Wouldn't it be nice if there was a radio station that played all the artists, songs & albums that were ignored, brushed aside, forgotten or never given any credit? Rock burned brightly with some incredible artists through the decades but at the same time many just didn't get a chance. Maybe we can still discover & enjoy them. Ten Years After is a great place to start. Mother Earth is next. Then Zephyr. Genya Ravan -- who says a white girl can't sing the blues? Damn.
There is a great Terry Reid compilation called Superlungs. It features the cover of his 3rd LP which had Stay with Me on it. This was released in 2005.
I was concert committee chair at a small state college in Pennsylvania and had the pleasure of picking up the group at the airport and getting them to the college. What a hoot they were!
Luck enough to have caught Genya Ravan and Ten Wheel Drive in concert back around the "Brief Replies" album. The band was great and Genya was fantastic. Serious soul. Janis woulda been proud.
I remember the name of the song I was talking about when I said it was "I want your money" The album is in storage so I didn't have it to go by but the name of the song is "Listen to the Junkman". That is my favorite of her music.
I have a Album of Ten Wheel Drive with Genya Ravan
One of the songs on the album is "I want your money" it is awesome.
I love to hear Genya sing, she has a awesome voice and style. I heard the song on a movie, looked for the song and couldn't find it anywhere until me and my husband took a trip to Atlanta and went to a music store that sold used albums and so on. Need to say we lucked out and found the only album they had and the song was on it, I count that day as one of my lucky day's.
@Pace9000 Genya was a guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, decades ago... that night she was a solo artist, for some reason, the band wasn't with her.
My dad was the engineer for that album. At the time, he worked at A&R studios in NYC. I heard "Come Live With Me" as a reference mix first. It was such a contrast to the rest of the album. Weeks later, I heard Scott Muni introduce "How Long Before I'm Gone" on WNEW-FM; it was a hard rock powerhouse at the time. Genya on harp, what a treat!
I got this album in 1970 and have been looking for the CD of this album for years. I love this song and never heard any other version of it until just a few minutes ago when I checked out Lorraine Ellison. Both versions are absolutely fabulous!!
I always loved this band: Horns Like BS&t, singer like Joplin. This version is the first I ever heard, Midler's version, in the fictionalized life of Joplin, "The Rose," made perfect sense, and I liked it, but it doesn't match this.
saw Ten Wheel Drive at the Fillmore East back in the day when my hair was dark brown. Too bad that Genya never achieved the audience and fame of other singers.
You can really feel her pain, incredible. The harmonica cries and makes you feel it, and her plead, the need for your loved one to stay, I think is universal.
I was standing at the the front of the stage at the Fox theater in Hackensack,NJ watching her preform with a see through black top on, it was great. I requested Lapidary and she said they haven't practicied that one for the show. It was great ! Then saw her at the bitter end, village NYc
Thanks for posting, wow! saw her on Carson, he introduced her as one of the 3 strongest female vocalists: Janis, Grace and Genya. She deserves a much wider audience! (She had a hilarious story about working as a telephone operator when she first got to America)!
I have the vinyl still.... I was only one locally (small town) but I doubt if too many had within 100 miles.. I bought it in Calif but took it with me to Louisiana where I went to school.... white kid at black school.... everyone liked it but thought it was a black girl or maybe Janice... I love Pearl mind you but Genya was something else... Old now but hearing this brings some very high nights back... thanks
I know what you mean. Try it owning something like this or Rotary Connection albums in Illinois farm country. When the only music you heard was WLS and the horrible Beatles.
Great songs got forgotten because noone played them, noone heard them. Noone sang them again. Finding the feeling is one thing, knowing how to "simply" and well reproduce is quite another.
Genya knows quite a few things, IMHO. "Coming close to the original" is a big thing to say. And it is justified, in this case. Isn't it? "Never" of course is much bigger, still. And so easily said.
damn people act like they slept in the same bed as lorraine ellison (no disrespect to her may she rest in peace). this is pretty good. "nothing ever will" well of course, she did the original. chill.
The version Bette Midler sings on the movie "The Rose" is absolutely incredible. Bette's interpretation of this song is amazing. The real live recording, the acting acting, the band... the best!!!
Of all the versions of this tune over the years this is the only one that even comes close to Lorraine Ellison's original. Genya has away with soul covers & it's a shame she didn't do more of this material. Her "Hold On, I'm Coming" is also a killer!

Leave it to a New York City woman. She's bold, brash, and filled with attitude and soul. The longing is heard. This loudmouth was filled with talent.

Personally, I still think the best version of this song was by Janis Joplin, who performed it in early 1969 at the Fillmore East.

@joplinfantasy
Ellison's will always be the best. Although, I probably wouldn't mind hearing either Janis or Ten Wheel drive cover it live.

@joplinfantasy - I'm a huge JJ fan and have most of her material but I don't particularly care for her version of this song. She did it too fast.

You wanna hear her best work? Check out her production of the Dead Boys' Young, Loud, and Snotty.
