instead if you understand me.

  • so, u do a great job :D

im a keyboarder myself, and now as i saw this, i want to get a keytar myself :D

does it help to be able to play keaboard and piano? or is is just completely new?

and, btw. Do u know Sonata arctica? they got an awesome keytarist:D just listen to paid in full, i bet ull like it :D

and how much does it cost to buy one? not the really expensive ones, just one for a beginner?

  • I like Sonata Artica. it's GREAT to see a band with a Keytarist featured!

Yes for sure its an asset to play keyboard to play Keytar.

That said, to be a REAL Keytarist there are other learning curves.

Please see my Realguitar RealStrat 101 video for details

Keytars sell for a range of 1-5 thousand U.S.D.

    Thanks for the nice comment!

  • Yeah!!!!!!!!! Excelent!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • This makes me even more excited i am getting the AX-Synth when it comes out soon

  • got that feel and lick , from " i am the slime " by frankzappa ..... unbelieveable ... truly shit hot

if anyone dont like this , you can at least accept true ability and commitments to an art .. If you cant see that ... go F off and play guitar hero !!!

  • Never said better!

    Thanks Much.

  • "Ridiculous that's what it is! sick mon sick!"

  • again, Thanks::)

  • why use it to make guitar sounds? learn some better stuff please. lol

  • Better? Considering this video at one point was the #1 Music video&#1 Guitar video& #1 Solo video, on YouTube I'm thinking it was pretty Ok. In this video i was using KORG products. Now All my Guitar sounds come from RealGuitar& RealStrat from "Musiclab". Thanks for asking&comments.

  • he reminds of Santana so much

  • Wow, I'm humbled. I'm a BIG fan of Carlos!

  • I have a roland AX1 but since i have now 2 young kids 3 and 5 years, i have it on the closet :(

Anytime i see people playing keytars, i like to play it, but not for now hahahaha

  • I see many videos from people playing keytars... and this guys is by far the best..

In this particular video, i think he pass the limits :S LOL

  • Thanks VERY Much for the Positive Feedback,

    jeff

  • where can i buy a keytar, preferably a yamaha shs or an awsum roland like yours?

  • I think ebay is the only choice.

  • You rock. Now how do I get the wife to let me buy it. hmmmmm hehehe

  • Realguitar i mean. I want the acoustic one most.

  • Yes, it is and the Keytar is a Roland Ax-1.Thanks for the comment!

  • Awsome dude. Is that the riff from cocain in the backround?

And what keytar is that, brand, etc?

  • yea...its cocaine...and its a roland keytar...

  • Man this is awesome.Really.I think this is much more versatile than gutiar.Of course it can't be compared with a guitar but playing keytar like that wow!

  • dude wat does the touch bar at the 'neck' do , i notice vibrato, is it just like a whammy bar on a guitar?

  • The black bar is for Vibrato. The Grey strip is where i bend notes, the range is two octaves and i also do vibrato from there.

  • your my new hero....

  • Thanks for the COOL comment!!

  • I love it when a gifted keyboard player like you can "elbow" the guitar player out of the spotlight and shred with as good or better technique... rock on Jeff!!!!!

  • no offence to jeff at all cause he's a better musician than anyone else on youtube including maself, but its harder to 'shred' on real guitar than on a keyboard, but this is one awesome solo none the less jeff and must have taken ages for you to get such precision and speed. rock on man

  • Another excelent video. Well done........

Just not long a go bought another AX-7 paid through the teeth for it. It's about time roland manufactured a new model.

  • is keytar the same as keyobard

  • The keytar is the same as a keyboard. As in the technique is nothing like playing a guitar appart from the fact you hang it round your neck.

Personally I hate the name 'keytar'. When I started it was called a 'shoulder keyboard' which for me is a much better name.

Its a roland ax-1 being played in the video. The roland ax1 and ax7 are both midi keyboard controlers i.e. they do not have sounds of their own. The sounds come from an external sound module of synthesizer.

  • Brilliant!!!

What kind of keytar is it?!?!?!

  • how would you get the sucker to use the guitar sounds? im taking a shot in the dark by thinking

that it is not built into the unit

  • MIDI...

  • that was amazing, i loved it. keep more coming please

  • You're obviously a jerk who doesn't see talent - I couldn't even begin to play a Keytar as well as this guy does - And you children calling things 'Gay' all the time is really funny. Maybe if his Keytar was pink or something . . . LOL

  • you're a dick. only without a dick.

