You gotta feel for the marshals here as they are trying their best to do their job, but it's hard to fight what you can't see. Not only that, but they are at risk as not a one of them has on a protective suit and risk being burned themselves.
@CombatSportFan When you are right there, there is no doubt in your mind that you're dealing with a fire. The true shame is that the Speedway was run so poorly in those days, the marshals were not properly equipped to deal with the fire. That changed immediately after this fire.
I was a pit crerw member on this car. You can see me at the back of the car, directing one of the speedway firemen, and then later usin an extinguisher myself.
I HAVE NO TIME OR PATIENCE FOR THE CRETINS WHO THINK THAT THIS IS FUNNY.
@CSpray I know how terrfiing it can be to be on fire when you can see the flames. It happened to me. It must be 100x more scary when you can't see them.
@CSpray Hello. Sorry to hear you were involved in the fire. Thank goodness no one perished. I remember this as a kid and was frightened. Was the last pit crew member to be extinhguished seriously injured?
@76WestSports Thanks for asking. The person worst injured (our team manager) does not show up in any of the videos. He was released after about 2 weeks, and still carries some scar on his back. No one was badly disfigured.
@paulsonj72 Herm Johnson's fire involved the entire tank of methanol (roughly 300 gallons) draining into pit lane when both the refueling nozzle and the tank valve stuck open.
@Mrcometo I think they did change the rules awhile back for these cars, only reason they used it is because methanol burns cooler, therefor the motor doesnt get too hot and runs faster.
@Mrcometo now a days it has come to light that an alcohol fire is very easily put out with water, as opposed to fire extinguishers. So it's not really that dangerous anymore to use this form of fuel.
@EdTheBadass "You cannot see it, but they are engulfed in flames. The difficulty for the marshal's is they cannot see the flames."
I don't know if he makes it more dramatic than it is, he shockingly turns people on fire into something that's funny. Then he says inflammable which means it can be set on fire, he should have said flammable for something that easily can be set on fire. The use of highly before is kind of negated.
What video is this from? I used to have it on VHS as a kid. So much cool footage of old Le Mans, Sports Cars, F1, Trials riding and motorbikes in general... And awesome 80's soundtrack.
I lost the video in a move after highschool, no idea how to find.
@manwell77 We ran out of water very quickly and had to use what was available. The extinguisher I grabbed was Halon, which resulted in the formation of Phosgene (mustard) gas. Fortunately, no one inhaled those fumes, and halon extinguishers have subsequently been banned. Starting at the very next race, all the teams had LOTS of water available in the pits, and Indy installed big water hoses in the pits the next year. There were lots of lessons learned. Remember - this was 30 years ago...
You can also see the heat from the fire around the car affecting the vapor from the extingushers. This is one reason they don't use that crap fuel any more, sure it might be a bit safer than gasoline, but it burns MUCH hotter than gas.
Yes, this is from the Havoc series b/c this is the same idiot narrator who said that Sneva's car backfired to cause the fire in the Mears pit. The reason for the pitfire was the fueling nozzle from the Mears tank hose sprayed fuel all over the place when Mears pitted. Scary race since this was the same 500 where Danny Ongais crashed hard and many thought he was dead but he survived.
Yes, but..It was only after Mears' fire incident that they put a small amt of gas in the methanol so they could see the flames. Both Methanol AND ethanol burns invisibly in daylight. Adding 2% gasoline is what made Kanaan's fire easily visible.
The other problem is that apparently alcohol burn and skin contact and subsequent evaporation feel similar as they both feel cold. So sometimes it isn't apparent to the driver or crew if they are just wet or burning.
yes there was another pit fire worst than the mears fire in 1981 at the michigan 500 when herm johnson's pit went up in flames the fire spread to include bobby unser's pit before it was finaliy brought under controll
rick mears was very lucky the fire was not worst than what it was because the tank was full of fuel and and you can't see a an alcohol fire and if one small fireball would have hit that tank it would have been a tragedy because one small fireball the whole pit lane woud have gone up
I know this was a serious incident that could have been catastrophic but thanks to the commentator this looks more like a Monty Python sketch :D

Its not fake, its a methanol fire.
Methanol burns clear, so you cant see the flames.
Dont know why they are blowing CO2 extinguishers at it, water is the best way to put it out.
