  • yeah but that shape of cavalier/ascona was extinct by the year 2000. I own one of those volvos but would not want to put it up against any of today's cars

  • Volvo is a piece of shit!

  • @NorrnasBoy260 THUMBDOWN! Volvo < All other brands.

  • @NorrnasBoy260 yes todays volv is a peice of shit i agree.. but old volvos would last you 500k miles and were safe

  • @solarlightning Yeah, I was talking about the new ones, I had a 744gl before :))

  • Cheap European pieces of shit

  • @baghead727 Europeans made cars,so y can shut the fuck up.What,I should drive 16.0 L cadillac???

  • @5ky5tr1d3r Was that supposed to say something...? If you can't speak english, don't even fucking try. Use a damn translator, and drive your POS euro shit off a cliff

  • @baghead727 Europe makes excellent cars....cheap,expensive,fast,slow,all kind of cars....Yanks make only a middle class...anyway,since style, and taste is different, you shouldn't leave comments of this kind here, you know?Opel is one of best cars around....along with Mercedes,Porsche,Audi,BMW,Volkswagen,Volvo,Peugeot,Citroen,Dacia,Rols Royce,Aston Martin,McLaren,Seat....don't get me started on auto-moto industry history here. One more thing, thing on back is Volvo, made to crush everything.

  • @baghead727 So as your '58 Chevy

  • damn Volvo's all up in that ass.

  • This is kinda the same, with other cars watch?v=WvXoY3Rbmxw

  • This is the guide, how to remove a Opel

  • FAKE .. :S

  • SHIT THE OPEL DISAPPERED!!

  • That Opel makes a good second crumple zone for the Volvo! :-)

  • i love that volvo

  • Go 740! :D

  • kia cars are the best korean cars comparing with hyundai and deawoo.......................and i think that the new kia mohave is best the x5 and x6

  • You have to be kidding, they're piles of shite.

  • fake...

  • What makes you say that?

  • Volvo for life!

  • wie kann des sein den drückts bis vorne ein des geht doch nich und der volvo hat kaum schaden ???des war doch immerhin en opel ascona

  • i think i´d rather be in the volvo..

  • that car got FUCKED

  • Why dont you rename this "Volvo 740 Vs Opel Cavalier?

  • its a Opel Ascona! is it an Cavalier its a Vauxhall.. the same shit but right is right

  • :-D loooooooool

  • I've tried this with bier cans. I still don't understand exactly, why should the front car should damage more, than the back one. I understand, that tha Volvo has a deformation zone in front of it, called Opel, and the Opel does not, it has a wall in front of itself. But I've tried it with bier cans, and they showed a totally invert result, 3 test, 3 times the backward can smashed, the front one stayed intact. Why?

  • the back of this car was weak, compared to the front of the other car, AND the volvo was coming at it, at 109km/h, the car is strongest for front collisions

  • Okay, so that makes this situation impossible to occur.

  • its beacuse of how different a Volvo 740 and an Opel Ascona is.

Out of the build quality and safety aspects.

  • And to think this crash test only occured at 4mph!

  • i too have a volvo, in this video looks like the car in front cannot move forward and the volvo is just pushing into it, like the title says could have been off a ramp??

  • Yes, the Volvo has been accelerated to 68mph into the rear of a much older Opel Ascona (=Vauxhall Cavalier in UK) which is clearly against a solid concrete wall. Had the Ascona been free to move (as likely in a real accident), the damage would have been considerably less. The newer car would still have suffered less damage. Thankfully this circumstance (no attempt by hitting car to brake or evade, nowhere for hit car to go) is very rare. Any contemporary of the Opel would be just as damaged.

  • Opel is not much older. two years or so perhaps.

  • That volvo is so bad, that was 4 door turned into like not even 2 door lol, ppl in back are dead and possibly front severly injured!

  • Uhm, it's the Opel that gets demolished by the Volvo.

  • umm, i'm pretty 100% sure that station wagon is a volvo... anyway this vid doesn't play anymore.

