Alexider the great was born in Macindonia at that time city-states like Macedonia would have been the same as a Country so name the #1 answer this is just idiotic in itself
You would think the people who organised the questions for the last quiz show would know the difference themselves between modern FYR of Macedonia and ancient Macedonia.
If I had been on that show, I would have kicked up a major fuss. Also there is the fact they actually showed a FYROM flag......which would mean they regard Alexander as Slavic - despite the fact slavs did not arrive in Europe until Late Antiquity.
I don't see why the last one was stupid. So they didn't know the answer, there are probably many other questions they also wouldn't be able to answer. The other clips at least showed people not even understanding the question they were asked, or not being able to grasp the simplest of common knowledge. I wouldn't consider the birthplace of Alexander the Great to be in that category.
Greek was an ethnicity, Alexander was Macedonian and Greek nationalism not realized at the time. So no nation of Greece, only a shared culture, like English is to Britain and the US, Canada, Aus & NZ. Macedonian is the correct answer.
I don't know about English, but in Dutch it's allowed to rhyme a word with the same word. Almost nobody uses it because it's really ugly and often shows a lack of creativity, but it's technically correct.
two things in europe are called macedonia; the kingdom of macedonia, which is a region in greece and the FYROM or the republic of macedonia, which is an independent country above greece.
my point is; it is not a stupid answer. when the question is "what country..." the should be greece with a specifiction on macedonia.. like: "greece (pella, macedonia) ...
meaning they answered the question right.
the people who wright that macedonia is independent are propably thinking about the republic. :)
You are stupid for fucking real i see... ACIEN MACEDONIA and MACEDONIA has not much in common! Also greece was a group of coltures at the time departed into citystates. Macedoinia (acient) managed under the lead of Fipiph the second to take absolute controll over the union of corinth which included praclitcly alla of greece except for sparta and the west coast. Now that is basic knowledge...
The last one was a trick question. The Greeks didn't consider him Greek but he did. I would have said Macedonian but Greek should have been an acceptable answer. Why the Greeks resented him was that he was a King and most city-states, even Sparta, had some form of democracy. Also, he drank wine straight while other Greeks watered their wine down. Bad game-show question. On the other hand, he read his Homer and saw himself as a modern Achilles, he was mentored by Aristotle.
@Duke1839 Other Greeks considered him Greek. Macedonians participated at the Olympic Games, while only Greeks had the right to participate. Some Athenian politicians called Phillip a barbar, since Athens was the most powerefull state in the Greek world and obviously Macedonia was threatening this dominance. They tried to influence other Greek states to fight against Macedonia, so Athens don't lose the dominant role.
Wow.. nice going guys.. what language did Alexander speak? Did he needed a translator when speaking with Athenians? Antic Greek was not a national state, but a large array of cities-states, or region-states, much like Italy or Germany afterwards were divided in many opposing land lords - still sharing same culture, language base and ethnicity.
The fact that now a country is named Macedonia and Greeks don't like it is another matter - population change during last 2500 years make it a reality.
Alexandar the great was Macedonian!! Why would that be wrong answer??????? Just because Pella is in Greece doesnt meen that Pella was once in Macedonia....you know that countries are changing because of wars and shit.... xD
of course he was greek, because greece covers macedonia like it covers sparta or athens.. How would americans like if people were saying George Washington was in fact Englishmen because he was born on (in that time) english ground ?
@HellenicLogic No. I do not think that this is the point. I would have said Macedonia to. Yes, Alexander conquert Greece( to be exact the citys Sparta and Athen) very fast, but Macedonia exsisted as a cotry long before that. And what do you say to the Macedonians living today. It is still a contry for itself. In the fictional pasport of Alexander would have been writen: Nationality: Macedonian.
