@pixelatorNYC sometimes handheld is preferred as a stylistic choice. and when going handheld, the camera operator usually wants the image to have weight to it... the image should give the appearance that the camera is heavy and sturdy. sort of floating. (little bumps and shakes make the camera seem lightweight.) that's what steadi-cams do on a larger scale, and it's essentially what IS does in video mode.
RJOPhoto - Thanks so much for posting this comparison. I just bought the 5DM2 and LOVE it but I'm freaking out now because the IS seems so friggin noisey. But hearing your comparison, it sounds exactly as mine does. I'm guessing this is completely normal (I've got the 24-105) - ?
Thanks again so much for posting this - my anxiety/rage mix has now been taken down to a grateful whimper. Thanks :)
why not use a tripod?

@RJOPhoto - ok.
ive seen lots of videos on utube created by canon's mark ii 5d camera.
and most of them have poor focus and unsteady camera technique.
in my opinion, the blur and wave look is not professional.
when i go to the classic cinema to study, i never see this style.
cheers mate

multiple options (cinematographers do this btw... maybe not 'videographers'...)
optional external stereo mic...
optional... turn audio off... and fill in sound effects, dialogue, voice-over, music in post-processing...
optional volume adjust...
etc

I can confirm this as well, check out some of my videos to see it. Using the 24-105L with the mk2 also.

ive used almost the entire line of IS lenses canon offers and none of them make that sound

my 28-105 f IS and 70-200 f2.8l IS dont make noise when shooting video.. thats odd
slimeball6969 2 years ago
you can only hear it while watching the video and with the IS turned on
RJOPhoto 2 years ago
a normal lens isnt supposed to make that sound
slimeball6969 2 years ago
lenses without image stabilization don't
RJOPhoto 2 years ago
@slimeball6969 That's normal.
This means you should record sound far away from the lens if you need stabilization.
If you're a serious videographer, Glidecam and such products are the way to go.
You can find or make smaller one for not so much money which are as effective as the pro systems.