  • Uhh! I owned an Ascona for many years, and I always thought it's a stiff, solid car, cause it was like that. Never crashed with it luckily. In the eighties the Swedish Folksam Institute declared, the Ascona was the safetiest car of it's category in it's time. Hard to believe. Than what were Volvo and Benz cars?

  • Umm in that test the speed was about 100 km/h. Such an accident dont occur very often. And if the Volvo were the first car it would look similar.

  • i dont know if you ever looked at the difference in strength/design of both cars, the Opel/Vauxhall is a much cheaper car, and back then the designers were clearly not interested in safety.

The volvo is built pretty strong (not as strong as a new car on offset crashes though :-P), weights more and is more expensive. a unfair contest some may say, but the difference is clearly visible.

if the volvo were the first car it wouldn't be completely trashed/flat like the opel.

  • what cars kid are

were these cars damaged by the crash?

  • SmartestinUSA

First qustion what are you trying to say?

second question use something called observation geez what a dumb questioion this is.

  • did u not see the rear seat of the opel go to the place where the front seat is???? or the car behind it's hood crumple>>>

  • omg

  • oha fln yani öndeki araba pamuktan mı yapılmış direk ezildi kağıt gibi oldu...

  • wow

  • holy shit...is the first one japanese car?

  • I don't think many of you are interpreting this correctly. The volvo's construction is simply better than this ford whatever it is here. So called crimple zones only work up to a point and then actual reinforced structure has to work. What you see here is that this ford p.o.s. is much more than sub standard in the structure department. Which car would you rather be in. Something to think about.

  • Its an Opel Ascona you retard. 97, is that your birth year or what? xD

    "Ford p.o.s"

  • even so ,Volvo are the best so stf dirty bitch! take your ford or whatever and stick it on your pussy!

  • For safety, yes. Men du är bög om du tycker att de är "bäst" på nåt annat...

  • Yes the Volvo is better built than the other car.

But it is a Vauxhall/Opel (GM) Cavalier or Ascona and not a Ford as you think

    You cock.

And Ford's are decent cars you dumb twat.

  • i cant belive that volvos r strong cars!

    or r they!!!LOL!!

  • Volvos are the safest cars in the world ( Renault owners shut up :> )

  • We had an 343DL at the beginings of the 80's. A Mercedes 200e crashed into our rear, cause the driver was drunk. I remember we had to mend the back lid and get a new plastic cover for the bumper. The Mercedes had to be towed, cause the radiator was damaged and both headlamps were smashed. If yo take a look at the first 343 of the 70's, their bumpers were even bigger then the later 240's or 700's.

  • Volvo has won many prizes for they safe and good cars 140\240\740\940.Volvo 340\360\440\460 and 480 are not real volvos they was buildt in belgia and think there was a renault engine.btw volvo 1\2\7\9 are real volvoas and was made to save lives.i know topgear had a crash a volvo 940 and a newer renault but remeber there was 10 years diffrence and who knows maybe the volvo was rusted or damage before the crash.but yes the renault was impressive

  • The 300 and 400 series were built in The Netherlands. Most of them had Renault engines except some in the 300 series.

I believe it was `5th gear` who crashed a 940 into a Renault Modus. Just a note that the design of the 940 goes back to the late 70's (740)and the Renault is from 2005. I'd rather still be in the Volvo because of al the energy in the Renault is absorbed in just 50cm and in the Volvo that is 200cm. Just a thought.

  • The same damage would happen to a medium size 1980's Volvo hatchback (340) if hit at that speed by a 740. Clearly the bigger Volvo is a more safer design. Even a modern small/medium hatchback would have difficulty absorbing a 109kmh rear impact because there's not much crumple zone to dissipate all that kinetic energy.

The Opel Ascona safety record was no worse than average during it's time.

  • Where are the sources for your claims? Just because you type, doesn't make it fact, asshole.

Way to go with the CAPS, I bet you're from scotland. Fucking twat.