Post scriptum: Plese ignore my mistakes. I am from Germany):
@Lennart2512 But Athens and Sparta were also independent countries, exactly like Macedonia. So you mean, ancient Greeks do not exist and these history professors are totally wrong. Also the ancient Greeks were stupid by calling themselves Greek since they didn't exist. The Macedonians living today, are Greeks. But if you mean FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia), those people are mostly Slavs. And as you already probably know, Slavs came in 6th century AD
Alexander spoke greek, his name is greek, his father's name was greek, his horse's name was greek. His grandfather, Alexander the A participated in the Olympic Games, where by law no non-greek could participate. His teacher was Aristoteles and his idol was Achilles. Believed in the greek gods. Led the war against the Persians asking greeks to unite against their common enemy and made greek the language of his empire. There was no greece as a country, every tribe had its own state.
@Lennart2512 the answer is really unlear, coz he was the king of masadonia. but he was born in pella which was a greek run state in macidonia. so its a bit confussing as if he was greek or macadonian. Bad question to ask really
Some of those questions proposed would be difficult for most people to be honest. Obviously the Europe thing and the pasta thing was ridiculous but the question about Alexander the Great and the borders of Iran would be difficult especially in the pressures of a gameshow arena.
This video is very informative. THAT'S RIGHT. The uploader of this video is from Greece and is extremely insensitive about people messing up the location of countries. He expects everybody to know the answer to every single question and he has no sense of humor.
wtf....I live in Macedonia, which is a region in northen Greece...Pella is in Greece...I was there some weeks ago and I think I'd know if I wasn't in my country...For the last time...Macedonia is Greek!....

@georgiarock9811 Macedonia was not a part of Greece during Alexander the Great's time. Greece wasn't even a nation. The political structure of the time in Greece was "every city for itself". There was no such thing as a nation. So no, Macedonia was not a part of Greece BACK THEN.
@HelIenicLogic No, that's not what I meant. I simply meant that the Greek cities did not unite as one nation during Alexander the Great's time, therefore he couldn't have come from the nation of Greece. I said nothing about Kurdish or Palestinian nationality.
@TubeYou2251 Now we can slowly come to a conclusion. No Greek state back then, but people from this time considered themselves as Greek. What did they mean? What were the criteria to be a Greek? Athens and Sparta were also independent countries, but what made them Greek? What do todays history professors mean when they say "Ancient Greeks"? Greeks were people who had specific roots, culture and were speaking Greek. Macedonia met all the above criteria to be considered Greek.
@TubeYou2251 But if you read the description and watch the videos, you will see what this history professor is saying on History Channel. Actually Alexander's father unified all the Greek city states and made them one unified nation.
the last one gave me the impression that you're a butthurt greek? In your stupid logic shouldn't you be all romans? there was no place called greece...even we still call you "yunan" reference to ionians. even you dumbasses call your country "hellas"...hellenic my ass.

@HelIenicLogic i'm not turkish but why it is a shame for you having someones roots in mongolia ? I think mongolian did far more than people would have thought of like Genghis Khan
@durimkra It's not a shame having your roots anywhere. But turks don't like to admit it, because if they accept it, they lack legitimacy. Their country is occupied land, which belongs to other populations. To achieve this, they committed genocides. They chased away or killed around 1 million Armenians, around 600.000 Greeks etc. while they try to convince that they always lived on this land. They even claim Homer (who wrote Odyssey and Iliad) was a turk. That's the reason he tried
@durimkra to doubt the existence of Greece. If they accept the term "Greek", their country lies on stolen land. If you are not from the Balkans, you can't understand the reason people and governments claim specific things. It has to do with History combined with geopolitics. My comment was not to insult his roots, but to criticize the reason of his point of view.
@Tompa8989 "Europe is not a country, and can't never be described as ONE country. Anyone who thinks that should be shot " Oh wow then a lot of European should be shot , since i see a lot of video EUROPE VS US . They are so convinced that they are in one country ! ;)

Yes, Macedonia was founded by people of Greek decent but by neither their nor true "Greek" reckoning were Macedonians Greek. In fact there were wars between Macedonia and Greek states, individually and collectively, constantly.
