Your telling me there are people out there who own motorbikes who dont know how to start a motorbike? I would like to know how they got it home. Surly if people are that stupid they should'nt be on the road or let loose near any type of motor vehicle.
@Lachman0102 First wear tall boots! To keep from kicking back, push the kickstarter down till you feel the compression and release, then kick it. The idea is to kick when it is at the top.
Im 15 and ive got a 1992 cr 250 and i can very rarly start it even if its on the stand, i always prime the bike for a second or two before and make sure the petrol is running thru but still no luck, any tips?
Hahaha..i'd love to see her start my bike holding the clutch..hahaha ROFL! There is really really really no need to hold the clutch if the bike is neutral, and on most classic bikes with a kickstarter you actually disengage the kickstarter using the clutch..Why? The kickstarter is driving the engine through the transmission, and when you pull the clutch lever you disconnect the transmission from the engine.
Don't make a habbit of it, when you try to start a true bike this way, you'll be a laughing stock. As the kickstarter on some bikes are disengaged when you hold the clutch, as the kickstarter works through the transmission.
@boxyqueens note that nobody told me when i bought my first motorcycle: be careful not to put in in first gear while trying to kickstart it (i "climbed" onto the pedal above the kick-stand and behind the shifter in order to have much power when kick-starting the moto, and by mistake i put the in it first gear; when the engine started it started going forwad because while i was holding the front brake i was also giving it gas by mistake, doing a litle burnout till the engine died)so pull the clutch
@boxyqueens Sometimes you need to hold in the clutch.. Suzuki engines have a sefety mechanism that makes you have to hold in the clutch just incase you are in gear unaware. Nice vid anyway, my bike doesn't have a kick start though :(
It really depends on the bike and the temperature. Anywhere from seconds to a minute. (maybe more). One way to tell is when your engine stops boggin down when you give it gas. Second is the accelerating sound the engine makes.
I would think hotwiring would be more efficient and an easier skill then picking locks. And you would have to jam the lock in the on position. I'm sure there are video tutorials on this procedure . Check out the website instructables
that was actually helpful. the first time i ever kick started a bike (125cc) i done it first go but my dad has been motorbiking for 28tears now and is teaching me.
Thanks for the vid, it's really helpfull for the new people. My ol' kz650 rat bike is a kicks start only. The bike is big, heavy and awkward. I totally have to start it with the side stand down using my body weight. cool vid, guys. Thanks again.
you shouldent give it gas while its on choke. just let it warm up on choke then once its off you can rev it. Reving it on choke can cause unwanted carbon build up.
Hey don't feel bad, it's hard to identify vintage bikes. A couple of ways to tell is by color and sound. Honda is Red, KTM is Orange, Suzuki is Yellow, Kawasaki is Green, Yamaha is Blue. However custom bikes can be any color, so the sound of the bike can help identify the model. This takes practice, but once you master that, you can move on to other bikes like, Husky, Ural, Harley, BMW, Buell, Dukati, Gas Gas, Montesa, etc. Before long you can impress your friends with your new found knowledge.
awesome thank you! and you guys look like an awesome cupple!

you don't need to pull the clutch in to change gear if the engine's not running.

britishbulldog2k7 2 years ago
You don't need to hold the clutch in, but many people make it a habit because of its constant use. Might as well. There's no damage either way.

why add gas ? Wouldnt you "drown" the engine and wet the bougies?

alot of bikes wolnt just start on choke. most need a lil extra gas to get started then you should let it warm up on choke only

Re 1:29 ... Why 2nd or 3rd gear? Why not 1st gear?
adoniscomplex 3 years ago
It's all about compression ratio. 1st gear is too low and you'll just skid. You need weight and speed to turn that engine over.
Some bikes start better in 2nd gear and some in 3rd. My Montesa starts in 4th gear.