  • you rock, i want one so bad

  • i second that! :P

  • Where can I buy your album Stadium Arcadium?

  • Mopping up at night does not give you the right to say "we in the studio biz..."

  • nice work man...

  • is he dime's dad? cause i can see the same way they shred fo sho!

  • FO SHO!

  • JUst mindless shredding. The begining was alright but then he resorted to Cliche amature guitar riffs.

No tastiness or thought behind the solo. Gives keyboard players a bad rap

  • can you play the keyboard/tar like him..?

  • Yes I can. Name a famous guitar solo

  • uhh..

    Dimebag's cowboys from hell

    Hendrix's Little wing/purple haze

theres too much to say..? but lol

    why do you ask..?

  • Hah yeah, mindless shredding... any person who has picked up a guitar knows that shredding is in no way mindless. You don't just pick up a guitar (or keytar for that matter) and play at light speed accurately. Mindless shredding... hah, what an asshole

  • Er um yes you do..its called Running up and down scales. You get that shredding skill by doing your Hannon excercises and then just running up and down patterns in the blues scale.

  • That's not shredding... That's running through scales... There's a difference. Shredding (Yngwie, Batio, Becker, Satch) involves an extreme in depth knowledge of theory. And sweep arpeggios? Yeah, pick up a guitar and just do sweeps like Michael Romeo and let's see how far you get. Shredding is not mindless, i'm so sick of people saying that.

  • And also, (sorry, I forgot this) good shredding isn't done in just blues scales, it's done in harmonic minors and diminished scales.

  • Shredding is just mindless showing off form musicians with technical chops

but who lack melodic knowledge. Shredder's usually only impress other shredders

and are rarely good musicians or writers. In the studio biz we have a

saying..."you get a free shredder with a full tank of gas and any participating

Sunoco" Studios and producers have little use for them and they are so plentiful

  • 3 words... fuckin do it. I'm a guitarist, I play all different styles, my favorite style to play happens to be metal. I've been shredding for years and trust me, it isn't just bull shit. You people in the "biz" (whatever the Hell that means... throwing that out doesn't impress anyone over an online comment) are talking about mediocre shredders, not legends.

  • And one more point... any studio in this world would kill to get their hands on another Randy Rhoads or Dimebag. You label all shredders bad songwriters and it's ridiculous. No shredder just shreds and doesn't play anything else. Most shredders were into classical or jazz so talk about good musicians when you know what a good musician is, thanks.

  • Dude, I am talking about this guy...

YOU threw "legends" into the discussion and then ran off on a tangent.

  • Shredding has it's place, but just like a whammy bar or a wahaa pedal. To much of anything is too much. I saw Paul Gilbert, an outstanding guitarist. He shredded for 45 minutes and after that much shredding I was tired of it. Kinda like Kirk H of Metalica, after using a wa-wah on every solo you have to admit the use or sound of it gets old.

  • I would like to see any of you complainers even come close to being able to play like this.Anyone can type a response, lets see some of ye actualy playing.

  • perhaps, if the guitar was made to act and sound exactly like a grand piano. it's like someone playing the drums, but the drums are voiced like a saxophone, and he's playing a really gnarly coltrane solo. it's still very impressive, don't get me wrong.

  • that's neat, but why don't you just play the guitar?

  • That's like asking someone who plays Moonlight Sonata on a guitar why they don't just become a concert pianist.

  • I agree

  • There. Now anyone who thinks keytar is lame can shove one up their ass.

  • i second that

  • No way!! Was that real??

  • jazz pianist and rock/metal keyboardists are everything but same..

    u cannot compare a pianist with a keyboardist!!! lol..what a..

  • you would be ripped apart by 99 percent of the jazz pianists out there.

  • Holy shit, I didn't even know that was possible on keytar.

  • BILLY AND THE ROCKETS wants this guy in the group

  • fuckin amazing!!!

  • amazing playing

  • wow you got the same name as dimes dad

    nice work man you rule

  • damn! this is sick!

  • Look at LPC-Prominy... excelent samples for electric and acustic

  • omfg keytars are so cool, and you of course ))

  • cool job! and i notice eric clapton's cocaine as ure back tracking..i so want one of those synths! too expensive =( do u kno a good one i could start out with?

  • cool

  • wow thats cool

  • Damn I gotta find out what did u use to get that realistic guitar sound... Great playing!

  • You make the keytar cool!!! :D

  • HEY! why aren't you singing on this one? haha
