I've tried this with bier cans. I still don't understand exactly, why should the front car should damage more, than the back one. I understand, that tha Volvo has a deformation zone in front of it, called Opel, and the Opel does not, it has a wall in front of itself. But I've tried it with bier cans, and they showed a totally invert result, 3 test, 3 times the backward can smashed, the front one stayed intact. Why?
the back of this car was weak, compared to the front of the other car, AND the volvo was coming at it, at 109km/h, the car is strongest for front collisions
i too have a volvo, in this video looks like the car in front cannot move forward and the volvo is just pushing into it, like the title says could have been off a ramp??
Yes, the Volvo has been accelerated to 68mph into the rear of a much older Opel Ascona (=Vauxhall Cavalier in UK) which is clearly against a solid concrete wall. Had the Ascona been free to move (as likely in a real accident), the damage would have been considerably less. The newer car would still have suffered less damage. Thankfully this circumstance (no attempt by hitting car to brake or evade, nowhere for hit car to go) is very rare. Any contemporary of the Opel would be just as damaged.
Uhh! I owned an Ascona for many years, and I always thought it's a stiff, solid car, cause it was like that. Never crashed with it luckily. In the eighties the Swedish Folksam Institute declared, the Ascona was the safetiest car of it's category in it's time. Hard to believe. Than what were Volvo and Benz cars?
i dont know if you ever looked at the difference in strength/design of both cars, the Opel/Vauxhall is a much cheaper car, and back then the designers were clearly not interested in safety.
The volvo is built pretty strong (not as strong as a new car on offset crashes though :-P), weights more and is more expensive. a unfair contest some may say, but the difference is clearly visible.
if the volvo were the first car it wouldn't be completely trashed/flat like the opel.
I don't think many of you are interpreting this correctly. The volvo's construction is simply better than this ford whatever it is here. So called crimple zones only work up to a point and then actual reinforced structure has to work. What you see here is that this ford p.o.s. is much more than sub standard in the structure department. Which car would you rather be in. Something to think about.
We had an 343DL at the beginings of the 80's. A Mercedes 200e crashed into our rear, cause the driver was drunk. I remember we had to mend the back lid and get a new plastic cover for the bumper. The Mercedes had to be towed, cause the radiator was damaged and both headlamps were smashed. If yo take a look at the first 343 of the 70's, their bumpers were even bigger then the later 240's or 700's.
Volvo has won many prizes for they safe and good cars 140\240\740\940.Volvo 340\360\440\460 and 480 are not real volvos they was buildt in belgia and think there was a renault engine.btw volvo 1\2\7\9 are real volvoas and was made to save lives.i know topgear had a crash a volvo 940 and a newer renault but remeber there was 10 years diffrence and who knows maybe the volvo was rusted or damage before the crash.but yes the renault was impressive
The 300 and 400 series were built in The Netherlands. Most of them had Renault engines except some in the 300 series.
I believe it was `5th gear` who crashed a 940 into a Renault Modus. Just a note that the design of the 940 goes back to the late 70's (740)and the Renault is from 2005. I'd rather still be in the Volvo because of al the energy in the Renault is absorbed in just 50cm and in the Volvo that is 200cm. Just a thought.
The same damage would happen to a medium size 1980's Volvo hatchback (340) if hit at that speed by a 740. Clearly the bigger Volvo is a more safer design. Even a modern small/medium hatchback would have difficulty absorbing a 109kmh rear impact because there's not much crumple zone to dissipate all that kinetic energy.
The Opel Ascona safety record was no worse than average during it's time.
You're a fucking idiot! A 340, 440, or even a fucking 480 would have faired a fucking hell of a lot better than that shitty fucking vauxhall. I HOPE YOU DIE! Fuck.