@OmegaCanuck There were also wars between Athens and Sparta. Macedonia was just another Greek kingdom.
@kayjaybean lol. I'm sorry for doing a cursory search on google to post some links, my master. Just give me your address to send you the best and most expensive encyclopedia master. Ill do anything to enrich your knowledge and education my master.
Alexander was Greek. Macedonia as we know it now is a country that the Serbians made up during the 20'th century in a desperate attempt to expand their territory. It was never a real country and never will be. In Alexander's time Macedonia was just what they called that area of Greece. Not a separate country.
@MrAmokz The difference is that Macedonia is still a part of Greece. You are confusing the modern state which is trying to adapt the name Macedonia, with ancient Macedonia. Imagine if after the split of Soviet Union, a new country would come up and claim it is called Oulu and also claimed Oulu's heritage.
@HelIenicLogic its not strictly true if you were born in macedonia then yes you were technically greek because it was part of the greek empire but say peopple born in britain during the romans campaing. they would have been called roman. they led a roman life but there nationality was british. thereofre its not that stupid to say he was macedonian. its the answer i would have given.
@HelIenicLogic Greece as a country didn't exist back then. It is only called ancient greece because of it's geographical location. Which was made up of many smaller countries with their own government, examples of which are Sparta and Athens.
It's debated wether the entirety of the geographical location had a single name known to all it's inhabitants or not, if it did however is was still no country. Just a name for a larger geographical area just like Europe is in our time.
@Anon32645 And what exactly did they mean when they said "Every non Greek, is a barbar"? And why they said "Only Greeks have the right to participate at the Olympic Games"? And what did Herodotus mean by saying "Those people who dwell in our land, are Ionians, Aeolians, Dorians and Achaeans". Which was "their" land nad whose land was it? This is all baloney. Specific areas were considered Greek and specific people were considered Greeks. Macedonia was one of hem.
@HelIenicLogic You are still wrong. Saying that only greeks can participate in the olympic games is the same as saying that only european countries can participate in the European championships.
You did know that every greek state sent a specific number of epresentatives since they were all independant?
Ancient greece was never a country, only a geographical area containing many smaller countries. For them to say they were greek is the same as me saying I'm european.
@Anon32645 "Saying that only greeks can participate in the olympic games is the same as saying that only european countries can participate in the European championships." Of course, but do Europeans feel they have the same nationality? Back then, people didn't have passports. Even today, a government and borders of administrative division DO NOT make a nationality. If so, we would have 2 different Palestinian nationalities and no Kurdish nationality.
@greifdealer no they said he was from the democratic republic of macedonia. he was from the region of grece called macedonia. DRM just kinda pinched the name.
I don't think that the Alexander question deserves the No 1 slot there. Thinking Europe is a country comes across as far more stupid.
No 1 comes down to interpretation - you could call him Greek, you could call him Macedonian. He was both, so long as you accept that ancient Macedon is not the same state as modern Macedonia. The error the show made was in confusing the ancient with the modern, which is easy to do for somebody who's not into history. Though of course they should have done better.
I agree, the Alexander thing isn't the "dumbest answer ever" unless I missed something. I knew the correct answer, but I would guess a good portion of the population, even among educated folks, wouldn't know the answer to that and might guess "Greek,"
@merrittdude Alexander spoke Greek and was Greek, wasn't he?Macedonia was his nationality but, Greek was his heritage.Just as Cleopatra spoke Greek and was Greek, even though she was an Egyptian ruler.
Bullshit, although I knew the answer was macedonian, Greek is a perfectly acceptable answer, since nation states really did not exist during that time as we know them, and "nationality" depended far more on a persons ethnicity and language. To call that the biggest fail is fail. I think thinking Europe is a country is far stupider. I am just not sure.. oh ok, I just finished the video... whew. :)
well... as a hungarian and european i'd give the prize to the second bitch... thank you...(yeah europe is a country also our planet is called america and you're the center of the universe -.-)
@Strigori88 The planet's not called America, dumbass. It's called E A R T H. Earth is also the third planet in our solar system called the M I L K Y W A Y.