  • I read the claims from Folkslam, a swedish insurance company(although the larger volvos are statistically the safest(even safer than Mercs/BMWs, but not the smaller Volvos, I read that the 340/440 were "below average", even Ford Sierras/Escorts scored average. Make of that what you like. I'm not Scottish either(No offense to Scots).Think 740 is as safe as modern car.?Type in Renault Volvo crash on here. See what happens to an old 740 hitting a modern Renault Modus.

  • Yep, that video was debunked long ago. The 'makers' of Fifth Gear removed the engine and weakened the frame rails on the Volvo.

    Nice try.

Look on YT for the Top Gear '£100 car challenge'. Clarkson actually drove a Volvo 760 into a wall at 40mph! (unlike the pussies on fifth gear who use test dummies)

He sustained nothing more than a 'chipped' thumb. (and the car still worked! hahahahaha)

  • Watch video frame by frame, there is engine right where it should be. Even I'm Volvo fan and own more than one myself, modern technology is just so much stronger, but think that it has taken this long for others to catch up, pretty good cars these old Volvos.

  • Tell us another! Bullshit.

  • True, older cars have never been good at rear-end crashes. A new car would look very messed up too if hit at that speed. Even though the 740 may be a safe car compared to cars of similar age. It's far from safe by modern standards.

  • Thats fine. You take your 'modern' car, and I'll keep my Volvo 740.

The Volvo is as safe as 'modern' cars, end of.

  • Amen to that

  • LOL! Damn straight. My mum used to drive a Volvo 340GL. A Transit van smashed into the back of it, and the bumper fell off, a few lights smashed, and the back needed a little bit of work. The van was a right off.

  • I'll bet my car's older than yours. It's a 244 from 1976.

A 240 or a 740 is NOT as safe as a more modern car. Do you seriously think safety thinking stood still for about 30 years?

  • to crassaldi or essix86, is the cavalier the one thats being smashed?

  • that is why i love my car.

  • wow

  • yes,i was joking!:-D

yes,it could be a vauxhall cavalier called opel ascona in germany

  • looks like an old opel/vauxhall cavalier from the 80s to me

  • that is not an opel that is a polish car called polonez i think... eh same crap

  • how sure are you new volvo aren't safe...

    i noe 4 person escape unscratch from a 200kmh impact in a volvo S60...

a merc accident at 150kmh 3 guys die 1 coma...

    if u dun believe...

well, ntg more i can say as it may sound fiction...

    but i personally noe it...

  • you may "noe" it, but that doesnt make it true. hes joking you noe....

  • a friend save his live thanks to a volvo s60... a big trash truck hit them at the side... amazing accident... not even an scratch...

  • New Volvo`s arent so save, because they are made by Ford XD

  • wrong, Ford only deal with finances, taxes, HR, etc they are not involved in design, testing and construction. they because are the owner can "take" tech from volvo sweden for ford... for example the ford st have the 5 inline turbo engine from sweden...

  • Volvo still handles the safety aspects of the new Volvos. In all actuality, the new Fords are more safe because of Ford's acquisition of Volvo.

  • Note to self: don´t drive a old Opel.

  • lol.

  • Opel Ascona... jakież to gówniane...!

  • what truck?! are you fucking blind?

  • I dont think that if they switched those cars so the opel was the one hitting the volvo, that the outcome would be another. Afterall, it's a Volvo 740. It's hard as a brick

  • volvo is tough

  • that volvo is a tank!

  • pmsl hope the took the dog out first

  • Woww Sucks for the car getting hit

  • Wow i wouldnt want to sit on the Opel XD

  • No wonder of the result. The first car have to take much more energy than the volvo. When the first car would crash into the volvos rear, the volvo were badly crumpled up too at this speed.

  • No The Volvo is more heavily built the car it hit has no focus on safety at all.

  • Volvo rules ads you can see!

