@Meluvkittens Yes we do. But some cannot connect the dot's. Or do they know who Leviathan was. So they live at the end. And they all fall before it. What a shame.
Is the car intro referring to the Human Equation? I mean, if he 'stepped on the gas' he could be referring to the accident.. I'm just kinda wondering..
@swatdaman in a way i think it is. the person singing here is not ' me' from the human equation. but this person lives a lie as well. he thinks: ' i got it made' but has to take sleeping pills and has no connection with his son. Just like 'me' was stuck in a life he didn' t really want because of his desire to prove himself better then anyone. (my two cents)
@Akshay8585 Arjen doesn't exactly "get random people", but rather gets some of the top people in the symphonic metal scene to play a song or two on an album. So in one song you have Micheal Romeo from Symphony X, whereas in another you have the beautiful Simone Simons from Epica.
@WilBac it was a way of saying, its just one guy :|
Romeo or sione have played on barely any songs, now go back to the final experiment or electric castle, even though the musicians on the record are talented they're still random people arjen has assembled o.O
Say what you will about the lyrics or that the song is cheesy, I think this song kicks ass. I don't understand why some people think every track on an album has to be so deeply profound. This track is great and goes well with the rest of the album
On the album 01011001 this song is one of the 3 or 4 "flashback" or "flashforward" songs where while the rest of the album talks about the situation on Planet Y where the Forevers (the entities living on that planet) are losing their emotions and are trying to preserve their way of life (have to listen to all of Ayreon's albums to understand the whole storyline), these songs shows the lives of the "everyday joes" on planet earth.
The two others similar songs on this album that I can recall are "Web of Lies" which is about 2 people who met on the internet and are supposedly "in a relationship" and the other one is "The Truth is in Here" which is about a mental patient who keeps claiming that he hears the Forevers speak to him in his dreams about the coming demise of mankind.
Also this man is a character from a previous Ayreon album "The Electric Castle" where he is one of the people (he was a hippie from the 50s or something) that a Forever plucked from different points in time and put them all in one place to study their emotions.
(read the 3 comments in order, I couldn't post all 3 because it was 587 characters over the limit xD; so from bottom to top"
Just remember the other one. It was called "E=mc^2" and it's about how some scientists were able to break the equation and send a message back in time to Ayreon (a character in their first album "The Final Experiment") in the midieval times so that he can warm them of mankind's demise.
@haiguiz Also, if you recall (I know you posted this a while ago so you probably already know by now) in "The Truth Is In Here" He is also having dreams about how he was Ayreon, and the last human alive (Universal Migrator). "Mr. L" was the final reincarnation of Ayreon.
If you think about it, though. It doesn't make sense as the UM albums happen at the end of the storyline which would make it a vision, possibly? Arjen makes it all so complex...lol
Hmm, I think it was just the visions that he kept getting sent to his dreams from ever since the incident in Electric Castle. But in a way it does make sense becasue at the end of the 01011001 album they sing about the whole "complete the circle" deal, and I think at the end of the UM albums the colonist using the Dream Sequencer machine travels back in time to before the big bang and his soul seperates from his body and he becomes the new migrator, the first sould in the universe.
this guy isn't the one from Electric Castle, Mr. L is from The Truth is In Here, they're two different people, and there are only two as stated by Merlin in Final Experiment
Well I just assumed the guy who wrote the wiki page for the song knew what he was talkign about xD "The first verse describes the experiences of the character Ayreon in The Final Experiment, the second includes lines from Into the Electric Castle suggesting that Mr. L is the Hippie from that album, and the third verse appears to allude to other songs on 01011001."
It does say "suggesting" though, so I guess it's all up for speculatoin :O
Lol, well if you click "Show All xx Comments" it'll show them in proper order and you'll see that it's a long discussion about a lot of different songs. I can see where you got confused though xD
sorry i forgot, ther are two people affected by the final experiment, one is Ayreon, the other is mr. L. this song is just about some guy who downloads songs illegally.
@icedragon769 no. this is about a common guy who wastes alot of his time not caring that it'll end. bassiclly guzzling gas, downloading a movie besides going out and seeing it in theaters. he dosen't care about anyone but himself. think about it.
@uberari I was responding to an earlier comment by someone who was confusing this song with "The Truth is in Here" I never suggested that it is anything other than you described. Thank you for attempting to clear up a confusion, even if it wasn't there to begin with. There is nothing more irritating than someone who attempts to talk about a storyline as amazing as this without knowing anything about it.
@icedragon769 ik exactly what you mean. i hate people who go "the lyrics are pointless and not about anything" BULLSHIT! its all about US and how we wast so many resources. people dont get it! sorry about the confusion. im like a die hard of ayreon.
@uberari Anyone saying the lyrics are 'not about anything' or even 'pointless' has definitely watched too much MTV. I mean, Lyrics by Beonce or Lady Gaga or such 'artists' are mostly pointless, but NOT AYREON!
When I listen to these lyrics I get the feeling that the person it's about has lost everything dear to him, and subconciously made up his own reality where he is safe from all the emotions...
Well, at least that's my interpretation, love the song!
i truly love this song it makes you think . This cd is all about the loss of emotions this song discribes a 'normal'day for westeren people. We rather pend an hour watching tv nowadays then spend 5 minutes talking to each other
When I first heard this song I was like, what the heck is up with this verse, it sounds punkish. Then, out of nowhere, the chorus is like WHAM, amazing!
this is one of the more cringeworthy Ayreon songs to say the least lol! i was just saying how embarassed i would be if my phone went off with that song as the ring tone on the bus!
i dont know i kinda like the lyrics because theyre good but im not in this progressive metal thing yet the only song i really liked was the truth is in here because it had the awesomenly awesome (haha) epic flute at the begining and the lyrics were kinda kool but in the same ironic...weird soemthing like that like this song but it doesnt have that rythm like on the other song
Well, Ayreon is weird even by Prog-metal standards. If you're looking for earthly prog-metal you should try Dream Theater or Symphony X. If you're looking for something more "normal" and less heavy you should check out Porcupine tree or Pink Floyd. Each band usually have their own way of defining the gender, that's what I like about prog music ^^
dude u call prcupine tree ''normal'' that is as slow as a turtle...but thnx for the advice but im more of a melodeath/power metal kinda (weird) guy haha
Fuck knows how you got 5 thumbs up for that comment, it's something difficult to describe to cheesy foreign ppl who can't understand the subtle nuances of English.
i feel that this song is like odd it doesnt fit in with the other songs liquid eternity great the connect the dots wtf? the beneath the waves is brilliant.... i guess im thinking more about the sound than the meaning...
The life he describes is completely empty, but he thinks he's got it made because he upholds the standard set up by mainstream society. He's got the wife, the car, the job, the kid but he doesn't register the emptiness or the negative influence he has on the world.
The verse about his son is the most obvious example: He can buy stuff for him but he can't show him attention.
Exactly - I was just answering HardKorelobster who apparently didn't get the sarcasm. Sarcasm is obviously a tricky tool to employ round these here parts. Thanks for your non-sarcastic participation.

We are living for today!

I think the fact it's such a contrast to the other songs is what I liked about it.
It kind of played counterpoint - where everything else was 'epic' and complex, this one was a pleasant change of pace, and easily digestable.
Yet it's still linked to the plot, in a tangental sort of way..