I think at number 3 the woman wanted to say Manet. Édouard Manet OR Claude Monet who both were french painters and according to her accent it seems pretty legit for me to mishear this.
Pella (Greek: Πέλλα), an ancient Greek city located in Pella Prefecture of Macedonia in Greece, was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia. (Source: Wikipedia)
I thought Macedonia was a different country from Greece around the time of Alexander the Great. There is also a country called Macedonia now next to Greece.
@MrPrivity Greece was not a country back then. It was a region with independent city-states-kingdoms, with people who considered themselves Greeks.. Macedonia was one of them. The modern country which is trying to adapt the name Macedonia has no connection to ancient Macedonia. The majority of these people are Slavs. As you probably already know, Slavs came into the region in 6th century AD. The descendants of ancient Macedonians, are the people living in the Greek part of Macedonia.
@HelIenicLogic Hmm..you are right. I did a little bit of research and modern day Macedonia does seem to have nothing to do ancient Macedonia. You are also right about Greece being comprised of city states in ancient times and current Macedonian republic is a slavic nation. But considering that everyone in the world already knows that Alexander the Great is a Greek, I think what the quiz wanted was a more specific answer, like whether he was originally the king of Athens or Sparta or Macedonia.
@MrPrivity I don't know why the show used that question. The question was for a lot of money. After heavy protests from Greeks, the show answered that the team who chose the questions, need 2 different sources to count an answer as correct. So they found 2 sources where it was mentioned that AtG was Macedonian, and took this as correct. What if the candidates would answer Macedonia? Since there are a lot more sources saying he was Greek, would the show take Greek as correct?
@HelIenicLogic i cant believe they did this. and they even put the macedonian flag. the former yugoslav republic macedonia, which now exists and has that flag, has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with ancient greece. and of course he was greek. my god, and they wanted to put in a trick question and it came out to be so stupid, i cant believe it. the only reason why the country is called macedonia, is because of the territory its on.
@MrPrivity I am asking myself, would the candidates lose in any way, no matter what they would answer? I don't know. Also the show apologized for putting there the flag of FYROM and said they will remove it from future presentations.
@HelIenicLogic pff we dont steal name we have this name 2350 yrs from Alexander`s time till now
and you greeks want to steal.. Why....oh i forgoth u dont have have history like bulgaria and you have one solution if i dont have i will steal....and problem solved
@MrPrivity WOW, good job! You're very intelligent! You should go get some cake now! The joke I think was on the host, because Alexander the Great was born in "Macedon" which was a state of Greece at the time...That is why they were making jokes at the end about different people and...ah never mind, you're just too stupid.
Alexander the Great was Greek. In whatever place he was born, it was considered a part of Greece at that time, so that makes him Greek, not Macedonian
Alexider the great was born in Macindonia at that time city-states like Macedonia would have been the same as a Country so name the #1 answer this is just idiotic in itself

harula14 2 weeks ago
Alexander was Greek. Macedonia as we know it now is a country that the Serbians made up during the 20'th century in a desperate attempt to expand their territory. It was never a real country and never will be. In Alexander's time Macedonia was just what they called that area of Greece. Not a separate country.
CatsBunniesDucksMice 2 weeks ago
@CatsBunniesDucksMice
In William the Conqueror's time England was just what they called that area of France. Not a separate country.
MrAmokz 1 week ago
@MrAmokz The difference is that Macedonia is still a part of Greece. You are confusing the modern state which is trying to adapt the name Macedonia, with ancient Macedonia. Imagine if after the split of Soviet Union, a new country would come up and claim it is called Oulu and also claimed Oulu's heritage.
HelIenicLogic 1 week ago
@HelIenicLogic its not strictly true if you were born in macedonia then yes you were technically greek because it was part of the greek empire but say peopple born in britain during the romans campaing. they would have been called roman. they led a roman life but there nationality was british. thereofre its not that stupid to say he was macedonian. its the answer i would have given.