Yep, that video was debunked long ago. The 'makers' of Fifth Gear removed the engine and weakened the frame rails on the Volvo.
Nice try.
Look on YT for the Top Gear '£100 car challenge'. Clarkson actually drove a Volvo 760 into a wall at 40mph! (unlike the pussies on fifth gear who use test dummies)
He sustained nothing more than a 'chipped' thumb. (and the car still worked! hahahahaha)
Watch video frame by frame, there is engine right where it should be. Even I'm Volvo fan and own more than one myself, modern technology is just so much stronger, but think that it has taken this long for others to catch up, pretty good cars these old Volvos.
True, older cars have never been good at rear-end crashes. A new car would look very messed up too if hit at that speed. Even though the 740 may be a safe car compared to cars of similar age. It's far from safe by modern standards.
LOL! Damn straight. My mum used to drive a Volvo 340GL. A Transit van smashed into the back of it, and the bumper fell off, a few lights smashed, and the back needed a little bit of work. The van was a right off.
wrong, Ford only deal with finances, taxes, HR, etc they are not involved in design, testing and construction. they because are the owner can "take" tech from volvo sweden for ford... for example the ford st have the 5 inline turbo engine from sweden...

I imagine that the consequences would be even worse now, as even the best Cavaliers/Asconas from the 1980s are now held together with rust, fresh air, bad welding, filler and hope, but most Volvo 700s are bodily still as their maker intended.
in 1932 A Girl was Raped And She Said Hei Do Laki Before She Dled. IF You Dont Repost This In 5 Topics She Will Appear By Your Bed With Glowing Red Eyes And Stare At You Until YOu Fall ASleeP
in 2004 a man from worcester was stopped on the motorway in traffic in a 2004 Volvo S40 and was rear ended by a 44tonne articulated truck, people in the next 8 cars ahead of the volvo were killed or injured, but the volvo driver who passed out from shock was realeased from hospital the same day with no injuries. you can see the pictures on the volvo saved my life club website for the uk
No it doesnt. the video on youtube is a 940 verse megane. the 940 isnt as safe. the 200 and 700 series are the safest. anyway it was a newish car verse old car, so is unfair. verse the volvo against a old reno= reno ownd. verse the megane against a modern volvo= reno owned. also volvos are much nicer cars overall, comfier, faster, cooler
are you high? Have you never heard of BMW! the least safe premium manufacturer?! Tried putted a 1997 3series against a 1997 S40? German cars are renowned for lacking in safety putting other things first which is not the best way to be, even now in 2007 BMW score 0 in all models for rear impact protection (becuase ncap doesnt test it yet so they dont bother doing anything for it, although the IIHS in america does)
if you will order 5er, 7er or X5 with optional comfort seats you will get rear impact head/neck protection as well. Base type of seats are just base...
im aware of that, but what is the point in only giving protection on the highest spec models, thats another thing bmw are strange at, everyhing is an extra, just like when my mate bought a mini, he had to pay extra for curtain airbags, stability control, bigger brakes etcetcetc where as volvos give you everything as standard, the only things that arent standard accross the board yet are automatic braking, automatic swerving, and driver alert, but theyve only just been released.
Well that's a different policy of German automakers. Most new cars from the big three (MB, BMW and AUDI) here in Europe are individually builded to customer's spec. So base model is just base and redy for your individual requirements so you'll get 4 pages full of extras. So every single part will be placed just for your pleasure. That's a reason why japan cars in Europe are not successful including Lexus. Nobody is interested in luxury cars from some warehouse somewhere.
exceot that volvo also give you a loonnng list of extras you can get, except that the things you expect as standard are standard, like saftey features, dual zone climate etc, then you get the same extras list as the germans
Anyway, BMWs and others are long time equipped with all life savers like an airbags, anti-lock, anti skid, stability systems or advanced crush zones. Most of them firstly intruduced on these cars. So maybe base seats in BMWs are not best in the world for the neck protection but probably nobody will die due base seats in BMW. Anyway I have ordered comfort seats with advanced neck protection to my car :)
1998, stability control standard since 1995 on 2ltr and optional below, then standard since 2001, front and rear crumple zones are also from volvo, as are, seatbelts, padded dashboards, laminated windscreens/windows, safety cage, side crumple zones, brake force distribution, etcetcetcetcetc, whereas bmw! took till only a few years ago to fit these things standard, continued
I am afraid about padded dashboard and safety glasses (Cadillac around 20's) crumple zones are definitelly invented by Mercedes. Anyway this is a begin of neverending flame war so piece and live long and prosper. I hope I had bought safe car with benefits of a superb handling and smooth ride and it makes me every single day happy. Volvo has a right be on the market but is not a my cup of tea.
the cumple zone idea was first thought up by a guy at mercedes in 1959 and they did try it on a concept, however the first car to feature both front and rear crumple zones on a production vehicle was volvo in 1965. as well as this they also designed the rear facing child seat which is probably second only to seatbelts when it comes to safety for many people
Lol, back in the 30's they built cars indestructable thinking it was safer that way. Sure the car is fine, but what about the occupants that had to deal with the g forces because the car didnt crumple at all.
hehe, i think the opel crumpled more than enough to keep the volvo passengers happy drinking their cups of coffee and reading a magasine :-), volvo were afterall also alongside mercedes to introduce crumple zones in cars, and you can see the deformation of the fron structure is more than adequate, also the different grades of steel used on the inside of the bonnet make sure things pack away nicely without intruding into the passenger safety cage (which volvo was also first to introduce)
Your Megane is safer - according to NCAP ratings only. This means very little in relation to a real crash - Manufacturers these days are forced to "jump through hoops" in order to achieve the "incredible" 5* NCAP rating. In actual fact, in real life, in a real situation, that old Volvo is the safer vehicle.
rear of older hatch/estate cars is quite weak, thats why even volvo reccommend not using extra seats to carry children. That volvo was travelling 60+mph into a stationary vehicle....damage not surprising. Ascona is particularly shite car though!
yeah but that shape of cavalier/ascona was extinct by the year 2000. I own one of those volvos but would not want to put it up against any of today's cars