  • I imagine that the consequences would be even worse now, as even the best Cavaliers/Asconas from the 1980s are now held together with rust, fresh air, bad welding, filler and hope, but most Volvo 700s are bodily still as their maker intended.

  • VOLVOS......their boxy, but just dont hit anyone up the arse!

    i had a vauxhall cavalier mk1 (uk)

  • Holy Shit lol

  • so you live inthe volvo but you kill all the ppl in the small crappy car.

  • CRUSH!!!!!!!

  • 1. A brand of tasty soft drinks.

    2. The action of one of the cars in this crash test.

  • Crush!

  • yeah, a safe family car, but makes every other car unsafe lol. got pummeled.

  • No, GM just sucks at safety.

  • well i now know what my next car will be....a

    PSB 24 IVT....to me it looked....safe

  • thats definitely a safe family car

  • They should put it up against a truck!

  • in 2004 a man from worcester was stopped on the motorway in traffic in a 2004 Volvo S40 and was rear ended by a 44tonne articulated truck, people in the next 8 cars ahead of the volvo were killed or injured, but the volvo driver who passed out from shock was realeased from hospital the same day with no injuries. you can see the pictures on the volvo saved my life club website for the uk

  • p.s the truck was doing around 60mph

  • dont ride in the opel rekord :) volvos are SO much safer!

  • Dude, Volvos are about the best cars in the world. Opels = crap. That Opel was owned.

  • Renault wins from Volvo.

  • Whahha, good joke...

  • No it doesnt. the video on youtube is a 940 verse megane. the 940 isnt as safe. the 200 and 700 series are the safest. anyway it was a newish car verse old car, so is unfair. verse the volvo against a old reno= reno ownd. verse the megane against a modern volvo= reno owned. also volvos are much nicer cars overall, comfier, faster, cooler

  • The Volvo 940 is practicaly the same car as the 740. It has been modernised and updated with SIPS.

The 940 is as safe as/safer than the 740.

  • opel is the only german make unsafer than a volvo. Plus that 740 should have been crashed against an Omega.

  • are you high? Have you never heard of BMW! the least safe premium manufacturer?! Tried putted a 1997 3series against a 1997 S40? German cars are renowned for lacking in safety putting other things first which is not the best way to be, even now in 2007 BMW score 0 in all models for rear impact protection (becuase ncap doesnt test it yet so they dont bother doing anything for it, although the IIHS in america does)

  • if you will order 5er, 7er or X5 with optional comfort seats you will get rear impact head/neck protection as well. Base type of seats are just base...

  • im aware of that, but what is the point in only giving protection on the highest spec models, thats another thing bmw are strange at, everyhing is an extra, just like when my mate bought a mini, he had to pay extra for curtain airbags, stability control, bigger brakes etcetcetc where as volvos give you everything as standard, the only things that arent standard accross the board yet are automatic braking, automatic swerving, and driver alert, but theyve only just been released.

  • Well that's a different policy of German automakers. Most new cars from the big three (MB, BMW and AUDI) here in Europe are individually builded to customer's spec. So base model is just base and redy for your individual requirements so you'll get 4 pages full of extras. So every single part will be placed just for your pleasure. That's a reason why japan cars in Europe are not successful including Lexus. Nobody is interested in luxury cars from some warehouse somewhere.

  • exceot that volvo also give you a loonnng list of extras you can get, except that the things you expect as standard are standard, like saftey features, dual zone climate etc, then you get the same extras list as the germans

  • Anyway, BMWs and others are long time equipped with all life savers like an airbags, anti-lock, anti skid, stability systems or advanced crush zones. Most of them firstly intruduced on these cars. So maybe base seats in BMWs are not best in the world for the neck protection but probably nobody will die due base seats in BMW. Anyway I have ordered comfort seats with advanced neck protection to my car :)

  • hmmmnnn, except side airbags and curtain airbgas were first made by volvo, and side airbags have been standard since 1995, curtain since continued.