@HelIenicLogic Therefor saying people that lived in ancient greece were greeks by nationality is wrong in every possible way.
That would be like saying every European person's nationality would be European.
Quite logic really.
Anon32645 2 weeks ago
@HelIenicLogic Greece as a country didn't exist back then. It is only called ancient greece because of it's geographical location. Which was made up of many smaller countries with their own government, examples of which are Sparta and Athens.
It's debated wether the entirety of the geographical location had a single name known to all it's inhabitants or not, if it did however is was still no country. Just a name for a larger geographical area just like Europe is in our time.
Anon32645 2 weeks ago
@Anon32645 And what exactly did they mean when they said "Every non Greek, is a barbar"? And why they said "Only Greeks have the right to participate at the Olympic Games"? And what did Herodotus mean by saying "Those people who dwell in our land, are Ionians, Aeolians, Dorians and Achaeans". Which was "their" land nad whose land was it? This is all baloney. Specific areas were considered Greek and specific people were considered Greeks. Macedonia was one of hem.
HelIenicLogic 2 weeks ago
@HelIenicLogic You are still wrong. Saying that only greeks can participate in the olympic games is the same as saying that only european countries can participate in the European championships.
You did know that every greek state sent a specific number of epresentatives since they were all independant?
Ancient greece was never a country, only a geographical area containing many smaller countries. For them to say they were greek is the same as me saying I'm european.
Anon32645 2 weeks ago
@Anon32645 "Saying that only greeks can participate in the olympic games is the same as saying that only european countries can participate in the European championships." Of course, but do Europeans feel they have the same nationality? Back then, people didn't have passports. Even today, a government and borders of administrative division DO NOT make a nationality. If so, we would have 2 different Palestinian nationalities and no Kurdish nationality.

I am just not sure.. oh ok, I just finished the video... whew. :)

I thought Macedonia was a different country from Greece around the time of Alexander the Great. There is also a country called Macedonia now next to Greece.
MrPrivity 1 month ago 24
@MrPrivity Greece was not a country back then. It was a region with independent city-states-kingdoms, with people who considered themselves Greeks.. Macedonia was one of them. The modern country which is trying to adapt the name Macedonia has no connection to ancient Macedonia. The majority of these people are Slavs. As you probably already know, Slavs came into the region in 6th century AD. The descendants of ancient Macedonians, are the people living in the Greek part of Macedonia.
HelIenicLogic 1 month ago 46
@HelIenicLogic Hmm..you are right. I did a little bit of research and modern day Macedonia does seem to have nothing to do ancient Macedonia. You are also right about Greece being comprised of city states in ancient times and current Macedonian republic is a slavic nation. But considering that everyone in the world already knows that Alexander the Great is a Greek, I think what the quiz wanted was a more specific answer, like whether he was originally the king of Athens or Sparta or Macedonia.
MrPrivity 1 month ago 3
@MrPrivity I don't know why the show used that question. The question was for a lot of money. After heavy protests from Greeks, the show answered that the team who chose the questions, need 2 different sources to count an answer as correct. So they found 2 sources where it was mentioned that AtG was Macedonian, and took this as correct. What if the candidates would answer Macedonia? Since there are a lot more sources saying he was Greek, would the show take Greek as correct?
HelIenicLogic 1 month ago
@HelIenicLogic i cant believe they did this. and they even put the macedonian flag. the former yugoslav republic macedonia, which now exists and has that flag, has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with ancient greece. and of course he was greek. my god, and they wanted to put in a trick question and it came out to be so stupid, i cant believe it. the only reason why the country is called macedonia, is because of the territory its on.
nataliaea011 1 month ago
@MrPrivity I am asking myself, would the candidates lose in any way, no matter what they would answer? I don't know. Also the show apologized for putting there the flag of FYROM and said they will remove it from future presentations.

@MrPrivity WOW, good job! You're very intelligent! You should go get some cake now!