I imagine that the consequences would be even worse now, as even the best Cavaliers/Asconas from the 1980s are now held together with rust, fresh air, bad welding, filler and hope, but most Volvo 700s are bodily still as their maker intended.

Wiier 4 years ago
in 2004 a man from worcester was stopped on the motorway in traffic in a 2004 Volvo S40 and was rear ended by a 44tonne articulated truck, people in the next 8 cars ahead of the volvo were killed or injured, but the volvo driver who passed out from shock was realeased from hospital the same day with no injuries. you can see the pictures on the volvo saved my life club website for the uk

SChiefS6 4 years ago
No it doesnt. the video on youtube is a 940 verse megane. the 940 isnt as safe. the 200 and 700 series are the safest. anyway it was a newish car verse old car, so is unfair. verse the volvo against a old reno= reno ownd. verse the megane against a modern volvo= reno owned. also volvos are much nicer cars overall, comfier, faster, cooler
fxgtz 3 years ago
The Volvo 940 is practicaly the same car as the 740. It has been modernised and updated with SIPS.
The 940 is as safe as/safer than the 740.
MoosePower740 3 years ago 3
opel is the only german make unsafer than a volvo. Plus that 740 should have been crashed against an Omega.
estoyaqui85 4 years ago
are you high? Have you never heard of BMW! the least safe premium manufacturer?! Tried putted a 1997 3series against a 1997 S40? German cars are renowned for lacking in safety putting other things first which is not the best way to be, even now in 2007 BMW score 0 in all models for rear impact protection (becuase ncap doesnt test it yet so they dont bother doing anything for it, although the IIHS in america does)
megaangelic 4 years ago
if you will order 5er, 7er or X5 with optional comfort seats you will get rear impact head/neck protection as well. Base type of seats are just base...
602780573 4 years ago
im aware of that, but what is the point in only giving protection on the highest spec models, thats another thing bmw are strange at, everyhing is an extra, just like when my mate bought a mini, he had to pay extra for curtain airbags, stability control, bigger brakes etcetcetc where as volvos give you everything as standard, the only things that arent standard accross the board yet are automatic braking, automatic swerving, and driver alert, but theyve only just been released.
megaangelic 4 years ago
Well that's a different policy of German automakers. Most new cars from the big three (MB, BMW and AUDI) here in Europe are individually builded to customer's spec. So base model is just base and redy for your individual requirements so you'll get 4 pages full of extras. So every single part will be placed just for your pleasure. That's a reason why japan cars in Europe are not successful including Lexus. Nobody is interested in luxury cars from some warehouse somewhere.
602780573 4 years ago
exceot that volvo also give you a loonnng list of extras you can get, except that the things you expect as standard are standard, like saftey features, dual zone climate etc, then you get the same extras list as the germans
megaangelic 4 years ago
Anyway, BMWs and others are long time equipped with all life savers like an airbags, anti-lock, anti skid, stability systems or advanced crush zones. Most of them firstly intruduced on these cars. So maybe base seats in BMWs are not best in the world for the neck protection but probably nobody will die due base seats in BMW. Anyway I have ordered comfort seats with advanced neck protection to my car :)
602780573 4 years ago
