  • it's crazy how you can still manage a good serve despite the strong wind !! i've just gotten around to playing tennis.. bout a year ago i think, trying to learn the serve, any way i can get advice from you ?

  • Foot Faults from crossing the center peg! Definitely not a serve you would want to teach to juniors. You are dropping your left arm and head too early.... probably a domino effect. And you say you step up to get the height but you aren't actually getting great height off the ground, you seem to be moving more toward the right. It seems to work ok for what you want to do though.

  • I also step with my right foot, however it almost always crosses the baseline/footfault. I've made adjustments to no longer step, shorten the step, or start back 4-6 inches, but all with a drastic loss of power or placement. I have a dominating serve, but i'd like to correct this. Any suggestions?

  • i'm mo expert, but your shots seem to consistantly end up near the right edge, or head towards the middle and hit the net. maybe it was the wind?

  • he has never served to the other side of the court

  • Don't you lose some upper body rotation by moving your right leg like that?

    Look at Ryan Harrion's serve!

  • @Ecriadinel

You mean, my step? I don't lose any rotation! If you pause at the ball toss, you can see my upper body is very rotated to the point where my opponent can see my back. This is a common serve. Ryan Harrison has a platform serve, which is more stable, but I like the extra height from my step.

  • you drop your left shoulder far too early mate, try pushing your body more to the right during and after contact, this will help :)

  • @dazlad92

Sorry, I don't quite understand. Push my body more to the right? I should not be pulling my body anywhere! And I don't drop my left arm early at all. Do you play tennis, mate? A good serve depends on great ball toss arm, shoulder rotation, and knee bend. Pushing my body, or shoulder drop (?) have nothing to do with that!

  • @tenishotshot hey I am trying to help you, I am a tennis coach and I do play the sport thank you very much. and what I mean is you drop your shoulder when you hit the ball, I tell students to keeper their body weight high and yours drops a bit through the left shoulder. and what i mean by pushing to the right, for example i presume you can do a kick serve? and to do a kick serve you push your body to the right, yes? if you don't understand then sorry. but having a go at me is not on mate

  • @dazlad92

These are not meant to be kick serves. Why do you want me to hit kick serves in a video that I do not hit a single kick serve? I am a former US junior champ player turned coach. I appreciate good advice, but yours does not make sense. There's no sign of you anywhere that you are a tennis coach, either on Youtube or online. Do you have any online literature or former rank?

Dropping my left shoulder is not right. Feel free to watch the slow motion part of me at the very beginning.

  • @tenishotshot it was an example of what i tried to explain. and fine you can ignore my comment, but i am not wrong. i understand why you are no longer at the standard....and of course i am not called dazlad92. this is my sons account. and yep its right, your feet and trophy position is incorect aswell mr know it all. peace out

  • sexyy ;) girls must love this =P...ahahaha

  • Great vid. From watching it, you have a consistent serve. My question regards switching the serve towards the center-line, if ...say the opponent is left handed and just has a great return. Any tips?

Also, lots of videos focus on the first serve, but it's inevitable that some will miss. Any tips on the second serve. Do you prefer a spin, or just a change in angle?

  • @aleki2424

Hey Aleki, sorry about the late reply. My serving stays the same whether the player is a righty or a lefty. My second serves rarely go down the middle. I slice a serve wide out on Deuce-side, and I hit a kick serve out wide on the Ad-side. If I notice that they have an exceptionally good backhand or forehand, I'll modify one of those serves. For example, if your lefty has a great forehand return, then I won't hit a kickserve out wide on the Ad-side, but try to mix in a down-the-line.

  • There are millions of videos on teaching abt tennis serve...but , THERE IS NONE that CAN COME EVEN CLOSE' to this. You are the best. These two videos are the best. I showed this to couple of my friends kids, and their serve improved a lot. I can see they are very confident on the steps you showed in your videos.

  • You Are An Awesome Techer .. I Really Admire Your Way Of Teaching Tennis :-) ..