  • 1998, stability control standard since 1995 on 2ltr and optional below, then standard since 2001, front and rear crumple zones are also from volvo, as are, seatbelts, padded dashboards, laminated windscreens/windows, safety cage, side crumple zones, brake force distribution, etcetcetcetcetc, whereas bmw! took till only a few years ago to fit these things standard, continued

  • and their version of the curtain airbag is completely useless if you are 4 inches shorter or 4 inches taller than the NCAP test dummy.

  • The dummy is only 5 feet! I'm 5'3" and only 14 years old. I definitely prefer full curtains.

  • I am afraid about padded dashboard and safety glasses (Cadillac around 20's) crumple zones are definitelly invented by Mercedes. Anyway this is a begin of neverending flame war so piece and live long and prosper. I hope I had bought safe car with benefits of a superb handling and smooth ride and it makes me every single day happy. Volvo has a right be on the market but is not a my cup of tea.

  • the cumple zone idea was first thought up by a guy at mercedes in 1959 and they did try it on a concept, however the first car to feature both front and rear crumple zones on a production vehicle was volvo in 1965. as well as this they also designed the rear facing child seat which is probably second only to seatbelts when it comes to safety for many people

  • that car in front, the whole thing was a crumple zone!

  • and the new 2007-2008 BMW 5 series is one of the lowest scoring large family cars to be tested this year. with the volvo S80 the highest

  • holy shiiit

dont ride in the car in front, bad bad bad crumple zone, the whole car is a crumple zone hha

  • Lol, back in the 30's they built cars indestructable thinking it was safer that way. Sure the car is fine, but what about the occupants that had to deal with the g forces because the car didnt crumple at all.

  • hehe, i think the opel crumpled more than enough to keep the volvo passengers happy drinking their cups of coffee and reading a magasine :-), volvo were afterall also alongside mercedes to introduce crumple zones in cars, and you can see the deformation of the fron structure is more than adequate, also the different grades of steel used on the inside of the bonnet make sure things pack away nicely without intruding into the passenger safety cage (which volvo was also first to introduce)

  • note to self: do not ride in an Opel

  • Why am I not surprised...

(Wonder if it had one of those "look at Opel now" stickers, haha)

  • Wow, amazing the difference in damage sustained between the two cars. The Volvo wagon was definitely a more solid design.

  • My Megane is safer. Volvos were good when Finns built those.

  • When did Finns build Volvos? Saabs were built in Uusikaupunki but Volvos?

  • Your Megane is safer - according to NCAP ratings only. This means very little in relation to a real crash - Manufacturers these days are forced to "jump through hoops" in order to achieve the "incredible" 5* NCAP rating. In actual fact, in real life, in a real situation, that old Volvo is the safer vehicle.

  • Swedish quality! Svensk kvalité!

  • That's why I will NEVER buy a opel. Volvo for life!

  • Volvo 200 and 700 series are the most solid cars ever built.

  • Heck yes they are! The 240's and 740's are some of the best built cars in the WORLD! Thats why you still see them on the road. VOLVO4LIFE!

  • rear of older hatch/estate cars is quite weak, thats why even volvo reccommend not using extra seats to carry children. That volvo was travelling 60+mph into a stationary vehicle....damage not surprising. Ascona is particularly shite car though!

  • YAY, go the volvo, this reiterates my message being that volvo's are the safest cars around!

got myself a 850 1996 which is like driving a tank.

  • LOOOL this opel is now dead :D

  • Haha, look at that fucking car getting totald by a Volvo! Volvo's the best car ever built, buy one and you will NEVER regret it!

  • Strongest and safest car this side of a tank!!!

  • Yeah!! Solid Volvo.

  • haha, i have that same volvo wagon.

i dont know if that was just a shitty car it ran into, or if the volvo is made from stone.

    how fast was it going?

  • Volvo break is send at 109km/h against an Opel.

  • Thats what you car is gunna look like if it f*cks with a volvo! GO VOLVO!

  • Good aul Ascona's, as soft as shite.