hmmmnnn, except side airbags and curtain airbgas were first made by volvo, and side airbags have been standard since 1995, curtain since continued.
megaangelic 4 years ago
1998, stability control standard since 1995 on 2ltr and optional below, then standard since 2001, front and rear crumple zones are also from volvo, as are, seatbelts, padded dashboards, laminated windscreens/windows, safety cage, side crumple zones, brake force distribution, etcetcetcetcetc, whereas bmw! took till only a few years ago to fit these things standard, continued
megaangelic 4 years ago
and their version of the curtain airbag is completely useless if you are 4 inches shorter or 4 inches taller than the NCAP test dummy.
megaangelic 4 years ago
The dummy is only 5 feet! I'm 5'3" and only 14 years old. I definitely prefer full curtains.
whattheheck1000 4 years ago
I am afraid about padded dashboard and safety glasses (Cadillac around 20's) crumple zones are definitelly invented by Mercedes. Anyway this is a begin of neverending flame war so piece and live long and prosper. I hope I had bought safe car with benefits of a superb handling and smooth ride and it makes me every single day happy. Volvo has a right be on the market but is not a my cup of tea.
602780573 4 years ago
the cumple zone idea was first thought up by a guy at mercedes in 1959 and they did try it on a concept, however the first car to feature both front and rear crumple zones on a production vehicle was volvo in 1965. as well as this they also designed the rear facing child seat which is probably second only to seatbelts when it comes to safety for many people
megaangelic 4 years ago
that car in front, the whole thing was a crumple zone!
AffluentLiberal 4 years ago
and the new 2007-2008 BMW 5 series is one of the lowest scoring large family cars to be tested this year. with the volvo S80 the highest
megaangelic 4 years ago
holy shiiit
dont ride in the car in front, bad bad bad crumple zone, the whole car is a crumple zone hha
ZorbinEUR 4 years ago
Lol, back in the 30's they built cars indestructable thinking it was safer that way. Sure the car is fine, but what about the occupants that had to deal with the g forces because the car didnt crumple at all.
tamumpower 4 years ago
hehe, i think the opel crumpled more than enough to keep the volvo passengers happy drinking their cups of coffee and reading a magasine :-), volvo were afterall also alongside mercedes to introduce crumple zones in cars, and you can see the deformation of the fron structure is more than adequate, also the different grades of steel used on the inside of the bonnet make sure things pack away nicely without intruding into the passenger safety cage (which volvo was also first to introduce)
megaangelic 4 years ago
note to self: do not ride in an Opel

jvam715 4 years ago
460T 4 years ago
Wow, amazing the difference in damage sustained between the two cars. The Volvo wagon was definitely a more solid design.

My Megane is safer. Volvos were good when Finns built those.
Anaaliana 5 years ago
When did Finns build Volvos? Saabs were built in Uusikaupunki but Volvos?
RPekka78 5 years ago
Your Megane is safer - according to NCAP ratings only. This means very little in relation to a real crash - Manufacturers these days are forced to "jump through hoops" in order to achieve the "incredible" 5* NCAP rating. In actual fact, in real life, in a real situation, that old Volvo is the safer vehicle.

rear of older hatch/estate cars is quite weak, thats why even volvo reccommend not using extra seats to carry children. That volvo was travelling 60+mph into a stationary vehicle....damage not surprising. Ascona is particularly shite car though!