Are You On Facebook..? If Yes , Then Please Message Me The Link .. :-)

    Thanks.

  • This is excellent. How does one get such snap and power on the serve?

    Thanks for any assistance.

  • @kanwar47

Hey. Sorry for getting back to you so late. The power comes from your shoulder turn. The knee bend simply allows you to turn your shoulders more explosively, as well as give you some taller height to hit from. So, make sure you kinda pull your right shoulder back while you're tossing. (if you're a righty). You know how pitchers throw, right? They pull their pitching arm back and wind up for a monster throw. Same concept here. Look up "trophy pose" for any pro, and see their shoulder.

  • @tenishotshot Hmmm that does make some sense. Seeing as the weather is not so good at the moment (UK) i shall definitely try to implement this the next time i hit some balls. Thanks for your advice and keep up the good work!

  • do you use continental grip?

  • @johanna4444

Yes, I do! If you're used to hitting flatter serves, just slow down the motion and go easy at first. Good luck!

  • you have made a great vid and i look forward to seeing and sharing it with my friends. I really want to learn how to serve I am althetic person just never got around to playing eoungh to learn how to really serve. Also quick question on your video, I have a mini DV cam whats the best converter for to use for making DVD's?

  • hello.im a freshman in high school and i can serve hard over the net sometimes but it usually hits the net.any advice on making the ball go over an not down so far?im 5'6 if height makes a difference

  • @airsoftrules987

Well, back when I was really young, I used to always use a heavy topspin serve in general, to help it loop over the net. If I hit too flat, then it'd hit the net. Try putting in a little more topspin. Really concentrate on putting a strong topspin cut on the ball. Maybe you should practice your kneebend and extension. Try experimenting with some easy serves, but almost hopping up and hitting down on the ball. Remember, not too hard at first. I think a higher jump will help.

  • @Tenishotshot thank you for reply I went out and tried a relaxed serve and I was hitting it better than before with my other swing. So thank you

  • I have a question for you. After practicing your serve for an hour or so does your shoulder start hurting. Because I practice alot with my serve and I think im swing to hard or not swinging threw all the way because my shoulder has been giving me trouble because of the practice. Im taking a week off which kills me but im a pretty muscular guy and I just dont see why its happening. O and my serve is bad so in general I just need to work on it

  • @JESUSxxFREAK

So first of all, my arm does feel tired after an hour practice. (That's really long for serve practice!) But, it's not in pain. Since you're muscular, you might try to really power through the ball with your arm, resulting in your pain. However, you could try to keep your motion relaxed. The speed will come from your arm being really loose and natural, not from being tight. Try taking a few practice swings in the beginning. My first 20 serves were super slow and relaxed.

  • Feel free to check out my other videos, and also please ask questions, if you have any! I'll try to respond to your questions quickly and as well as possible. Thanks!

  • Hi I just started playing tennis for high school and I'm currently having a lot of trouble with my serve. Do you have any advice on preventing the ball from going wide? I always lose matches because I double fault -.-. Hope your arm feels better!

  • @kookiemonster355

Hi! Get your ball toss down, really well. If your ball toss is bad, then your serve will be bad. I can't say, since I haven't seen you serve. (if you can get a vid, I can give you better tips) Don't toss too high. Toss it just high enough for a full extension. Next, for more consistency, add some topspin to the ball. Then, make sure your service motion is smooth and consistent, the same EVERY time!! But first, fix your toss, okay? :)

  • @tenishotshot I'll try to upload a video this weekend from practice! How would I be able to put a top spin on it? :3

  • @kookiemonster355

Well, first of all, try to use a continental grip. That will give you a good balance between power and topspin, and also give you the option to slice serves too. First, to practice the topspin, try to brush up on the ball. Don't try to bend your knees too much at first, and concentrate on brushing up. Follow this video, because it shows the perfect way to practice the topspin on your serve. Good luck!
